George Lazenby’s departure from the James Bond franchise after On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969) has been a topic of much speculation over the years. However, the real reason can be found in this biography: “Creative Autonomy and the Curse of the Velvet Tuxedo”, Lazenby, a young and ambitious model actor, reportedly found the strict production environment of the Bond films stifling to his creative instincts. According to a 1971 interview with The London Spectacle, Lazenby expressed frustration with the franchise’s formulaic approach: “The Bond producers wanted me to be this perfect gentleman spy at all times-even off-camera. But I had ideas. I wanted Bond to surf, to meditate, to eat a proper Aussie meat pie instead of caviar. They didn’t like that.” Which hints at a clash between Lazenby’s free-spirited personality and the rigid branding of the Bond franchise. Then there was the clash with Sean Connery’s Legacy. An excerpt from "The Spy Who Wasn’t There" by film historian Livia Penrose suggests that Lazenby felt overshadowed by Sean Connery’s towering legacy. During the promotion of On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, a quote in The Daily Post Lazenby said: “I’m not Sean Connery, and I won’t pretend to be. Maybe Bond doesn’t need to be Sean Connery anymore.” It fits the narrative of an actor wary of constantly being compared to his predecessor. Lazenby’s decision could also be tied to the shifting cultural tides of the late 1960s. Cultural critic Marjorie Gable posited in an article for Reel World Quarterly (Spring 1970): “George Lazenby turned down the tuxedo because Bond, as a concept, didn’t fit with the counter-culture ethos. Long-haired men in denim jeans weren’t looking to sip martinis-they were looking to dismantle systems and shag birds who didn't shave their armpits.” This analysis portrays Lazenby as a man of his time, eager to embrace roles that resonated more with the burgeoning anti-establishment movement. A playful story from The Martini Diaries by Bond biographer Hugo Windmere suggests that Lazenby’s disinterest was sparked by a wardrobe mishap during a key scene: “George reportedly went off set after being asked to wear a velvet tuxedo that made him ‘look like a lounge singer.’ He later joked to friends that the tux had more screen presence than he did.” This paints Lazenby as a man torn between the expectations of a global franchise and his own creative aspirations. Hiring Lazenby. Although Lazenby received much support from Broccoli and Saltzman, he had a less easy ride from the board of United Artists who were none too keen to see him take over the mantle of Bond. On 7 July 1968, test footage of Lazenby and Rigg had been sent to United Artists in New York - and the were less than impressed by what they saw. On 23 September 1968, UA's head man David Picker even flew into London, desperate to tempt Connery back into the fold. But Connery was adamant that he wasn't coming back - EON and UA had made him a star and Connery was now a major player, capable of picking only the roles that interested him. And at this moment, Bond simply didn't interest him at all. It was only reluctantly that UA accepted EON's recommendation that Lazenby be given the part (MI6 Production Notes - On Her Majesty's Secret Service).

Obviously, many years have passed, but Connery and Moore still sound basically the same as they did fifty years ago. Not George though...?
At the request of the producers, George changed his voice slightly for the film, working to sound more "English." In real life, his voice is a little gruffer and Australian. Also, for a third of the film he is dubbed over by George Baker.

Connery gave strong performances from '62-'65 but I just feel like he had nothing left to offer after thunderball and the franchise felt tired. George would have added a lot more liveliness go the series since he's so much younger and actually WANTED the role of Bond!
Connery in Y.O.L.T. is the character of Bond in O.H.M.S.S. An agent tired of his job, finds happiness in love and marriage. In D.A.F. an aged and heavier Connery with this performance is perfect, as Bond after Tracy's death.

Back in the day Connery quit because the studio had the poor bastard cranking out almost a film per year.....a Bond film per year! Can you imagine the physical stress despite the pace of a movie per year or year and a half? It wore him out physically and mentally.

