Salem used to be so great before social media came along, same with anything else that used to be nice and enjoyable. Social media turned everything enjoyable into a clusterfück nightmare. People argue it made it better for business owners, but they were doing fine before with enough business to make good money while still being enjoyable experience for visitors. Now everywhere is just way too completely crowded, you can enjoy anything.
As a Floridian who was visiting Boston just last week - I have a brand new appreciation for driving in south Florida. I had to drive downtown Boston , never having been there before , to go park at a garage for a 20 min walk to TD Gardens to see Peter Gabriel. That traffic was an absolute horror show! At one point I was in a wrong lane, a left turning lane and needed to be in the right - I bet you I held that traffic up until I could get over to right just as that light was about to turn red. The lady behind me was so mad waving me over while there is on coming traffic. I’m not dying for you lady - you can all wait just like you did. At another point the GPS took us up some alley way to come out and go left - in two way traffic! Cars parked on both sides of the street, no sign of slowing down , again I had to be aggressive and put my hand out to let that driver know stop, I’m coming out - and I came out slow enough the oncoming from right stopped too but my god if I hadn’t made that move, no telling how long we’d have sat there! White knuckles! And I was renting a car so that really had me tripping. Finally finding the entry to the parking deck was literally only for the native Bostonian to recognize . It was so non-distinguished you’d only know if you’re from there. But we made it in - Garage at Post Office Square I believe it was. Such a tiny almost invisible entrance ! I got in, parked and almost had a meltdown. I thought downtown Miami is bad after an event ! Well, it is … but this is just as bad or possibly worse. Leaving after the show wasn’t nearly as bad. Thank Goodness for that. Salem - we visited there too , just as crazy traffic. People driving like they lost their minds - now I know why our traffic gets so crazy during season when all the snow birds come down ! I’m gonna be looking at them tags from Mass a whole lot differently now ! Lol Having said all that -- we really did enjoy Boston and Salem and the people in general (not driving) that we met. Great vibes there. I’ll visit again but next time? No driving!
Yeah absolutely agree with that. I always feel bad for people visiting who don't know what they're getting into. The driving and parking is SO crazy. Glad to hear you had a good time though. You can do pretty well with commuter rail and Ubers!
learning to park in Boston can be a challenge I live in suburb about 1 hr west. I have to manipulate parking options. parking on brookline side near fenway and max out parking paying a few dollars to walk as far as the prudential building. or lower east side of Cambridge to walk to Charlestown or even the downtown. willing to walk the extra minutes to budget on parking. there are metro busses always running if you want to save on walking time.
Ugh driving into Salem is the worst. I work for a law firm that does real estate and until recently the Registry of Deeds for the southern district of Essex County was in Salem so I had to go there all the time and it was always just a shit show. You should have just taken the commuter rail from North Station! Though there’s always the chance that damn train breaks down or hits some guy on its way (not exaggerating)
Don't forget the winter road salt. Turns your $100k diesel truck, or your $25k econobox into a pile of scrap in 12 years flat (or less!). Then insurance costs, annual inspections, and annual excise taxes on that same pile of scrap. If the roads don't do it in, I can promise you, the road salt will!
That’s why you get your car washed in the winter. If you notice, the car washes are always packed in the winter. It helps prevent rust from the road salt.
@@mastersnet18 Lol. You young people think you’ve got alll the answers. High pressure water forces the salt into areas it would never naturally get into, and will NOT come out, rotting it from the inside. You can rinse it with a low pressure hose, but kind of hard to do when it’s frozen solid. Only solution is oiling your vehicle every fall, preferably twice through the winter. I kept an ‘07 Silverado alive this way for 16 years. Some of the worst metal GM has ever produced. Thin, low quality, off-shore-sourced metal.
@@SmittySmithsonitethat’s why you have to get your undercarriage washed. That is what prevents rust. And I’m FLATTERED that you called me young 😂as I’m a ripe old 34 years old. My husband ran a car wash years ago so I know this stuff.
@@mastersnet18 you can believe what you want, but you’re actually better off, leaving it all there for the winter and washing it off in the spring, for the same reasons, I mentioned. Yep, 34 is very young.😊
@@SmittySmithsonite if you want to remain a stubborn idiot and leave salt on your car by all means go ahead. You’ve GOT to be trolling because anyone who lives where it snows knows this.
This is great, and accurate. I've been called Angeler so many times. I moved to Boston from the Atlanta area close to 10 years ago, biggest culture shock EVER, and I lived in Mississippi for a hot second, even more culture shock. BUT, I couldn't see myself living anywhere else now :)
Traffic SUCKS!!!!! I traveled to Boston for work in the off hours(3-11Pm) on the Mass Pike and their was always traffic. I recently retried and I don't miss commuting!
As a Boston/Massachusetts native it's so annoying when the people here don't use their blinker, like I'm sorry you want to live dangerously but some of us want to live🤦♀️🤦♀️😭😭
Finding anything is on another level from anywhere else in North America. Some of the highways are 95south and 93north at the same time things lie that. Sarcasm. Southerners have no idea when a joke starts and stops but love them all.
I'm a proud Californian, but now a care taker for my parents in Florida. The worst aspect of living here are idiots who don't signal. I see on average at least 3 car accidents a week due to morons who don't bother to use their blinker.
