Thanks for the great video. It did help a lot to get to know the Etrex. I just came back from a walk in Ireland around a Lake in the Caha Mountains. I used my phone in airplane mode with an App, Outdooractive with offline maps, and the Etrex 32x. There was no marked trail and you could barely make out a path, so the GPS (Phone or Etrex 32x) was very helpful. I did not use navigation mode on either, just followed the track. In the end I did reach mostly for the Etrex, because I just needed to touch the control stick to wake it up and check if I'm still on track. I was also less afraid it might get damaged in case I dropped it. I did use the phone only when I needed the bigger picture and because the Topo Maps gave a better overview about the steepness (one small part I had to climb down) of the hills I was walking up and down. End of the hike the phone was down to 70% from 95% (after ~4h). Etrex showed still all battery indicators (used eneloop rechargeables). I noticed that the phone stopped recording my track at some point, where I had taken a slow motion video of a waterfall. Despite the fact that I had changed the settings for the app not to be stopped. The App probably got dropped from memory because 120fps slow motion video vneeded it. Photos did not stop the recording. There were 2 other things that I noticed with the phone: 1. Compass was off even after doing several times Figure 8 to adjust it and it has electronic compass 2. Altitude was off by ~ +50m, phone has altimeter as well, but I'm not sure it is used by the App For me that proves that dedicated navigation equipment still has its place. But it is nice to be able to use the bigger screen and quick zooming of the phone when needed for overview. BTW: The phone is a Sony Xperia 5 IV (which has issues with compass according to online resources that I checked after the trip)
Hi Frank, we do recommend calibrating the Altimeter on a regular basis to improve accuracy as per this link to a Garmin Help Article - support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=0GfwIf4O0m0idLumS54798, we hope this helps
@@ukgpstraining Thanks for the tip for calibrating the altimeter. I will definitely do that before the next hike. But what I meant was that the altitude reported by the App on my phone was off and I wasn’t sure if the App makes use of the barometer of the phone or if it only uses GPS. Anyway in the meantime I tried a couple of Apps regarding the altitude they report and it’s a mixed bag, some like komoot & locus map report the correct altitude while some like outdooractive and osmand are always about +50m above. I would rely on the Etrex as it is made for navigation from a start.
Great video I have used an Etrex 30 for several years. Did a 13 km bush hike the other day out for 8 hrs and I always use trip computer to keep a watch on my minutes per kms walked. Because it was a hard walk i did 20m kms over 4.5 hours moving time. Bit foot sore after that one.

G'day from Melbourne, Australia. I am waiting for a eTrex 32x to come to where I live. Should have it tomorrow or next day...I've used etrex GPS for years the etrex 10 isn't the first one but that's another conversation. Great review and video. I'm planning to hike the Australia Alps Walking Track in the future a 650km track here in Australia and this GPS will be awesome for that big trip,
A very helpful tutorial on how to use the Etrek 32x. I have just completed my first made route thanks to this guide. I do have a couple questions and it would be helpful if you could assist me with them. How do you get a satellite view for your maps? Great video. I got an etrex32 recently. I assume I can just show up at a location and record a track and save it without preparing. Im not sure of the setup involved. Most instructions are pre planned routes. I want to set a waypoint and just walk and record until i get back to my car.
Malcolm, yes, you can just record 'your track'. In the video I go through this at the start and then to save it at the end. Hello mate. Thanks for all the info. In July I’m walking the pyrenees Houte route (HRP) it’s 850km. I have the gpx file to upload but what gps device would you recommend for that? Would the 32x do the job? And would it store the whole route? Thanks George
George, thanks for message on the answering machine, i will give you a call on Monday, but the Garmin eTrex 32x would certainly do the job for you - Lightweight, great on batteries and you can just transfer the .gpx file onto it.
May be a daft question - I have transferred some walks via GPX and they only show up in tracks - I cannot locate the route function to use the system you did on this video

Many thanks for your question. you could just 'pause your track, change you batteries and then restart it. But, on a multiple day hike, you could just save a record of each day i.e. save the track for that day. Then, if you choose, you could join them together in Garmin BaseCamp. I hope this helps.
