  • I Quit my Job to go Sail around the World.. and in this video we'll tell you how much Sailing Costs us!
This was one of the hardest parts for me, figuring out how much money was needed to go Sail the World. So from the very beginning I knew I would make this video, so I could help others with their budget planning for Sailing the World.
We share all the costs we had in the first full month of living on our boat.
From Moving our Stuff, to Food and Drink, Boat Upgrades, everything!
If that's not enough, we also post detailed articles of our monthly expenses on our Patreon page. You can find it here:

Enjoy episode 31 of the Dutch Sailing Family!
We are on a huge adventure to explore the planet with our sailboat, a Lagoon 420 Sailing Catamaran. One of our first videos was a full boat tour when we considered buying it, have a look if you'd like to know and see all: • We Bought A Boat - Ep....
I must admit, some of our inspiration comes from Sailing La Vagabonde, Sailing Zatara, Sailing Holly Blue, and World Towning.. although we've been talking about sailing around the world for about 3 years now.. it suddenly is coming a lot closer, and fast!!
If you are interested in sailing catamarans, or the cruising lifestyle, we love to talk about it, so leave us a comment, or connect using one of our other social media profiles, we are on Facebook, Instagram and on Patreon for the biggest fans! Find the links below.

This was a nice video! I could see a monthly sailing costs segment becoming super popular on the channel! A lot to learn and uncover. Was definitely surprised to hear about how high the Marina cost is in Turkey. With inflation and what not would have expected it to be under 1000 euros. Anyway, safe travels!!

Hi Anas! Yes you know since we came to Turkey in the summer last year, the prices have risen dramatically. Not only in the marina but also outside, on anything really. Our marina neighbours tell us only a few months prior, life was so much cheaper here. House prices have gone up so much, they've had a huge influx from Russia buying property. But since the earthquake they've dropped a lot again as well. Lot's going on here!

Congratulations reinier for all the expenditures and incomes that you had and spent in the Roxy sail boat. I cannot imagine that every month you could spend. You have a very good horoscope and good memory of everything that you have done and made. Congratulations and hats off to all your memories.

Hi Amit thank you so much! I could not have done this without my notebook for sure! I kept records to see if our finances are working out, and also to be able to share this info to help other people that want to do the same. Before I started, it was not easy to get hold of this kind of information!

Reinier very good man you could do so many things in such less time and in less than one year in the boat. Also congratulations on your boat journey from Cyprus to alanya and also from alanya to Cappadocia and from Cappadocia to Greece and to so many other places in turkey

Well maybe it looks that way but all we did was sell the house we had, and buy a boat instead. We do feel very lucky to be able to do this, given all circumstances. It's a dream come true!

Thanks for the details - I don't see me quitting, but retirement is within sight so hoping to join the world cruisers someday. Subscribed and will be watching your adventures. Being detail minded (I not sure a majority of viewers are), I'm happy to see more of these detail type videos in the future to see how expenses go. Maybe something that compares your last 6months/year to the first 6months/year on the boat? Is Starlink in your future? Have a great adventure!

Hi!! Thanks a lot for your message and following along. Yes I do plan to share more about the cost. I was wishing there was more like this before I started the adventure, so that's why I'm doing this now.
Very exciting to be closer to retirement so you can sail away!! I hope you'll make your dreams come true as well!

Starlink, perhaps. They've just changed their cost structure so I will have to review that closely. Initially in the Mediterranean we will be using simcards and an access point..

got my dog groomed for 45 euros, then my wife needed a bikini wax for 90 euros, then I renewed a magazine subscription for 20 euros. Suddenly I remembered I needed to take the family to see a movie and we had popcorn and drinks. The total cost of going to the movies was 90 euros. What if anything does all of your discussion at first have to do with sailing expenses? Just asking for a friend who was interested in watching this video when it was about sailing costs.

Was your 420 originally electric propelled? The first catamaran I ever saw was the 420 and I've been obsessed ever since.

Hi Geoff! From what I have found this boat was diesel powered from the start, I believe about 70 420's were built as hybrids and then converted. Interesting concept which was probably ahead of it's time..!

Marina costs are something to recon with.
And I don't see another way to secure the boat.
It appears to me that you need to secure the boat in order to explore inland.
Then you need means of transportation to explore inland (rental, public transport, etc.), not to mention hotels etc.
For those - like me - that explore way beyond the coast. This would apply for every country in the Mediterranean.
I can't see leaving the boat on a mooring ball and risking not finding your launch and/or its motor when you return from a week or two of exploring inland.
In places like the Caribbean and French Polynesia it's probably sufficient to moor the boat and explore via day trips.
I haven't been able to resolve this issue.
In any case, I wish you well and fair winds.

    • @DutchSailingFamily
      @DutchSailingFamily  Год назад

Yes you're touching on an issue that is something worth considering when you think you want to tour the world by (sail)boat. Leaving it behind on anchor or buoy is not for the faint hearted. As we grow into this lifestyle it might get a little easier, but for multiple day trips, I don't think we'd put her anywhere else than in a marina. Which will always add to the bill significantly. But of course along the coastline there are plenty sights to be seen, for which the boat is ideal. Part of the appeal for us is also the direct access to the water and it sports, like kitesurfing, foiling, SUP and swimming.. so we are very excited to enjoy a full Med season ahead of us now!

Re marina costs. Here in Greece catamarans have a premium charge, whether it’s on a town quay or in a marina. Usually it’s x 1.75 but sometimes 2. Accordingly in August (well June to Sept) you would expect to pay between 95 and 120 euros a night in a marina and around 25 to 33 on town quays. That’s why bays are so full with boats anchored off! Hope to meet you on the high seas one day, if you get around this way.

In the next two weeks our time in Turkey is up and we'll move to Greece. But we'll probably enter in Kos or Samos. Thank you for this info, it's a good help!

    I bought a 2008 Lagoon 420 last August in Ft. Lauderdale Florida….
We have one of the Hybrid models…. Is your hybrid or diesel?
Anyways, feel free to contact me anytime. I am sure our boats have similar issues…
