Warner Bros. was dumb for patenting the nemesis system. They don't use it for any other games, and they don't seem like they're going to continue making LOTR games. There could be so many good games that could come with that system and have more replayability.

Reminds me of this flash game called "One Chance" or something like that, where the company you work for discovers a cure for cancer or something, however an unforeseen side effect causes it to be airborne (Either from mutation, or purposeful vaccine dispersal), and end up killing any biological material it infects.
So, you've only got a week to find a cure for the failed cure, however there are so many distractions on the way such as an invite the the local bar or spending time with your family. Each day, you see the world dying more and more, such as the grass turning brown, fewer airplanes in the sky, the newspaper saying terrible things about you due to the accidental virus they made, etc.
You only have days left to live... how do you spend them? Do you spend your last days on Earth with your loved ones? Or do you try your hardest to find a cure for the virus you have made, even though it might all be in vain if it is too late?
Even if you find a cure, would you have found it fast enough to save the ones you love, or will you even have enough for everyone left alive..?

State of Decay had a similar idea to ZombiU. You'd load up your chosen character with supplies at your base, to go exploring or completing missions, therefore leaving your camp with very little, only for that character to get permadeath'd and require you to go and loot their corpse - which, in turn, required you to load up your new character with supplies to go and reclaim the supplies that the last character lost. I'm fairly sure the supplies were consumable in the base, as well, so your camp got weaker by you doing this.

Honestly while it is a simpler form of the nemesis system, I know Xenoblade Chronicles X had a really cool unneeded detail involving Tyrants (the Unique Monsters of the game). While Tyrants never got stronger the more players they killed, tyrants DO have a crown next to their name from yellow to Bronze to Silver and finally Gold all depending on how many players that tyrant has killed.
While it by no means affects gameplay, its a neat little detail thats really cool and could possibly even serve as a warning to other players to think twice about trying to fight this thing if they aren't prepared.

Rogue Legacy did a really cool take on this where the first character you play as on a new save file is the final boss and every time you die, you get to choose from 3 descendants who each have differing traits ranging from hilariously pointless to literally game-altering: be it from something as innocuous as farting with every jump, having a smaller/bigger hit-box, or even playing the game in grayscale or with the screen inverted. It kinda paradoxically makes you WANT to die just to see what weird combinations you'll get the further in to the dungeon you go.

I seem to remember a story about Capcom somehow copyrighted a specific method of moving information from one savefile on a memorycard to another (in the PS2 era), which REALLY messed things up for TecmoKoei who used that method for moving save data between different versions of their Dynasty Warriors games, that meant they couldn't do so anymore on their subsequent games. It apparently created really bad blood between them... ah, here was the text (from a silicon era article)
"Capcom sued Koei Tecmo for infringing a couple of game-related patents owned by the company. The first one involved unlocking more content by reading the disc of a previous game, commonly seen in the Xtreme Legends expansions of Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors games. The other handled controller rumble to convey information not visible on the player’s screen, was used in the Fatal Frame series."
Capcom won both lawsuits, but Tecmo are not happy with them to this day and quite frankly those two both sound like cool techniques that shouldn't be gatekept behind patents.

Everything stays the same and even the enemies will keep the same health that they had unless they heal at a health station

Decaying Winter takes punishing death to a whole new level, especially considering its a co-op game. Every single death can very easily cause your squad to lose the whole game and start over from square one.
Dying applies 'death morale' to all living teammates, up to 4, which each reduce visibility, 1/5 of movement speed, and 1/5 defense:
Your teams' field of view gets shrunken, they sprint slower than base walking, and they take massive damage with high chance of debuffs from anything.
It can be cured by going two waves (out of a ten wave game) with nobody dying, but if any of the crippled teammates dies, the timer resets as well as getting another stack if applicable.
It single handedly causes the most ragequits in any game I've participated in.

