  • Just a quick look at a micro-project of mine to extend my wireless network using DD-WRT and a Linksys wrt1900 acs router as an additional wifi access point.
    Nothing too formal :)

    What was the point to put DD-WRT on it for an access point? You can do that with stock firmware, and it be more reliable WiFi wise anyway

      Watching this in 2021. I believe that the original firmware hasn't been updated in ages so it must have lots of security holes

    I have a Ubiquiti Edger Router X and two Unifi AP AC Lite access points serving wifi at my apartment but I used to have the Asus RT-68U router and single UAP AC Lite and I could roam between the two networks (same SSIDs and authentication information) without a problem.

    I have been running the WRT1900ACS in my home network for about a year using OLSR routing (mobile roaming as you call it). My house has thick walls and is half underground, so cell signal is bad. When I first moved in, I would have the problem of using my cellphone and walking from one end of the house only for it to drop the WiFi enhanced call as it jumped to the next AP. OLSR solved this problem by handing off the link state to the next AP with only little degradation in the transition. At least it doesn't drop the call as I move around anymore.

    Clients like to stick as much as they can to the same station, the best thing you can do is lower the Transmit power for the router so that in the room where there is the ap the device has week signal and is forced to switch, As for handoff unifi does not have it in there AC line anymore and as I recall the feature was less useful as it caused more problems then solved them

    i use WiFi Manager on Android and i'm able to walk the house and watch the device change between router and AP in seconds. you can tell the app how often to scan which helps but the trade off (i assume) is more frequent scanning = less battery life. one other thing, the app relies on location services being enabled to auto switch quickly.

    You didn't show how to setup the router within ddwrt. Around 8-10 secs of screen capture was not enough.

    When 🍎 upgraded to AC WiFi on its devices the tether effect to nearest AP (also must be 802.11AC) made roaming seamless to smartly choose the strongest signal being transmitted on the LAN where ever you roam in the building. Think of WiFi signal in AC as a string attached from iPhone to AP, then as you roam a new string begins to develop for the next access point and once it surpasses the previous signal, that string connection is dropped and the new one takes hold and becomes active. Seamless, that’s how it works.

    I got an extra wrt3200acm laying around and I have no clue what to do with it other than use it as an extender. but then again I got very good coverage throughout my entire property already.

    Seeing a lot of comments only talking about Ubiquiti's zero hand-off support being dropped, but I believe they just used a weirder protocol or set-up for their zero hand-off. Upon checking their forums about it, seems they didn't use standard 802.11 protocols for the communication between APs hence the feature itself was never a very clean implementation.
    The concept of the AP's controlling which actual AP you're connected to for strongest signal at all times is actually making a big resurgence in the consumer AP/Router space with the Netgear Orbi, Eero, Google Wi-Fi, and to a lesser extent the Linksys Wi-Max systems (this one's a bit weird but also the one that's been around the longest). Still not sure if there's a shared wireless controller between the systems or if every company uses a different implementation for their own environment however, but many of these systems can not be identified by client devices as separate APs, so the hand-off when roaming is a bit more seamless.
    Getting a feature like this to work with DD-WRT or Tomato on the other hand is something that'll probably take some time.

    I know this video is a bit old now but you should definitely check out open-mesh access points and switches. They support the seamless roaming feature very well and theyre a breeze to setup. I have a installed 15 of them to date and havent had a single issue (other than interferance from competing Wi-Fi in the area)

    Great video - I purchased the. WRT 1900acs for my main router 3 days ago. It was going to replace my Tplink archer vr900 but it did not produce the speeds over wifi compared to the Tplink. I tried the DD Wrt firmware also but the speeds were only 80% compared to the Tplink. I had great hopes for the linksys, I've gone back to my Tplink vr900 now. I'm confused to which router to purchase now. I have a busy house hold with lots of wired and wireless clients.

    The seemless switching between AP's is always controlled by the client device. Not all phones/laptops will behave the same

    • @jakemeyer6047
      @jakemeyer6047 8 лет назад +1

      In this situation, yes. However if you set up a proper network of APs (such as Ubiquiti or Meraki) there is a controller which hands connections off from AP to AP.

