You nailed my look in 1967-69, my bff and I bonded on our first day of 7th grade in 1967, over our Cher haircuts. We went to concerts together constantly and our girlfriend group expanded and we are all still friends, saw The New York Dolls in summer, 1973, we had lots of fun. We painted those Twiggy under eye lash’s on, we loved Yardleys Jean Shrimpton makeup. Until we switched to no makeup in 1970, we did wear makeup when we went to clubs.
I grew up in LA, and my first boyfriend was a musician. We were both friends with Chad Smith’s daughter Ava Maybee (the guy who plays drums for the Red Hot Chili Peppers) and my boyfriend and Ava were in a band together. They got a gig playing at the Whisky, and I remember before the show we hung backstage in the green room and the entire wall of the green room was plastered with signatures and graffiti from the bands that had played there over the decades.
Yeah, I know who Chad is. I was actually able to see the whiskey when I took a tour while I was out in LA this past year. I never knew that the Sunset Strip was its own entity, so to speak. I stayed on Sunset Blvd, but the Sunset Strip is like a town in and of itself. You learn something new all the time. THE CRUE.
I was only at the Whisky once but it was for one of greatest bands ever. The Skatalites were the forefathers of Ska, Rock Stteady and Reggae. Considered Jamaica's greatest band even today. I found myself in the company of great musicians, who I would never get to see play again. Well done video really interesting
Makes me grateful I live in the L.A. area and I can easily go and see a show here. Going there in two weeks. I hope it never gets torn down. You feel the rock n roll spirit there for sure.
Amazing venue with such a great history. Imagine having the doors as your house band🔥. Whisky galore i love that film, so funny when they are trying to hide all the whisky from the police.🌟🙋♂️
I am British and during travelling a circuit of America In 1980 ( I have covered 32 states) saw The Whiskey which I had known about since its inception and superb bands to include 'The Doors'.
Really sux a gem of a channel like yours has cranked out 846 vids over four years & this is the first I've seen of your channel in suggestions. Wish RUclips's algorithms were better! What a nice vid Emma! Great info, thanks so much. Are you going to delve into the Haight/Ashbury scene in a future vid? What a treasure trove of wonderful bands, clubs/halls like Fillmore, Winterland, Cow Palace, etc you could explore. Appreciate you!
Thank you so much for your kind words, they mean so much! 💌 I like to switch around topics mostly focusing on fashion, music & the people of the time so I’ll make sure to add these to the list x I have made a video about the hippies and counterculture of the 60s where I talk a lot about Haight ashbury so maybe that’s something for you? ruclips.net/video/HRLPRMxFBw4/видео.htmlsi=L_uNhHL-XxuFsPoM
I went there in the late 80's during the hair band craze. Lots of rockers hanging at the bar being drunk and shameless. We were asked many times to come over but my friend and I were way too shy. 😊
Great job Emma, I love the way you put your thoughts and ideas into your work Along with the research you have done makes for an enjoyable video to watch…
Do you know how a search engine works? Because you can just type in “Whisky a Go-Go Footage” and it’ll show you just that. This is titled “The story of…” clearly implying that I’m talking about the history and everything that went into creating the mystique that is the whisky. If you’re rude just leave. You don’t have to be insulting because you don’t know how to search for what you’re looking for.
This was a very impressively researched topic on the founding and rise to prominence of the Whiskey. It was a very pivotal part of music history. At some point in the late 70s, my wife and I went there one Saturday night. The place and area were getting pretty seedy by then, but it was a place I'd heard about and always wanted to see. I think we saw an early rendition of the Go-Go's there but they were called thee Misfits at the time. Honestly, they weren't very good at the time. They didn't seem to be able to play their instruments and there was a heavy negative reaction in the audience. IMOHO - I like the top unbuttoned.
Went there a few times in the mid '70's when I was on a vacation and the Runaways were starting out. Heard a few tunes for their first lp in the studio they were recording in. Hung out with Kim Fowley , etc. Nice synopsis! TY...
Thank you for this. Special thanks for going into detail about Johnny Rivers-he usually gets glossed over when the Whisky is discussed. BTW: I will be on the bill on Saturday January 11 2025 (performing under the name Katdaddy55) 😅 The Whisky has a lot of history. That's why I made the effort to play on that stage.
@scottdavidson526 AND: there are 30 prepaid tickets at box office. 😀😃 If you're in the area, stop in and see my show. Its free for the 1st 30 people 😀😃 I am on at 6 or 6:30 (can't remember just now) !
try to get hold of a book called "turn the beat around" by peter shapiro ... it goes into the parisian scene quite a bit at the beginning ... i do know that the paris whisky a go-go was started in 1947 and installed it's dance floor in 1953 ... it was decorated with whisky crates and was a very small venue inside initially
I've been to the Whiskey so many times I couldn't give a number. Probably close to a hundred times. The first time I went to a show there I was 13 or 14 years old and went with my older sister and her boyfriend that would be 1978 or '79 and we went to see a new band that was getting popular in L.A. called Oingo Boingo or it might have been DEVO I don't remember which I saw first. Then Wendy O and The Plazmatics, and so many other bands, and friend's bands, and working as a drum tech for my buddy. I was just at a show there last year. My friends and I and our girlfriends would go from club to club and bar to bar walking the strip with hundreds of other people doing the same thing. Everyone all dressed up in their costumes and makeup, in the mid '80s the Glam Spandex big hair and makeup thing was happening for the dudes in bands. That wasn't my thing. I was the long hair rocker punk rocker with the leather jacket with custom airbrush art painted on the back and sleeves, jeans and black Dr Martens boots or black suede Chuck Taylor's. I still go to the Rainbow for a couple of beers and some pizza and say hi to Christy the bartemptress who's been working their over 20 years now. I've been going to that place since I was about 10 years old.
The Whiskey still exists more than 60 yrs after it opened several notable movie scenes/music videos have been filmed there ex Motley Crue Girls, Girls, Girls
Oh, wow, most videos with a title like this one has, are now almost all narrated by AI voices( the transvestism of speech). Props for keeping it real🤜💥🤛

