This is my analysis of the comic.
The comic is called "sword bending."
"Swordbending" is a comic book that takes place in Book Three: Fire, originally released by Nickelodeon Comics Club magazine in 2009 and later released by Dark Horse Comics in The Lost Adventures.

ATLA doesn't take place over the course of three years. However, Zuko had been hunting Aang for that long.
yup
He was hunting aang before the ATLA series, remember, ATLA started when aang was found, and Zuko said he searched the whole world.
@@dexverse7792 Bro, that's literally what my comment is about.
@@redacted90 oh I thought you were commenting that it didn’t make any sense
You stole the words right out of my mouth-
3 years is correct, it is the amount of time since Zuko’s banishment
Plus the time of the overall series spans 7-8 months, the majority spanning the winter and summer solstices.
@@vagabond1920 No the whole series took place in 1 summer its confirmed the sozins commet would happen at the end of summer
@@Clownzyy could have been the end of next summer. Winter solstice doesn't exist during the summer
@@Clownzyy You a damn lie. Zuko hair didnt go through all those changes in one month. Make it make sense lol
At the start of the series, Zuko's banishment was about two years and I think the series itself was ten months
Sokka is an extremely capable fighter in his own right, but it makes sense that Zuko beats him. Zuko is the blue spirit, he's singlehandedly raided a fire nation military base and stolen the most valuable military target from them. He's so skillful that the blue spirit is wanted as an enemy of the state. He, without using bending, holds up agains several earth kingdom veterans in Zuko alone. He does eventually bend, but he holds his own just fine up until that point. Up until he learns from the dragons, I'd say that he's significantly better as a swordsman and martial artist than he is a fire bender. Also, like he said, he's been training in swordsmanship since childhood, while Sokka is still new at it. In avatar there are very characters who can hold their own against skilled benders without using bending themselves. Sokka is one of them. Zuko is another.
Sure but i think it's unfair to say Zuko wins every fight. Not because he isn't more skilled but because he is less disciplined. Yes. I said that sokka is more disciplined then Zuko. He is silly and dorky but when the shit hits the fan Sokka never loses sight of his goal and what's important. In a spar like this Zuko would take the first round before Sokka realizes how much more skilled Zuko is. BUT like his fight with Piandao he would soon realize that he needs to fight Unconventionally to win. And Zuko is not Piandao. Zuko would not retain his calm as Sokka began using "dirty" moves like maybe blinding Zuko. And after that all it would take would be a handful of classic Sokka insults and Zukos focus would be completely blown. Coming at Sokka with reckless angry attacks. I 100% believe this would give Sokka the leg up he needs to close the skill gap. Especially against Zuko.
@@LiberatorofSanctuary that’s a good point. I was thinking about a fair fight, but if Sokka played dirty like that, you’re right he’d probably win
I think Sokka has the potential to surpass him. Zuko has swords and firebending, Sokka has hand to hand, sword, boomerang and club experience.
I can imagine that Zuko learned how to use swords because he wasn't as talented in firebending as Azula so he trained with them to compensate for that
@@ArtichokeAnarchy And if Ozai realized that Zuko was almost as much of a badass with swords as Azula was with fire bending he could have had a second highly competent killer in the royal family.
Realistically without bending in a real fight Zuko would’ve killed him. Boomerang or not remember Zuko held back and beat him repeatedly
The guy with the ability to burn people alive at the flick of his wrist would win against a guy with a sword? REALLY!?
Read it again, but slowly.
True, but it was just sparring. It's considered courteous to not murder your sparring partner, even if he's making puns repeatedly.
Nah boomerang is op
Obviously he held back they were sparring
Zuko was tracking aang since before the series started after his banishment
I believe in episode 1 iroh mentions that zuko was banished only a few weeks ago.
@@stevy2 book 2 episode 1 has Iroh try to comfort Zuko during his 3rd anniversary of his banishment
@@stevy2 There was a flashback of that in Book 3. Since it was a flashback though, he really had been banished for three years.
