This was the best review of the Niche I have seen. I understood the NFC disc's role better, and calibration. Finally, it is well-written. The guy presents with panache.
I've had considerable problem getting Niche to work properly and this video resolved the issue for me - all the other calibration videosI have watched have it stopping at or before the mark - this one shows it going beyond it to get a firm fit then moving the black ring back to the calibration mark.
My Niche white model arrived yesterday and after pulling my first shot today, I could instantly taste all those notes listed on my bag of fresh beans, compared to grinding the same batch with my last grinder, I love it, and thanks again for explaining it all so well, another great video, thanks Josh 👍
Not to long ago I wanted to prepare a cold brew using my Toddy Cold Brew System. Since I had this grinder I never understood how to do the calibration and going past 50 if I needed my grinds to be on a higher setting for a cold brew. As far as going higher than that I still get confused. I still need another lesson. I am in love with this grinder. This one happens to grind all the beans. My Krups Burr grinder I had previously always left a few beans behind. I always found myself lightly shaking the machine to get ever single bean out. At first I was disappointed that the hopper didn’t hold enough. After using it now about a year it’s the perfect size because I don’t have to store any beans inside. I only grind what I need. Taking it apart to clean it a little tricky for me. Other than selecting a higher grind size & taking this apart this was a win win for me. I just wish that I could have gotten the white. I waited too late therefore I have the black.
Great review. RE settings >50, I put another marker at 0 when the chrome dot is at 50. This allows me to count beyond 50 without moving the black ring independently of the grind setting.
Yeah I like this a lot 👌 much simpler a method that doesn't require you recalibrating - I was just avoiding telling people to go graffiti their Niche 😂
Thanks... I was basically sold in this grinder for nearly a year I've been putting it off since it's over $500. I keep looking at all the other reasonably similar priced and quality Grinders such as the Eureka mignon silencio but to get to that all-in-one grinder you got to step up to the specialita... I really appreciate your thorough review as it connected a couple assumptions I had to reality!
Same as you was looking at Eureka mignon Silencia. Decided on Zero mainly because pulling espresso shots with Cafelat Robot. Don't need a large top mounted hopper.
Ode can't do Espresso grinds, whereas Niche is fantastic at Espresso, so there's for sure that. But I'm curious to hear what he thinks of medium and coarse grinds of the Ode vs Niche. I'm in the USA, already own a Niche and have an Ode arriving in August.
@@JeremyJensenTheOriginal That was my thought too. I've got a NZ. It's excellent at both. I do give it a rock back and forth to knock the retention, but no complaints really. LOVE the design. The Ode looks pretty cool too.
I'm also interested in how the Ode compares to the Niche, strictly speaking in terms of grind quality for pour-over. They've tested both, and I think the comparison would be quite interesting, given the different burr designs.
I was considering an Ode instead, but bought the Niche for low retention (very important for cup quality at home), versatility (does espresso + PO - Ode only PO), convenient single dosing, quality of grind and (perhaps most importantly) it being the only grinder whose aesthetics my wife finds appealing. Extremely pleased with espresso results, still finding the best PO setting (not that I've tried that hard - drinking mainly espresso these days).
Very useful clear instructions, I’m getting this machine in a few weeks time now I feel confident to start using it to make my favourite beverage as soon as I unpack it ,thanks .
There is - but not as much as the beans themselves. You can get many different types of beans. - so I would first look for the beans you like - and then a Grinder that will accentuate the flavours you prefer 👌
How would you compare this with the Baratza Vario W+? I do pour overs and coldbrew and Aeropress, but not espresso. I have the Niche, but I keep getting a lot of fines even when on courser settings - muddy bed.
Hi Lauren, yes, the Niche does produce this quality of grind, not terrible- but also not ideal for your chosen brew methods - whereas the Vario W+ does have better grinds performance for these filter settings - it would not be my go to for espresso brewing.
There's loads of parameters on the Breville that I would take into consideration for grind size - but as a ballpark grind size - I would suggest 45 and upwards to 60 for cold brew.
@@AlternativeBrewing Great. That’s pretty much where I ended up through trial and error. For filter-roast coffee I’m typically doing 36g/600ml. Grind to 35-ish and Gold mode. For espresso roast I find it works better to drop the brew temp to 90c or so.
Rather than moving the calibration to get coarser grinds...I’ve added a second mark on the collar which lines up with Zero when the main silver ball marker is on 50.
