3.850 is the outside measurement of the mag. They make these mags in more than one length. The mag length needs to mate with the specific chassis made for that length. In general all the 338 Lapua mags will be 3.850, but some of the 7mm, 300 mag type mags use the 3.850 & a shorter length.
3.850 may be max length for the mags. When i was setting jam on my bullets to the lands in my rpr 338 i got 3.900 to the lands. The bullet wouldnt even eject after. Had to pull the bolt.
Nice video! Loctite is your friend when it comes to the screws. I used it on all of mine because I heard some people say they moved and some said they didn't. So, I went the extra step and gave it some blue Loctite
I have this rifle in 6.5 Creedmoor. Scope is Viper PST Gen II Milrad 5-25X. Shoots great. I've had 3/8" groups at 100 yards, and I've hit steel out to 1,400 yards, but that bolt is not smooth in or out. Kind of irritating but considering it shoots about as well as some of these $6,000 rifles I've seen, I guess I'm happy with it. Someday I will put a new barreled action in it but still shopping those. The primary reason I bought this Elite Precision was the MDT Chassis which is awesome. With MDT weights, the rifle now weighs 24 lbs. I was hoping to see my own shots but that's not working so good. Overall, for an old guy, this is a great rifle for the money.
It is a great rifel , i bought mine stright out of the box it's a 338Lapua MDT. LSS EL and it came with a big muzzel brake savage is under rated & it shoots great and point on contact & i think savage is the best for the money and to me it's right up there with Barrett

Thanks! I'm working on another video now with more load data. So far it likes the 285 ELDMs best, as I'm having difficulty getting the correct seating depth for the Berger 300 OTM's. I have ordered some 300g Match Kings and hope to do load development with them soon.
3.850 appears to be the outside measurement at the top of the magazine. Like you, I found that to be a bit disappointing when I measured for 300 gr Bergers, I wanted to have them at 3.800 ish, but until I take them down to about 3.7600, they won't fit into the mag. So I'll be at starting .080 jump, rather than the starting point of -.040 that I wanted to start. Your next video re: the Berger instructions was a bit of a relief & helpful, though...seeing them suggesting to go all the way out to -.130 and range through those various distances. So at some point if I just single-feed, I can test out to have them closer to jam. Like you, I also had best results (so far) with the 285 ELD, with H1000 (w/CCI 250) & IMR 7828SSC (especially, but that was Fed GM215M). I'll be using some slower burn powder for the 300s to start. My scope base also came loose on my 3rd day out, so at about 40 rounds or so. I would have sworn I had already put locktite on, but may have done it to a different rifle, as I was working on several during that time. It's on there now, and has stayed put (so far). Thanks for the Good video!
@@kcwestoutdoorclub3232 I loaded some and shot this week...3 range trips in 4 days...I still need to go through the data. I bought another .338, Christensen MPR with a 26" steel barrel...so now I have two Lapua to load for. I also had some .308 & .30-06 I was testing. I do know I had some decent results with some of the Berger 300s, but will have to review what exact combo(s) did well. I still kept them all within mag-feed length. But my next trip I am going to try loading longer OAL and single-feed, just to see if I get some better results. I also just got a chrono...so I have that output to also go through. I've learned from others on here that those velocity measurements matter more than groups, when shooting out to distance. I'll try to follow up when I get through it all, but will also hopefully be able to put it into videos that I put on channel and use to review results later on. I'm about half way through one of the first ones for the MPR debut.
Hey, couple questions, how long is the gun without the muzzle break? Savage website seems to be unclear. Second, what rifle bag have you found that fits it?
If you can find it, these days. But your suggestion seems in line with the idea that H1000 may possibly have too fast of a burn rate, especially with that 30" barrel? I don't have the Elite, rather the precision so it's 24". So, yes perhaps Retumbo (someday) or as I'm going to try, some Ramshot LRT, Ramshot Magnum & US869 to see if any decent groups. 869 may be too slow in the 24", but might really help in that 30"?
Bolt body is 7.5" long. In my Part 2 review (linked in the description) I have several close-ups of the action cycling. Or were you wanting something different?
@@kcwestoutdoorclub3232 i was looking for the diameter of the bolt body. Savage bodies are a little small . PTG makes a bolt body that is slightly larger than the factory one. Id like to see if Savage changed their dimensions. Thanks and happy shooting.
I've never used factory ammo so I can't speak for that. With my reloads, I did have some rounds stuck in the chamber if I didn't keep the chamber clean and didn't trim my brass. At this point I've shot 500 rounds through it and haven't had any issues the last 300 rounds since I started trimming my brass after each firing and cleaning the chamber with a shotgun 20 GA brass brush every 50-100 rounds.
I am interested in this rifle in the 300WM but have heard numerous complaints on Savage rifle extractor/ejecting issues. Did you have any of those issues? Looked like it may have happened once or twice in your video. Hate to drop 1,600+ on a rifle to have issues like that.
I hear you, and I hope it does not happen to me! I did not have any extraction issues, but having only shot 50 rounds through it, I do not consider myself qualified to speak for its reliability. On the 200g Speer soft points I did get a hang-up on the final round in the magazine, like it was nose diving. That happened twice as you can see on video. I've been unable to replicate it since. Comparatively, those are tiny bullets with a small overall length. I don't know what was happening, but since it didn't happen with the Bergers or ELDMs, and it was quick to fix while firing I didn't mention it. I've heard the extractor/ejector can be an issue as well. If that problem manifests I'll just order a $20 upgrade kit from Sharp Shooter Supply or get a bulk pack of parts and replace them every 500 rounds or whatever. From what I read in forums it is cheap and easy to do. Time will tell, it is a factory gun after all and I've heard about issues with all brands.
Let's be honest. Does it have a super sloppy bolt and doesn't like to eject spent brass? 🤔 I was so close to buying one of these. Couldn't see spending that kind of money on a gun and it not function properly. Savage is so bad for this there are dedicated aftermarket parts to try and fix these things. So I figured I'd save a little money and buy the rpr.
Yeah to be honest it is not the smoothest bolt compared to other factory rifles. The bolt lift is far more noticeable, but that is how Savage designed it I guess.... either way I can't take a 338 to a PRS match so I don't care about bolt lift that is slightly heavier than others. I've had a few failures to extract spent brass, but it is difficult to know if that is due to my reloading practices. A friend recommended cleaning the chamber every 50-100 rounds, trimming brass after each firing, and ensuring I have at least 2 tho shoulder bump. Doing all that seems to help. I bought one of those aftermarket "heavy" extractor/ejector kits and was surprised that the stock Savage parts seemed beefier.

Be careful using too long of a screw in the scope base. If this is the same as other Precision Actions you can mash the threads on the barrel with the forward mounting screw. You run the risk of damaging the receiver and barrel threads and when it comes time to switch out barrels, you're going to have a major problem. I'm NOT familiar with this rifle, -just saying...
Thanks for posting this! Great advice. The screw closest to the muzzle is directly over the threads for the barrel. I left this one alone and used the factory screw. The others, I did replace.

The large action models do not come with a muzzle break, out of the box mine just had a thread protector at the end of the barrel.