most people never played it, but Outward has one of coolest death mechanics: when you die, instead of being shunted back to a checkpoint, you get one of 120 or so “defeat scenarios.” so you may wake up back at town after being saved by the guards if you’re close by, but you may end up captured by bandits, saved by a traveler and given a gift, wake up in a cave in or the middle of a dungeon, etc., etc. and depending on the scenario, either a few hours might have passed, or a week and a half. and considering most of the quests in this game are time sensitive, even failing if you ignore the warnings for a few quests even tho you never officially started them, losing a week and a half can be BRUTAL.
the game also has a hardcore mode, and instead of death immediately erasing your save, perma death just becomes a 1 in 5 chance when the game is choosing your defeat scenario.
anyone who like rpgs and survival games should give this euro-jank game a shot. it’s certainly doesn’t have the best graphics, but the main quest is different depending on which faction you choose, giving you different perspectives on how the events of the world play out. the game takes a bit to really start going, but for those who like to feel like you’re adventuring, it’s definitely worth it. (i mean, one of the food items is called Bread of the Wild… 😂)

One game that immediately jumps to mind for me is Cruelty Squad. You start on the second highest difficulty, Divine Light, and, upon dying, you're lowered to the difficulty level below that, Flesh Automaton. Then, if you die four times on one level while on Flesh Automaton, you get reduced to the lowest difficulty, Power in Misery. This makes sense in the context of the game because you're revived by the corporation you work for upon death, but, if you die too many times, you become a liability to your employers, causing them to turn you into a cheap cyborg that can revive itself.
There are pros and cons to each difficulty level. On the lowest level, you take less damage and can consume corpses to restore health. However, there are some doors in certain levels that are only accessible on the higher difficulties, so you can't experience everything the game has to offer on the lowest difficulty. Fortunately, there are ways to restore your playthrough to the higher difficulties and even unlock a secret highest difficulty level that bears its own exclusive content.

I know it was mentioned in the intro or at least the second game was mentioned but Darkest Dungeon is a classic for these moments which is understandable if the game didn't make it because it's rather typical at this point.
Darkest Dungeon's Death system is a visual representation of why I refuse to nuzlocke a Pokémon, I'll get too emotionally attached to a character and deaths are permanent as they are presumably inevitable. Barring the rare revival event that occurs in Hamlet if you're lucky every death in Darkest Dungeon even on Radiant is permanent. And when I say every death, I do mean EVERY DEATH. And even if you got the revival, you can only bring one back from the dead whereas the other 2 will just move on to the beyond. And did I mention it's a rare event?

  • @kevinmilhim646

I feel like Darkest Dungeon should've taken Fire Emblems place considering how it frequently auto-saves to prevent save scumming. If you really want to save a unit in a Fire Emblem, you can just restart the entire chapter. If you wanted to save someone in Darkest Dungeon, too bad.

    • @toumabyakuya

Nah, that it Auto-Saves is what, in my opinion, ruins Darkest Dungeon. Making me lose from minutes to an hour at best of progress and forcing me to re-do the entire stage is, in my opinion, punishment enough.

I completely disagree that auto-saves ruin Darkest Dungeon. To paraphrase the game's opening text crawl, Darkest Dungeon is a game about living with your mistakes, which ties into the game's Lovecraftian themes of insignificance and hopelessness. Losing characters for good, as well as keeping a record of everyone who has died via the Graveyard, reinforces the message that you are dealing with forces that are beyond human comprehension. It's hauntingly effective.

Literally all multiplayer open world zombie games have Zombie U mechanic, you die, you run to that zombie to try to pick up your stuff back.
They just moved it to singleplayer game.
Also, co-op like No More Room In Hell has that same mechanic. But story driven, specific character-tied zombie games would have really hard time incorporating that same gameplay mechanics.

zombi u, or how ik it more as, zombi (the console version) is such a sick premise that since that game, has never once been touched on since. sure some elements have carried over but an actual deep survival experience where its 1 life with 1 save and 1 profile or u can lose ur save ur loot and all ur checkpoints and start from scratch actually being a hard zombie survival game with extreme realism scenarios for the zombie survival genre and fighting the character which u once played on a different save which such a extraordinary achievement for the zombie survival genre which has been glanced over since. weather its, taking time to build things, barricading doors, sleeping being risky due to zombies possibly killing u in ur sleep if u dont fortify the area ur sleeping in scavenging for loot that would typically be time consuming and useless to u until u made it back to ur safe area and everything is taking place moreless on a RTS styled basis. its one of very few games that i played where such gameplay elements are so good even in modern games today to improve the gaming experience, but has not since been touched.
another game, ill keep this one short, is viva pinata. one of few games that have a technical but also not technical ending, insanely beautiful to play to this day, so smooth to play and outshine modern games easily to this day. still one of if not the best most under rated game i have ever played.

