just wanted to add my 2 cents to ppl that are looking to move to boston, i don't necessarily agree with some things said in the video!
    - north end and beacon hill actually aren't right next to each other, north end is a little before downtown and beacon hill is essentially right behind the boston commons/is basically downtown.
    - cambridge isn't removed from boston - literally the dividing line is just the charles river, and there's a bridge that you can walk over and be in the city in 10 mins by foot. i would actually argue that coming from allston might take you longer to get downtown than from cambridge, especially if you're near mit/harvard.
    - fenway actually isn't very affordable at all in terms of rent. it's one of the neighborhoods where you'll get the worst bang for your buck because rent can easily be at least $1200 per person (with roommates) and the rooms are TINY
    - maybe we just differ bc i actually think besides faneuil hall-ish area, majority of the nightlife is in back bay! if you wanna go to a legit club or wanna go to a bar/place you can dance, majority of these places are here. plus, there's a ton of places here to day drink, especially in the summer, so you will see young people
    - parts of dorchester intertwine with southie, you may not even know the difference. i made a reply to a comment below further talking about this, but roxbury/dorchester are neighborhoods of mostly minorites, and this contributes to the negative perceptions that people have of them. while some parts can be unsafe at night, there are fantastic areas with GREAT communities of people and can be amazing to live. def check out dudley cafe in roxbury - it's awesome
many of the neighborhoods that are being talked about in this vid are in the city and very expensive! boston can be pricey but doesn't need to be this costly. i would say most people actually tend to live around the city rather than directly in some of the earlier places she mentioned in the video. so if you're hearing the rent prices and thinking it's way too high, please know there are other options that are way more affordable, still serviced by train lines and will get you into the city in under 30 mins, and are really cute - check out somerville, allston, cambridge, charleston like she mentioned but also brighton, south medford, downtown malden, brookline (this area is sorta expensive tho), jamaica plain, and dorchester!

Current Southie resident, I will provide 1 caveat - yes you have a lot a space and yes it's mostly young people but it is also incredibly homogenous (0 diversity), pretty inaccessible by public transport, and kind of feels like an extension of frat row. Just my opinion.

the best places to live in the boston area for young people for cheap is allston/brighton, jamaica plain( especially if your in the healthcare field because its right near longwood medical area), and even some neighborhoods in Roxbury/Dorchester. and if you make good money than Cambridge MA is the best place to live out of all of them because there's soo much to do, (Harvad sq, Central sq, Gally, Davis sq in somerville, inman sq, fresh pond, charles river) and lots of restaurants everywhere . Every neighborhood in Cambridge is accessible by the mbta . East Cambridge is literally a 10 min walk from the green line and 15 min walk from the redline, so im not sure what she was talking about in the video.

Some comments from a native Bostonian:
    1. Cambridge and Somerville aren't neighborhoods in Boston.
    2. I'm really confused by your depiction of the South End. It's not "removed from the city" at all; it literally borders Back Bay and Chinatown. I live in the South End, and I can walk to Newbury Street - the main shopping street in Boston - in under 10 minutes. Also, out of all the neighborhoods in the city, the South End is the most well known for its restaurants. Tremont St is FULL of critically acclaimed, super popular restaurants and bars. Great nightlife.
    3. Roxbury and Dorchester are HUGE neighborhoods (Dot has the largest population of any neighborhoods in the city), so it's weird that you treated them like a monolith. More residential areas of Dot, like Savin Hill and Neponset, are really different from areas like Bowdoin/Geneva or Upham's Corner. Dot overall has one of the lowest crime rates in the city.

Generally great video, liked it! A lot of great information here. However, I would like to point out some mishaps I observed and as a Bostonian would love to clarify. Roxbury/Dorchester are definitely listed as least safest places in Boston, but there underlying issues behind all of this that need to be addressed and in the current climate can’t afford to be air-brushed. This is just something I felt needed to be said and shouldn’t take away from the overall great information given in the video.

@@sarahperk9600 i don't wanna speak for the previous commenter but just wanted to add input from what i understood! i think they were trying to say that there are negative perceptions about roxbury/dorchester that come from greater underlying issues that have nothing to do with the area itself. those neighborhoods are a lot more concentrated with minorities - specifically black and brown ppl, and unfortunately, this contributes to the automatic negative attitudes people have about these areas. also bc those parts of boston have considerably more people of color, funding and investment in these neighborhoods can be lacking, and the lack of development has lead to them being not as safe depending on which part you're in. i just wanted to point that out bc those areas aren't inherently unsafe, but unfortunately, racism and colorism has played a role in which neighborhoods have been invested in and are perceived to be "desirable"/more safe.