You'd want to get a dosing ring on your portafilter to transfer beans in to a 54mm portafilter - or a Normcore dosing cup that's 54mm - the Niche standard 58mm is too big to flip in to a 54mm portafilter. alternativebrewing.com.au/collections/normcore
Hey . I bought the grinder, I use it for 4 days. I notice when I put in 18 grams I get 17.5 or 17.6. I try to open and close the lid at the end of the grinding so that the remaining coffee falls out, but I don't get 18 degrees but 17.6 or 17.7. Why does this happen? Is it related to the grounding of the electricity? Thanks
Static could be the issue - also - there will be some initial loss as finer particles fill the tiny voids in cracks and the screw holes in the burr chamber. Try RDT if you want to see if it’s a static issue
I had considered the 270Wi to offer similar benefits in work flow - having precise dialing in capabilities and very little retention .. (possibly) ... 270Wi is quicker to grind.. and that's about all it's ahead in. The Sette's are fantastic for their price and features they offer but in terms of flavour in the cup and longevity for the burrs, motor and body.. I think the Niche will outperform/. The Niche is basically a commercial quality grinder wrapped up for the home user.
I have a Sette 270W and while it’s a very nice grinder, it does has a couple of issues. First of all it’s extremely loud, like wake up my wife in a different room kind of loud. Secondly, it has two dials to adjust the grind, one for coarse and one for fine adjustment, immediately sandwiched together. At least in my unit, it’s quite difficult to make a fine adjustment without the coarse dial moving with it.
Similar in terms of ground retention (lack thereof) but it seems like Sette270 has reliability issues and is LOUD, but grinds super fast compared to most grinders, so it's not loud for long. Sette is a bit cheaper I think so it's got that going for it (the weight one might be about the same price, so if you want the weighing function that's a consideration as well). At the same price I'd choose the Niche Zero for sure.
So when you calibrate...you set the black ring to the Calibrate marker. Do you then move the black ring to the zero (0) marker on fine as the finest grind? Or do you move the Silver funnel along with the black ring to (0)?
Great question! So once calibrated - the finest setting you should use is +1 from 0. So you turn the funnel around to the left after calibration. 👍 anything finer than this and you could be having the burrs rub - which is never a good thing 😀
A good idea also is to put a mark or small piece of tape on the silver ring when calibrated. So should you move the calibration ring on its own, at least you know where you where.
I just received my Niche Grinder about 2 days ago. I am currently using a Krups Slim Profile Burr Grinder along with a Bialetti 6 cup Moka Pot. I put the Krups grinder at a 4 1/2 setting for the Moka Pot which is a good setting. How much coffee beans I should use for the Niche & what setting should I set the Niche to?
Thanks for the great review I am in between the niche and ode brew grinder Which has more uniformed grinds? I won’t be using them for espresso since i have a super automatic I’ll be using them for the moccamaster, moka pot and french press
I can relate. I pre-ordered both, however, I have no idea what I'm going to do with both. I already use a Baratza Sette 270Wi for my espresso. I love the ideas behind the Niche and Ode, but I feel like the white fits my house better. The Ode's hopper holds more beans and uses flat burrs; It's a tough decision.
Hi! I'm also interested in how the Ode compares to the Niche, strictly speaking in terms of grind quality for pour-over. You've tested both, and I think the comparison would be quite interesting, given the different burr designs.
I’ve had both - the Ode is better for pour overs and cold brew - the Niche is still giving me fines when at the appropriate grind setting, which is frustrating for the price.
I would say the two factors effecting my opinion - of which is the better grinder is - the Price Tag and than whether you want to be manually grinding for an espresso every time. I'd go the Niche over the Kinu possibly every time if both were available - but the Kinu I would choose if of course I was planning on any travel and brewing coffee 😂
Alternative Brewing thank you. Will the Niche provide a noticeable improvement in taste when grinding for espresso? And would you say the Niche is a better grinder for pour over? As this is one of the M47’s “weaknesses”. I really appreciate the response!
If the hopper only holds 55 grams of coffee, it does not hold enough to brew a full pot. Is this an espresso grinder? I don't understand why they would make it so small.
Yes, you would say it's found its niche as an espresso grinder - excuse the pun 😂 You can use it for filter brewing but you do find 55g can be too small for larger batches. Thankfully it's quite fast and you can fit a larger container underneath No worries
Awesome video! Would this be good grinder if you mainly do filter coffee day to day but would like to start dabble in making home espressos (I worked as a barista before and miss pulling killer shots :) ) ? I have a hard time finding grinders that can do both well.
Just got rid of mine. Was really disappointing. Was expecting much better consistency from the grinder: +/- 10% between shots was expected by time or weight. What I saw was no better than my old Vario with ceramic burrs. I loved the way it looked, though, and how quiet it was. The workflow is nice. But, for $700 USD, I feel like you could do just as well with a grinder half the cost.
Hi Joshua, I live in the United States and would like to buy a white Niche with the 110v plug. I see you’re taking preorders on the website, is there a way I can preorder it and get one with the standard US plug? Thank you.