I moved to MA from TX a few years ago. I had the same car for many years without issue and drove it to MA. As soon as I got to MA I had to replace most of my front suspension. Parts of Texas had 70+ consecutive days of 100F+ weather this year so I'm happy to experience some cold and snow up here. I work from home so the weather is mostly a non issue for me. I do agree that drivers here are bad - worse than I'm used to in Texas but I'm a careful driver and haven't had any issues yet. I would say my main complaint about Boston is the cost of parking and insane high cost of living which is insane compared to most of the country. The rest are none issues as there is no perfect place. Overall, I'm glad to be here.
I lived in Andover from 2007 to 2008 when i was an exchange student from germany. I enjoyed living in Massachusetts, such a beautiful state and wonderful people. But i have to admit that the winter was tough though :D
I’m coming home from Salem Mass. I’d love to live in that area. The only thing I’d have trouble with is the winters. Boston is beautiful too, but when you’re not used to that kind of traffic it’s a bit scary.
I've only been to Boston once and i was only there for however long it took to get out of the airport and on the hwy north. Best description of that short stint is "harrowing." I was in disbelief.
I wish there were a way to tell out of towners NOT to drive in Boston! I feel bad for them. I don't even have a license, but I'm lucky I have friends to drive me. 🤓 I've always lived near public transportation. Sorry you got that harrowing experience. :(
You alluded to it, but for me another top ranking problem was no where to *legally* park. Everyone likes to drive places, but everywhere you go is stingy on the parking. It’s not only an inconvenience that makes you late for everything, but it’s also part of that cost of living thing. You WILL have a pile of parking tickets. I don’t care how careful and law-abiding you think you are...
You're absolutely right. When I was in college, I amassed dozens of tickets over the 4 years because I was in a rush. Really brutal at times. We are in constant need for more spaces.
@@livinginmassachusetts25 On more than one occasion I had to briefly leave whatever coffee shop/restaurant/pub/store I was at to run and plug my parking meter. Only to find that while I still had a minute or two left on the meter, I had been preemptively awarded with an opportunity to fund the local parking authority! Not worth the time/trouble to contest it... cost of living in Boston! Still loved that town.
On my first trip to Boston I was trapped on one-way streets with impatient drivers honking. Ended up on Beacon Hill and kept circling until I found a parking space. Charles went the other way back then back to Storrow Drive.
I grew up there. I try to describe to people outside of New England what it's like to get up early to shovel the snow before going to work. Then when you get home from a long day to shovel your way back in after a full day of plows doing their job. Also in order to survive on the road you must be aggressive. Rarely will anyone yield. And expect a lot of middle finger gestured at you.
I'm 55 and I grew up in Cambridge. Took the T, rode my bike, or walked everywhere I went. Never got my driver's license. Never cared to. Driving in Boston is crazy and for fools. Where do you live now?
It took me a damn year to stop asking for a meatball grinder, or ask if you want to make a packy run. 20 years later I work in IT with a manger from Boston wanting to know how I'm analyzing the dater.
Omg. Truth. Ask for a grinder in AZ they had no clue. Ask for Jimmies in your ice cream. Ask for a drink from a bublar. They think you want to drink from the irrigation. Everything out here is NSEW. Take West and head onto main street. Me bang a left hang a right. Packy? Liquor Store here.
@@livinginmassachusetts25 omg Massachusetts truly is a unique state. People out here just give you that dead pan face when you ask for things that are common place in Mass.I think the exception would be FLA. I'm sure with everyone living there from the N East they know what grinders and Jimmies are!
I’ve lived in Massachusetts my whole life (lived in Lynn, Salem and now Peabody) and I can truthfully say I have never heard ‘grinder’. It’s always ‘sub sandwich’ or just ‘sub’.
Hubby and I spent 60 years of our lives in Massachusetts, then 18 years ago we moved to Georgia. Natives can't understand us and we can't understand them. One of the first things we were asked was "say pahk the cah". Still miss the Cape. Your video is hilarious!
They don't like Yankees who move here, they call us Damn Yankees. As soon as we open our mouths, they look at us like we have 2 heads. They are not friendly, just nosey. I tell them all, "we don't have an accent, YOU DO." That shuts them up. 🙂
When i first moved to Massachusetts I truly could not understand a word of the Boston accent 9:53 I felt so 😞 bad.. I understand it perfectly now and new England in my opinion is the best place to live in the USA hands down. most ppl I met were nice .. straightforward, and were good to me..I absolutely love it there 💓
It's never stated, but it's true that every Boston person doesn't talk like the "typical" or should I say, stereotypical, way. I've had not one, but two boyfriends who were brought up here in the Boston neighborhoods, and they "talk normal." And both over seventy now, so they are from the neighborhoods. It's largely the working class types who have that accent. But I've heard all types from all classes. Then there's the old time upper crust accent which is subtler but definitely an accent. I don't know any of those LOL, but I do sometimes run into them! I think they're a dying breed, but as I say I don't really know one well. You hear it in some of the older politicians from the North Shore.
Oh! I just thought of someone. Anthony Sammarco, the historian. He has stuff on RUclips. He grew up in Dorchester, but sounds like Old Boston, and he's about sixty. He's on RUclips. Also Rose Kennedy, also on RUclips. JFK and his brothers, I'm told have a Cape Cod accent.
It's ok to move to Massachusetts, just don't move to Boston. It's full of people like this guy who can't comprehend other parts of the state exist. Boston realtors are out of control and claim that the overblown prices they created are "market value".
