It's interesting to think people would think marceline/princess bubble gum where "made gay" in the new series when there were references to them having a romantic relationship for most of the old series, they were just literally closeted because they were on a kid's network... and that's kind of like representation in general, it's not that there aren't diverse people in media because they don't exist, it's just that they aren't allowed to exist in that space.
Drawing attention to someone's race, gender, or sexual orientation to make them stand out is never a good thing. It makes you think about their 'otherness', where before you were just enjoying that person as a, well, person. I've caught myself at least once realizing that, after a specific characteristic of someone was pointed out to me (look! he is black/look! he is gay) my brain focused on that one characteristic, and it detracted from my enjoyment, because my brain wanted to stop thinking of the person, and instead think of 'that black dude'.

Earlier today I was reading reviews for season 5 of This Is Us (great show, I really recommend it) and the reviews gave me brainrot, just a ton of right wing dumbasses saying how it's all left propaganda, one of the characters is in a relationship with a non-binary person, and she always has to remind her parents to use they/them pronouns for them, I can relate to this, I have a friend who is non-binary, I also always have to remind my parents to use the correct pronouns. This Is Us covers every possible subject, whether through a minor character, or a major plot point (those same right wing people also were annoyed at COVID being covered, which is stupid, the show in that season was set in 2020, and the show takes place in our world with constant references to happenings within our world) because it is a show all about life, the life of the main family in the show, the lives of the families sprouting off of them, and life in general, so people who think it's annoying This Is Us having lots of representation obviously just haven't watched the show, or they're just using the show as an excuse to be queerphobic and racist.

I partly agree with this? Because tbh personally it comes down to the genre for me. @ALLAN LOUIS JEUNE the three different actors represent different spider men/Peter Parkers. The upcoming MCU multiverse events (the next doctor strange movie) will likely involve them all if briefly. Also, any one of them could be bisexual or pansexual because men who date and marry women and are still attracted to men (and the various other genders and sexes) exist. If you don't understand that maybe you should be asking more questions of reliable sources on the subject and making less ignorant statements about it.
I've said it once, i've said it a million times. If you're going to represent, then go ahead. Just make them an *actual character.* Don't make the representative trait ridiculously important to their character identity, or worse, the *only* part of their character that stands out, lest you run the risk of it feeling like it is shoved in your face a ton to the point where it feels like flanderization and inevitably becomes distasteful. This does *not,* however, mean that said representative trait can't be part of the story in some way. Case in point: Wainwright Jakobs from Borderlands 3. He's a gay man, and at one point, you have to rescue his fiancee, Sir Hammerlock, a returning character from Borderlands 2, to progress the story. However, him being gay is not the core of his character identity. Arguably, two of the defining moments about him are when he kills a bunch of baddies when you first meet him, and again when he shoots at one of the main villains of the story, calls him "ratboy," and taunts him all while escaping him. How do people see him? Badass with a shotgun, humble in his own sense, and quick-witted with a sharp tongue. As a straight guy, I consider him one of the best characters in the game. Or, as your thumbnail shows, Miles Morales. The core pillars of his character all relate to his personality - not his skin tone. We know him as a kid who's more intelligent than he thinks he is, somewhat awkward, a little bit of a delinquent but has a good heart, and highly emotionally sensitive, NOT "Black kid who's also spiderman." Arguably, even him becoming Spider-man is a secondary trait, serving mostly to drive his character arc forward. And, to put it bluntly, just let people make what they want to make. Don't be against representation, but at the same time, don't go bashing people for stuff that isn't PC. Let creatives be creative.
Nah, there's nothing wrong with a character's sexuality or gender or whatever being an important part of their character. People hold up "casual" rep like this all the time, and while personally I enjoy that shit too, stories about a gay kid coming to terms with their sexuality, (or something like The Hate U Give that focuses on police brutality and the issues of black people) are also perfectly good rep. They've both got a time and a place, just as long as neither one makes the characterization entirely their identity (by which I mean: just all stereotypes)
@@maevem316 That's... what I said... Once again, if you want to make it part of their character, that's fine. Just make sure to have them be a well balanced character. By "ridiculously important," what I mean is that there may be other pillars, but the representative trait seems to overpower the others. The same goes fore every character trait in general. If you have one of the pillars seem to overpower the others, your character has a high risk of seeming flat, with the other pillars seeming like afterthoughts. I did say that there was no reason the representative trait couldn't drive the main story along.
@Carolina Hernandez I really couldn’t care less if the character was remade and their sexuality, body type, or race was changed in a remake of a show, if the character is an alternate version of a pre-existing character with a different sexuality, race, etc, or if the character is completely original. It’s still good representation as long as it doesn’t promote harmful stereotypes.

