  • Irish singer-songwriter Gilbert O'Sullivan in his work-room, singing and accompanying himself on the piano. He chats about how he composes his music, his percussive style of piano playing, weird chord progressions and his tendency to put ridiculous lyrics on top of beautiful melodies.
    This clip is from Sounding Out, originally broadcast 6 March, 1972.

    One of the greatest (underrated?) songwriters of the past 60 years. Melodies and lyrics - sublime. I love his work and hope he comes back to Aussie for another tour ASAP.

    Even then he was a bit eccentric and he hasn't lost that mystique. He pops up every so often with a new release. 🇮🇪☘️👏

    Its satisfactory to notice Gilbert OSullivan is gaining commercial success these days. If people in general would recognise this man has been releasing stellar music for the last 40 years......1970-1980 is Gilbert O'Sullivans golden commercial successful years but the years 1980-2015 brought consistently marvellous music as well!

    This is fascinating. His approach to writing and playing is so unique but he explains it all in such an open and articulate way. A genius.

    Hes like a happy roy keane lol Just that look sometimes maybe just me..... Apart from that this is amazing to see how the best start out and how they are inspired. It all starts from youth and that passion, how i hate being older and missing those inspirational days.

    A 25 year old Gilbert OSullivan. He's already released his debut album but that point and it was a great success. Even more spectacular chart success would follow in 1972 and 1973.

    • @AlDunbar
      @AlDunbar 2 года назад +4

      One thing has changed though. He is well past the "oo, minor chords, how great" and "oo seventh chords, how great" stage. Within a relatively short time he started putting out music with very subtle and brilliant chord progressions with major 6ths, major ninth, minor sixth, diminished and augmented chords.
