Have you noticed Gilbert goes straight into the Piano no music sheets etc and sings at the same time and no ear phone plug pieces like they HAVE-to now in 2019..this was RAW talent ....super singer and dead talented..GENIUS, i miss the 1970s so-so much ...people were more happy and the music was out of this world ..I know you cannot bring time back, but I wish you could. !
The true mark of a great singer is he who can sing live to an audience and sound the same as if he was in the studio or from the CD. GOS ticks this box.
Great song. I first met Gilbert when I was working in Weybridge in 1971. A friend told me he went to church in Walton-on-Thames every Sunday, so of course off I went to church the following Sunday. What a fab feller, I've loved him ever since, still go to one of his concert's every year and meet him for a chat afterwards. So humble and down to earth, and still writing new material. Kelvin.
This was a Norwegian No.1 hit in 1972 and made Gilbert OSullivan THE greatest pop star in Norway and Scandinavia between 1972 and 1974. Sure, he was massive all over the world but Matrimony was strangely enough not released as a single in the UK until 1976. Surely one of Gilberts signature songs. The festive Latin rhythms are so infectious!
'Matrimony' was #4 in The Netherlands in July 1972. So it will be THE Gilbert-song for Norway; comparable with 'Nothing Rhymed' in The Netherlands, 'Alone Again (Naturally)' in the USA, 'Get Down' in Germany, 'Clair' in the UK, and 'What's In A Kiss' in Spain.
@@robvandervaart6489 Thats right! If I'm not mistaken, wasn't Underneath The Blanket Go a Dutch no.1 hit as well? It stalled at number 30 in Britain. It was the follow up to Nothing Rhymed. Netherlands sure had great taste in music! I take it you're Dutch!
Yes, 'Underneath The Blanket Go' was Gilbert's 2nd consecutive #1 in The Netherlands, following in the footsteps of 'Nothing Rhymed'. We Dutch loved Gilbert's songs from the beginning; as - contrary to many, especially in the UK - we loved his cloth cap and boots.
@@RWillemM Same here in Norway! Well, I didn't actually experience it first hand, being born in 1980, but my father was a huge fan and the cap especially apparently became quite a trend here in Norway! I discovered Gilbert OSullivan as a 15 year old in 1995. My father actually played me a cassette of his 20 Greatest Hits in the late 80s but I didn't pay it any further mind. It wasn't until I went to Greece for a holiday in 1995 with my grandparents that I got deeper into that particular cassette. I played it all the time! While everybody was out enjoying the sun there I was stuck inside the hotel room playing that darn Gilbert OSullivan cassette! It was his voice that got to me first. As a Norwegian 15 year old I had a basis understanding of the English language but obviously Gilberts lyrical details flew by my completely. Then there were the brilliant melodies. This was before I discovered The Beatles so I didn't know of Gilberts drawing from Paul McCartney as a writer back then. The cassette I was playing on repeat didn't have a cover either so I was actually getting into and loving Gilbert OSullivan WITHOUT seeing his unique image! a year later in 1996 I turned on the TV at home and lo and behold there was a commercial for The Very Best Of Gilbert OSullivan CD. Here it is at last! the announcer said(well, he said it in Norwegian: Endelig er den her), of course and my senses were alerted! It was the first time I've actually seen Gilbert! Images from 1971, cap, short hair, trousers and suit too small, and I LOVED it! Naturally I headed straight to the record shop( we used to have loads of records shops here in Oslo in the late 90s/early 2000s, now there's sadly one one left) and picked up a copy of that CD. Its still the CD I reach for the most. I've bought every single studio album and as many compilations I can find and yes, I DID get heavily into Yhe Beatles later on and I do love their music a lot( especially Paul McCartney) but even Sir Paul can't compare to my beloved Gilbert OSullivan! Gilbert visited Oslo now in September of 2021 and I brought a friend along to see the show. In later years , I've noticed a slight weakness in Gilberts voice so I was a little worried that maybe his golden years were behind him but I didn't have had to worry. His vocals were pristine, actually in the best shape I've heard in him in years! It was a low key show, with Gilbert on keyboards and a guitar player accompanying him. That was it. Must admit it made for an intimate cosy show. I love Gilbert with a band backing him on bass guitars and drums, vocal back ups and even a string orchestra but I loved this just as much. I rarely get to talk to proper Gilbert OSullivan fans. As a 41 year old man I wasn't even born when Gilbert enjoyed his phenomenon success but there IS an awakening put there! And why wouldn't there be!? Gilbert OSullivans songs catches the human emotions at their very core. His songs are densely packed with witty lyrics and beautifully crafted melodies and people are always looking for authenticity. God knows how bad the general pop rock music has become with a dreadful artist being replaced by an even MORE dreadful artist. I use Spotify and RUclips but I'm playing CDs and LPs on a daily basis and although I've got quite an extensive collection(15 000 albums) all the records I cherish the most are the ones by the wonderful Gilbert OSullivan!
Somehow I've never before come accross this wonderful, passionate story of yours! And... I totally agree, "Gilbert's songs catches the human emotions at their very core. His songs are densely packed with witty lyrics and beautifully crafted melodies and people are always looking for authenticity." Hopefully you'll see him back in Norway, with band, orchestra or just his guitarist Bill Shanley. In the meantime I suppose you enjoy the fan-pages on Facebook.
This was recorded in February of 1972. Gilbert OSullivans then brand new single, a little ditty called Alone Again Naturally was released to spectacular success, reaching the Top 3 in Britain and more importantly topping the US Billboard charts for 6 weeks. As for the marvellous Matrimony, it was only released as a single in certain territories in 1971/1972, reaching number 1 in both Norway and Holland. It WAS however, released as a single in the UK in 1976 but unfortunately it didn't register.
Wow, childhood memories of early 70´s. He had such amount of talent, I wonder what happened to him? I bought his LP´s in 1972, 1973 and loved them. The last LP I have he released in 1980, "Off centre".
In the summer of 1972/3 this song was a major hit in Holland, years later I bought the record and found it contained all kinds of lovely songs. Super entertainer.

