    • @John-gm8ty

      you really don't understand business and logistics do you? they factor the cost of R&D and profit in the price frame for the general expected retail run of a product, which is roughly two years ATM, then a new model comes out because they can do new R&D based on their profit run and we have the next generation.
      it's not friken rocket science. ignorance must be pure bliss to some.
      if you compare products with inflation and what not in mind, the price of graphics cards hasn't changed bugger all since the first 3d cards came out.

    • @michelbraun4858
      @michelbraun4858 6 лет назад +4

      it is normal they always do this in the industry first make the cost back off their R&D before they start selling a new product and then make the pattern for that product cheaper and more available for other companies. That goes for nearly all industry their is be it vehicle, pharmaceutical or hardware component.

    I hope there is a follow up video on this where he has stress tested these parts and put them in actual computers and not just benchmarking devices. I want to see how the cheap cooling methods hold up against extended play time and things as such because if these things actually turn out to be a good idea to buy, this could be a way to show the company that they need to bring in the 5GB cards and people can stop paying so much for cards until the prices drop back down to what they used to be.

    De Broglie (pronounced De Broy ) was a Belgian guy who theorised and proved that if a wave can act as a particle, a particle can act as a wave and devised the formula: wavelength=Planck's constant (6.63*10^-34)/mass*velocity. Chances are the name is used because something in the GPU uses this concept

    Debroglie doesn't sound very good? OMG. It's like naming your car TESLA!!
    Louis Victor Pierre Raymond de Broglie, duke de Broglie (/dəˈbrɔɪ/; French: [dəbʁɔj][1][2] or [dəbʁœj] (About this sound listen); 15 August 1892 - 19 March 1987)[3] was a French physicist who made groundbreaking contributions to quantum theory. In his 1924 PhD thesis he postulated the wave nature of electrons and suggested that all matter has wave properties. This concept is known as the de Broglie hypothesis, an example of wave-particle duality, and forms a central part of the theory of quantum mechanics.

    • @theGoogol
      @theGoogol 5 лет назад

      @@Flamo353 : Depends how excited you get from science names :) I bet a LOT of people didn't know (and still don't know) who Tesla was. They might have heard of the name because Tesla is also a unit but DeBroglie did more for science than Tesla ever did (yup, hard to imagine but still true).
      I know what you mean, though ... for the average Joe, DeBroglie sounds unfamiliar, weird, non-marketable ... Is Linus an average Joe, though?
      One would argue Linus is on the science side, but hey :)

    • @JohnnyKnight5talker
      @JohnnyKnight5talker 5 лет назад

      Yeah hes much less known in pop culture. For the less-than-googling curious out there, his confirmed hypothesis makes it capable of calculating some silly things like the "wavelength" of a moving human! For example, consider a matter waves from a person clenching their butt cheeks and walking *very* rapidly to the nearest toilet. First check out this short and *mind blowing* vid on double slit experiment if you don't know about it already. ruclips.net/video/O81Cilon10M/видео.html . Read more for calculations and brief on de Debroglie equations.
      They would moving at a brisk ~4 mph = 1.8 m/s. de Brogliei's duality: _mc_² = _hf_ (c=light speed). Since, _f = c/λ_ with some simple algebra, and replacing c with pant-crapping speed, v, we get _λ = h/mv_ . Substituting in for a 150 lb (68kg; _m_= mass) person and Planck's constant, we get the wavelength of our terrified friend to be: 5.4493×10^-36 meters. For reference, I calculated the wavelength of the fastest recorded speed of a running human (Justin Gatlin- wind aided, not Usain Bolt) and came up with 7.8×10^-37 meters, just an order of magnitude smaller.
      For the informed, I recognize that things larger than macromolecules really don't exhibit quantum mechanical effects. This is just a fun calculation that many intro level courses use for problems--sans poo danger.

    1060 5GB version, in China we call it 1065, it has 1280 cuda cores same with 1060+6GB (1066), but only 160 bit memory. It is designed for net cafe’ usage. Because it can handle high setting PUBG while the performance of mining decreases dramatically due to less bandwidth of memory. Theoratically it can be only bought through particular channel directly to Nvidia, not for private gamers, but it is China, so...There are lots of 1065s out in the market. Same price with 1060 3GB 192bit(1152cores which we call it 1063), but can deliver better performance. 1066s are more expensive due to bitcoin and other mining usage.

