I was a bus monitor luckily the worst i had was a sub driver backing into the awning at the school. But also had a close call at an intersection a car flew across and missed the front of the bus by just inches and crashed into a fence.
Most automatic transmission on heavy diesels don't have a park, unlike cars/pickups. Aluminum and steel have high melting point. And odds are the fire will be electrical, if not something related to the engine. It takes time for heat/fire to work it's way to the transmission to "burn through it". It'll be slag before gravity will get the bus to roll, plus, the tires will blow and go flat before the aluminum case will melt.
