  • 5 months into recovery from a disc herniation and severe nerve damage I am starting to think that I will be able to run again but for now I have a few updates and things coming up for you!

    Time to flip the mindset. Focus on what you can do rather than what you cant do. I was in hospital 2 years ago and thought excercise was over for me but slowly i got back to things.

    Keep hanging in there, cycling was the thing that built my leg strength back up! Then started running after about 8 months 😊😊

    Another one raising my hand with a past herniation (L3/L4) with nerve damage that took years to heal but did. That 2mm/a month is a damn long time to wait. Sounds like you're doing everything right, just wanted to send some hope.
    Also wanted to shout out and tell you that the psychological impact from not doing something that is so much a part of who you are is not to be underestimated. I just wanted to punch people who said 'but you can still do this' or 'you're lucky it's not this' or 'your luck is going to change soon'...

    Hi Gary. Not sure if you will read this but essentially, a friend of mine sent me a link to your channel 6 weeks ago, as it appeared we were going through very similar issues but approximately 12 weeks apart. In early March, after dealing with a slightly annoying back aggrevation, I too woke up with my hip on fire and could no longer stand on my right leg, and had foot drop. After presenting at a Manchester hospital A&E, I received an MRi which confirmed 3 bulging/herniated discs (S1/L5, L5/L4 and L3/L4) the latter of which was a confirmed compression of the cauda equina. I was immediately transferred to another Greater Manchester hospital where they are the spinal specialist for the North West. It was deemed that i didnt have the full syndrome but was at risk of developing it. Very long story short, I was offered urgent surgery but opted for conservative rehabilitation. I've since paid for additional private scans and consultations and it's been unreal the lack of consensus I've had. The last 10 weeks I've gone from not being able to stand at all and with no ability to dorsiflex/heel walk to being able to walk for 2hours and perform a wide range of movement patterns. The pain has been awful at times and I'm not sure id do it again but I found my biggest successes came with alternative supplementary approaches like specific changes in diet, supplementing with regenerative compounds like chondritin and even 'grounding ' 3 times a day. Maybe it's the placebo effect but it's been night and day. I still have nerve damage, periodic pain and weakness too but I've recently had some major improvements by week 10

      If you are in Manchester I can highly recommend seeing Dave Williams at Harris & Ross in Manchester (Wilmslow)... he is a back specialist and has been very accurate and supportive since day 1 of my injury. Good luck :)

    Followed you on instagram for about two years now! In December I’ve got some serious lower back pain, one flare up later in January and i went to a MRI scan that showed herniated disc in L5/S1, so then just walked, doing some elliptical and tried som light lower back exercises. Slowly got better and at Easter the pain just went away. Started running 1 K at a time, in April. now at 8 K a week. No pain while running, but some days we better some worse. Can wake up with some nerve discomfort in left pinky toe but nothing more down the leg or tigh. And feeling more “connected” with the muscles in the left leg now. The last thing is that I tend to get very sore in the groin area the day after every strength training and run. Do you think it’s to early for me to get on the running bandwagon again or is it okay to do short runs 3 k, don’t want this to be a chronic injury at 32 years of age.
    Long read, but your journey back from your injury has been a true inspiration in a long winter up here in the north… 😅

    Hi Gary ! I have a very similar injury as you. Mine came from a hip replacement . I have 35 years of running ultramarathons. I am 16 months out from the injury. I find that I can climb/hike uphill hard and jog the downhills. The Gastroc and soleus do not have to work as hard on the downhills. ( other than balance ) . This will allow me to start mountain running again . This helps to satisfy some of the mental aspects from the loss. As you know the flats are really tough with this issue. I am going back to ultras again but only those with very little flat. Have you tried jogging downhill ? Cheers Wade

      @@GaryHouseCoaching They told me 2 years to heal a nerve injury of that length. The neurologist also mentioned that exercise was the best thing for it. I too can not do a single leg heel lift. ( calf raises ) or feel half of my foot. I'm just doing to keep moving and hope for the best. All the best to you and your recovery Gary !!!

      Thanks!! Im very wary of giving out advice on the subject really mainly for the reasons I mention in the video … each case is different , I’m just a coach / runner with lots of experience not an expert in this stuff. My own experience? I herniated the same disc and if it wasn’t for the fact it broke off and damaged the nerve so much I would be back running now … I can cycle pretty hard again and I’m always in favour of pushing limitations a little. I did an ankle rehab video a few years ago that might help you with proprioception and also check out David Grey rehab who I have been learning from a lot - keep up the recovery 💪🏻

Some dark moments indeed these last months, but you get to appreciate your stubbornness much more when you see small results turn into big ones! Keep up the good work and you’re running up those welsh hills again soon!