as a POC I always feel odd because I've never had a problem relating to straight, white neurotypical characters. Matter of fact my favorite character in any sorta fiction ever is Kiryu Kazuma from the Yakuza games. 6 foot, lean, Japanese man and I've never related to a character so much. I am in no way arguing against adding different people in fiction. I just never got how skin color, gender, sexuality stopped people from relating or feeling out of place. Afro Samurai, a black man, but his skin color had no part in helping me relate to him, it was his actions and personality that did. I won't argue for less diversity, cause it's just more appealing to not see the same thing but at times I feel some writers use it to compensate for lack of character depth. It's not everything that has come out but it sure does happen.
Honestly same. I love seeing characters that match my gender and sexuality and wish there'd been some in the shows I watched as a kid, but I never *had* to match a characters race, sexuality, or gender to relate to them, and I never understand why some people apparently do. It's a really great feeling to be able to share similar experiences with characters, but those experiences have never been limited to just someone's race, gender, or sexuality.
I personally want to see different people because as a black person I am tired of the typical "struggle" black content uses. Diversity as a means to an end. Don't pigeonhole your own story trying to appeal to everybody. Find what works and make it work, it's like cooking you can eat steak and strawberry ice cream. Yet you wouldn't want that ice cream on your steak. Just make the narrative work if you have some "diverse" shit in there good. Also another problem they do is spoil the damn "diverse" aspect be telling romance plot aspects before the show is even seen. Again personally I want them to NOT use romance for once and see what they can do.
I completely agree, as a white male I’ve found so many characters that were male and female, white or not, gay or strait, that I relate with in so many ways that I see myself in them. My problem is characters written TO be gay or TO be black, etc. when you can make a good compelling character who is a minority of some kind. Ripley from Alien is a bad ass scientist who is also a woman, Falcon is a patriotic hero who happens to be a POC, Marcie is a bad ass vampire musician who happens to be bisexual. My issue I think comes from a character who’s core characteristic is to be a minority because it seems very disingenuous imo.
for me, i felt the same way, but i think that's partially because i HAD to emphasize with people who werent like me because... there just wasnt anyone who actually looked like me. and then i meet white ppl who are like "i cant watch shows with black people in it because i cant connect to the story" and im like.... there is not even one human element to the story you can connect to? i have to spend my whole life emphasizing with your existence but you cant connect on ANY level???????? none?
Writers are reluctant to write neurodivergent because unless they have some INCREDIBLY THOROUGH UNDERSTANDING OF IT which most writers don't, they are going to get criticized for writing "inaccurately" or something similar. Most writers don't have good understandings of neuroatypical people because they don't know enough people with any one given condition, and most if not all writers aren't psychologists who would have studied this stuff or come into close proximity with neurodivergent people. That's why the most you see are more common neurodivergence--anxiety and depression, ADHD, less-extreme autism, PTSD, OCD, *maybe* bipolar, though most "bipolar" characters aren't well-written, hence why writers are reluctant to try. Things like schizophrenia, more hard-leaning autism, asperger's syndrome--these ones writers shy away from or are routinely criticized for writing them because they don't write them well and either misrepresent their symptoms or just misrepresent them as people. We need to gain a better understanding of mental health and the differences between neurodivergent conditions before we can expect to see more neurodivergent characters.
@@randomperson8571 Thing is I feel like a lot of this also comes down to not treating neurodivergent people as their own people instead of a list of symptoms. Personally the best way to write it that I’ve noticed is to just write a character with these traits and let people put it together and then confirm it if everyone is in agreement. That’s what I’ve found the most productive, Entrapta is the best example for this. Like give them other traits besides being neurodivergent and your set
@@randomperson8571 youre inaccurate about a few things neurodivergencies arent mental illnesses. Mental disorders can be remedied, cognitive disorders and personality disorders cannot and are therefore neurodivergence. Also saying things like "more extreme autism" and "hard leaning autism" comes off in a weird way. It stigmatizes the idea that only lower functioning autism is "real" autism. Yes there is a spectrum and lower functioning obviously need the most assistance and understanding, but higher functioning autistic people still face a lot of the same issues and still don't have their representation either. Asperger's is also catergorizes closer to higher functioning than lower functioning by the way, that is why they added it to the ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder)

You don't get it. Puritans whine about representation, and then try to force representation where it doesn't make sense. AND THEY DON'T EVEN SUPPORT THE CONTENT AFTER THEY CHANGE IT!
It's basically putting your political beliefs in to a media/work that is unnecessary. Ex: say if an artist is well known for their drawings of music artists, and all of a sudden they started putting hate symbols in their, but the work itself has nothing to do with that political belief. At worst it can be annoying.