Durin the eclipse zuko said he was 13 and I I believe he’s 15 or 14 now
@@Forestclan2.0 when teh show took place he was 16 so was sokka katara was 14 aang and toph were 12
Katara rooting so hard for her brother is so wholesome 😊
Also, Toph with her upside-down Zuko banner is hilarious 🤣
Well, she is blind, XD
"It's upside down isn't it..?"
Pretty sure this is also when she still hates and distrusts Zuko, since they're still at the temple, and the two didn’t go on Katara's revenge quest until after they fled the temple.
1:45 Piandao: _recommends Sokka to take 'Lee' as a fake Fire Nation identity_
Zuko: _takes 'Lee' as a fake Fire Nation identity_
Oh, yeah. It's all coming together.
Zuko took lee as his fake earth kingdom identity before he met lee and after he left that village zuko never went anywhere near the fire nation in book 2 after he was branded a wanted man
But if you try no to be from the Fire Nation, you shouldn't name yourself "Lee". Because they may think you were born in the Fire Nation or maybe in the Fire Nation Colonies (probably).
@@luchitovibritannia5389 Lee literally means "fire"
@@joelsasmad missed a chance to say "lee-terally
Zuko IS sokka
They mean 3 years because he started trying to capture the avatar when he was 13, then he turned 16 on the show
you're right
yeah your right thats what i was going to say
aang is not 16 at the end of the show, at the end aang is 13
oh wait you meant zuko nvm
I think Zuko was 16 at the beginning of the show since Iroh mentions his age in season 1 when Zuko's breaking through the naval blockade.
"Of all the ideas you've had in your 16 years this is the worst" - not an exact quote but that's roughly it I distinctly remember that he says Zuko is 16.
So either his birthday was offscreen between the first episode and the winter solstice pt 2, somewhen later offscreen where he turned 17, or his birthday is in fall and he's still 16 in the end of the show.
It could be either tbh because the show didn't make a big deal about anyone's birthday, except Yue's.
Edit: and it's unlikely that everyone's birthday is in fall lol
Edit II: the sulking day thing that marks his 3 years of exile in Book 2 Episode 1 isn't his birthday but the anniversary of his banishment.
@@glanni zuko was banished at 13 years old and ever since he has tried to capture aang and at the end he was 16 so 3 years
Zuko actually did hunt aang for three years. He was banished from the fire nation at age 14ish and didnt return "victorious" in his quest until the end of season 2/ beginning of season 3
he was banished at 11
he was banished at 13
@@saintlysylas theres no way he could've been banished at 11. One that's way too young and two, that would've placed him at the same age is katara and we know he is the oldest in the gaang
@@robertlewis6797 nvm he was 13
Hé was 13
I love Toph with upside down Zuko. I think its fun to imagine her trying to convince Katara to draw it for her and Katara is just like "I mean, I'm rooting for Sokka but sure I guess"
Actually it was the duke that drew it for her
Now that I think about it, Sokka's burn actually falls flat when we consider that in just over two years Zuko went from a child handed an impossible quest with zero clues to go on to having his ship with visual range of Aang's awakening skybeam at the time it happened. In two years he got seemingly closer than the entire rest of the world had in almost a century!
Entirely by accident. Not a feat of any kind
But... During that century Aang was hiding un the iceberg. Zuko could only track him bc Aang began to left something to track.
@@HookupCulture It was not an accident nothing is an accident he couldn't have done that as an accident as he had no idea what he was doing he was going into it blindly, literally.
@@annabellthedoll9953it was assumed if avatar already into next cycle they will be southern water tribe member as kuruk was northerner, so South Pole here we go.
We all remember the beginning when sokka got thrashed by Zuko easily only to get beaten by a returning boomerang.
It's so fitting for Zuko to fall for this again.
Yup.
Zuko is easily a top 3 swordsmen in the show. Even Ozai feared his skills during the solar eclipse.
Everyone knows, sokka's best form isn't as sword guy.