We moved from Arkansas to Massachusetts in 2000. What a culture shock. The cost of everything there was crazy. I'm originally from Western New York too.
Definitely can get expensive. Although, I'm currently on a road trip with my wife and I'm noticing a lot of places are starting to catch up to Massachusetts with their costs...even in the south.
@@livinginmassachusetts25 Can you name some of the southern states? How about the cost of living in Georgia? I currently reside in Georgia and am considering a move to Massachusetts.
The driving part is hilarious 😂😂😂 I hate mass driver's but they taught me to hold my own when driving anywhere else in the country including Puerto Rico 😂😂
Everyone says tonic for soda and frappe for a real milk shake. If you want just flavored shook up milk then you ask for a milk shake. Lived there 15 years. Just wondered a week ago if roundabouts were still called rotaries. You answered my question.
I'm seeing some very harsh negative comments. I've lived in L.A, S.D, NYC, Miami, south of France. Number 1 advantage: a very safe place to raise children, very good public schools overall. studies show its the safest U.S city by far. Living cheaper is great. Living longer is better .. just saying Number 2: 4 seasons ... the Spring and Autumn are beautiful , the summer on the Atlantic is also amazing. If you can get time away for some time after New Year's through third week of February it breaks the worst part of the winter. Number 3 : utilities : well in Miami HVAC goes year round in Massachusetts its turned on in October off in April Number 4: some of the most beautiful coastal towns and Sand dunes on the planet Number 5: you can shop at Neiman's and not worry about running for your life like in L.A or being followed home in Palm Beach county by thieves. ( you know its true) .. the neighborhoods are all gated in south Florida for a reason. Number 6: quickest access to Europe in the U.S for work or vacations Number 7: proximity to NYC for fun without being in a filthy ..criminal hel l hole year round Number 8 : ground doesn't shake, hills don't slide and rarely have to worry about your house collapsing in a hurricane along with your insurance carrier. Same goes for condos . not collapsing into the sand .... Number 9: plentiful fresh water supply .... don't underestimate the importance of that I see a lot of L.A people moving in ... there's a reason As far as the people are not friendly .... they're also not fake like in L.A or putting on airs like from Palm Beach to Miami.. they can't be that bad or the towns wouldn't be safe remember : when the Marathon attack occurred people ran towards the injured and helped the political extremists are mostly in Cambridge ... In all my time there . I didn't know any far left people ........ The property is expensive , yes ..... but what does that tell you? Its only cheap where people are running away from.
The worst in Boston is during Daylight savings season. Having it get dark at 4pm is demoralizing. You go to work when it's dark out and you end work when it's dark out. Some weeks you don't even get to hang out during daylight.
Everybody talks about how bad the traffic is in and around Boston. Something people rarely talk about is how bad the roads are. If you drive inside the 495 belt for a period of time you WILL need to replace tires, suspension components, and undercarriage trim pieces. The roads and highways are rough and falling apart, despite being under construction constantly
My biggest annoyance is that everyone assumes Boston is the only thing in MA. It's NOT. There is so much more to the state. Not everything is Boston prices. I've lived in VT, NH, MA, CT, NC, FL, WI, NM, AZ, Vegas and Mexico City. Europe 3x and I have to say the best health care I ever had was when I lived in MA even on the western side of the state. Top notch doctors from the best schools and they keep up their education. I worked in healthcare my whole life and there are doctors who haven't upgraded their mindsets since their med school days. MA doctors pride themselves on keeping up.
You talked about the beginning of the college years What about Storrow Drive. Trucks versus the low bridges but overall it is a regular day to day occurrence that a truck is on Storrow Drive where they are not supposed to be and tip off the top of the trucks roofs or just get wedged under the bridge causing a traffic jam
As a person that lives in Massachusetts it’s a little dangerous here one time here in Leominster Massachusetts we had a huge flood killing lots of people
The winter of 2023 basely had snow. I think the year before was almost the same. The winters are not what they used to be. They never fix potholes? Where in Massachusetts do you live? South Boston? Roads could be better but maybe I'm used to it. Agree about the roads like Storrow Drive and Jamaica Way and similar - you have to be a good confident driver. The only way to get around Boston traffic is knowing the city really and that takes along time. Boston is a very difficult city to navigate.
@0:30 Having my extended family from Boston area and me growing up in Key West, FL and Jacksonville (Thx Pop and US Navy) I really wanna see why I shouldn't have came back.
I'm a Louisiana native living up North now. Boston street layout is confusing. Especially the way all the streets run into each other without a stop sign or light.
My father-in-law just got it. He couldn't get out of bed for a week. Luckily, we caught it early and got him antibiotics before it became a longterm problem.
I live in Boston and that's great photo of conn(ah) of Salem and Prince Streets...Bova's was my favorite bakery but but now it's Table. I'm on Commercial Street and love it here. Do leave in late Fall for SW Florida though.
Born in Fitchburg and grew up in Winchendon which surprisingly was a good town for my childhood. Its largest employer at the time was a toilet seat factory. I earned money sanding furniture for painting in a local manufacturing plant. Most likely these old buildings are empty and these things are made in China. Fortunately, this working class poor kid from central Massachusetts got his butt out of there and made good.
I’ve been looking at MA real estate lately to move to escape all the things you mentioned thinking it was better by you, but apparently it’s all worse.