      I do watch Gamers Nexus, and i enjoy their content very much. But they haven't done a video like this. LTT has. And so, they really should have done a better job relaying relevant information. This particular info might make up the difference between a purchase, and looking elsewhere, for someone.
      Besides, if someone buys the card based on the info given in this video, and then it turns out that it gets hot as hell, guess where they're gonna come to complain? Seems to me those 5 minutes of additional testing, and 30 seconds of showing the info, might be a good investment, rather than risking a large backlash after the fact. :)

    • @woshikakadong

      Christian if the card doesnt throttle under benchmark, its not going to throttle under games.even if its running at 80-90 thats still within what the chip is designed for, if it does go above 90 it will throttle, so what is there to worry about

    • @BeerBellyDK
      @BeerBellyDK 6 лет назад +1

      You know that temps differ around the world right? So if it's running right up against TJ max (point at which the card will begin to throttle) at LTT headquarters, then there is a very good chance that it'll throttle for someone who is in a slightly warmer environment.
      Again, i really wish that thermal delta figures had been shown in this video.

    • @crystalsoulslayer
      @crystalsoulslayer 6 лет назад

      It's generally accepted that you shouldn't run high-performance hardware in temps above about 80 F / 27 C. Or that, if you do, you can expect longevity and performance to suffer as a result. Most computers are designed to run in nice, cool places. The "known good" Founder's Edition cards will already be running just under their maximum thermal tolerance limits when you stress-test them in an air conditioned office. Higher ambient temperature will cause problems with _any_ power hungry graphics card, not just potentially sketchy ones.

    @4:02 The tape on the SLI connectors is called Kapton tape.
    It is used in electronics manufacturing for various reasons due to its ability to withstand high temperatures.
    I honestly don't know why they put it on there to begin with, but I assume someone accidently left it on there.
    Usually Kapton tape is used for one of these reasons:
    1. Preventing solder pads from corroding from heat (the pads in the video are gold-plated tho, so this is unnecessary here).
    2. Preventing liquid solder to stick to the pad (which is not the case here since wave soldering is way too coarse for a GPU).
    3. Something else which probably only made sense during manufacturing.

    • @lylecleveland5895

    de Broglie ( pronounced Day-Broye) is the name of a physicist who was famous for defining the wavelength of particles in a quantum mechanical sense, known as the de Broglie wavelength. It is defined as planck's constant divided by the momentum of the particle. I don't know what any of this has to do with graphics cards, but regardless...

      It's almost like as if you can see which version of the card you're buying by looking at the specs. It's really a non issue for people using common sense. Also, it's good for filling up the market in a shortage situation. I can't believe people can't get that fact in their head. Like, why throw away the PCBs that don't make the spec?

    • @OutOfRangeDE

      They advertise the lower RAM but not the rest of the lower specs. If they are going to weaken the card and have a lower cuda core count. And just make it look cheaper by advertising a lower RAM. Dont call it the same card.
      Its like buying a car with a different engine. But oh it also has 3 year old wheels and it needs to be alllinged. But pay attention to the one thing in the big bold font.

    • @TexelGuy
      @TexelGuy 6 лет назад +6

      +DayVideo Actually, that's almost exactly what car manufacturers do, lower spec cars have lower spec other things, they mostly only advertise what mostly matters to most people, like the engine, or leather seats or something. There's literally nothing wrong with that UNLESS they DON'T reveal that the tires are smaller or are worse in some way or the engine makes less torque. In our case, nvidia did reveal the less cuda core count in their own official site, scroll down and you'll easily find it. Just because it's slightly different doesn't mean the whole thing should be called something else. If that were the case we would be seeing lower spec variants of a Camry be called something completely different. That's just not how it works and it would only make things worse.

    My first thought when he said 5GB was "Ah, a China-Only model." There are, in fact, a lot of manufacturers who will basically sell to 2 whole different markets with different prices, standards, etc, and China is among the leaders there when it comes to computers and technology. I've seen 5GB and 7GB video cards more than once that people assumed were fake, but turned out in the end to just be models not meant to be shipped or sold outside of mainland China. Makes it really easy to identify them in customer support cases (as in you get none, even if it's using real parts). Basically, from what the test results showed, these are the rejects, or "B bin" cards from manufacturers, being slightly modified for resale in certain markets where they will never be held liable for anything that happens after they sell those parts to an OEM.
    In those cases that I've seen, like here, they bought them off AliExpress. Linus paid $725 for a video card that likely cost the reseller less than $300 (around 2000 Yuan is likely from what I've found, but only found locally, not online, as they're not legal to export usually) at a local shop to buy AND ship, and ended up with something you were never intended to be aware of, let alone receive, as we are not part of that target market. The thing they usually find is exactly in line with what Linus found - cheap, low quality cooling systems and power management. You can bet that if Linus ran an actual stress test or 24hr burntest on either of those cards, he'd have much different results as the capacitors started to overheat and die or the GPU itself start to deball from the board due to extreme overheating, much like the original Xbox 360.
    Actually, Linus, you might want to get back in touch with Stranger Parts and see if he can find one or both of those same exact boxes at a local shop over there in Shenzhen, and get a more precise idea what the markup might actually be on those specific ones. I'm sure there are others like me who are curious.