_He's the idea guy._
I hope you mean the Boomerang guy
Or the Meat guy
Or the failed Vegetarian guy
its shown specially later on book three and beyond that he's the man with the plan, his skills are exceptional to planning, he was stated, as a swordsmen, he was still very effective, but just not as effective as zuko by this comic, he didn't need bending to win.
Just because he's a great fire bender, doesnt make him better in everything else.
That isnt how martial arts work
@@shaktimoscardini4610 lol
he's the leader guy
Boomerang and that sword with a ball in its front are his go 2 weapons, but I bet you he's grown far better when he became an adult
I think he said 3 years because zuko actually spend 3 years searching, even while aang was still in the ice
2:45 It actually took 3 yrs if you rewatch the flashback with Ozai burning Zuko's face when he was 13.
Sokka was never supposed to be capable in combat. He boasted about being a warrior but never really had official training or demonstrated any skill. His true strength was his intelligence and cleverness. Despite his desire to be like his father and the other men of his tribe, he ended up more as a tactician. He discovered the eclipse and planned the attack. He helped devise a defense strategy at the inhabited air temple. He shone brightly in these moments.
So, a scene where he is repeatedly beaten in combat wouldn't really deny his role in the story, but rather help solidify it.
Warriors are more than brawn and skill, and intelligence, strategy, and problem solving could very easily be considered skill. Just not the sword swinging kind.
Saying Sokka isn't a capable warrior is to disagree with Master Pian Dao's entire philosophy. Where he deems Sokka a Warrior and a good Swordsman off of his ingenuity rather than technical skill.
@@HookupCulture I was speaking in a more traditional sense, as Sokka is not well suited for physical combat. It should be obvious through context that I believe Sokka is a warrior (even his father and his master both acknowledged that); I was contradicting the idea presented in the video that lacking martial prowess would diminish Sokka's worth as a character.
Bro his boomerang skills are otherworldly tho you can't deny
I agree. I would dare to compare Sokka to Usopp of One Piece, who is also a very capable warrior who can hold is own against mid tier opponents, but gets smoked by antagonists/main villains or other protagonists. His strenght however, is his superior intelligence and tactical mindset, that often saves the asses of the main characters (in OP's case the monster trio, e.g. Dressrosa arc vs Sugar). His skillset is not meant to take down overpowered villains, it is meant to evade something, most people would believe to be inevitable.
Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, Djenghis Khan and Napoleon were not the most capable warriors on the battlefield perhaps, but their tactical thinking was superior and that is what ultimately wins wars. Of course you need seasoned warriors with exceptional bravery and skill, but these things will only get you so far. One part cannot succeed without the other, you need both in order to establish dynasties.
@@DDDxxxDDDxxxDDD you know, until know I never even thought of comparing him to Usopp, it’s actually a pretty good one.
2:36 That's not a Mistake!
He was banish to search for the Avatar. Zuko took 3 Years to find Aang! 😄
How freaking convenient Zuko wasn't just sulking in some harbor but happened to be at the South Pole just as Aang broke free.
@@glanni it made sense, they massacared the Airbenders and thought they killed the avatar, according to the avatar cycle the next avatar would have appeared in the water tripe
@@SmashTheAdam Huh, interesting. You're right, and I'm surprised I've never seen anyone talk about that. I mean, it's possible I just missed the discussion or something.
But yeah, maybe Zuko started creeping around the Water Tribe when he realized the Air Temples were completely vacant.
It's still a little bit convenient he was close enough to see it, but it gives enough of a reason to make me turn a blind eye to the plot point.
Good catch!
I would rather have scenes of Zuko and Sokka training more frequently in swordfight, since they're basically the only ones to have a deeper knowledge of the craft, even as a background filler, or multi episode background gag you know? I wouldn't even mind if Sokka lost the first time this happened, and got progressively better as time went on.
Background sword training would have been amazing, and just have Sokka get progressively better! It's kinda sad we didn't get more shenanigans with Zuko in the show once they team up.