O driving in Mass is a hair raising experience. If your the passenger you've got your invisible brake always at the ready and your fingers permanently embedded in the dashboard. Other than that your fine! I actually got my license in Massachusetts on a snowy day in December. I guess I got it because we came back alive!
The sales tax rate is 6.25%, The income tax is 5% and neither are nowhere near the top five highest. No tax on groceries or clothing. Unless you're buying cigarettes or marijuana then you pay out the Yazoo
My best advice as someone who never wanted to live here but now has to: it's called New England for a reason. It's so much like England. Taxes, costs, the lack of the food you thought was common in your hometown. Hyper-localized, self obsessed. Backhanded. Unattractive. But generally clean. That's why the English love it.
The food? Mmmm have you had a clambake in Maine? Have you checked out Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg In Webster Mass? I actually had to learn that name as a kid because my uncle was born and raised in Webster. He would quiz us on it too! See these are the things so unique to Massachusetts! Its the gems we hold so dear and near to our hearts!
What !!!! Bahhhaaaa Absolutely nonsense please don't compare my England to this place that's disrespectful. Its nothing like London England we are sophisticated in Europe Massachusetts Don't even call it an Irish town, in fact the Irish in Ireland are embarrassed with Boston trust me, and yeah it's very racist. You call that Fish and Chips LMAO 🤣
I lived about 6 miles outside boston, went to high school in Brookline, drove in Boston all the time. Currently live in Plainville and encounter Rhode Island drivers all the time. HANDS DOWN they are by FAR waaaay worse than boston area drivers.
thousands of rhode island residents commute to massachusetts I remember in spring of 2020 I went to providence to check out a bagel shop i returned to our state and pulled into market basket in south Attleboro and saw the license plates on some of the cars I realized that citizens of the state commute for work. we also have more work opportunities.
@@scottbrenham1341 I've noticed that too living in Plainville. Being right on the border there are tons of RI plates in my area. Side note, a Market Basket might be built in Plainville just past 495 on the right where that industrial park is. Here's hoping.
1. Packie = Liquor store. 2.Tonic= soda pop. 3.Jimmies = (Ice cream) sprinkles. 4.Blinkers = Turn signals. 5.Bang a-you-e = turn around. 6.carriage = shopping cart. 7.Dungarees = Jeans. 8 Bubbler = water fountain. 9. clicker= remote control. 10. supper=dinner. 11. The Pike = Interstate 90. 12. Regular = Coffee with milk and sugar. Just remember to drop your R's and replace it with a subtle ah and you're in Kid. Welcome to Mass !
Another thing with the roads and winter they salt them due to the snow and ice and that salt absolutely ravages the cars. They will get rusty and become unfixable and worthless. You need to undercoat them and wash them every week
MATT, YOU ARE SOOOOOO SPOT ON! BORN IN MASS, LIVED IN MASS. MARBLEHEAD, SOUTH BOSTON, MALDEN, BEFROE THE HIGH CRIME AND DRUGS, WEYMOUTH, AND IT IS ALL GOING TO HELL.
You wanna talk about how to pronounce stuff! Look at Oklahoma!!!! They literally have a town called Slaughterville! And roads like Chautauqua! Other towns like NON, Cookietown, and Miami. AND NONE OF THESE ARE HOW YOU THINK THEY ARE PRONOUNCED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not to mention Sapulpa OK.
I've been to a couple of cities and by far, Massachusetts is exactly what this guy is talking about. The biggest take away is the driving and the roads are TERRIBLE! They're uneven, different types of pavement on same section of roads, like someone dumped a variety of concrete and then half way smoothed it out. Unclear lanes and turning lanes. Pot holes galore everywhere. Very aggressive drivers so trying to make a turn, even with your blinker, you feel like that's your time to get re-ended. I like New Hampshire much, much better.
Lol, that's the great thing about New England though, if you like NH better, it's just a stones throw away. You can go from Rhode Island to Maine quicker than you can go from one side of Pennsylvania to the other. Pick your flavor of New England and base yourself out of there. That's why our team is licensed in multiple states...including NH. Thank you so much for watching, Jennifer.
@@livinginmassachusetts25 Well as much as I would love to find a place in NH, the catch is that I am on a travel assignment in Nashua from Kentucky. I am having a horrible time trying to find housing close enough to the hospital and the affordable place I was able to find was in Massachusetts. I'd rather be in NH but can't live there if I can't find housing. Just one of those things....
Hey, we totally get it. It's tough out there in general right now. If you ever need any help feel free to shoot Matt an email or text. He actually owns quite a few units up there.
I loved Boston, but I saw a black limo park in the middle of the street in front of a restaurant. The cops drove around them and nobody said anything to anyone. They all looked the other way, so I assume the occupants were "connected."
Although I lived my first seven years in the California Bay Area, moving to Massachusetts was horrible! Schools were way harder than California schools! I hated the way people talked because they sounded ignorant. What is with tonic and jimmies anyway? Being 😊seven going on eight, I tried extremely hard to retain my California accent and nevah lowah myself to "talk Massachusetts talk"😊. That went on for the next twenty-three years. That was until I got to move back to California. I had discovered that I actually had the Massachusetts accent! Mainly because I talked so fast and I would leave the last letters out, like shorthand. I learned that I couldn't pronounce the word "forward!" Unknowingly, I was saying "foahwid!" After living back where I was born for about 40 years, but with Covid and layoffs happening, the cost of living has gone through the roof, we decided to move again. We wanted to go "back east" but to Maine. Not practical to travel across country with 11 cats! So we decided to move to Sparks, Nevada (next to Reno). And that's the end of the story. 😊
Finally got my family out ,and Far Away from Plymouth county, -The towns surrounding the Plymouth Nuclear Power Plant have all joined together in passing legislature to Prevent the Transportation of Nuclear Waste through their Cities and Towns from the Power plant in the event of a Radiation leak or accident. - So now the Nuke Waste measured in Metric Tons is being Stock Piled on the Power plant property - If an Accident happens they have 15 Extra minutes to Get out and clog up the highways?? Lol - Smarter if you get out before you Move in.
