many of y’all misinterpret when I said “people are calling it gyaru, nigga that’s black face” as me saying “gyaru is blackface”. I didn’t say that. it’s not blackface. I said they were wrong for calling that instance of blackface in that anime (where said character literally makes her skin darker to look like a black person) gyaru, because it ain’t.

Yep, even now it seems we have a good ways to go before we can sort out all of these weird barriers when it comes to black people and how we’re perceived by the broader anime community. What’s strange is that white ppl can always cosplay an asian character no problem, but it’s suddenly an issue and inaccurate when a black person does it.
Just weird stuff like that can really make you feel alienated

For those that are confused: he called the scene of the anime blackface, not the term Gyaru, aka the defense anime lovers tried to give to that scene of blackface

    • @SwiftDreamer
      @SwiftDreamer 2 года назад +229

@eloquent•etiquette the thing is, the scene being referred is an anime girl literally trying to physically look like a black women by wearing blackface. If the gyaru fashion isnt necessarily blackface, in the context of that pic, that is blackface, though it could be argued that the scene in question isn't "minstrel show" blackface. The way black people are sometimes drawn in anime be rubbing me the wrong way though

You all there across the ocean need to learn that Blackface is something exclusive to America
I mean, if a black cosplayer would paint him/herself white that would not be an issue
I mean, if someone was cosplaying Megamind and painted himself blue, would that be "blue face" and racist somehow?
How is that any different with a different color, like black?
I understand the history of "blackface" in America is highly connected to racism agains black people, but it's just paint.
Get fucking over it, if someone wants to cosplay a black character, and paints him/herself black, thats just trying to be more faithfull to the original depiction
There is nothin inherently racist or bad in other way about it.
Such a cosplayer is not using the black pody paint to riducule black people, like blackface was used in America
They are trying to look more like a character, maybe even look more like your race, how is this seen as a negative those days, i will not understand.

@@Domel23 blackface isnt just an american issue my guy. Racism towards minorities is experienced everywhere especially since the world has been westernized to adopt american views. I'm asian and lives in east asia and i can confirm that hatred towards black people is widespread here. Whiteface (or whatever you call it) isnt an issue because theres no offensive stereotypes of white people and they were never oppressed to the point that they were laughing stocks just because theyre white. I am ethnically Indian and from the US and I find it hard to let myself cosplay (or dress up for halloween) unless the character I'm cosplaying has a similar skin tone to me. I think it's me trying to avoid anyone looking at me and seeing me as 'a joke' because I already feel somewhat vulnerable in cosplay. Part of this is that I'm trans, and that's a whole other layer. But also, I feel this when I have no reason to think the people around me would harass or bully me. At costume parties with just close friends or other more intimate events, I still find myself avoiding dressing as light skinned characters because somewhere in my head I've started to believe it too, even if I don't consciously apply this to others.

Im a white cosplayer whos been cosplaying for two years with mostly closet cosplays and I'm not great at styling wigs to look like the characters. Most characters I cosplay aren't white and yet I have never EVER been told the character isn't my race so I can't cosplay them or that I don't look like the character, I have seen black cosplayers who have made the full outfit down the tiniest details for an anime character and without fail if this post gets any traction they will get comments calling them "uncanon" or not a good fit for the character.

I disagree on this but my personal view on cosplay doesn't align with the idea of cosplay only being about the quality of the outfit.
I dont care for cosplay at all unless the cosplay looks uncannily like the character. Like its brought to life.
So while I won't be racist towards a black person cosplaying as a non black character, I also won't acknowledge them and just instead scroll passed.
I prioritize the likeness of the cosplayers face over the outfit because anyone with enough talent or disposable time and income can put together a very nice cosplay outfit, it takes sheer genetic luck, coincidence and some skill to pull off a convincing portrait of a character.
The outfit just completes the look.
People that go out of their way to attack black cosplayers are a problem. But some people have different reasons for liking cosplay, and they shouldn't have to pretend a cosplay is good to them if it doesn't meet their personal taste or reasoning for liking cosplay.
Simply put, I don't care at all for the process, creativity, creation, enginuity, design or piecing together of a cosplay. I am not passionately interested in the hobby.
I just care about real people looking EXACTLY like the characters they're cosplaying because that's the part I find cool. Bringing something fictional to life.

As a Japanese person, the thought that white people perceive a lot of anime characters to be white never occurred to me until very recently. A lot of times in anime when a foreigner or white person is shown, they're depicted with stereotypically accented speech/butchered Japanese, big noses, and a defined brow ridge. Not saying I agree with those depictions but I've always thought because of those distinctions, the standard characters were all Japanese.