Wasted potential
No duh is Zuko, lol 😂 Even without Piandao, Zuko is the son of the Fire Lord, which give him top priority in the nation. He very likely would be trained with the best master, compared to Sokka who is like a 3rd class citizen compared to Zuko, and has only trained with a sword for a few months, he’s simply outgunned, or outsworded, outswordbended :3
Ok but that boomerang tho
@@adopted996 the boomerang could have defeated ozai in just one hit, too bad sokka never got close enough to hit him with it
if I remember correctly, Zuko was ''looking'' for the Avatar for indeed 3 years, but was only able to actually start hunting him down after a bit more of 2 years of his banishment.
Zuko spent 3 years tracking Aang. The whole Last Airbender series from season 1-3 is about a year so by the last episode everyone is a year older than they were at season 1.
It makes sense that Sokka lost because he is by no means an amazing hand to hand fighter, but he is in fact very creative. If he is able to use his environment and all the tools in his arsenal then he will absolutely win. Sokka is not a fighter, he is a thinker.
As Zuko once said, "That's rough buddy"
Zuko has formal training and plenty of sparring as well as actual fights, not to mention bending training in and of itself is a martial arts training as well and the footwork easily supplements the swordplay. Sokka has no formal training to show, save for the brief period in the Fire Nation, and even then it was decently explicit in the show that he wins mainly through outsmarting the opponent. In a ring fight, Zuko will handle Sokka easy.
I was going to correct him on the three years thing, but many people have beat me to it. Good job, everyone.
3 is correct, Zulu is 16, when he was 13 or 14 he “dishonoured” his father and was banished to into the avatar, it took some time before aang showed up
I have a really high hope for sokka on the 'swordbending' because why not? He is non bender after all. I wish he was a badass.
He is a bad ass. He just hasn’t received the same amount of training as Zuko. If his dad had taken him with him, and taught him how to fight, and then he fled with Aang and Katara on the day of black sun, his fight with Zuko would have been a lot closer.
Zuko should give him the blue spirit outfit and teach him how to be quiet. Then he would be badass
@@Loaderdani mhm
Sokka can boomerang bend (basically be able to hit anyone from the back of their head using his boomerang)
He is the weakest in a team of top tiers, but in no way a wimp. Not only did he humiliate Combustion Man, but Azula made messing with him a priority in the Eclipse.
2:31 Aang got out of the iceberg in episode 1, but Zuko started his quest to hunt the avatar 3 years before that, when he was banished and got his scar
I think when Sokka says “says the guy who unsuccessfully hunted aang for 3 years” I think it means because that’s when he was vanished and he was trying to find the avatar for all of those years.
This scene alone paints Sokka as a sore loser. It's an Agai Kai, but with swords--and yet he pulled an Admiral Zhou move.
I mean, Sokka admits that he still lost. But won the battle of words because he got Zuko to say "swordbending"
Sokka isn't a swordsmaster, he's a strategist, an improviser and probably one of the best quick-thinkers of the series.
Exactly!
He's also a swordsmaster though. In fact, I'd argue he's a martial arts prodigy based on how quickly he was able to improve with a single day of formal training.
Sokka is a strategist, that is his talent not his physical skill with weapons.
Zuko was trying to find and catch the avatar for 3 years. He started that mission when he was banished 2 mabye 2 and half years before he first saw the avatar. We just never saw it.
Zuko is a skilled fighter, but Sokka is a cunning warrior.
Zuko is many things, he's durable, skilled, surprising, sneaky, but he's not cunning.
This. Sokka gets his time to outshine Zuko in the Boiling Rock episode when he demonstrates he has a better understanding of Zuko’s war balloon than Zuko does.
@@notthephonz I mean, I would hope so, as he sort of designed it.
Sokka may be the goofster of the group, but Zuko is the true idiot.
Let me remind you in S1, at the end, where Zuko *challenged Katara in the middle of a FULL MOON, IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SNOW, SURROUNDED BY WATER EVERYWHERE.*
Dude set up his own faliure there. This isn't the only time that happens, btw.
@@echomikoart That was season 1 Zuko. Keep in mind Katara had never posed a threat to him until that point.
