The sheer beauty and brilliance of this apocalyptic masterpiece is staggering. Duran Duran have created a haunting yet comforting way for us to confront and accept the end of our own solar system and our transition into oblivion. The crossing between song and the angelic chorus never fails to give me chills. Congratulations Duran Duran for creating one of the greatest pieces of art in the history of the human race.
I was actually listening to the Paper Gods album last night, and I have to say - I believe "Universe Alone" ranks right up there with some of the finest stuff they've ever done. The melody and mood are gorgeous and ominous, and I actually think the synthetic sounding drums work well on this track, because they serve as a metaphor for the cold indifference of the universe. They feel like a cold, steel heart. And the explosion of distortion at the end, followed by desolate chanting, gives me chills! Just breathtaking stuff. On the album proper, the other standouts are "Butterfly Girl" and "Face for Today," with "What Are the Chances" also being way up there. There are lots of good cuts though, and I give them credit for pushing in new directions while still being who they are. A really good album.
You've said virtually everything that there is to say about this classic album, and you name most of the immediate stand-outs; I'd add 'Change The Skyline' and 'Last Night In The City' too.
@@glennpagemusic Thanks for asking. Yes I love it. For me I have my 3 Duran career-best masterpieces already (albums from years 1986, 2007 and 2011 respectively) though the results are different for everyone, but every Duran album ever made I own (their weakest are few and still listenable) which I pinpoint as exceptional quality of this band, and the list would even bigger if we had a clearer picture of just how many unreleased tracks/demos and B-sides are out there. To answer this question: I find it another 5 star piece (though I rate personally 5 stars in divisions of 3; the highest being the career best = 20/10, the 2nd best lot =15/10 and the 3rd best are the more usual 10/10, anything lower will still be highly rated being 4.5 stars out of 5 or 4 out of 5. So I reckon I'm familiar with it now to pop it in the 2nd best 5 star category, which is where I already have "Rio" (yes I know, people, deal, it's not the best, it's great but then so are many) and, wait for it, "Liberty", but then I already have another 'much loathed one' (oh silly fake fans, don't you just LOVE them-not) as a career-best at the top. So I believe "Future Past" is above "Paper Gods" but only one rung ahead on the ladder, as over the years I now reckon "Paper Gods" is even better than I thought as the slower ones to get into are now doing so for me. In fact, I find present releases by people often have a way of doing that. I love the fact "FP" has loads of singles already issued, and an utter 1st for Duran in 2 ways: the first time they've not only released ALL singles ahead of parent album release, but that it's the most they EVER taken off, even at the height of the "Rio" success and when there was an actual singles market for it! As ever DD impress me and remain my all time fav all-male group that even the next coolest can't beat. How about yourself? How do you rate "Future Past" alongside all their other works?

+Anthony Nichols I think there is a lot more critical approval of DD now. The critics now grew up listening to their era and appreciate them for the 'massive slice of pop Gold and entertainment their Glory Days yielded'. I think this is the best album by a fair stretch since the early 80s. I say that as it has more 'full points to the track' ranked songs - in my opinion. In particular Butterfly Girl, What are the Chances, and Face for Today = which all sit on ANY album DD have done as equals. The others so far are too new to my ears but Paper Gods is superb as is Pressure Off. This is 'a return to Greatness' for me on this album. I think it has the great songs and 'Le Bon' tones/intonations/harmonies we EXPECT from DD. Its not doubt hard to be at the best you can be on every album however this is a glimpse of the Greatness DD can give. Great album. Great songs. Great.
+Greg Ingram Thanks for reply . They are truly a great band. The only bug I have wth the band is the fact they never capitilise on their work. when at their most creative they stop. I know the money is in the touring these days .. they should go back to the studio and bang another album out 14th studio album. yes but continuity no. Just a really selfish fan the more I hear the more I want ... Get in the studio anther album then a tour please.
Anthony Nichols good points. I think they used to have the idea that by working with different produces helped them achieve a variety of creative sounds on every album. this would be according to them to not repeat the sound of every album. however this collaboration with Hudson/ronson as key producers and of course john frusciante is a winning formulae. I think frusciante knows the sound DD want and he contributes perfectly. their existing session guitar player I simply don't like.
