If you want to see the most skilled drivers in America…I nominate the Boston Fire Dept…as well as the SF guys. The oldest parts of Boston…streets so narrow only a bike has enough room. I watched them in amazement…!
Nice!!!!! Watching these guys respond to calls in San Francisco and dealing with drivers nowadays is crazy. Future firefighter right here and soon to be taking classes and tests to be one next year.
No secret that a firefighter’s uniform makes you look taller, thinner, and definitely more handsome. Ask any woman… I once watched 4 fire guys walk into a grocery store to get sandwiches. Cashiers were all women. Every line stopped while the cashiers watched the view. It was so noticeable that the customers…more women…began to smile…and chuckle.

love those red n green lights on the truck front end, like Chicago FD. Also love the SFFD laid back approach…they don’t come out of the chute with the Q screaming and horns non-stop…they ease on down the road. Respect.
San Francisco actually has green lights on the front end of their truck companies only and that’s due to the heavy fog that the city experiences; that allows a chief or even other incoming companies to know that that company should get the front of the building as that is a truck company. Chicago has the green lights on all apparatus due to historical traditions involving maritime law whereas San Francisco has it for positioning on a fire building.
Very slick production! Nice to see a Ferrara, ALF and Spartan all responding out of house. That was weird with the rescue coming out pumper's bay door. Sad if they cannot get funding to fix doors. Love the code lighting on Ferrara. Very effective. Old ALF rescue needs updated rear LED warning lights.
If you run 30-40 calls on a single day you won't run for everything like an amazed volunteer who has one call per month. They still get the job done in time.
Nice video and great looking rigs. That middle bay door has seen better days, better have city services come out and the black eye. Nice looking house. Stay safe brothers and sisters.
Which specific equipment are you referring too? Hazmat, high angle, swift water rescue, O2 truck for SCBAs...? It also depends on what's in that particular area which is where that equipment is stationed
In the US and Canada the designations are E-Engine P-Pumper W-Wagon (wagons can only have a driver and carry hose and a tank of water, or can just be another name for engine or pumper) (engine, pumper, and wagon all mean the same thing in many departments), rarely there are 2-piece engine companies (a wagon and a pumper travel everywhere together - Washington DC used to have this system) T-Truck L-Ladder (same as a truck) S-Squad (can be heavy rescue or a smaller utility vehicle) R-Rescue (some places this is a behemoth heavy rescue squad truck, and other places it is an ambulance) A-Ambulance (usually basic life support) M-Medic (advanced life support ambulance). Tanker- large tank of water on a truck. Buggy or car (chief's vehicle--buggy is a holdover from horse-drawn days, as is wagon).
My only concern with today's emergency services is that they walk , without urgency , Taking their sweet time! I mean you don't have to run, but walk at an faster pace! Our goal was to be enroute within 2 minutes off receiving the alarm, fully geared up! Not running, but a brisk pace. And we trained on that with drills, especially when we had new comers Time is precious, Every second counts, All lives matter! I am a 3rd generation, retired firefighter/ paramedic from Gary Indiana Please live life responsibly
As a 38 year firefighter captain we move with a purpose... no one piss around... they will get left ...whe don't wait unless someone decides to get on the truck.... his ass would get his first verbal warning the second time corrective action..third time..time off without pay. Next would be termination.
Does SFFD Engine 1 sleep? Maybe on Sundays, but any other time probably not. Engine 3 never does. SFFD Squad 1 is also very busy, one of the busiest in the US actually. I can't remember what firehouse it is, but there is one on the edge of the Bronx and uptown Manhattan that is the busiest for the FDNY; because of their position, they get 25 to 30 calls a day.
I live in S.F. and know the department and that station well. It’s in the top 3 of busiest stations in the City, and in the top 20 in the US. About 85% of its calls are medical, as they are in the heart of the largest homeless/drug OD populated parts of the City. It’s a very tough house, with the near constant trauma they have dealt with over the years. Maybe 1 death per day that they respond to, and dozens of OD’s and other trauma, like the first call where someone wanted to jump off a building. Happens regularly. As to specifics, that door was indeed heavily damaged and it took awhile to repair, as it was a custom made door for the station. Also, the engine and ladder are 5-8 years old, but that is the reserve rescue, as their much newer rescue keeps breaking down …most new rigs have a bad time in S.F., due to the wear and tear from the busted streets, hills, etc. Electronics, busted frames and body mounts, etc. Older rigs just hold up better --that spare rescue is maybe 30 years old now, and runs just fine. The station near my home has been running with a reserve pumper that dates back to 1993 for close to four years now, and it runs like a champ. New rigs are crap, because they wind up buying usually from the lowest bidder, without factoring in downtime…the troops hate it…☹️ Very traditional department, full of amazing history and culture. Has had its ups and downs with racial tensions over the decades, but it’s pretty calm in recent years. And it doesn’t hurt that the average firefighter pay is in the $175-$180K range - and it was recently reported that a goodly number are in the $200-250K range due to overtime needed to staff the department. Not a bad gig..😊

Not all the time :D San Francisco really was outstanding, rarely waited more than 30 minutes for a call. But in many of the other cities I visited it sometimes took hours even at the ""super busy"" stations :D But thank you very much! :)
That's why I said wacky and not just good, you guys get unbelievable things like in this video and then proceed to be totally let down by stations that should be a breeze! (Not to mention bonus stories like in Olympia) You two are probably the best evidence that there's no rhyme or reason to spotting! 😀
Oh they have... Rescue 1 is a reserve rig and their new-ish Ferrara Engines just look very old-school with the red lightbars. I like the way they've designed it.
Wasn't the first call-out - somebody gonna jump off a roof - straight outta Dirty Harry? The Fire Dept turns up but then calls for Inspector Callaghan. Why ? "Every dirty job, they call for Harry!"

I'm guessing the bells are ornamental? Pity, really, because I'm ancient enough to remember when bells were used and they were actually quite effective!!
Hey, actually they still can ring the bell! I think I also caught it on camera at another station :) - This is super effective in Areas with a lot of pedestrians

I can't confirm that. Apart from the gate, the station is quite modern. And unlike some other states I've seen, California doesn't have to hide. Impoverished citizens, drugs, slums and crime are a big problem all over America, which is due to an economic system and politics that need to be questioned. I think it's propaganda to constantly badmouth California.

How many miles does each station cover?
Do those firefighters who work on land? Also do duty on the fire boats as well?
SFFD has a fire boat, Fireboat Phoenix.
They are generally assigned if they are smoke divers...they have to have training for fireboats
thanks for the video,,,it a shame that the station has a messed up door. Seem like that should have been a priority to get fix.
sometimes other calls take priority-like the first one

Ah sehr interessant! Ich hoffe auch sehr für die Feuerwehrleute dort, dass das Tor bald repariert wird... :D
Do they have mutual aid to other areas?
Kind of. SF uses a different size hose and hydrant hookup. there are big brass adaptors on the rear bumper of the SF engines.
What station has the special equipment in it?

if T is for tiller/truck whats the designation for a Water Tender?
Probably WT. But I don’t know if SFFD use that category:)