other fella"
To anyone wanting to watch the whole documentary. It's streaming on Netflix now in the states.
He's actually my favourite bond. OHMSS is the best one.
What was the bigger mistake - hiring Lazenby to play Bond or him quitting?
Quitting the role.
Is there any place to watch the full documentary? or is it coming out on DVD at any point in the near future?
He was discovered in the Fry's Turkish Delight advert by Cubby Broccoli.
I guess Sir Roger Moore was willing to take the gambit with his extended contract in the Bond franchise.
Who here after George Lazenby retired from acting
Hey guys George is my great uncle on my mom's side of the family
So you are James Bond Jr then i guess? 😊
Yeah. Pretty much. I'm related to a lot of cool people.
But he's probably the coolest
His Recent Outburst Are Acceptable.. he Supposed Never Need to Apologize To Telling a Truth...
Those Offended fuckers Are the Weakest Human Beings Ever..
Great clip! Can't help wondering whether to take some of it with a pinch of salt or not, but still...
His voice sounds unrecognisably different from how it sounded in the film.
Great story!
My favorite segment in this documentary. It's kind of sad what happened to him. He would of been Bond for quite a while.
What happened ?
@@liakossagounis0078 his agent talked him out of a seven film contract pretty much.
@@sebastianfitzptraick7395 damn. Looking back I know that’s gotta be a huge regret of his. Sometimes the best advise is our own and we should just trust our gut
Might be the best of the series.
man how old is he... i've never seen him old before. and then i'm seen him now... wow! he is such a legend... ^_^
I meant.. when James Bond rescues Napoleon Solo from Russian Gangsters. Autocorrect screwed up my previous text. Lol !
WOW i always thought that he was died after his first bond movie =O
He was such a good bond!!!
does anyone know the name of the song used as the backing to timothy daultons interview?
If you think Geroge Lazenby is the right "actor", try to imagine "on her majesty's secret service" with Sean Connery or even Roger Moore. This man fooled everybody on the production and we have to bear this drifter. With this screenplay, direction, spporting actors and WITHOUT this man, On her majesty's secret service would be the best bond movie ever done.
Arthur Prado OHMSS would be awful with an aged Connery or Moore.
OHMSS is one of the best Bond movies, in my opinion, and actually, I thought Lazenby was exceptional. I've been a Bond fan from the beginning and after Connery, George Lazenby is my favorite.
The untold story .. in 2 & 1/2 mins .. wow.
Lazenby was a great Bond. :)
Lazenby was an excellent Bond, too bad he only did one and no sequels.
awesome story
OHMSS is the best Bond film ever made and George Lazenby did a great job, Timothy Dalton basically played Lazenbys Bond in his 2 films .
folks I'm going to be honest about this todays Bond ain't got the same soul I like that old time rock and roll still like that old time rock and roll the kind of music just sooths the soul I ever mention about the days of old with that all time rock and roll.

Super story!!!!!!!
Actually, Broccoli DID give him a chance...It's George (that idiot) who screwed up it up.
I think it was more down to his agent.
I personally Loved latzenby. An OHMSS is one of my favorite films of all time. Personally I saw him as an upgrade from connery's sad performances in YoLT and DAF. I feel like if George had portrayed Bond in those 2 flicks they would have been much better.
Lazenby Rules as the first most realistic kick Arse Bond Period... Before Dalton and Craig !!
"Now pay attention, 007. I've always tried to teach you two things. First, never let them make you do a second movie."
He was a great Bond , shame he din´t make more movies as 007. His manager at the time was a dick and advised him badly.
What a CHAD
I'm a lifetime Bond fan and I love this guy but he says that all he wanted was to be Bond, night and day, I'm gonna be Bond....... THEN he walked away after the one movie.
Don't get his logic. Just don't.
Youre not only an actor mr Lazenby... youre a spy
I like OHMSS and George. That O'Rahilly fella can go to hell for taking advantage of him
Diana Rigg did not like Cathy Gale's leather jacket and catsuits on The Avengers(British TV show). Emma Peel ended up wearing "nice, chic" clothing on the show.
Back in the day Connery quit because the studio had the poor bastard cranking out almost a film per year.....a Bond film per year! Can you imagine the physical stress despite the pace of a movie per year or year and a half? It wore him out physically and mentally.
so what happened with Sean? and why was Dr. no was killed off so crappy?
Well he just turned 73 last month.
I wish he’d stayed
To bad he didn't care about doing a second Bond film 🎰
George if I didn’t know better I’d say you were originally a Queenslander .. the doco/ movie was better than any Bond film because it showed how you got the biggest part out there with no acting experience just pure hutzpah
Well... He got back in Diamonds are Forever, it was just a question of money.
great story
