  • New uploads Monday,Wednesday, and Saturday! Smurrf, the Mustang GT I've had since the beginning has been an amazing car to me other than minor hiccups due to me modifying the car more and more. Even with the procharger it's still managed to hit 101,000 miles on stock everything. Well, the time has finally come to have a VERY annoying problem as you see me troubleshoot it one step at a time. Thanks for watching!

      So with these fords, if its the same way as my mothers car, the lights are hooked up in tandem not separate. So when one light goes out, the other one does as well. That could be the issue?

    David, please dont listen to people suggesting to put a 20 amp fuse in. You run the risk of melting your wiring, or your car catching on fire.

  • @jamievandalen

    while lights are on, open the hood, and jostle the wires that you suspect were the issue. If they were, the lights should go out and it should be semi- repeatable.

I bought Holly though and have been driving her for 3ish weeks. Working on her adding stuff. I went to start up Wendy just to give her a start maybe drive her to work today. Battery is completely dead. I had been starting her once a week for 15 minutes at a time and now she just wont start. Cars care when you bring in other cars...Wonder how Holly feels when I bring a terminator home..... :O

    The S197 is pretty solid electrically. Most of the issues I've seen are wiring being melted by mods. Check any wiring going near exhaust or any of the other hot bits. I'd also try a multimeter to check for current (not voltage). Take one of the blown fuses and cut it in half. Solder leads on the contacts fuses have on the top to test. Or you can use something like the ESI 303B fuse Buddy which is basically the same thing premade. Hook up red to one side and black to the other. I'd recommend and DMM that can do at least 20 amps of current. Many can't and they do have fuses themselves so be sure the DMM can handle the current since at this point it becomes the fuse. Step one is unplug all the lights and turn the switch off. Test draw here. If there is a current draw your short is before the light switch. If not step 2. Keep all the lights unplugged but turn on the switch. At this point your power draw should be minimal still (in the milliamps range if anything at all). If you're blowing fuses the short has to be a few amps minimum. If you're still good at this point then power up the car with the lights unplugged. Let it warm up and make sure you're still good. Next I'd try the brake (still all lights unplugged) to make sure it's not a short on the brake lights (I'm betting this is where it will be). Then I'd start adding lights in one by one. While keeping the car running/warmed up. Wait about 5 minutes in between each light and monitor any climbing in current draw. Keep in mind that once you plug in the lights the current will start going up. You can compare power draw by comparing left to right just to get an idea how much each light draws.
    Once you find out where the current draw spikes it gets a bit trickier. Basically you have to segregate the individual runs. Unplug the battery and just test for resistance between the negative and positive on individual points in the harness with nothing attached (no bulbs or batteries). I haven't had a reason to look at my wiring too closely so I can't help you much at finding out where it splits there. I'm guessing if you follow the brake switch and pull the headlamp switch you can separate them pretty quickly. If you pull the headlight switch off with the car battery disconnected you can short individual pins on the light connectors to ground and test for continuity on the light switch.

      Charles has apparently gotten a short somewhere in his car where it immediately blows the fuse for that circuit, pulled the entire body harness and fully tested every component and found no issues. just to be defeated in the end once power is put to that circuit

      It's a pretty common issue for a lot of cars to have trunk/liftgate wires break due to the amount of movement they go through over their lifetime. It fatigues the wires and they end up breaking internally. It wouldn't be a bad idea to change that trunk wiring harness.

    Hi dude love your videos. I am an auto electrician by trade the way I test for shorts is you take your standard h4 blub for a head lamp and put some wires on it just two is fine. Next remove the fuse which you suspect has the short and insert those wires in the fuse( one wire to one terminal and the other wire to the other terminal)* VERY IMPRORTANT don't let the wires bridge the fuse you want the headlamp to act as a fuse* now turn your lights on the blud should glow faintly. If the bulb comes in bright and blinds you then you have a short. Moving along the harness plug each point along the harness till the light goes dim when it does that section you unpluged is the section of the harness with the fault. You can also leave the headlamp in and take the vehicle for a drive to see that the short has been fixed. Cheers from Zimbabwe man have a good one if you are a bit confused don't hesitate to ask.

    Hey dude! Huge fan of your channel, I am an electrical engineer and Ive had this problem in a Volvo XC60 in the past, the best way to find it is using a multimeter to spot the spike in current, there has to te a cable thats shorting out ( the one you found could be the culprit) or just a defective contact in the headlights. In my case it was a defective contact in one of the taillights. You should test each connector for spikes in current and never increase the amperage of your fuses high current is no joke. Best of luck!

    David. The corner markers are on the same circuit. If the front bumper has been off multiple times I would check the wires for the front corner markers also. Definitely a power short to ground and it seemed to happen when you are turning. Maybe a tire rubbing the inner finder and pinched the wires for the front markers..