I've lived in Mission Hill. It's like one big off campus area and hearing drunk people all night can be annoying.
I gotta say you'll encounter more crazies in Central than Rox. With Roxbury, if you're not out looking for trouble, you'll be fine. It's also how you carry yourself.
Roslindale is also a great place. Tons of outdoor space available as well. The square isn't far from Forest Hills so if the orange line isn't on fire, it's not a bad option.

  • @kgerald401
    @kgerald401 4 года назад +34

I think it was extremely distasteful and disrespectful to say Roxbury and Dorchester are “unsafe”. It’s a part of a long-standing racially bias narrative about Boston because Boston is extremely segregated racially and that’s where a lot of black and Hispanic people tend to live. I’ve lived in Boston my entire life and I’m in my 20s and I’ve worked in downtown most of my life and I can tell you that I’ve always felt more unsafe in downtown & back bay (mainly non-residential neighborhoods) that I ever did walking around Dorchester or Roxbury (neighborhoods that are 95% residential) late at night. Boston is a city that has a very obvious problem with drug addiction especially with those who are homeless and therefore a lot of people tend to associate those places we are homeless people congregate as unsafe which a lot of is in downtown and throughout parts of Roxbury and south end.
Please if you’re watching this video looking for advice, please find someone who is actually from Boston and has lived here for years to give you advice because I feel like people who aren’t from Boston can’t really speak to what each neighborhood is like more than people who have lived here for decades. And this is coming from somebody who has lived & worked in most of the neighborhoods in Boston.
But again, do not listen to the rumors that Dorchester in Roxbury are super unsafe (things people believe bc that’s where most POC live) when you’re much more likely to get mugged or robbed in downtown or Back Bay at night.

Why are you seemingly qualifying “young people” as people only below like 24? You reference “late 20s/early 30s” as though we are home, settled down with babies and don’t leave the house.
Sorry, anyone watching this, I would take it with a grain of salt. This is someone who clearly doesn’t have much knowledge of the city or life experience.

Love your video but would like to see a map showing north side, south side, east side and west side. Just something to reference all the cities you are talking about. You should talk about what are the Main Street. Telling me about back bay doesn’t mean anything if I don’t know where it’s located from downtown. Still love the information. Example: Los Angeles is beautiful and ugly! North LA ( diverse food and people ) south LA ( black and Hispanic ) East LA ( Hispanic and Asian food ) west LA ( diverse ). The valley is diverse and many middle eastern food and people. I’m cool with all race as a Hispanic, I have work in Europe and Asia. Let’s move away from race. Malibu had beautiful beaches and not that crowded as other LA beaches. Santa Monica has the most international people visiting so it is the busy beach. Venice beach has the most homeless, drugs, poor, rich, skateboarding, weird people. Marina del Rey: boats and boats. Lax beaches are for some locals. Manhattan beach: 30 to 99 year olds and expensive. Hermosa beach: 21 years old to 40 years beach goers and party people. Redondo beach is for family. Palos Verdes is old money and no freeway. Good site seeing and not that crowded ( local only ). Long Beach ghetto fabulous and on the rise for a better future ( snoop dogg ). Huntington Beach: all ages beach people family, surf, whatever. Newport Beach: money money money. Boats and H***! Laguna beach: Good vibes! (Family and friends) small beach! No homeless not ghetto! OC life! All beaches located on pacific coast highway 1. We have good weather and great restaurants before COVID! Anything at the beach is beautiful but not Venice beach! Rent with roomates is 1000! Rent alone is starting $1700. Traffic is horrible! Hollywood is trash! For outsiders I would recommend Hermosa beach and OC county! I still love LA!

Stop talking about people in their late 20’s like we are decrepit. We don’t all have kids and stuck at home

Let's include why boston is the best city in the country, most sports championships , best schools ,best hospitals , number 1 in tech most platforms like Facebook, Twitter, etc yes from boston Twitter named the tweet because he loved Larry bird from the celtics , also first police department and fire department started in boston ,most comics come from boston ,joe rogan bill burr etc, the richest history and forming of America started in Charleston bunker Hill, we are also commonwealth ,we are a hybrid between democrat and republican, we also don't deal with the dumb shit looting and Antifa , we love our police not a police shooting not justified sense 1994 . Boston is God's country dont ever confuse it, new york is a expensive toilet managed by Cummo and Deblasio the dynamic duo of dip shits.