@@echomikoart I agree, Zuko has the big dumb. He talks so much about esoteric concepts like honor and destiny, but he's extremely impulsive and manipulable.

Zuko had been hunting the avatar before the show started... the three years is probably a reference to that fact.
Zuko was banished at 13 and he was 16 at this time. It had been 3 years.
my man's got netherite sword
But Zuko probably had months or years training with Piando, versus Sokka had two days. (Maybe) better equipment and creativity in a clear, flat, ring won’t be enough to make up for the significant difference in experience. At least in the vast majority of cases. There just aren’t enough opportunities for ingenuity and they won’t be striking hard enough to damage each other’s weapons.
Zuko had been hunting the avatar for 3 years, but only hunting hang for a few months
The whole series taking place about one complete year
ah cool, that explains how zuko got so good with swords
3 years is correct, it’s how long it would’ve been since Zuko’s banishment.
3 years is correct. During 1st episode of Book 2 Zuko and Iroh talk how it's an aneversary, exactly 3 years form Zuko's banishment.
I don't take the comics seriously, the characters are written in such a flanderized way... this one is no exception for me
Zuko was searching for 3 years, he was searching when aang woke up
The 3 years is correct he was banished by his dad when he was 13 and he’s 16 he spent three years looking for aang while he was still frozen in the avatar bubble thingy he does
Zuko's banishment & Aang hunt was Three Years long, the show was 3-4 months long.
The show takes place over one summer and zuko had been searching for aang for three years and only found out of his existence at the beginning of the summer.
3 years is right because zuko has been hunting for the avatar since before Sokka and katara found him
2:41 Zuko had been hunting for Aang for 3 years before he found him, from the age of 13 to the age of 16 (zuko found aang when zuko was 16)
Zuko got banished when he was 13, which is 3 years before the series, and he had been looking for the avatar that entire time.
I will get my degree as Soka got his swordman honor
2:48 Zuko has been hunting Aang down for 3 years, he begun his search as soon as he was banished from the Fire Nation.
3 years is how long zuko was searching for the avatar, since he was banished
Zuko searched for the avatar for years before casually finding him with the south water tribe, he was banished since 13 yo
2:50 zuko was exiled when he was 13 with the order to hunt the avatar. while he was 16 when aang returned, he had been actually hunting aang for that period of time.
Zuko hinted him for years before even knowing the avatar was out there
At 2:31, what sokka said was true, sure the show only takes place for about 6 months, but Zuko was banished from the fire nation three years before the start, if that makes any sense, so Zuko started to search for Aang way before the Gaang even knew each other
2:52 he was *hunting* him for 3 years, only chasing for a fraction of dat do
I mean Sokka was only trained for a weak or so. Of course he can't defeat Suko who was trained for years.
But I'm convinced that with the same amount of training, he could absolutely defeat Zuko in a swordbending-kai.
Not you too with the *swordbending kai* ☠
Suko
No he can't. Sokka won't ever be on the same level as Zuko.
@@JimJonesBG97 What makes you think that? Piandao called him litterally one of the most talented students he ever had.
Of course he can catch up and surpass Zuko in swordfighting. Zuko doesn't even focus on that in his training.
@@She-Devil94 Sokka is more versatile with the sword, but he certainly wouldn't have the physical prowess and skill to match with Zuko. If Sokka were to beat Zuko, it'd most likely be his cunning in adapting to the environment. Piandao clearly went easy on him. Sokka is not the type of guy to be excellent in fighting, but he is excellent in intelligent planning.
3 years is correct, Zuko was banished at 13 . Aang didn’t emerge from the ice berg until Zuko was 16 .
Sokka: hey Suko up for a little "Swordbending"?
Suko: Sus
Zuko was hunting the avatar prior to aang's awakening, he started his journey a few weeks after he was banished 3 years before the start of the show.