It really just depends on what the creator wants to portray. Many anime characters are intentionally made to look more White - Naruto for example, Kishimoto himself said that if it was live action series he should be "American" due to his blonde hair and blue eyes (I'm guessing thinks every white american looks like Chris Evans). It's a thing that in the US people call "Coding", where basically something that looks or behaves a certain way is meant to be representative of something or some group of people, even if they don't actually look like it, although a lot of the times it's something that more or less only exists in fan interpretation (ie Many Black Americans claim Piccolo from Dragon Ball is black because his personality and attitude is similar to many adult black dudes, despite the fact that he's not even human and is green).

I think anyone can cosplay, whoever they want, regardless of race or gender. It's so stupid that people can't just let people of colour dress in whatever costume for whichever character they like. And what I find even more stupid is that I've seen people praise a white man dressing as 2B (without the skirt) or Sailor Moon. I've seen/follow black cosplayers and I only think two/three things: "They look amazing, they are beautiful, I wish I had the confidence to wear that." That's all, but that can be said for any cosplayer because that's what I think.
The people going off about saying a character is white, correction, about 90% of anime characters are Japanese, so if we go from that logic, they aren't white either. And before people go off and say that Japanese aren't black, look up Naomi Osaka, a JAPANESE BLACK tennis player. So that argument holds no water, black people exist/are born in Japan, they're not made of magic. (Also, yes I know he mentioned the race thing but it's still bringing it up again, and again to hammer that home) Just let people cosplay who they want to cosplay.

So, why even decided to type that out in the first place, what did it even accomplish? Just think about it. You told a black cosplayer that's just having fun, their character doesn't have the same colour as them and for what reason? No normal person would just say that and not feel some type of way about that persons skin colour, because if you didn't you wouldn't care about the fact the character isn't back and would just say something positive. Its not that serious, anime characters are not white and people don't say shit about that when white people cosplay as anime characters. Cosplaying is a celebration of people honoring their favorite shows that may or may not impacted their lives, it’s for everyone. Like the gentleman in the video I have seen other black people be under attack specifically when cosplaying characters come up and it’s gets tiring for people to always bring race into this when we just want to have fun.
Also, You don’t seem to understand context to well. Your right in the sense of pointing out the fact that someone black is a factual statement. However, in the context of someone cosplaying and you pointing that out that “their black” which means 90% of the time their implying the character your cosplaying isn’t black, so you shouldn’t be doing it, that’s rude.
To imply that someone of colour shouldn’t even be doing it, except for characters of their own skin colour is pretty hurtful and ignorant. So because a character isn’t gay, disabled or whatever that gay, disabled or whatever person can’t have fun?

Around the time this video came out, the videos from black creaters I saw were them talking about this issue and being shadow banned.
As a white person, I didn't have much of any people of color at all on my for you page until I straight up searched for it to get it into my algorithm.
And, as someone who is into engineering, THIS is a big issue with learning ai and algorithms. It occurs in every place of learning ai and algorithms I've seen. These aren't some "perfected, this is a balanced view that includes everyone because a person isn't directly involved, solutions", it's a "boiled down to make it stark as day and night that racism is very real". The algorithm not showing people of color on my for you page without me actively looking for them is the algorithm seeing because more people interact with white creators, we show them more white creators. The pushback and the reactions you're describing from the app algorithm are straight-up racism in the algorithm. There was an experiment done with learning ai where it demonstrates it really takes everything directly. Because on the trolly problem, a person who put in their preferences noted they value cats, and so the ai valued cat lives far above human lives. This is the same thing, different platforms. Some other robotic flaws I'm aware of is motion sensor sinks and facial recognition ai. Because of the lack of diversity included in making these products, they don't work for the people left out of the creating process. This is a VERY common problem that happens in many areas and is why diversity in the development of products is so very important.

Its pretty sad how the same people who be telling black people to stop dressing up as asian characters are the same people who are white and dresses as asian characters 🤡
And the thing is theres not much black or dark skinned anime characters so idk why they would want people to cosplay as nothingness.
Also I 100% know for a fact that the creators of these characters dont give a flying hell about a black person cosplaying as their asian characters. If anything they'll be grateful that people love their characters. Its like theyre trying to speak up for the creators and claiming it as the creator's opinion, only for their own benefits and not the creators :/

It was partially because she’s the only black female character I know people can recognize and the only one I know. I purposely avoided characters like Hinata because she’s Japanese and I didn’t want the anime club going for my skin tone for pale people. I’m really interested that people are addressing that.

As a black girl who's really into j-fashion, I wanted to clear up the gyaru thing a lil bit. I think the tan skin thing has more to do with rebelling against Japanese beauty standards of being pale. Gyaru in general is based off of a rejection of social roles where women are expected to be quiet and demure and all that. It involves big hair, over the top outfits, loud makeup and other things that also fit in line with that theme.
Gyaru were able to create their own style and use it to build community and a distinct subculture. It's actually really cool and interesting, but it's sorta starting to change and tone down from what it used to be. There is a lot of American influence in gyaru, but I see the tanning thing as sort of a grey area that could use more discussion and research.