Hell tourists don’t use their blinkers in mass either, the amount of tourist dodging I’ve had to do , no one better say anything about our driving! Lol
Mmmm.....I've been in more accidents here in Phoenix AZ then I ever have in Massachusetts. Ppl here are from everywhere and their driving is worse. The difference is though that here They don't drive on your bumper. People don't try to cut you off in a car when there is an inch space.other than thst they drive crazy.
Traffic. Old cities have all the roads leading straight in and out. So they back up and clog. A newer design uses circular main roads with exits on and off. The Big Dig was only a temporary fix. Increasing population and therefore cars, will negate any gains realized from that project.
I think groceries in Massachusetts are cheaper than elsewhere and there is no sales tax on food. My snowbird neighbors think food prices in Florida are wicked bad.
I'm from Canada but I have a lot of family from Boston and Salem so I have been thinking of moving to Salem not only because of the history of the place but because of the family connection. overall the places that I have been looking at price wise aren't that bad.

@@maximilian9295 Personally, yes, but not everyone is like that. I have spoken to people who are nice, and then people who are not so nice. Just depends on the person honestly. People up here, just aren't used to the Southern hospitality, that we Southerns are used to. For example, i once asked a older couple, and i mainly addressed the woman, for directions while taking a walk. She was extremely hostile, and even screamed at me. They were in a truck. She had yelled me, "Get away from us! No! Not giving you directions! Bye!". I wasn't sure if she was just a bitch or if it was because of Covid. I ended up in a argument with her because she didn't know im from Atlanta, and that i have no problem arguing back and i cussed them out. Lmao! But honestly here on the Cape, i have met more nice and respectful people then rude ones. I believe it really just depends on where you live, here in Massachusetts or any other place on the East Coast. People who live in Boston or any other big cities on the East Coast, are a lot more mean and rude, then people who live in smaller towns, like within Cape Cod for example. I try not to stretch out conversations when i pass people on the street or in a store. I usually just keep it simple, like "Hey how are you?", "Have a good day/night", or just "Hello" or "Goodbye". I came to realize that people up here like to keep to themselves and are usually busy, don't like talking much with strangers. Completely different than in the South. It just takes some getting used to. Not to sound weird or anything, but do you live anywhere near Cape Cod? I'm looking for new friends. I haven't really meet anyone around my age yet. I'm so bored. It's driving me nuts lol. Oh also I'm 22 btw.
Taylor, the huge ants sound a little odd...we definitely get ants over in Wellfleet but I'm not sure if that's the norm of the area. Also, Cape winters can be quite rough. Have you every thought about moving closer to Boston down the road?
More like 10 reasons to not move to boston. The suburbs of the cities and the small towns around Massachusetts can be really nice. There are so many conservation areas and nature/hiking trails. Camping availability is mixed. I do lots of outdoor activities and gardening, have trails through a private forest i cut in my backyard too. Its also a Massachusetts tradition to have a beautiful yard/lawn. I dont like ticks either but im not a baby about them. You can put on bug spray and avoid tall grassy brush areas and outdoor pets will pick them up too so you need to check up your pet regularly, give them a repellent collar and prevention methods. I ussually pick my ticks off by hand and burn them with a lighter. We even used small container with iso once to drop them in and they die. You can also get chickens and they'll kill ticks massivly. I have been bit 4 times this year but i always treat the bite site with antibiotic regularly, and i get the tick off before it's been 24 hours- that's how you avoid lyme disease. I cut out refined sugars and alcohol in my diet and mosquitos are much less interested in me than when i was younger. Parking is much better outside the city too. I never have a problem driving in the suburbs for errands. I agree drivers can be crazy around here. Most people are competent thou you have to drive defensively to avoid accidents read signs. I have been driving here ten years and seen 4 accidents happen, been in 2. Always check blindspots drive slow when uncertain. Let crazy drivers go ahead of you dont keep them behind you. Ive seen some crazy road rage and been a victim of others but ive been lucky i have kept my cool and laugh off everyone's silly bad driving. I keep my breaks, tires and car maintained so i can stop before hitting people. It's paided off a few times already👍
I'm living now in The Philippines and I'm a filipino and I have the plan to live in Massachusetts to have an easy acces to get in and out from NY to get a job there. It's expensive to live in NY so that is why.
its kind of funny hearing about ticks and approaches outside Scandinavia. Its literally no big deal here, you just pop that sucker off and generally you're good. Lyme isn't a guarantee, the CDC/Wild and Game or whatevs should have a map indicating areas of registered infections. However. That thing of freezing it? I assume to turn it over to a lab so it can be registered. Dude thats smart. Thats a very community minded move. I like that.