    • @eliasong0
      @eliasong0 8 лет назад +2

      Even with enterprise AP systems (like Aruba, Cisco, Ruckus, Meraki, Aerohive) the client tends to be in control of roaming decisions. The controller can inform the client when to roam and which AP to roam to (802.11v and k) and make the transition easy (802.11r) but if a client really doesn't want to roam, it will stick to its existing AP (unless controller decides to deauth client and only permit association to proper AP - this leads to a very bad WiFi experience). And recent 11ac Ubiquiti APs don't even support these protocols or their proprietary "Zero-handoff" (which actually hands off connections but kills wifi capacity and performance).

    I did a similar setup using the WRT1900AC and WRT1200AC and found the same issue. Coverage was great but many devices aren't programed to switch between access points on the fly. Example would be if I was connected near an access point and moved my laptop or device towards the other router, as long as the connection wasn't broken it would remain on the original. I would define it as a semi-mesh system. Newer mesh systems that have recently launch have the capability of controlling this problem from the router side using software, rather than the receiving unit, i.e. phone or computer. Changes in speed and signal can be seen and should automatically hand off to another unit/router. One thing I didn't hear if you mentioned is if you set the secondary router in bridge mode. If you haven't, you should. Without the second router in bridge mode, both routers are using DHCP and assigning IP addresses; this is not good and will cause conflicts somewhere along the way. The only option that may help a little without buying a newer system would be to change the SSID of your secondary router. Some newer devices can switch, to better networks when available. Not a perfect solution but worth a try. Wi-Fi networks get saved in devices so shouldn't be too much of a problem. This would give you the ability to override the connection manually much raster as well without rebooting the device to reaffirm the correct router. I probably could've said that in less words but I'm tired. Hope it helps.

    I wonder why you didn't get one TP-Link package and then extra TP-Link add-on units and then you would not need any more routers as you just use the LAN port on the bottom of the TP-Link add-on units and you should be good to go, We have TP-Link works really well and we had no problem with it at all.

    You mentioned that your 5Ghz went down, and You couldn't recreate the problem, that's because you never had one. The 2.4 and 5 Ghz will only light up on the router when there is a device connected to it, when connecting the 2.4 and 5 as an access point you have to make sure that both channels are pinging off the main router that's connected to the modem.

    NETWORKING HELP NEEDED:
    My family recently moved to Ethiopia. I brought my Linksys WRT3200ACM to use as our router. Unfortunately, the internet speed isn't high enough to get good use out of it. However, I have found that I can get the speed I need using a mobile hotspot. I purchased a Huawei E5576 locally and get good, consistent internet out of it (good for this area, at least).
    The problem is that the range for the Huawei E5576 isn't very strong. We've been moving it back and forth between rooms as needed, but this isn't the preference. I'd like to set up my Linksys router as a repeater for the Huawei router; however, when I try to do this I receive an error message from Linksys saying that it failed to connect. The network name and password are correct. There are no special characters or numbers in the network name or password. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Or, is it possible that the Huawei E5576 can't be used with my Linksys WRT3200ACM?
    I'm very new at this and need help. Thanks in advance.

    ok just to give you an idea what my problem is: i got a little TP-Link router that allows my 3G connection to be shared on a wireless network. Thing is someone simply hacks it and i am left with picking up the bill. i viewed all the forums, and videos and did all the recommendations "including mac binding" nothing works... Now i think i know how they are doing it. BUT really check out router hacking yourself and do a test on your own setup... i tell you what you would be surprised how "relatively easy" it is... If you could find a solution that would be cool thanks for reading

    i ran ddwrt on my old linksys a long time ago. Added so much in just enhancing the features already built in like expanding port forwarding. this is just 1 example... im in the need of extending my wifi and leaning towards a new router first. Nighthawg x4s to replace my asus rt-66u ... caching up this video right now as im in an area with horrible reception so gonna watch and excited to see how things worked out for you.
    and all those saying pfsense.. I was going to use that but I installed ipfire and that was awesome. just removed it as im chasing down an issue and trying to narrow down things. Maybe my wifi router is the culprit but I am contemplating trying pfsense... and also sophos utm home (free)

    I have the Linksys 1900acs and I turned it into a wireless repeater without needing to install the DDwrt firmware on the router. So if you want the router to work properly, instead of bricking your router it’s a lot easier to do.