+Greg Ingram I think personally Dom brown has done a good solid job. It's obvious the the part he plays with in the band. I believe some/all of the tracks were laid down at his studio I think??(please correct me if wrong) I know what you mean tho he does not command a presence like Warren and deff not andy. Would be awsome if JF was to become an official member. Could you imagine that the critics Would be tied in knots.
JF full time is only fairytale. I don't think he would want attached to any band fully. but I think he might well do more guest stuff. I don't like DB at all. I just don't like his contribution. Yes he lacks presence but I don't see it as weakness just more of an indication he is a session player being told what to contribute. WC much as he was over the top is a first class guitarist. Pedigree. But generally AT played on the best DD tracks over all and more consistently. that said DD can pick JF or who ever they wish now. But critics are more in favour with DD as they recognise in hindsight they were a big part of musical history and have lasting popular music tracks with depth, bite and appeal to a lot of people. A great track is a great track and DD have many of these. Critics do love them more now than the 80s but those critics were products of the 60s amd 70s rock and thought anything with a synth was pish and make up was girls. they weren't really taking note and appreciating the quality of the DD output. Judged for the majority of fans (girls) who loved them essentially. Yet, interestingly, the amount of guitar players, who play in bands, who know how to play, cover a lot of DD stuff. that is Interesting and says quite a lot about what they 'hear' and not what they 'see'. Anyway, I don't need personally need critics who slag off DD for the sake of it. I know how good they are. I know they are A class. Period.
@@robbelliii Agree. This album is terrible. The melodies make no sense. They used to be able to teeter that thin line, and we fans still eat up the awkwardness, but this one goes too far. This song in particular is not that bad, but many songs on this are unlistenable, a disaster. I think with Liberty it was just wrong timing, people were done with them, and then for the next Wedding Album, they struck gold with Warren Cuccurullo. I am glad that people like it though, it's got many favorable comments here.
probably one of the best song in the album. in my opinion they reach some new points they never touched before. great vocals, epic and great frusciante that moves his guitar in the shadow as a young robert fripp
Dentro de 100 millones de años está canción llegará a un planeta de una galaxia distante y sus habitantes sabrán que en la Tierra existió un grupo genial
This is by far one of the best songs Simon has written & the band performed on... Listening to it again after a few years break it still hits you firmly right into your very soul... Some say the track was inspired by Lars Von Trier's " Melanchloia " film & you can see the connection but that's the wonderful thing about a well written song as you can sometimes use it as a backdrop to other concepts/ideas & feelings... Simon is at his best when writing & singing these types of songs as his Harmonies are hauntingly beautiful like no other... I'll admit that when I first heard the song & listened to the lyrics, to me anyway, it would've made a great James Bond song... Add in John Barrys Horn Section & Nick adding his orchestral Bond synth string input & it would've stood on it's on as a Bond Song or whatever Simon chose to right the lyrics about... I'm not paying lip service hear when I say I think Simon is more of a Poet than an outright song writer in the same way as Jim Morrison... Not many of these artists come along that often so enjoy them while they're with us... Duran Durans strength is in the fact they can write & performs songs that'll fill the dance floor or write hauntingly beautiful songs that speak of lose or the uncertainty of what the future holds & again not many solo acts, never mind band's, can do this time & time again... Im sure the rest of the lads will have added they're lyrical content to Simon's songs over the years also & it's this collaboration that has seen them still go strong today... What irks me is this " Duran Duran Are Back " anytime there's an album out, when in fact they've never went anyway as they've always been there in one form or another... Again not many pay homage to the fact they've been going since they first formed all those years ago yet The Rolling Stones are always applauded for still going strong & I'm a huge Rolling Stones & Duran Duran fan... I think the lads from Duran Duran as have the fans have grown up & become secure in the knowledge that " we know " & that's all that matters... Enjoy...