There are pros and cons to everything and every state! Boston born here, grew up in northeastern NJ which is crowded by beautiful and often times miss it! Lived and worked in Manhattan for a couple of years or so and then moved from central NJ to MA! Don't forget the excise tax everyone has to pay on their cars, another expense! I love it here and there are far worst places one could live in like Alabrama, Mississippi, Florida and Texas with it's horrible heat waves, massive hurricanes and politics! Every winter I thank God I don't live in the midwest or around the Great Lakes or in Buffalo NY with their horrendous winter blizzards! Winters on the Cape are mild in comparison! Thanks for the run downs, reminds me of my late beloved mom who worked in "Beantown" and dropped her "R"s, everything ending in a ended up with an 'er"! lol smdh
? The accent originated with the Puritans who came to the area from East Anglia in the 17th century. People in East Anglia drop the r the end of words. The accent was also influenced by 19th and 20th century immigrants from Ireland.

If you’re new to Boston, stay away from Salem in October. It’s unbelievable!
Go once
Just park in Danvers or Peabody and walk in.
@@squirrelattackspidy personally I loved it:)
@@sab3295 Hey, with all the Dunks in the area we can all stand to lose a few pounds. 🤣
Lol
Having said all that -- we really did enjoy Boston and Salem and the people in general (not driving) that we met.
You're a true New Englander in our eyes
Wow. Thanks for that information. You pretty much talked me out of moving there.
SO BAD. Lowell is notoriously bad for quick lane changes with no blinker...but then again, so is the rest of the state!
Mabe they are out of blinker fluid.
GROW UP!
I just moved to Massachusetts from New York 2 months ago, he’s spot on with everything! 😅
Haha if you ever need to move to a new area in MA let us know! Glad you agree with our assessment.
I moved up here from Texas, but I'm a Louisiana native.
I lived in Andover from 2007 to 2008 when i was an exchange student from germany. I enjoyed living in Massachusetts, such a beautiful state and wonderful people. But i have to admit that the winter was tough though :D
Yeah, Andover gets a fair amount of snow too 😁. Thanks for watching!
Traffic can be awful, but get to Worcester middle Mass area and that changes.
It's the state of Massachusetts, not the state of Boston.
This is true
@@Metacomet7 Yes, and apologies for generalizing. I lived in and around Boston and only travelled west a handful of times.
It sucks. Will celebrate the day I escape. From 40+ year resident.
On my first trip to Boston I was trapped on one-way streets with impatient drivers honking. Ended up on Beacon Hill and kept circling until I found a parking space. Charles went the other way back then back to Storrow Drive.
Haha the driving is SO bad around there. Glad you made it out okay.
Ahahahaha this is an all-time classic comment. Thanks for watching!
Omg.
🤣😂 you nailed it. This is a prime example of a true a New Englander sticking out in a different state.
Do you think people from Georgia are less polite, less friendly, and not as nice as people from Massachusetts?
Clark the aardvark parked his car in Harvard yard. When my husband says this in his Boston accent I crack up!
I wish people realized that not all of Massachusetts talks like they are from Boston. As a western Massachusetts native I hate that.
Responding to this comment from the Cape right now. Thanks for watching and commenting!
I understand it perfectly now and new England in my opinion is the best place to live in the USA hands down. most ppl I met were nice .. straightforward, and were good to me..I absolutely love it there 💓
Haha it's good to hear that perspective. It truly is a unique accent for a unique place. Are you still in MA?
Although, I'm currently on a road trip with my wife and I'm noticing a lot of places are starting to catch up to Massachusetts with their costs...even in the south.
that’s the position i’m in. i’ve got maybe 2k to my name right now and i’m wanting to get out of here. i’ve always loved mass.
@@livinginmassachusetts25 Can you name some of the southern states? How about the cost of living in Georgia? I currently reside in Georgia and am considering a move to Massachusetts.

I'm seeing some very harsh negative comments. I've lived in L.A, S.D, NYC, Miami, south of France.
Number 1 advantage: a very safe place to raise children, very good public schools overall. studies show its the safest U.S city by far. Living cheaper is great. Living longer is better .. just saying
Number 2: 4 seasons ... the Spring and Autumn are beautiful , the summer on the Atlantic is also amazing. If you can get time away for some time after New Year's through third week of February it breaks the worst part of the winter.
Number 3 : utilities : well in Miami HVAC goes year round in Massachusetts its turned on in October off in April
Number 4: some of the most beautiful coastal towns and Sand dunes on the planet
Number 5: you can shop at Neiman's and not worry about running for your life like in L.A or being followed home in Palm Beach county by thieves. ( you know its true) .. the neighborhoods are all gated in south Florida for a reason.
Number 6: quickest access to Europe in the U.S for work or vacations
Number 7: proximity to NYC for fun without being in a filthy ..criminal hel l hole year round
Number 8 : ground doesn't shake, hills don't slide and rarely have to worry about your house collapsing in a hurricane along with your insurance carrier. Same goes for condos . not collapsing into the sand ....
Number 9: plentiful fresh water supply .... don't underestimate the importance of that
I see a lot of L.A people moving in ... there's a reason
As far as the people are not friendly .... they're also not fake like in L.A or putting on airs like from Palm Beach to Miami.. they can't be that bad or the towns wouldn't be safe
remember : when the Marathon attack occurred people ran towards the injured and helped
the political extremists are mostly in Cambridge ...