Thanks for the feedback. I like to sometimes repeat things to empathize on certain aspects of the video and I like to round my writing out with a summary but it’s good to hear some opinions on that. Happy you enjoyed the video either way x

Always been a dream to go there. Hopefully I can one day. lol
Motley Crue started out there.
Better hope it doesn't burn down. The Sunset fire is right near it.
Stay safe! So sorry for what's going on now!
How crazy!! It's sad.
Interesting documentary, excellent script. You remind me of Goldie Hawn but brunette!
I really liked this. Good Job. :)
Thank you so much dear!
First time viewer. I enjoyed learning more than I knew about this club. Great job! Thanks!

Lovely Cher vibe. I was a teenager in the late 60s early 70s. My hair was too curly to pull it off! Great job capturing the times.

Hi thanks for the video.
Back in the late '70s I would go to The Whiskey with my then boyfriend; I was 16 and had never been to a real club before. Very cool.
"ME ME ME ME ME ME ME"!! Shuddup and show footage of The Whiskey!!!

I’ve seen many shows at the Whisky in Hollywood!!!
Great memories!!
This reminded me of the LIMELIGHT (BUCKHEAD) ALANTA
Those where great times go go
Yeah, so many memories, so many bands, so long ago.

Love your hair sweety❤❤😊 can you talk about the hotel leonard cohen stayed on
Thank you dear! Oh that’s such a good idea, I’ll add it to the list 💌
Just discovered your channel. And so far I’m liking it. I would’ve liked to known what happened to the original female DJ.
Thanks! I tried finding out what happens to her after she left the whisky but I didn’t find anything. I just hope she had & has a good life 💌
I m going this summer, hoping for a Doors 60th something in La.
I did see The Doors live.. I don’t think Jim wanted to be filmed( lsle of Wight 1970) so they played in the dark. Very atmospheric though😀
Peanut Butter Conspiracy played backup to the Doors at the Whiskey. Another great band.
Rock on, Child 👍
Kate Hudson's mom, Goldie Hawn was a Go-Go dancer at the Whisky.
Please tell about the Grande Ballroom in Detroit
Great video emma 👏
Thank you so much dear 💌

i saw arthur lee play there
That’s cool. Love, The Doors, Jefferson Airplane. That’s when The Whiskey really rocked
Lucky you!!🙂
8:32 The members of the Doors did not have beards and mustaches when they played at the Whiskey a Go Go.
The Sunset fire could possibly threaten this place. The new one in the Hills.
Hey, where's Cynthia Plaster Caster???
Cousin of mine tends bar there presently

I saw Suzy and the Banashe's there.
Who is Suzy and the Banashe's?
@@brob9995 She means Siouxsie And The Banshees. If you haven't heard of them, you're not missing anything.
What an absolute dream gig! ⭐️
@@SunDemon-h9qSpellbound & the cover of Dear Prudence are pretty good if you're into goth music, though.
@@SunDemon-h9q I knew i has misspelled it, but I can't be expected to remember such a weird way to spell Suzy.

There's no E in Whisky A Go Go😮
What a bore. Spelling corrector….🥱
@Fleezil2860 just saying the opening title is incorrectly spelled. Looks lame.✌️
@ You might want to check opening title again. The misspelling is from a comment. Just saying,
@Fleezil2860 wrong. There are 2 different titles. 2nd is incorrect
@ correcting again?😂 got anything better to do with your time?😂 guess not. For your pleasure, I purposely made a few mistakes in this comment. so now you can have a fulfilling evening…. You’re welcome.

What's up with that hair cut?
It’s “burgeoning” not “budgening”. There is no “d” but there is an “r”.

I went there in 1995,very disappointing,nothing special..