@@TheChadTI What's it like 2 year's in the future! lol As I hope we are still not having to wear these face masks... I'm not a looker by any means but all these various makes of face masks cause ongoing facial allergies for me & many other's & thought his is nowhere near as serious as those recovering from the coronavirus or who have sadly passed away because of this coronavirus they are still a pain... I hate having to wear them but in my country it's still legally mandatory & it doesn't look like changing anytime soon... Im a huge music lover of so many genres through out the ages & i was thankfully brought up in a household were there were so many different genres of music being played & listened to & I've always been thankful for having being raised in an environment that encouraged us to listen to whatever music we liked & this was even if other's in our family didn't really take to what each other was listening to, as its each to their own... I'd like to say If you haven't seen Duran Duran Live then when they (hopegully) go on Tour again I suggest you go & see them as they are the real deal & are brilliant live but I know that at times bands can only reach certain countries & cities , as the Music Industry isn't the giant business it used to be with so many solo act's & band's all over the world that you couldn't see them all daily within 1 year, as thats how big it used to be & I had to , & at times I had to choose who I was going to see Live on any given night as my other favourite solo acts or band's were touring at the same time... The simple fact is at somepoint through age & also cost reasons it might not be in their best interests to go on Tours anymore, but I hope this is not the case for quite some time... Of course they (like most solo acts & bands) mostly Tour when they've released a New Studio Album but who knows when & if another one is recorded!.. If they are playing any places near you like in Festivals I highly recommend you go & see them Live & even if you have seen them Live you can't beat going to see & hear them live again... Ps I booked my tickets for last October 2020 (11 months in advance) for my tickets to go & see Level 42 play Live & though they haven't released a new album for quite some time they always still go on tour as they have a huge back catalogue of hits they can play Live & this is the case with Duran Duran but the latter usually only Tour when they've released a New album were as Level 42 are usually always touring just like they did in their youth... This Tour was to celebrate Level 42 40th Anniversary , with the tour being a play on words from the old classic Oscar Wnning movie " From Here To Eternity " & Level 42 cleverly marketed it as the " From Eternity To Hear " Tour but unfortunately it was cancelled due to the ongoing coronavirus... Within a short period of this cancellation It was rescheduled to go ahead this October 2021 but I'm not 100% sure if it will go ahead & like a normal gig! As they might have to distance us but since it's in a seated event that might mean canceling a certain amount of seats so they can keep us within the legal distancing laws & that might cause some fan's to lose out in going to see them but here's hoping the Tour goes ahead & everyone who has paid for their ticket(s) or hopes to pick one up on that night is allowed in as normal... The reason I add this as there are not many great solo acts & bands from (before or after) Duran Duran & Level 42 who are still touring & I'd (again) ask you to go & see Level 42 live if possible! Even if you aren't that much of a fan of Level 42 you should think.of going to see them as they are an amazing band Live & unfortunately one day bands like Duran Duran & Level 42 might not Tour ever again & you don't want to one day say " If Only " As I've known many friends who thought that all the solo acts & bands & music was going to go on forever & they'd see their favourites the next time but many of them break up or are forced to stop as there's no future in the Music Industry like there used to be & although we do still have them there they are nowhere near the volume of ongoing constant solo acts & bands that came out decades ago... Of course we have Music Festivals will a diverse range of genres & styles playing at them which is great but I still feel sorry for today's generation as even though there are solo acts & bands it comes back to it unfortunately being nothing like & nowhere near the volume of solo acts & bands as there used to be but as long as music old or new is still with us then it will at least keep music alive in some shape or form... Anyway without rabbiting on I wish you all the best & in light of this still ongoing coronavirus stay safe & healthy wherever (or whenever lol) you are in this world... Slainte... .....
Some people have complained that Simon's lyrics have lost their poetry...I beg to differ. This clearly shows he has refined and brought it to an even higher level. I recently lost a family member and this song brings me to tears. Is this the end of the world? Is it a soul leaving the earth floating into space? Is it thoughts before one's soul becomes reborn? This is truly haunting and mind expanding. Beautiful!
To me, so far, this is the most classic sounding Duran track off the new album. Has that melancholy feel that you'd hear on the first album and perhaps third album. Guitars and electric drums are also classic D2. At the same time it has such a Bond movie feel; could be a soundtrack song for the new movie or the b side for View to a Kill. It also does a nice job of featuring Simon's range. To me, his voice has never sounded better than today. Amazing, because many lose their range as they get older. He clearly does exercises...amazing.