Younger me watching AOT and seeing Ymir’s love letter to Histora gave me the courage to come out to me friend. I know it’s cheesy but seeing that little bit of representation made me feel so great and made me realize that I’m not alone, I loved both of the characters and I remember breaking down after watching it. I hate when people make other peoples existence political. You don’t walk up to a POC or gay person on the street and say “wow no need to get all political on me existing like that”
I think this video hits the nail on the head; diversity isn't political, it's real life, and it's not strange or odd to make characters in fiction be reflective of real life. There's a fine difference between representation and just tokenism, but so long as being a minority isn't their main/only personality trait, I don't see a problem. My biggest pet peeve is people asking "why do they have to be X?" Why not?; they don't need a reason to be X, they just are (just as people in real life are).
People having an issue with old characters being rebooted differently is fair, but I do think the loudest complainers are coming at it through bigotry. I would rather see under represented groups get their own fresh franchises built for them with them in mind than all these reboots of beloved properties get rebooted. Exception would be with the comic universes like DC and Marvel because that's an element already built into the framework through different universes and constantly different character designs.
Yeah I'd love to see stuff focused on the forgotten heroes and villains in Marvel/DC. Seeing John Stewart (one of 2 black green lanterns) in the Justice League was really cool and honestly all the other small heroes like Vigilante, Star girl, Mister Terrific ect. The Justice League and Teen Titan shows were really cool for seeing all those side characters you never see outside comics.
But to the alt-wrongs, there's no winning for losing. Anyone new would just be regarded as "not as good enough" or even the slightest "carbon copy" of their beloved, and then seen as an attack of that which they've co-opted and aggrandized to be correct (unknowingly politically). Those whiners always want to be the center of attention, just like all children.
@@ProjektTaku like I said, there's multi verses in both major comics DC and Marvel. They change everything about the characters from gender, to names, backstory and race through the years. Just being true to the source material you can't actually dismiss wholesale like that. Plus those projects can stand alone like the 2019 Joker. I'd love to see them adapt the Batman universe where Bruce dies and his mother and father become the Joker and Batman respectively, that would be a fvcking dope and it's a different universe anyway, so their race doesn't matter to me.
I agree with you but considering how movies attempt to come off as "the" main universe like the MCU the movie goers might take that as an attempt to replace the character(s) they grew up as the new official version. That's where I see spiderverse getting it right because they come out the gate showing both visually, narritavely, and in every other way possible that this is a new story that isn't against even rewriting bits and pieces of even Miles' own story. If more movies could be like that, showing a film that is clearly their version of a franchise and not just a simple reboot where they make only small and seemingly unaffecting changes that do nothing. Take making Peter Parker Bi, is he just Bi to be Bi so they don't have to use MJ or is this aspect about himself going to lead to new narrative beats in his story? Will he meet Gwen Stacy, will he have fallen in love Harry Osborn? So many possibilities possible but most of the time this change serves no other purpose besides a writer's desire when they think "this character isn't (insert adjective here) enough, let's change that."
The best part about the quartering's "she ra is woke garbage" video is that he doesn't even have an argument. He scrolls through Twitter for 9 minutes because the show wasn't even out yet. I HATE that guy. 😠

Personally, I think any so called “straight” character can be revealed to be bisexual later. I don’t know why people think that it’s retconning. It’s just something new.
Yeah, as long as it's handled nicely, it's pretty realistic too. I had no idea I was bi until I was in 8th-9th grade, and some people find out much later than that!
Someone who is straight for a vast majority of their life isn't suddenly gonna like the same gender. After a certain point in your life you've usually are set in your ways. Peter( an example ) who has never ONCE shown homosexual tendency is suddenly attracted to guys? Even in real life I'd find that too drastic a change. There'd have to be some major trigger to warrant such a change in character. Mind you this Peter(MCU) still hasn't shown any homosexual tendencies so it'd be weird that he suddenly was interested in dudes when there hasn't been any prior hints that that is the case. No one really cares if someone is gay as long as it's not the only thing that the character is about. However that's usually how the media handles it they just show how gay the character is and nothing more.
@@tigeruntamed6036 Have you ever heard of heteroflexible? Not to mention in the MCU, given the blip, he is still a teenager and plenty of people don’t figure out their sexuality until college. Some people don’t understand there sexuality until there 40s. It’s not a big deal.