I'd say that the MonHun "death" mechanics (The hunters actually never die, they just faint and are sent to the camp) would be an honorable mention.
When health reaches zero, the money reward gets reduced by a third of the total amount and the fallen hunter is sent to the base camp. Once the hunters faint 3 times, the reward gets to zero and you fail the quest, returning without your used items but keeping the items you collected during the quest.
The interesting part about this mechanic is that sometimes makes you be more toughtful and careful with each faint. Also makes you try and have better teamwork since the faint system works for the whole team in online quests, with a total of 3 faints for a max of 4 players.

And barring the DLC characters, people die in battle on both sides, at least most of the time, Ricken and Henry’s support brings that point out quite well.

I live for what the Fire Emblem Series does with the perma death system. I rarely play with it on mind you, but it just adds an extra depth to everything you do. Every decision. It makes you question if what you are doing is smart or not.
Another game franchise that did this was Valkyria Chronicles, 1 and 4 specifically where units can very well permanently die if you fuck up.
Portraying war less as a game and as an actual thing with stakes where your units can die because of your mistakes is fantastic. And there is a reason why i reload my saves when someone does die. Its called because i cannot stand the thought of them having died due to my mistake. It stings, and that is what makes it so fantastic.

One game series that came to mind was Armored Core, specifically the earlier Generations prior to Nexus, where dying in a mission still caused that mission to disappear regardless, and your pay being docked, and god forbid you fall too deep in debt, as you'll be throw to become a guinea pig for the corporations to turn you into an experiment... by giving you some nice bonuses and abilities, like a free radar, better booster efficiency, and not having to go prone to shoot big shoulder weapons, essentially a form of throwing the player a bone to give the game another shot and beat it, like FromSoft has faith in the player
Could it be considered cheating? Perhaps it is, its considered canon that the Player character doesn't have any Human+ Enhancements to be an Ace, they already are one, but if someone just wants to have a good fun with their giant death robot then let them be.

The problem with the Nemesis system was it was implemented in such a way that if you were good at playing you never got to see it. I came to Shadow of Mordor after having beaten Batman Arkham City Hard, NG+ with no counter icons and all that jazz. Shadow of Mordor posed zero challenge. I died so infrequently that I'd often come across the orc who got me and just merc him easy as you please. I had cleared the whole board of orcs before halfway through the game and they'd keep funneling orcs in but they were trash.
I didn't even know what the system did. People had to explain it to me. I ultimately ended up not liking the game or playing the sequel because as works of Lord of the Rings fiction the misunderstood the themes and motifs of Tolkien's writing so fundamentally as to be embarrassing.

And depending on your choices, you can get stronger as well as you can end up keeping your items and equipment. The game is old so it has a certain difficulty to it. And as a child I had a hard time learning the game, even my dad wasn't to good. I love this game to this day despite it being considered bad by breath of fire fans and non fans alike.
Though SPOILERS TO THE VIDEO love the inclusion of Fire Emblem. top tier franchise.

Missed a BIG one. Until Dawn. Since their is no check point system, when one of your characters die, they stay dead throughout the entire game and if you want want them to be alive again, you have the restart the entire game.

Personally, for me, Sky Children of the Light is my go to i terms where dying is also a necessity. Its free in mobile, playstation, and soon will soon be available in the PC version. So, the story goes your a sky kid, 'moths' termed by older players, and your goal is to bring the light to the realms by activating each Elder's temple. I wont spoil to much, but in the final area you will die nonetheless and you are to sacrifice your light. Upin death you will be resurrected and you will habe to collect the lights scattered around the realms again.