Thanks guys. This reminds me of my mom, who passed away in May of this year. We both shared the belief that we'll meet again in Heaven. This song is beautiful!!!!
This track is preposterously epic.... I love Duran last tracks.... But they have surpassed everything ever here with this apocalyptic obituary of a track ... Simon lyrics are smack on here! This album is better than wedding album and aynin and I don't say that lightly!
Reminds me of Maiden, epic album enders. The Chauffeur started the trend and it works out more often that not. I'm too biased though as DD is up there for me as far as favorite bands.
I can't listen this often because I'm always crying when I hear this. It's like pure rage about loss. I'm not in pain I'm in rage. this is literally what he said to me before he has died see u in the other lifetime and we'll be together I'm so sad to leave u alone. I just don't want my parents to bury their own child. I know now that this is the worst that could happen. He is always said that I'm always survive no matter what I am so full of life. I did. I survived. But it doesn't make me happy. I would rather died with him in his arms.
Hands down best track on the album. Art, my friends, art. Just love how they mixed synth strings with real quartet parts....sucker for the bit crunch and percussion modulation at the end.
sends a shiver down my spine. I feel the boys are saying goodbye with this tune. Dunno what i'm going to do when they're gone. They've been the soundtrack to my life. This, My Antarctica & Sin Of The City are embedded in my soul... Oh, and Matter Of Feeling, Liberty, Land, the list goes on & on....
This is my favourite track so far - it's an epic end to a brilliant album .... Duran still amaze me with what they can come up with! I can't think of any other band doing that from their era!
I see you in another lifetime!! This song and music makes me reflects in our vulnerability , today more than ever. Is bittersweet , because i believe in the afterlife like the Egyptians, and if we had mistreat this planet of ours we also have created amazing things like music , arts and temples. Love to DD.
Gorgeous song, lyrics, Simon Le Bon's beautiful voice. Music, wow Duran Duran is so amazing. Thank you for making life a bit easier for me, your music takes me to a different place in life. xx
I came to this album. My first Duran Duran, anything; for John Frusciante ( solo albums John, pre electronic John, in-between the band John). I discovered Duran Duran. The whole album is stunning. This song is my go to song, but it's all great. This was, I think, the last time John frusciante put pick to guitar and something inspiring came out, to date. This song is inspiring.
I actually think it's very brave what they're doing musically. It may seem like they're selling out, but I think this is actually riskier than just trying to do Rio 2 or 3. This takes balls, trying to keep up with modern sounds while retaining your core.
The final distorted part reminds of the Melancholia movie final when there's the big crash with the planet. And I am so profoundly deep in this matter that the thought of leaving it is fearful. So it's a good reminder to work hard on not letting my Consciousness fade away, to constantly remember this is only one life but there are many others out there to be lived, and to fully enjoy what this particular kind of experience is giving me (for example the big goosebumps this song makes me feel)... at some point we won't even remember we have been Humans, this is somehow melancholic but I suppose it's because I don't remember what's after the death of this body and before the rebirth of another body.
My Dear Dear Duran Duran. You've got no idea how much your music has brought me pleasure when I'm down,. Given me such comfort at bad times. My three love have always been My Jim, my last v of Space Travel and last but not least DURAN DURAN! My Jim, who I've lived with and loved for 22 years passed away on a very memorable day and I think it was his way of saying "Hey Baybee, I'm sorry my times up so soon but I'm up here keeping an eye on you". So July 21st, 2019 was a very emotional day for me to say the least. But I took such comfort in Ordinary World and The Universe Alone! Thanks DD!!!
Let me tell you about a sunrise across the ocean when in the deepest depths of depression. This. One day it's 10 years later and sisters, brothers you have made it to say it

I believe some/all of the tracks were laid down at his studio I think??(please correct me if wrong)
I know what you mean tho he does not command a presence like Warren and deff not andy.
Period.
The more songs they release the more it is apparent that this is one of the best records of their career.
Agreed
I doubt it. It makes Liberty look amazing.
