Niche Zero Coffee Grinder - Is it best at home or for use in a cafe?

  • In this video we take a look at the new Niche Zero Coffee Grinder and review what use it can have for the barista at home or in a cafe. The Niche grinder uses conical blades as opposed to flat burr and apparently retains or holds very little coffee in between grinds - 'ZERO' retention! Joel found the grinder could hold potential as a secondary grinder in a cafe to grind individual doses of single origin or decaf coffee for example.
    Take a look and let us know what you think of the grinder and if it's something you could see yourself using.

    I've been using the Niche Zero for about 6 months. Recently, I received their new disk as well. I don't think there's a comparable machine on the market for single dosing. Especially for the price. The NZ is cleverly designed and beautifully constructed. It's very easy to use, to calibrate, and to clean. I think it's filling a huge hole in the prosumer market, for those of us who just make a few coffee drinks per day, and don't want beans to be sitting in a hopper, getting stale. I understand that for people looking for their quick coffee fix, this may not be the grinder of choice. But for me, some of the things that you mention, like the grinding taking a bit long, are nonissues. Frankly, if I were unhappy about the grinding taking, say, 20 seconds instead of 10 seconds, I'd be thinking that I should perhaps take up meditation and learn to chill.

    • @BensCoffeeRants
      @BensCoffeeRants 3 года назад

      I don't think the lack of hopper is really a great / new feature... I use a Vario for single dosing, just don't fill up the hopper with beans, simple! This basically doesn't give you the choice.

      @@ArtistiCoffeeRoasters best/cheapest option is a Rode smartlav, plug it into your iphone and sync it in post, very quick and easy process and around $80 so might be in budget depending on things. The hard thing with your setup (which looks great) is that the on camera mic is too far away - would probably need to be more like 2 feet away - and the room has a lot of hard surfaces. Thanks for the great content and hope this helps.

    Great review, especially the details on who would like the grinder. We are in the process of upgrading our home equipment and process after 15 years of old school espresso making. We have a plumbed in La Spaziale Vivaldi S1 V1 (that will be replaced with an LMLM in a week or two), a Baratza Vario, and a Super Jolly with the doser. We currently have half caf in the Vario and regular in the SJ, but we also like pour overs. At this stage, there is no easy way to switch grinds or beans without wasting a lot of coffee and time. We have also started weighing and timing grams in and out, which is difficult and often very wasteful on both grinders (though worse on the SJ, because it retains way too much and the doser throws ground coffee everywhere. After watching all of these reviews, we preordered a Niche Zero and plan to sell the other two grinders. Yes, weighing and doing single dose grinding takes longer, but after 15 years of making espresso and pour overs I don't see any other way to really get great coffee. I suppose if you buy stale beans or preground beans at the supermarket, it won't matter anyway. But if you are going to pay $15 for 12 ozs of freshly roasted beans, I suspect the Niche Zero will pay for itself in short order. The only question we have is whether it is best to try to get by with one or two Niche Zeros just to avoid noting and returning to the settings for each type of coffee.

    I've had my Niche for about 4 months now. I keep my beans in an Airscape container and I have learnt that it is far easier to weight the beans in a wider container, (plastic cup), rather than in the Niche cup. It's also far quicker to get the beans from the Airscape than fiddle about pouring them out if the bag. You don't spill as many beans. Also agree with Jackie's comments.

    guys i have a question that is bothering me for months; i have a stepless grinder and 2-3 types of single origin coffee used only for espresso, i don't vary the grinder setting but i vary the dose to obtain the desired extraction, like for some dark roast brazill i use 18g and for some medium Ethiopia i use 20.1g Does it make any difference if i vary the grind setting vs the quantity?? p.s. i have 36mm burrs and use it on a 3 out of 7, it's a Lelit PL042
    edit: types not times :)

    • @ArtistiCoffeeRoasters
      @ArtistiCoffeeRoasters  4 года назад +2

      Hi Dan, The best thing to do would be to adjust your grind setting before your dose. By only adjusting your dose you are using the depth of the coffee bed to control the flow of water through your coffee not the grind participial size. This has the tendency to cause inconsistency and defects in extractions. This is quite complex to explain in comments and I would love to shoot a video addressing this in the near future so keep an eye out!

    • @buzzramsey
      @buzzramsey 4 года назад +2

      I’ve had both. They were both pared with a decent espresso machine and I found the sette much more difficult to dial. It would shift between shots and it meant I would need to adjust most days. I liked the sette in that it was fast and the weigh function is accurate - but wow it’s loud. I also doubt the longevity of it. The niche I got in from the first indigogo pledge - it’s been bomber. It’s slower but it doesn’t effect the routine. I don’t think I will ever really bother upgrade the grinder. Not for a long time anyway. It does what it supposed to do and it does it well. Flats do have a slightly better taste profile (I had a mazzer major before ....that is too big next to a de1) but I think it’s good enough for me.
