What a great ballet. The humor in it is priceless. I've been listening to this music for years and I think it could easily be retitled to anything having to do with the Old West, except maybe for the Shaker song, which comes out of the Midwest, of course. This is so "American" in every respect. Copland was truly our first composer who really got the sense of what the American sound is, at least that's what it seems like to me. Those open chords convey the bigness of our country. Amazing how a guy from Brooklyn could create such an expressionist American music.
Amazing, simply amazing! Thank you so much for sharing this treasure. I had no idea that Martha Graham's dance company was multi racial. What a pleasure to see especially during that time in our nation's history.
Taken to see Martha and Company when I was maybe 24 and reasonably cultured (by Bronx standards)but unaware of this electrifying genius who made me wonder “How long has this been going on?” Once saw the manuscript of “Appalachian Spring,” and at the top of the page Copeland had written “Ballet for Martha,” She took it from there!
Luis Zárate The explanation is that Martha Graham was a genius who was ahead of her time, and modern pop culture is completely bankrupt and plagiaristic.
This piece has some wicked timing to memorize. You're on your own, no helpers in the section to cue off of. But there's not much more timing you have to memorize than the sequences from 4:32 to 6:45
the four women dancing at 0:42 remind me of the little oysters that were eaten in Alice And Wonderland (Old version) :D:D Still an amazing choreography :)
so, this performance was filmed in 1959.
Martha Graham played the BRIDE. she was 65 here.

The brilliant Martha! Love the minimal sets.
His augmented seventh chords are legendary, and the sweetest!

Brings back fond marching band memories, thanks for the upload.
Brilliant!
It is an early example coming of ballet pioneered to a more modern dance.
Beautiful
Did someone say this was performed in 1959? That would make Martha 65 yo.
Wow, all I can think of ( June 2017) is the movie Handmaid's Tail on Hulu.

Yep - we played this in orchestra when I was in grad school, and that section was the bane of our existence for several months.

Small orchestra. Hm.
I like the symphonic size better. I'm use to the greater depth it imparts to this great work.
This is the way it was originally scored, for a 13 piece chamber orchestra.Copland later, in 1954, scored it for a full orchestra.

That's because he knew what I wanted.