Nintendo Psycho I think Liberty is underrated. But you are high if you really believe this the album is amazing
I actually have to eat my words, because I like many songs on the album now.
probably one of the best song in the album. in my opinion they reach some new points they never touched before. great vocals, epic and great frusciante that moves his guitar in the shadow as a young robert fripp
Such a beautiful song
Dentro de 100 millones de años está canción llegará a un planeta de una galaxia distante y sus habitantes sabrán que en la Tierra existió un grupo genial
This song made me cry first time i ever heard it. And guys don't cry...
Go Belmont!
Same here
i cried i dont anymore
The entire album made me cry. WHY WHY???? WHere is the band???
I LOVE Duran Duran and This track is especially haunting, and Simons voice puts me in another UNIVERSE!
To call this song "epic" is an understatement! It's glorious!
Johnny and his lovely guitar 🎸 sound!!!
easy to recognize!!!
we love you John Frusciante!!!
3:36 oh john chill all over my spine...
bless you
Oh man, they really went for it on the end of this song.
Enjoy...
I'm from 2 years in the future and I liked your post!
@@TheChadTI
What's it like 2 year's in the future! lol
As I hope we are still not having to wear these face masks...
Ps
I booked my tickets for last October 2020 (11 months in advance) for my tickets to go & see Level 42 play Live & though they haven't released a new album for quite some time they always still go on tour as they have a huge back catalogue of hits they can play Live & this is the case with Duran Duran but the latter usually only Tour when they've released a New album were as Level 42 are usually always touring just like they did in their youth...
Even if you aren't that much of a fan of Level 42 you should think.of going to see them as they are an amazing band Live & unfortunately one day bands like Duran Duran & Level 42 might not Tour ever again & you don't want to one day say " If Only "
As I've known many friends who thought that all the solo acts & bands & music was going to go on forever & they'd see their favourites the next time but many of them break up or are forced to stop as there's no future in the Music Industry like there used to be & although we do still have them there they are nowhere near the volume of ongoing constant solo acts & bands that came out decades ago...
Beautiful!
+citoyennedmonde
Oh yes: "It's beautiful, the dying Sun" makes you think. Epic
svartkatt Well put. Sorry about your mum.
Classic Duran Duran.... this is the one...
Fantastic!!!! I sincerely hope that they're not saying goodbye with this track...
Love at first listen. First time since Ordinary World
To me, so far, this is the most classic sounding Duran track off the new album.
This was in my dream 24 hour before my dad passed it was the hospital calling me and this song was in the background
My Speakers melted down at the end....
COMPLETELY OBSESSED with this song and the entire album!!! By far their best yet!!
One of my favourite Duran Duran tracks from one of their best albums.
This album is better than wedding album and aynin and I don't say that lightly!
have you heard the b-sides ??
Epic is the word!!!
Intro has a nursery rhyme feel...then cinematic, as in film score..or some classy ad campaign. Soaringly beautiful.
Hands down best track on the album. Art, my friends, art. Just love how they mixed synth strings with real quartet parts....sucker for the bit crunch and percussion modulation at the end.
I agree
LOVE and adore the distortion outro.
I think this may be one of my favourite songs ever. Full blast. Amazing.
I lost a friend today so I'll be playing this song until i have no more tears to cry.
I hope songs like this or like Only in Dreams appear on Future Past. Two brilliant tracks on Paper Gods. 🌈
sends a shiver down my spine.
Same here
They and depeche mode are like twin brothers .
Arcana7609 theres nothing quite like Simon's voice
Anche a me piacciono le stesse canzoni malgrado siano quelle meno suonate nei concerti e meno passate alla radio
for me, it simple-duran duran are and it will be forever my inspiration in life
blown the fu#k away by this song it has to get heard by the masses, quite simply perfect.
Wow, how to end an album. This song gets in your head and refuses to leave. Just when I thought they could not get any better.........they do.
Beautiful song.I listen to it almost every day. Never old. Never tiresome.
My heart just sang out loud
Today marks the one year anniversary of my fathers death. This song hits a nerve. That choir of angels at the end always gets me.
Masterpiece
Hauntingly beautiful!
this Track is so ingenious. you can listen to it on a continuous loop and it never gets boring. Typical DURAN DURAN.