Zuko had hunted Aang for a little over three years. The 3 year anniversary since his banishment is mentioned at the beginning of Book 2 in "The Avatar State". Considering Aang found out about Sozin's Comet on the winter solstice and was told by Roku that he had to beat Ozai by summer's end, it's safe to say the series takes around 9 months
Zuko was hunting the Avatar since the beginning of his banishment before Aang's appearance
"... swordbending" -- "hey! There is no such a word!" --- "No boomerang in swordbending!" :D
Sokka's strengths lie in his ingenuity in combat, he uses creative and out of the box thinking to turn the tables on opponents in situations where they might otherwise have the upper hand. Zuko wins here because Zuko excells at 1 on 1 engagements where he can directly outmatch his opponent rather than outwit them. This practice format is directly in Zuko's favor.
This would be difficult to portray in anime form and still get the meaning across without devoting an entire episode to it.
I think sokka would basically be able to beat anyone, even benders (except the most powerful ones), if he has the time to plan properly.
He meant trying to find aang for 3 years because he was out at sea looking for aang BEFORE the show even started which was most likely 2 and a half years
Zuko was hunting The avatar way before he ever found out Aang was the real avatar so there is no reason "3 years" isn't a true statement.
He started hunting the avatar when he was thirteen so yeah, it was three years.
You forget that zuko was hunting aang before he got out of his bubble
The fire nation searched for aang for a hundred years, zuko hunted aang for 3
you need more subs my man
zuko was hunting for the avatar before Aang woke up
No no no zuko was banished, and was forced to look for aang for 3 years, it just turns out that he actually faced off against him in the third year
3 years since Zuko started looking for the Avatar, Aang was travailing with everyone since he was unfrozen for 7-8 month before summer
The 3 years thing is how long Zuko was banished and started his search for Aang, not how long the show was going for
I don't remember Sokka ever getting any Ws with his sword
Sokka barely got any Ws in general, man constantly got shafted
F for my boy sokka
That’s kind of the point of his character. He lacks combat training, so loses when he faces his problems head on, but he’s increasingly smart and humble as the story progresses, which allows him to bring out the best in others and find clever solutions to punch well above his weight.
F…
Sokka pulled more tail than the rest of the cast combined.
Zuko was hunting the avatar before Katara and sokka discovered aang in the iceberg. He was probably 2 years and like 6 months in trying to find aang when he saw the big light in the south.
Zuko was 13 when he started searching for the avatar and he 16 when the show starts
The events of the show take place over 1 year. But as the others have already said, Zuko was out searching for 3 years.
Three years is correct three years is the time of Zuko’s banishment so he was searching for Ang when he was still in the iceberg
The writers knew what they were doing it wasn’t a mistake Zuku hunted aang for 3 years before the events of atla
Zuko was banished from the fire nation when he was 13 and the 1st episode is him 16 years old.
Zuko has been looking for the avatar for 3 years. If you listened carefully to a few episodes, you'd pick it up
well glad they kept it out😀
Zuko was hunting the avatar for two years before the series even started
2:27 zuko was hunting ang for 3 years before he was out of the iceberg
Zuko had been hunting Aang since he was 13. Zuko is 16 in show. Also, the show takes place over the course of a year, not a summer. On the Winter Solstice, Roku tells Aang he needs to defeat the Fire Lord by the end of summer.
2:28 I mean in the events before that avatar The Last Airbender Zuko was 13 when he got banished, and the main show takes place 3 years later when Zuko was 16 so Sokka was right..
Great video! 10/10
Zuko has been banned for the fire nation for three years but aang as only been out of the ice for a few months
Zuko has been hunting for aang before aang even resurfaced
its a shame we dont see zuko use his swords more along with his bending.
It depends on the field. Sokka's greatest gift as a warrior is his ingenuity rather than his skills, so in a battlefield with more variables he has a good chance of pulling out a win. On an open training field however, there's little he can do to close the gap in skill.
It was his 3rd year when Aang woke up
Zuko had been looking for Aang for said amount of time so it is accurate as he was banished way before the first episode
That boomerang to the back of the head probably hurt as hell
Zuko was banished and sent to hunt the Avatar three years before the start of the series. He was 13 at that time, and 16 when he found Aang at the South Pole
