  • The Valkyries are arriving at Bethanie Theatre on 9 November, 5:00pm. Their war cries are booming in the distance already! Have a look at "Ride of the Valkyries", one of the most famous scenes from Wagner's Die Walkure.
    In what is expected to be a Wagnerian event for the ages, soprano Christine Goerke plays Brünnhilde, Wotan’s willful warrior daughter, who loses her immortality in opera’s most famous act of filial defiance. Tenor Stuart Skelton and soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek play the incestuous twins Siegmund and Sieglinde. Greer Grimsley sings Wotan. Philippe Jordan conducts.

    I don’t care if it’s silly they are riding planks. The music is amazing, the costumes are great, and the singers amazing and beautiful.

      What's silly is that they ride planks in Walkure and Brunhilde rides a puppet horse in Gotterdammerung a few days later.

    The problem with the way classical music is taught in schools, is it's completely divorced from its context: i.e. the actual play that it's the "soundtrack" to. It's like if 200 years from now, some teacher tried to teach children about Star Wars or Lord of the Rings just by playing them one background song from it, and then asked them to write an essay about what emotions we're supposed to be feeling from the music.

      Worst is divorcing Stravinsky’s ballet music from the ballets. I could not stand it for any more than three minutes. Then I saw the ballets and loved the music.

      Slight difference in your example. Lord Of The Rings is a literary series before the movies.
      Funny thing is you do not need to go so far into the future just look at the book banning of today, /cough "To Kill A Mocking Bird" /cough.

      Well I just found out about this through Brigitte Kaandorp and look it up like I would look up any movie. I am not impressed by incest and wouldn't know what kind of emotions I would have about that. And movies these days the best part is the soundtrack. Just like this play...

    • @mordechai-
      @mordechai- Год назад

      Well, Wagner's big piece of opera, The Ring of the Nibelungen, is a retelling of some of Norse mythology, which features a lot of women in Viking hats. Well, parts of it do, anyway. Overall, The Ring of the Nibelungen shows how the gods came into existence, conjured from our need for them.

      The Walkure (Valkyries) are flying through the air looking for the battle. They swoop down and collect the souls of the heroes who died in battle to bring them to Valhalla (sort of Heaven). There they will feast and carouse until Ragnarök, when the dead will come alive again and fight the giants to the finish, ending the world. If I'm not mistaken. That's the mythology, and here Wagner is imagining the dialogue and the set of events.

    Why couldn't they at least put horse heads on the boards? I know the boards are supposed to be abstract so we can imagine the horses, but they look too much like goofy playground see-saws to be abstract. This ruins the whole visual production for despite the strong musical performances.