    I'm a certified Ford tech let me look at it! Would fr if you were close. But I can get you any wiring diagrams you need and try to help you myself if that would help any? First need to figure out everything that runs on that circuit that gets power from that fuse so you can narrow it down. Also a circuit breaker could help so you don't keep losing fuses, it would just pop the tab on the tool and not the fuse.

      check out house A/C repair, if you passed auto A/C certification the you should have no problem passing it for houses. Its way less cramped and it is more stable in the long term. or heavy equipment like bulldozes. Cars are not great because you often need special tools that cost big money then next year they change the design so now you have a useless tool whereas house and heavy equipment are basic and don't change as frequent.

    I had a similar issue with my 94 Accord, and every time I changed the fuse (small lights as it's called in Hondas) and turned the lights on, the fuse would instantly blow with an audible pop. I later found out it was a wiring short in the stereo system harness wiring that was making unintentional ground. I fixed it by putting electrical tape on the exposed wire and fixed my issue.
    However, I don't know if newer Fords can do something similar in comparison. Best of luck fixing it!

    The fuse is blowing because you have a short in the wiring. Its not the taillights. If they're unplugged and its still blowing a fuse, its not in the damn taillights.

    You have an intermittent short on one of the wires 12v wires coming off of that fuse. Look at the schematic and see what all is feed by that fuse and trace it back. Easier said than done. When I was a technician this was one of my specialties.

    Use a volt meter to check the resistance on any of the wires sending power to the parking lights. If you get any resistance then there is a short along that wire. Also make sure the ground terminals for the battery and ground straps for the motor are clean lol thats a good start too

    as someone who works at ford we've had a couple of ppl who brought in 2010-12 5.0s with the same issue ruled out to be a bad ground from the taillights/reverse lights

  • @connormettus4799
    @connormettus4799 6 лет назад

    Also as a tip to anyone....when your lights go out the circuit treats them as if they dont exist (they no longer have a resistance value ie not a circuit element)....what Im saying is if your fuse is blowing like this, its enough to bypass what is built in excess handling ability of the circuit, which would indicate a larger issue than one or two lights going out

    I'd check around the driveshaft to make sure there aren't any wires hanging around. That happened in my dad's car where one of the little clips for the wire bundle broke under the car and it hung against the driveshaft, so eventually it rubbed its way through the coating and exposed like 5 different wires in the bundle and grounded them to the driveshaft.

  • @tools2use975
    @tools2use975 6 лет назад

    So many ways I can explain this. Lol Let's see if this is the easiest. Heat dries the the coating around your wires. (No protection)
    When you drive the current going through your wires hit capacity.
    When the dried coated wires touch you end up with a shortage.
    Use electric tape around all the wires that plug into the connectors. And you'll save yourself a shop visit.
    P.s your the man DIB. Videos are always entertaining.

      I'd bank on a bad trunk wiring harness. Those wires flex so much from being opened and closed so much that it probably broke a wire internally and has an intermittent fault or even a permanently bad connection which is only just strong enough to continue to allow normal operation until it shorts and pops the fuse. That would sure explain why the length of time between fuses varies so much.

    Could be a body control module. My chevy cobalt had the same problem where the tailights shorted out. The wattage would jump to 25 on a 5 watt fuze and we put in a 25 watt fuze which helped but we eventually put a new body control module. That fixed whole problem.

      Yeah, the fuse that is recommended is the one that's perfect for the circuit and the bulbs. It worked perfect for years without an issue with the fuse it's supposed to use, so that means there is a problem, and yes it means that something is "broken" somewhere. To tell someone to go up in amperage on a fuse is some of the stupidest advice you can give to them!
      "Oh Hell... my car just burned to the ground, but that pesky fuse didn't blow though" Lmao

    • @davidmartin2231

  • @MrADVANCEDTEK
    @MrADVANCEDTEK 6 лет назад

    I'm coming in a bit late so if it's fixed... my bad. So the first I would what uses that fuse. You'll have to read your fuse box label. If it only has tail lights listed then ok but if you have tail light/marker(sometimes called park lights) then you'll have to check more than just rear lights so make sure that fuse powers only the tails. If so disconnecting the tail lights only confirms the light itself is fine not the harness forward of the connector. You'll have to follow it forward. With intermittent issues I normally switch to circuit breaker fuse. That way when it trips the breaker it will reset to get your lights back. Now you can tug on the harness in small sections while listening for the reset click.
    Normally the first place I'd go would be any mod. Not saying it's been butchered but that you've changed the factory harness routing which can stress harness fitment making it rub through at a sharp place or by heat near it. So any mod can cause it. And I think most
    your mods aren't in the back so the harness should be good. I'd check the front DRL harness on both sides. Headlights are on their own circuit so you shouldn't have to have them on. Just your parking lights but if it doesn't blow the fuse then check around the headlight bulbs or housing where the harness comes in to the marker light socket. I've seen burned wires barely touching the headlight causing a short. Hth.
