Upgrading my PC with a cheap AliExpress motherboard

  • My prebuilt ASUS ROG gaming PC has a bit of an upgrade problem, and that is the motherboard. I had no idea that the last bios update for it came out in 2020, and as such, it doesn't work with Ryzen 5000 series CPUs.
After looking for a cheap replacement I came across the Maxsun B550M Terminator, listed on both AliExpress and Amazon. It was cheaper than pretty much every other AM4 board I could find so I thought I'd give it a try.
Bryan over at TechYesCity also reviewed one of these a few months back (albeit with different branding). You can find that video here:

There is 1 difference between the Soyo and Maxsun mobo. The Maxsun motherboard is with reinforced pcie slots. If you plan on buying one of those and the prices is the same, definitely get the Maxsun one.

I prefer layouts which have the x1 slot at the top in the same row as the main M.2 slot, where it won't interfere with a 3-slot graphics card; but this is obviously the next best alternative. I don't know why any motherboard manufacturer bothers wasting their time, effort, and manufacturing capacity on slots which no-one is ever going to use.

RE-BAR is usually hidden if you have Above 4G decoding disabled. So try finding that first, turn that on and then RE-BAR option should appear. Or just update the BIOS to the latest and then find out if the options are there.

Nice, so Asus isn't just blocking you from updating, they're also leaving you vulnerable to the Zen 2 vulnerabilities that have been discovered in the last few months and that they've fixed on their older motherboards, for instance even my fairly crappy Prime B450 Plus has received three updates focused on vulnerabilities lately, the last one released earlier this month, says "Recommended for VITAL update to mitigate the potential security vulnerabilities" my emphasis on vital. That's some stellar support.

Most of the security vulnerabilities are just if the hacker has physical access to that computer/motherboard so let's say 99% of those cases are just if the hacker has physical access which they probably don't and will never have access. But hey, you do you. Some updates may come with performance improvements and that's a thing that you're really gonna miss out on if you don't get BIOS updates.

I was *this* close to picking up this board two months ago. It was the rebrand (SOYO) being sold for $85 (tax included). But because the warranty is questionable, I chose AsRock B550M Pro4 instead. It has better I/O, more M.2, more USB, better I/O shield, more SATA cable, and I think better VRM.

Great video! I’ve been wanting to get a cheap (but also reliable) B550 to replace my B450 so I can take advantage of PCIe 4.0 SSDs, or even newer GPUs like the 4070 that may be impacted by running on PCIe 3.0 due to its 192-bit bus. (Unpopular opinion) but Ryzen Master is actually pretty useful. I have basically zero experience with Intel XTU but I’d imagine it’s the same premise. But the 5600 has to be my favorite modern 6c/12t chip. Much like its predecessors (1600, 1600AF/2600, & 3600) it offers a very great balance between performance, cost, and power draw. With a 4.8Ghz OC + undervolt it’s an absolute powerhouse. Single core score is almost identical to a stock 5900x/5950x, and multi-core is above a 2700x/very close to a 3700x. Power draw is less than 100w 99% of the time, & temps go no higher than 75c max - which is only if the ambient temp in my room is warm (80F+), with the central AC running it won’t even break 70c. And that’s just with a Wraith Prism cooler, which isn’t known to be particularly amazing when compared to some aftermarket air coolers.

Hey, uh.. i hope that GA15DH board are still okay. The board schematics are similiar with Prime B450M K, soo maybe you could give it a shot crossflashing Prime B450M K bios to that GA15DH board, using flashrom 1.2, and see if it works. If it does, then that board would have the up to date bios (since the bios is now b450m k, it will recognize any b450m k bioses).
Just keep in mind to always dump the stock bios of that GA15DH since it contains MAC address. Flashrom would write the bios 1:1 so the mac address might need to be inserted to clean B450M K bios before using flashrom. Also need to extract the .cap so that you could flash the bios, without the .cap header. If you need help maybe i could help.

Reflashed another bios and all good. Please make sure to properly confirm dimensions and that the bios you're goingto flash comes from a motherboard that looks identical to yours(except the paintjob). There are some reddit stuff about it as well to help you out. I have a 5800x3d and plan to keep it for a long time.. but I dont know how it will perform long term. The 5800x3d matches the 7800x3d in cyberpunk, but it loses badly in Hogwarts. I'm not smart enough to know why that is, but based on that I think it's just going to come down to a roll of the dice.

Ooh, yeah! I love these cheap product dives. PC parts are incredibly expensive nowadays, and it's great to find out about lower cost options.
Also, I'm very happy that you didn't put out a video about the 4060, trying to lie to everyone that it's great. Like Dawid Does Tech Stuff did. I unsubbed him for that.
4060 has every spec (except clock speed) cut down drastically compared to the 3060. The only reason it does OK in benchmarks is DLSS3. It's still terrible value for money, with VRAM that you'd see on a 3060 from 3 years ago.
Turn of DLSS and you get maybe a 5% increase compared to the 3060, for $100 more, and no extra VRAM. AMD and Nvidia are f***ing over the midrange customers, and the last thing we need are "influencers" pretending its a good deal.

I thought Dawid Does Tech Stuff was only interested in the 4060 because it's the most powerful low profile card? Extreme SFF builds can make use of that.

    • @lewzealand4717
      @lewzealand4717 11 месяцев назад +1

Who benchmarks any card with DLSS and compares it to native on other cards and says that's great? Seriously, what are you watching/reading? And specs are not what matters: it's FPS and features for your money. And Dawid was reviewing the BEST low profile graphics card on the market - the Gigabyte 4060. That 4060 is the BEST in the category. If you disagree, point out the better card. It is sad that you don't understand context.

PC parts except new VGA cards are quite cheap today.
      32GB of OC grade DDR4-3600 costs 85$. 8 core CPU (R5 5800X) costs 200$. 2TB SSD drive sells for 100$.
If someone cannot afford new PC then Core i5 3rd-4th gen with 8GB of RAM and SSD are almost given away for 50-80$, and new 24" display can be bought for less than 80$.
Add new keyboard+mouse+little speakers, and for 200$ one can have decent PC for everyday tasks. Add used GTX1070 for 100$ for some gaming.
What is really bad, increased cost of basic living (food, gas, electricity) which everyone needs every day since 2020.

Not bad for those who require an AM4 board on a budget, whilst still supporting the last released CPU's for the AM4 platform.

its amazing with the more memory the faster the computer can process and the less power you use running programs
i honestly do not need 128GB of memory i only bought it to max out my motherboard
the only thing that sucks is i found out if you buy anything off ebay than he isn't covered by warranty.

Not the one for me, as it doesn't have enough PCIe slots, but maybe I can check their range to see if they have something that might be more my speed.
I work piecemeal for budget reasons, and my storage is spanned over many drives(I want all my games on my computer at all times, you never know when the urge to play a certain game will pop up, and I've had enough of long (down)loading times since upgrading from tape drive to floppy disks in 1992) and would need at least 4 SATA slots and 1 NVMe with space for upgrading via PCIe.

You can use an adapter and use the x16 slot, although it will be limited to 3000-3400mb speeds, because if I'm not mistaken it's PCIe 3.0 the 2nd x16 slot.
Or if you are using it for games and speed doesn't matter much you can even use an x1 adapter. Speeds are around 800-850mb, but in games it won't matter.