This is my favourite track so far - it's an epic end to a brilliant album .... Duran still amaze me with what they can come up with! I can't think of any other band doing that from their era!
John Frusciante fantastic on The guitar!
They always have a track that gets glued forever in my head. This is that track!!!! And that's why i love this band since their firts record!!
A masterpiece Duran Duran
"All you need is now" and "Paper Gods" are amazing albums. Hope the next one follows the same line.
Still getting chills listening to this, epic 💎
What atmosphere , I am fascinated
Today's music is nothing compared to the great music that duran Duran did from the eighties to this decade.
This has got to be one of there best tracks, the boys are back!
I see you in another lifetime!! This song and music makes me reflects in our vulnerability , today more than ever. Is bittersweet , because i believe in the afterlife like the Egyptians, and if we had mistreat this planet of ours we also have created amazing things like music , arts and temples. Love to DD.
Lush. Gorgeous. Mysterious. The best thing they have done since "The Chauffeur"
I love Duran Duran. They are notorious.
I love this song
Awesomely excellent, subtle, guitar riff! Melody Gods
Gorgeous song, lyrics, Simon Le Bon's beautiful voice. Music, wow Duran Duran is so amazing. Thank you for making life a bit easier for me, your music takes me to a different place in life. xx
This song brought tears to my eyes on first listen....its stuff like this that makes me think ... how the hell do they do it 40 years in?
love this song, cd is really great. Duran Duran is back! :)
This song is inspiring.
i like the nick rhodes pads... and the final bit crush at the end
A masterpiece I learnt to appreciate after many plays
Great ❤❤❤
Duran Duran ancora in gioco dopo piu' di 30 anni...siete proprio fantastici!!!
Being able to hear this song played live, I truly love this song, and I know that I will sing with Simon on the other side!
So excited to get the CD. Been hearing great things about this track in particular!
I actually think it's very brave what they're doing musically. It may seem like they're selling out, but I think this is actually riskier than just trying to do Rio 2 or 3. This takes balls, trying to keep up with modern sounds while retaining your core.
+glennpagemusic agree entirely and I think they have pulled it off !
+glennpagemusic id love to hear all of these songs with Roger on a REAL drum kit.
It is the swan song for Duran Duran.
A goodbye to all of us.
All things come to an end.
Thank you DD , "... how beautiful the closing down ..." .
+Giannis Giannopoulos I hope not. but the way things are looking in the world today, it might be a nod towards the coming war :-(
+Giannis Giannopoulos Oh no, i don't agree. I believe and hope DD can give us other wonderful songs!
silly boy. This is only the beginning.
Beautiful and sad at the same time. I love Duran Duran music and cant wait for the next album.
Great track. DD, Icon of 80's at their best here. Epic lyrics.
The best soundtrack for the world's end.
Great news! Paper gods # 05 in UK, # 02 ARGENTINA, #04 Netherlands, #10 Brasil, # 02 Italy and TOP 10 USA !!
+Luis Araujo I'm so glad, i was afraid that in my country, Italy, it would be neglected...
I just can't stop playing it....i now play it at the end of my Dj set. Fantastic tune!!!
brillante una canción madura llena de emoción como ellos saben hacerlo porque son grandes !! Gracias Duran Duran !!!
I have been a fan of DD for 35yrs.
love the "death" at the end.
Actually a really nice tune, full of atmosphere. Love that guitar sound doing its thang subtly in the back ground.
Beautiful. And as good as pop music gets.
I can now say this is the best song DD has ever recorded.
I am very close to this statement too.
THE SEVENTH STRANGER
It's one of the best songs they've ever made in 35 years of music. It reminds me of Lady Xanax and Finest Hour.
Carl Gibbons: Since 1998....
Kevan.....what song is better from 1998? I certainly don't like Ordinary World or Come Undone better. Maybe Reach Up For The Sunrise....
And again...the bass is divine!
Awesome song, so touching. The whole album sounds really really good, I love it ♥
My Dear Dear Duran Duran.
This. One day it's 10 years later and sisters, brothers you have made it to say it
the death at the end is just brilliant.
i agree its a great ending to a song ! Duran do it again with epic song :)
i agree its a great ending to a song ! Duran do it again with epic song :)