True test of a Boston driver is how they handle the Storrow Drive 500! I may have Mississippi tags, but I learned to drive on the roads inside RT-128!
Yup! Everyday, another box truck stuck on storrow. Also, merging is BRUTAL!
Don’t get Storrowed!
When i was a kid in the 70's, I would routinely drive Storro Drv. at 100 mph.
As an Orlando, Florida resident,,,, u tu our city is heaven!!! Thank you
Everybody talks about how bad the traffic is in and around Boston.
Yaaaaas!❤
You’re hilarious! Thanks for making this video.
Thank you for watching! People like you make it worth it, hopefully you got some value.
Can you please tell me where is better to live? Peabody MA or Naples Florida?
I would say Peabody because you have the fall foliage and the change of seasons. Naples is just heat and humidity all year round.
You talked about the beginning of the college years
What about Storrow Drive.
Trucks versus the low bridges but overall it is a regular day to day occurrence that a truck is on Storrow Drive where they are not supposed to be and tip off the top of the trucks roofs or just get wedged under the bridge causing a traffic jam
Boston never heard of it ... I live in the Berkshires
Me too. So beautiful out here especially in the Fall.
You folks have a lot of pros over Boston!

Born in Fitchburg and grew up in Winchendon which surprisingly was a good town for my childhood. Its largest employer at the time was a toilet seat factory. I earned money sanding furniture for painting in a local manufacturing plant. Most likely these old buildings are empty and these things are made in China.

MATT, YOU ARE SOOOOOO SPOT ON! BORN IN MASS, LIVED IN MASS. MARBLEHEAD, SOUTH BOSTON, MALDEN, BEFROE THE HIGH CRIME AND DRUGS, WEYMOUTH, AND IT IS ALL GOING TO HELL.
Thanks for watching Linda. Are you still in MA?
Love Mass----can't afford it, so I live in NH and visit from time to time and go home to where I can afford
Ik which exact blizzards u was talking about I went out on my porch no shirt on and faced it like a crackhead the snow was up to my waist in da yard
Haha! It was the most extreme MA weather ever! Glad to see someone else goes shirtless into the snow lol.
A LITTLE EXPENSIVE???? ARE YOU NUTS??? BOSTON UNIVERSITY JUST RAISED ITS TUITION TO OVER $61,000.00 PER YR!
What if I don't want to live anywhere near Boston?? What about just the middle part ?? Is that the same as Boston???
Very different. We just recorded a video about Central Massachusetts on Monday. Stay tuned!
Central and Western MA are amazing. And of course cheaper than East Coast MA..
@@valmacclinchy Yes, because the job market is very, very limited.
@@maryellis7622 limited compared to Boston, but not very limited. Many people work from home now...
Love this guy
Thanks Matt! We appreciate you!
You do realize that most of the state is west of Boston.
Seasons no good
I loved Boston, but I saw a black limo park in the middle of the street in front of a restaurant.
I live on the north shore in Manchester by the Sea.
How do you like living there?
There's also alot of deer ticks in North Carolina. The roads here suck too. There's literally always road construction.
Yuck, Deer Ticks are so awful, so much disease!
Ur so right about the potholes & winters,Boston traffic,optional blinkers,ticks(burn em out),the R's,lol.Taxes,high prices. But it's home.🤪🥳🤯🤠🤣
A lot to dislike....but still home!
Hell tourists don’t use their blinkers in mass either, the amount of tourist dodging I’ve had to do , no one better say anything about our driving! Lol
Worst roads and worst drivers in the country!
Can't argue with that!
Don't forget worst traffic.
Traffic. Old cities have all the roads leading straight in and out. So they back up and clog. A newer design uses circular main roads with exits on and off. The Big Dig was only a temporary fix. Increasing population and therefore cars, will negate any gains realized from that project.
I think you're overplaying the ticks and mosquitos... nailed the driving and thick skin though.
There's definitely a lot to like around Salem and the North Shore! Reach out to Matt when you're ready to start planning your move!
There’s all ready way too many people in Salem
Salem isnt the best spot id say quincy
I heard Canada is like the best place to live on earth is this true? Free health care?
@@edcruz8820 it's definitely not the best but like anywhere in the world some places are better then others. yeah you're not going into dete if you have to go to the hospital, dental isn't free nor is some other forms of health care. and getting a prescription filled is crazy expensive. my brother has epilepsy and its almost $300 every two months, and that's with our health insurance.
don't get me wrong Canada is a nice place so long as your not there for to long. my cousin likes to compare Canada to New York, nice to visit not so nice to live there.
Hi Matt…Im hoping luckily most of these wont effect me…but thank you for your information…
Im an Aussie from Melbourne…so im used to spiders snakes etc but we dont have lyme carrying ticks so that will be a new one plus the ticks are little so harder to spot
I love winter and going to the snow, I’ve never experienced everyday life in winter though so that will be very different…When i was in Austria at minus 10 so 14 Fahrenheit I got headaches as my body just hadn’t experienced that temp before
All the accent and season stuff doesnt affect me…used to big cities, uni fluctuations, do you have the height of the bridge on the bridge so you know if you will fit under in the truck? thats what we have in oz makes it easy to know, ill have to keep an eye out in videos for it
Im hoping your not to offended at the thought of an aussie calling Massachusetts home 😊
Not offended at all. We love Aussies...actually feel like we have similar mentalities! Welcome to MASS!