    Gtx 1060 5Gb card is made officially by Nividia, the purpose of this card is to provide a budget graphics card for the Internet cafe, the ability of Bitcoin mining is cut on this card so the price will be stable. The overall gaming ability of the 5Gb 1060 is very similar to the 6Gb 1060. When this card was first launched, it was not allowed to be sold to normal customers, but people in China always get some special sources that can get this card from. So the 1060 5Gb became the best! budget card in the market due to its gaming ability and lower price. However, the 1065 u get doesn’t have a formal package and doesn’t have nividia warranty. The most popular gtx 1065 on the market is from Gigabyte and Colorful. If u are in China, gtx 1060 5Gb is still my first recommendation.

    From watching your video, it doesn't seem like a scam at all. Just some poorer quality heatsinks reflected in the price. You just decided it was a scam from the get go, and trying so hard to prove it. Even at the end you were saying "not quite a scam" implying you're still being scammed in some way. You just got a cheaper variant, but you decided it was a scam because you're used to the premium variants sold in the western markets.
    What you did miss a chance on is actually doing something useful like measuring temperature performances on those heatsinks and fans and comparing it to the expensive premium heatsinks from the western markets. Obviously it would not be as good, but what's important is that you can use the data to predict whether the cheaper ones are fit for purpose over the lifetime of the card. The heatsinks included might not be the pinnicle of engineering but they might do a well enough job for the purpose. Or maybe they don't. But you could test it and that'll be useful information for everybody..

    Theoretically, if the PCB on the Aliexpress 1080 is the same, you could rip the cooling off and liquid cool it, making it a more affordable and equally as good solution for those who are looking for a 1080 that they will be liquid cooling. Interesting...

      I'm telling ya these are pcbs from namebrand manufacturing plants that were considered subpar and sold off to a "recycling" company to be assembled and sold. This is quite possibly a legit 1080.

      no warranty though, idk if liquid cooling voids waranty?(in that case it would make sense)

      It does, Thomas. And that was exactly my thought, you are going to void warranty anyways, so just get a cheap one like this and save some bucks.

    There is a 5GB GTX 1060. It was made from the 1060 6GB that had dead memory modules on them. These 5GB cards can not be bought publicly and are only sold to Chinese Internet gaming cafés.

    Careful: Aliexpress (in contrast to eBay) does not include import tax from far eastern countries. Prepare to pick up & pay for your stuff at customs. Better look for grey import deals on eBay that were shipped by the dealer to a "nearby" location beforehand and then sent to you without the need to pay for customs!

      They often straight up lie on the label about what's in the box so you won't have to pay taxes. Where I live, we need to pay taxes over imported goods from China that are more expensive than €22. When you order something, they will just put on the box that it costs less than that (and that it's dangerous to mail the package after it's been opened).
      Worked multiple times for me :)

      DSP Most the time you won't get hit by Customs, if you do it won't be for much money, usually phones are marked as a $5 MP3 Player or 'Gift'

      Well, not all sellers on Aliexpress know about this trick and some dont seem to care.
      In my case: I bought 2 LED lights which were not on the european market yet via the official manufacturers account on Ali from China. They did not attach ANY information to the box and I had to pay my 19% taxes at the German customs where the item was held. They forced me to give them the original payment details + the original invoice so I wouldnt lie about the price.
      If I want to buy cheap electronics, I will never rely on Ali anymore - I'll buy through eBay sellers which sell stuff from other EU countries which were "secretly" imported from China.

      I imagine overclocking and extended use won't be as good as a brand card

    • @wasd____
      @wasd____ 6 лет назад +81

      Perfectly fit and working cards for how long, though? Those cheap heatsinks and poor overall build quality will probably give you a card with a limited lifespan. This may be fine for an internet cafe, where burning out cards and replacing them with upgraded ones at predictable intervals is just a capital equipment cost. It's not fine for the consumer market where people actually expect some longevity. There's a reason at least one of these cards was only intended for internet cafes. Buying sketchy shit, even if it works today, is almost always shows itself to be a sketchy deal in the long run.

      Well, you can buy an "OCV" version of a GTX 1060 with sketchy cooling on "normal" non-Chinese eshops. You are paying less for same performance but worse build quality, that is not a scam, that is getting what you pay for. GPUs are not used for decades anyways.