gilbert has a wonderful talent, and he seems to really be enjoying himself. artist today can really learn from artist like gilbert from the past. stop taking yourself so serious. besides artist from the past had real talent not like the waste land of today performers with the talentless rappers who do nothing but steal to sample. and the many group of the month so called rock artists. way to go gilbert i celebrate you and your
I can only just about remember G O'S as I was v young in the early 70s. I think he's been underestimated as a songwriter over the years. Like all the best songs his hits still stand up well today. Can't say the same for the dress styling here. He reminds me of Rick Mayall in The Young Ones.
This is just so damn good. Crazy good song and good show too. Have to say it, but they don't write something that good nowadays. Or do they? They don't have to, you can take something more mediocre and make it sound good with digital sound effects and stuff. So why bother making masterpieces like this. And... who would write a song about a happy marriage nowadays? Love it!
+graeme lister The guy still is a great songwriter and lyricist. See his legacy on gilbertosullivan.co.uk, gilbertosullivan.net and his latest gem "Latin als G!".
What a monumental talent; and I love the nostalgic image. Pop in those days could be such fun. But the important thing is the sheer genius quality of this man's songwriting. I had this song on the classic "Himself" album, on cassette.
Gilbert will be performing in the Royal Albert Hall (London) next Monday, October 26!!! Definitely he'll do Matrimony!!! (As well as all his other classics from the early 70's till present)

I'm going to see the Osmonds next Thursday (21st-July-2010) where they will be with Leo sayer - Les McKeown (lead singer of the Bay City Rollers) & David Essex @ Wembley Arean (U.K). I won the tickets, last Thursday. Doesn't look like Marie or Donny's going to be there. Wished I'd known about Gilberts concert at the Albert Hall, I'd love 2 see him as well. Him & Leo remind me a bit of each other, hope I get the chance 1 day, I love his music.
Look out for the forthcoming new album of Gilbert (titled: Gilbertville), due to be released in May 2010 and capturing a.o. the super song 'All They Wanted To Say" (which is already on RUclips).

Ray, I totally agree!!
taught how to play piano by his best friend, Rick Davies who went on to form the the group Supertramp.
He composed the song, the music, played live on the piano while singing and dancing to it . So good. 👍

And he wrote the great lyrics!
Such a class act at such a young age. My fav Gilbert song.
Great musician and performer...Legend...
My very best to him. A great songwriter, singer and musician -Matt in NC USA
cant help but smile when he smiled responding to the crowd on the beginning
Great, really Great, there has not been another like him in his style since the 1970s

Something of a signature tune for Gilbert, it was strangely only released in certain countries in 1971/1972, reaching No.1 in Norway.
Love the way he's laughing at the begining :)
Love this song - our super talented Gilbert, he’s amazing
My favorite singer of all time! My celebrity crush for sure :-) Love his folksy presence & mannerism. His songs just lift up a dreary day anytime!
Lovely Gilbert so talented, thanks for the memories ♥️❤️♥️❤️♥️👍
Me fascina! Gracias Gilbert!
He's brilliant!!
One of his all time classics!!
#4 in The Netherlands, June 1972.