Thanks so much for this video!! This was interesting to me as an Indiana native! Haha!
Stumbled upon this HIGH LARIOUS video because I'll be visiting (for the first time ever) next month (summah!) from Los Angeles. I am so excited! Also, not sure why, but very much interested in a big life change and considering moving there as well! The only thing(s) I'm getting the heebee jeebies about is the rough winters (again, Cali girl...I love my year round heat), but NOW TICKS?!!! LAWDY! Still, I think I can deal with those buggers than freezing my feathers off. What to do?! UGH!
Haha I absolutely love comments like this. The ticks can be bad, but the winters have definitely been getting more mild as the years go on...it's almost nice now when we get a nice snowday...indoors with hot chocolate. Definitely reach out to Matt BEFORE your visit and move.
@@livinginmassachusetts25 Will do, thank you! Staying indoors with hot chocolate sounds like a great time :)
It's lovely! If you can find a remote job in MA (there are plenty), snow really becomes less daunting and dare i say, enjoyable.
@@livinginmassachusetts25 I'm actually in healthcare (NOT a nurse or MD...more admin, but even still, I know there are TONS of options for me. I'm contemplating an office position with the Medical Examiner's office...so I'm just starting to do research. It'll just be my spinster self and two kitties. Looking for whatever will deem "affordable" in MA vs LA. I'm just ready for a change in scenery and "PAHK A CAH IN HAVAHD YAHD"
You're already a natural!
I'm from the uk london and me and my boyfriend were looking at the states that best suit us to move to. And we really love all the new England states. Its similar to home which is awesome but different enough to enjoy a different experience.
Hey Ms. Hourglass! I definitely could see that. I took a vacation over to the UK in 2019 and it felt like home away from home almost immediately. Definitely reach out to Matt directly and he can point you in the right direction to start your move. (978) 602-2816
Lol this should be called why not to move to Boston! Not Massachusetts. Springfield area here .. there is more to the state than Boston .. haha but good video.. lived in Boston for a few year.. job placement .. it’s a great city.. in Boston you put up 40 stories buildings every 5 months.. in Springfield we put one 15 story building every five years lol haha
Haha fair enough. We definitely have been focusing on the Boston area. We actually have people on our team from all over...the founders lived in Townsend for many years (not as far west as you though). Thanks for watching the videos!
@@livinginmassachusetts25 Yeah; another W. Mass. resident here. Maybe change the title to reflect that it's Boston-area only?
We probably won't change the name of our channel...but thanks for commenting. Keep watching!
Looking into places to move to in Massachusetts. Is Springfield as bad as some of the lists say?
I keep hearing really bad things on lists online but it seem that there is always someone from Springfield popping up and saying that it's actually a really nice place to live.
Some people really love Springfield and West Springfield. Economic development is definitely not as strong in that area. Reach out and we can help you learn more about some of these places!
Don't forget how you can be on one street and never know the name of it, because there are no signs telling you the name of the street that you are on. But all the cross streets are labeled. Argh!
We missed this comment...it is too true 🫣😂
Using blinkers is a sign of weakness!
Most white knuckle intersection in Massachusetts Kelly Square in Worcester
North Central Masshole here, I have a 50 yr love/hate with the state lol
Haha I definitely know that feeling! Thanks for watching our channel...massholes for life.
Hello , from Rancho Mirage California 🇺🇸
Woah, watching us from all the way out there. Thank you for watching us!
Lived in boston from 1986 to 1996. Right by the Arlington t. Never owned a car. Loved the classes I took. Was in an improv troupe. Work ed hard. But the winters were long and cold. Lots of snow. Also boston is a tad racist. Did not know this until I moved. Lived in California and New York city. My sister lives in Jamaica plain. My friend lives in Brookline. Boston has great architecture. Love the north end comm. Ave. And Newbury st.❤❤❤
Yes -- but more than just a "tad" racist. Very racist, especially in the suburbs.
You're moiré-ing! The stripes are making my eyes go funny
Haha is this a Schitts creek reference?
Im curious because you made the south comment. Are you from the South originally and moved to Mass? I'm from Atlanta and recently had to move in with family here in Cape Cod, Mass (more towards the west part of the Cape). Everything here is all new to me. Its definitely a big change, especially with the cold, long winters. Don't even get me started on the huge ants who seem to keep getting into our house which isn't dirty. 😩 Well on the bright side we do live 10 minutes down the street from a small beach so that's nice.
I moved from Houston to MA just 3 days ago, haven't figured out a city yet. Have you found that people are really as mean as they say? Im worried about that.
People definitely aren't as mean as they say! I personally love chatting with anyone I come across.
@@maximilian9295 and hey sorry that was so long, i originally didn't mean for it to be that long lol
Come join us. Let us know when you need help.
They don't call us Taxachusetts for nothing. Expensive living here.
its kind of funny hearing about ticks and approaches outside Scandinavia.
Thanks for the run downs, reminds me of my late beloved mom who worked in "Beantown" and dropped her "R"s, everything ending in a ended up with an 'er"! lol smdh
STORROW DRIVE @ 65 MPH...WHEN????? OH, YEAH @ 2:-3:00 AM, BUT THAT'S ABOUT IT!

Woof... absolutely right, those are brutal.

The accent originated with the Puritans who came to the area from East Anglia in the 17th century. People in East Anglia drop the r the end of words. The accent was also influenced by 19th and 20th century immigrants from Ireland.
