You said "Sonder" very well (in German, the "s" is pronounced like an English "z"), but "Klasse" is pronounced "klah-se" where the "e" in the "se" is soft like the "e" in "egg." Love the car. Brings back lots of memories from when I was growing up in Vienna, Austria. Thanks for the great vids.
Swell, nice rebuilt there. Back in the 70s I used to work on that smallish engine and try to enhance the wheel power output. Huge power increase is yielded by installing DKW Mungga intake manifold and it's twin barreled zenith stromberg NDIX carburetor. Missed that moments.....
wow! the same bosch starter I got on my 1961 ford taunus 17m, the guy that sell me the car gave me an extra too, I didn't expected that similarity in an auto union.
I sure enjoyed the view of the engine. Lots of interesting technical info. Who'd have thunk points would be there and fan would be where it is and fuel pump run by vacuum or something...
kstadden Fuel pump is run by crankcase pressure, vacuum and blowby essentially ......blow / suck action moves a diaphragm to pull fuel . Simple and works fine. Lots of snowmobiles use this system too
Thanks for sharing - as Dekawee says, there is a comprehensive parts interchange on these cars - starter should be no problem - the Beemer one will work very well for you. Also, as the car has been converted to 12 volt, if you still have the original 6 volt starter around, you can use it quite happily - it has no problem running 12V at all. The original starters are actually quite easy to overhaul and parts such as brushes easily available too. I noticed that the felt lubricator in the contact breaker cam is missing?
Hello, since your dkw is already on 12volts, you might use a bmw 316 starter, it will fit, usually, right away.On dkw's of course. I also watch your video's regularly, I like them. Greetings from holland.
David Brower I think you are right the 316 was about the cheapest version, it had an 4 cilinder 1600 cc engine equipped with a carburettor. The other versions had injection systems
I guess you have heard the joke about the DKW standing for Deutsche Kinder Wagon, or baby carriage, because of their size. The DKWs I saw in Germany in 1971 were very boxy, but still small.
Boy o boy do I have questions. I just bought a 1959 DKW Junior that's been stored in a barn for 50 yrs. I'm a mechanic by trade and have owned several Detroit classic cars, but this one is all new to me. The engine spins free by hand which is promising. I plan on trying to get it running this spring and I'm kind of at a loss of where to start. I'm not even sure if I have to mix gas and oil before putting it in the tank. I'll take any advice you're willing to give. I assume changing the fluids, and cleaning the points would be step 1?
Yes you want to mix the oil into the gas 40 to 1. 99% chance the open roller bearings in your crankshaft are bad. Sorry. But give it a try anyway. Maybe you get lucky. ???
Now, talking about your starter problem: When you purchased this DKW, he was 6 volts or 12 volts ? I ask, because the DKWs who came from Germany to Brazil were all 6 volts. The only year in which they were manufactured in 12 volts (1967), these vehicles were already fully produced in Brazil. If your starter originally worked with 6 volts, and started to operate with 12 volts, the following situation occurs: It even works for sometime, turning must faster than a starter in its normal voltage, but, after some time, the field coil can not handle the overload, and it burns. Tha solution is to change the field coil by a 12-volt version. Dont forget to replace the brushes too. In Brazil whe use the field coil of the General Motors Opala model that is more easy to found than DKW original field coil. The cooling system on the industrial Ajax and Penjax engines I used to work on was two stroke and had the same type cooling.
That's pretty cool car , thats the second one I ever seen the other one didn't run. Thanks for the video
more nicely dkw I also own 5 dkws very nicely. . . greeting Martin

Nice. I think I may have actually learned something.

dekawee When I lived in Germany just about every army private had a BMW 316. Easy to work on, and cheap. But I don't think North America got them.
Nice! Just so you know some modern cars have service positions too. I.e Mini Cooper

I've heard of the DKW, but I've never seen one in person, nor have I seen one in action.
Jason Carpp stay tuned and you might just see one in action !
2stroketurbo I look forward to it. :)
why is the radiator behind the engine close to fire wall ?????
Helloo my Friend how been you...can you to inform us if have some motorcycle that use same Biela / Connecting rod, from Crankshaft of Dkw Cars ?

Oh I forgot to mention that dkw juniors are 750 CC's
Lovely cold war vehicle..fuel economy would be approx?
Hydrosyphon, or thermosyphon? How do you get the timing right with 3 sets of points? Doesn't the slightest difference in point gap, change the timing?
Does the heater just pull air blown in by the radiator fan from under the hood? If so, i hope you have no exhaust leaks, eh? :)
yes, precisely , the radiator fan blows air thru the radiator that is now warm into the distribution box . No exhaust leaks, thankfully !
Man where can you find these dkw's for sale?