I always find it funny that the characters people like to throw a fit over the most getting a sexuality change (cannon or headcannon) are usually never confirmed heterosexual? like they could very easily be bisexual, pansexual, etc. Like there are the rare exceptions that actually confirm it but it's fairly rare for a character to declare that they only like the opposite gender/sex
Its because many people are hetero, and when you relate to a character for so long then tehy suddenly just change it into something you don't understand, it instantly breaks the conection, making us hate the authors and then, as we are in social media, with no real stakes in opinions and no real concessions, the bitterness that some of us have will leak inti others and create the issue and those on the other side will fight back and as it cycles it just became larger and larger, until this diversity movement essentially became a political movemnt. Drawing attention to someone's race, gender, or sexual orientation to make them stand out is never a good thing.

Plus I just think changing a characters race in general is pretty weird as it messes with iconography, if a characters look changes too much, it’s not even the same character anymore. Might as well make it a different character, would prefer it.
I partly agree with this? Because tbh personally it comes down to the genre for me. Like if it its fantasy, it doesnt really matter to me because the cultures, races, regions and religions are fictional so real world reflections dont really apply. Like... if a space pirate looked filipino (I'm filipino) while the rest of the crew were an assortment its cool since they dont truly share our real world experiences. If it's a real life setting then yeah theres definitely some iffy stuff there.
But yeah straight up with our own character identities!

I now know that as an author diversity is important, especially in media geared towards younger audiences. Because of this, I am 100% ok with people who imagine my characters differently or have headcanons of them that divert from the source material. These characters are as much yours as they are mine."
It could've been fine. Just be honest to your audience Joanne.

I couldn't care less about the character's race, it doesn't add or remove anything from the franchise and theatre is theatre. I can't deny that they are similar but haven't you wished to capture your love like you had for Harry Potter again but without being the same?

Now, this is some truth, zero lies here homie.

It’s still good representation as long as it doesn’t promote harmful stereotypes.
@Carolina Hernandez They aren’t making Peter Parker gay, it’s an alternate universe. “Spider man” is just a title, it’s not one specific person.

People rlly just attacking someone for having an opinion they don’t like in this chat.
as a POC I always feel odd because I've never had a problem relating to straight, white neurotypical characters.
My issue I think comes from a character who’s core characteristic is to be a minority because it seems very disingenuous imo.
for me, i felt the same way, but i think that's partially because i HAD to emphasize with people who werent like me because... there just wasnt anyone who actually looked like me. and then i meet white ppl who are like "i cant watch shows with black people in it because i cant connect to the story" and im like.... there is not even one human element to the story you can connect to? i have to spend my whole life emphasizing with your existence but you cant connect on ANY level???????? none?
Thank you now this is what I'm talking about I'm also tired of the black struggle.
I really want more neurodivergent rep ngl, it sucks that I am barely represented

I think this video hits the nail on the head; diversity isn't political, it's real life, and it's not strange or odd to make characters in fiction be reflective of real life. There's a fine difference between representation and just tokenism, but so long as being a minority isn't their main/only personality trait, I don't see a problem.

Those whiners always want to be the center of attention, just like all children.
no I don't want to see batman or superman become black because "representation" I would much prefer if they stayed white

Corrrrrrrrrect
its because like people in real life, characters are automatically assumed to be straight. even if their sexuality is never confirmed nor denied.
Look at im not starfire, first the fans assume the worst about the comic because of the bitterness, amd the signs of its being woke, then the author fought back, insulting those who insulkted her and even those who are real fans, then it escalates to the release where every people taht wants to shit on it, were mostly proven right with the addition of the writer seemingly shitting on the original starfire, when jts just bad, not the worse, its just bland, and then this just continues on and on and everyone who doesnt really follow just shuts in the diversity mivement because its seemingly just a bad mivement that wants to take evry bit of happiness the fans has fromthem. Then we all die from wars them teh end
Because most people are straight.
That's why i loved the gay reveal at the end of Paranorman: the big dumb jock is a total stereotypical "Jock" stock character and has the hot cheerleader crushing on him through the whole movie, to which he's completely oblivious and ignores, and when she finally asks him out he says he'd love to see a movie with her since his boyfriend loves chick flicks.

My favorite is when it's a medievalish fantasy stories, and they complain about non-white people being "not historically accurate", when a) it's fantasy, b) there have been vast trade networks and full-on empires across all of Afro-Eurasia for *millennia* and c) none of those people complain about potatoes (or corn or chocolate or pumpkins) existing in those same settings, even though those 100% DID NOT come to Europe until after 1492.