I have a Niche Zero but this video sounds like a commercial. It's sound bites that are associated with this grinder and IMO the most laziest form of video review you could wish to see. This is a proper example of why youtube videos can be so useless. You want to know some real info about this machine? The DB sound is irrelevent. it's the tone of the sound that matters with a grinder. In this regard the Niche has a satisfying sound compared to other grinders that output the same (or less) DB levels. Is it zero retention? No, it's not. Should you use RDT to reduce static with this machine? It's not advised but that depends how badly static is where you live. It's different for everyone depending on the humidity of where you live. If you need to. Do it. When the machine is new you will get more static than after you have ground a kilo or more of beans. Is the Niche overpriced? Yes it is. For what you get it's overpriced but then in the coffee world everything is overpriced. You are paying for simplicity in essence. You are not paying for a grinder that produces ground coffee that's any better than grinders half the price. Is it well made? Yes. (except for the crappy plastic lid) People will tell you that conical burrs are inferior compared to flat burrs but understand that conical burrs require no alignment and flat burrs do. And alignment of flat burrs is an ongoing thing each and every time you clean a flat burr grinder. You don't have to worry about that with this grinder. A big tick. The Niche Zero is for people that want convenience. If you are like myself and don't mind paying a stupid amount of money for a good little grinder because you want a good cup of coffee without getting too deep into coffee making then this is a good buy. If you want to make your coffee making into a hobby and discuss "clarity, body, fruits" etc then buy something else. The Niche is not some god like grinder that beats all before it. It's an expensive piece of convenience. If you go into buying this machine understanding that you won't be disappointed. It excels at being a reliable convenient grinder. Nothing more nothing less.
Nice review. I'm in the UK and I've 'bean' using the Niche for nearly a year now and can't fault it. I like to have 3 or 4 beans on the go so it fits my needs perfectly. One thing I do notice and I can only assume it's my machine. I've calibrated from new and again after cleaning but, if I grind anywhere near no.15 for espresso the brew time (including pre infusion) is about 10-12 sec. I have to grind mine between 5 and 10 depending on the bean. My V60 setting is around 45 again depending on the bean, for a time of near 3 mins for 200gsm in weight. Totally off piste, what is the scale you use in the vid? Cheers☕☕
thanks Tony! I appreciate the comments. The scales were a set of Acaia Lunar Scales. The great thing about this grinder is it will grind for Commercial espresso machines as well as entry level espresso machines. I used it on the Rancilio Silvia single Boiler - no PI. just to see how something like a low-end espresso machine handles the grind ... It was around 15-16 on the grind setting for this. I also used a Flair Pro 2 (20), Moka Pot (18-25), Aeropress (anywhere above 20 really) and V60 in my tests. One thing I hope was clear in the video was the fact you can control the calibration point - so if you notice on average your grind settings are finer and finer over time - you're able to change the calibration point so you can keep on the same settings. Which will help if you are using multiple brew methods. 👍
@@AlternativeBrewing Ah I thought the scales was such. I'll have to save up. I forgot to mention I use the Niche with an ECM Mechanika Slim and have tried it with a 2006 Gaggia Classic. Both work brilliant with it. Apart from the V60 I make coffee bags set on 30 and an Espro filter on the Red dot.. 55 I guess. All in all a superb grinder, one of the best buys I've made.
Because there really isnt anything wrong with the niche, except for price maybe, but the only thing better and cheaper would be a hand grinder anyways.
thanks Robert 😂 yeah I suppose it's well known that this is a very well loved grinder by many people that also share great reviews of it. Longevity could be brought in to question I guess - and we'll have to see how and if this changes overtime. Drawbacks!? yeah maybe that it won't grind spices and nuts..
One could argue that a drawback is the price (£500 here in the UK)...which is the one thing preventing me, and likely many others, from picking one up. Oh - and the website appears to be sold out until September this year.
It's made with a lot of Chinese parts, not sure if it's assembled in China as well. Aside from quality/long term reliability, people boycotting China should be aware and stay away from this product.

I am surprised not more Australians know about this grinder.
how so?
At $400.00 USA dollars it should be great!
Nic(h)e Review 👍
Thank you 😃
Lost me at 55 grams. I need 60.
Just weight the 60g. Pour in the first half, grind, open the lid, pour in the rest and grind again -> Done
I’ll just stick with my Baratza. It’s easier.
60g for an espresso shot is pretty big :D
Ben Not espresso. Sixty per liter.
Why do I get the impression I'm watching an ad rather than a review?
Because there really isnt anything wrong with the niche, except for price maybe, but the only thing better and cheaper would be a hand grinder anyways.
korean sub plz.....
Is this a review or a TV commercial? 😉
There weren’t many drawbacks what I could see, hope that’s true.
Anyhow it was well explained.
thanks Robert 😂 yeah I suppose it's well known that this is a very well loved grinder by many people that also share great reviews of it.
Oh - and the website appears to be sold out until September this year.
aldentesolo struggling to justify the price here, too : ./ (UK)
Pity it costs $1200
$1,799?! I think I can get better grinders at that price point
Which one would you go?
Heycafe H1 is a good alt. But you know what I'm saying.
It's made with a lot of Chinese parts, not sure if it's assembled in China as well. Aside from quality/long term reliability, people boycotting China should be aware and stay away from this product.
Thanks for the info! I'd rather own a hand grinder than support the CCP while they publish our primary producers.
