I am a 30 year welder. Just a little helpful advice. If you weld an a dirty bucket, before welding the seam, burn the joint to glowing red with a torch and let it cool. If you need to close a gap in metal, first tack weld the gap, then hit it with a hammer when it is still hot (glowing red). It’s a technique called hot tacking. And when welding thick material, pre heat the metal to help it penetrate. I have fixed hundreds of buckets. Have a great day.

when i was a grease monkey in the 70s, i had to rebuild the swing cylinders on a ford backhoe twice the size of that toy. each cylinder was 6 inches in diameter and
about 4 feet long. it was not easy as i had very few tools to work with. i had to pin the cylinder to a truck bumper and use another vehicle to pull the piston. i am
jealous of your shop and tools, stuff i could not even dream about! i pulled the engine head off the tractor with a hoist to replace a bad valve seat. the oil pan was
cast iron an inch thick and weighed more than me! no power tools or air compressor or hydraulic jack. just a piece of greasy wood on wheels! ahhh, good old days!

The rebuild cycle was 6 months so one was working while the other was being rebuilt. Any ground engagement tool takes a beating and stress cracks are common.

The Terramite Backhoes came in both diesel and gasoline engines. I bought a new one about 1995. I still have it today and it still works great. Still has the same engine. I have used it to put in water lines, dug manholes, sewer lines, gas lines, underground electric lines, plus many septic tank systems. Dug out for basements, house footers, driveways, swimming pools, dug out tree stumps, plowed snow covered streets. Pulled cars and trucks out of ditches, pulled out 1/2 mile of fence posts, hauled concrete blocks on work site, drug trees to burn piles, plus many other types of jobs. This little machine is a real work horse. The only problem with it is all your buddies and neighbors want to borrow it all the time. Bought a small set of forks that attached to front bucket to load and unload clothes washers, cloth dryers, cook stoves and other appliances into and out of pickup truck beds. I paid $13,000.00 USD for it back when it was new.

18:44 is the moaning wail of a dry pivot point. not my equipment but from looks it would benefit from a full grease job.
nice little rig but like comparable models, they're intended for light duty only. unfortunately, rentals get thoroughly abused. that's a load of stress cracks. now that it's really clean you can park it outside and alternately wet down and "exercise" it for a few days, then watch for orange streaks from otherwise invisible cracks. once identified would probably be a good idea to drill at end of each crack and then add a gusset to the repairs.
also - current battery is a size or too larger than it should be. looks like the hold down stud will contact and wear through case.

One i did work with in a factory (i maintained among other a robot welder in the past, 30 years ago) was used to weld thick pieces in the ship industry.
He did show me how to weld with a underpowered welder for that thickness he used.
On two half inch thick steel plate pieces he did show me he did grind the edges so they was 45 degree towards each other making it look like a 90 degree V shape between the plates, and he did also place the angle slightly off so the angle could naturally bend itself some due to the heat of welding because when it gets cold it shrinks some in the V shape.
He did one weld on a MIG between them plates and then grinded that down so it was looking rounded like kind of a U shape at the bottom of the V. And then weld again two mig welds on top of that, and then grind down those separate as before like a U shaped rounded off, and if one need thicker like a half a inch plates need then use more welds over that like 3 welds and so on until the thickness of the welds gets right. He did grind it down every time he did weld to get rid of residue/slag. And it looked solid and was likely very solid :)
When he was finished he said "This will pass a x-ray test".
If one weld fill in a crack or fill a hole a trick is to use a copper plate behind it, then one can fill in welding because steel wont stick to the copper and is easy to remove and makes so one does not have to grind as much as one needs if filling a hole without doing that.
Yeah, i did learn lots of small tricks and things from coworkers in the past.
I did like to weld with much heat, i could weld faster that way and the welding looked smoother. Probably not energy efficient in our day and time today, but that was what i did like, i sped up the heat and feeder, and my coworkers was tired of changing it back when they did use the machine.
But yeah, it was how i did like to do it back in the days to get spare time for making own projects :)
Another one did learn me to change a flywheels starter cog using heat from carefully using a cutting torch, heat makes the cog ring slightly larger than the flywheel and the cog fall off almost as good as by it self :)
It was on a white Pontiac Firebird around 1974 model look that he brought with him when he did move to my country, he did choose that instead of the Porsche 911 he also had because he could not bring more than one car without paying VAT tax.
It was a lovely car in a lovely time where gasoline prices was not an issue :)
Perhaps make a half a inch hole in that digger bucket so it wont end up being filled with water again or is that a bad idea if one dig mud perhaps..? hmm..

I always enjoy your videos. Since I began watching them last year, I've repaired my 5500 watt generator, my pressure washer, and my lawnmower. I already knew how, but watching you gave me the incentive to get off my butt and fix them. The difference is I put new carbs on them rather than rebuild them. You can buy almost any of them on Amazon or eBay for $20 or less, plus I don't have a sonic cleaner. The one on the Craftsman mower was too corroded to clean anyway.

these terramites were made by the power king/economy tractor company. i have a 1947 economy, it uses a lot of surplus ford model a parts. the steering assy., the clutch and tranny, and a modified banjo style rear diff, it also uses farmall a rear tires and rims, and has a manually operated, three point implement hitch set up in the rear. they were one of the first all gear drive small tractors. mine is powered by a 9hp flat head briggs & stratton engine, and has a lot more power than you would think for the engine size, it will pull twice it's weight easy. this one uses some repurposed auto parts as well. the rear diff is a modified gm part. it's nice to see it's still working hard enough to get broken. and since it's mustie's, i know it's in good hands for the repairs.

Glad you were able to fabricate your own parts. I worked for Teramite a few years ago and unfortunately parts are no longer available.
Actually I think the whole company decided to close. They were owned by the same family for many years. Then an overseas company bought them with no vision forward. Sad they were great machines and I had many customers with ones over 20 years old.

Most heavy equipment blades and buckets have what appears to be random beads of weld on them, but they are wear points to prevent the cracks you have on your bucket. Feel free to run a few more beads in places that get a lot of wear. Yes, an inside weld will be stronger, but you need one on the outside just to wear away.

need to make a belly pan for it though.. the mounting holes where there when you had it up in the air.. will save damage to the pump and stuff and save you a lot of money in the event of grounding over something..

mustie, you should overlay a couple pieces of flatbar onto the back of the bucket as "skidplates" to keep the bucket from wearing through. ideally you'd use AR500 grade flat bar, but that might get pricy....
