- The Bajau or bajo tribe, renowned for their exceptional seafaring skills, has garnered attention as the possible inspiration for the Metkayina tribe in Avatar: The Way of Water. Living primarily on boats called "soppe," bajau people lead a nomadic lifestyle, intimately connected to the sea. Their remarkable ability to dive, staying submerged for extended periods without equipment, has fascinated researchers.
The study revealed that natural selection on genetic variants in the PDE10A gene has increased spleen size in the Bajau, providing them with a larger reservoir of oxygenated red blood cells. They also found strong evidence of selection specific to the Bajau on BDKRB2, a gene that affects the human diving reflex. This mutations enhance bajau people diving capabilities. Despite bajau tribe unique adaptation to sea life, the Bajau people face challenges.
Modernization threatens their traditional way of life, as fewer engage in traditional fishing practices and settle on land. While this shift raises concerns about the potential loss of their exceptional skills, it also reflects the pursuit of individual prosperity amid changing times, underscoring the importance of respecting cultural diversity.
