Thanks for also showing things you thought you did wrong and explaining why you thought it went wrong (even though it still looks great in my opinion). Refreshing to see somebody not pretending to be perfect but just showing the process of learning as well.
This whole study was a learning process for me, and I thought it was important to express that journey in this video! Learning never stops, and I’m glad you enjoyed watching!
one reason why i never wanted to try watercolor is that i thought i couldn't accomplish realism like i can do with oils, this video just showed me otherwise. your art is truly beautiful!
I think you are hard on yourself. You paint beautifully. It is inspiring me. I was without any doubt of successful painters in art world, a young talented art student. My mother and then my husband blocked me at every turn. Refusing to let me follow my destiny. Confusing. Now they are long gone from Earth and 2022 I began painting again. This time I began teaching myself watercolor. With help from people like you I am progressing. My passion has always bern light, shadows, reflections. Thank you.
Hello! I really appreciate you taking the time to write this comment, and I am happy to say that I have learned to be easier on myself since making this video. To create art as an adult is a great accomplishment, and I am glad that you have been able to return to painting for yourself! Learning never stops and I am rooting for you. Thank you for your kind comment. ❤
The running commentary while painting is honestly more instructive than any tutorial, because as a beginner I get some insight into the thought process of your art (which I can apply in different contexts) rather than just being told what to do for one specific piece. Super helpful, thanks!
You are wonderful for sharing your talent and inspiring so many of us! At first I didn't want you to downplay your beautiful work by saying you had goofed or should have tried something else, but then I realized that you are helping walk us through something that is not easy, and that makes you an excellent teacher. I'm 70 and recently decided to renew my interest in watercolors. You know how zoos sometimes have gorillas and other animals paint pictures that can then be sold in the gift shops? Sadly, that's what my paintings remind me of. I have been fighting cancer since 2012 and I guess it's finally going to win. I recently agreed to hospice care, but I'm going to enjoy painting until they carry me off, and you are going to help keep my paintings from being sold at zoo gift shops! Thank you, Noelle. :)
Thank you for your kind comments, I’m glad you understood the purpose of this video. I’m always learning and experimenting, and I wanted to show that there are a lot of trials and errors in painting, so don’t worry yourself about trying something new and becoming discouraged. Enjoy yourself and have fun painting! Don’t concern yourself if your work doesn’t look like another artists work; paint what pleases you. Pretty soon those zoo animals are going to be jealous of your art, and maybe even some people too!
I am a beginner..and out of all the sky tutorials...I truly feel this is the best "learning to paint clouds"..I have watched...thank you for sharing your talent
clouds are my favorite to look at and hardest to capture with paint. This video was by far, the best exercise video I have ever seen! What you did well , what you learned from your "mistakes" are so very helpful! Thank you so much!
I struggled with watercolor clouds, this video showed exactly what I went through. It’s nice to know talented artists struggle like people who are new to this medium. Thank you!
Totally awesome. As you may agree to someday. I think that using bigger papers helps a lot. But I use acrylics. It also helps to accept the cloud you get instead of comparing it to the idea in your head. To most viewers I think you painted the perfect clouds. It also helps to study how clouds are formed, where and why. This way you can form them as they are formed in nature. Basically they start forming at a certain height and rise upwards and drift away. But after a while they are reshaped and wind and rain tear them apart. For acrylics you mix in 75% of white in the clouds farthest away and make them merge with the sky. Then add more contrast/ drama and clear paint and formations to the closest clouds. Also daytime clouds are harder to paint than evening clouds. Hope this helps and that all ppl start painting big skies. It's really healthy.
This is really helpful, not only for me but for others as well! I agree with everything that you said. Bigger art surfaces make it easier to paint large washes so it’s easier to control details. Understanding the science behind a subject is helpful to draw/paint something too! Thanks for commenting!
This is so wonderful that I will be watching the video over and over. I was stunned at how each cloud suddenly transformed into the real thing. I am inspired to work on clouds myself.
I did enjoy this, it shows us amateurs that even professionals need to practice. The last sky, no,6, looked so much better once you put the trees on. Amazing.
How entertaining, and a very fine example of why we do studies and how satisfying they can be. I learned a lot from your willingness to share your mistakes and notable successes.
Your honest approach is so refreshing. Informative yet not too self critical. We are our own worst critics, we artists. I did a small piece recently of a lighthouse with the sky a heavy mix of blues and grays. I was frustrated while painting and though I felt it was overworked at the time now the more I look at it, the more I like it. We must trust the process and let go of control knowing a piece comes out the way it is meant to come out, then we move on to the next one. Thank you for sharing. Blessings to you!
Recently discovered my long buried hobby of water color painting. Came across the idea of painting cloud but didn't where and how to start. I really love this video because you talked about how we might approached for better result so we can prevent making the same mistake. Thank you for sharing this video!!
I tried a cloud study in arches cold pressed - it was tough! I've fell in love with the strathmore 500 grade paper (the covers are mostly a plain off white colour, not the one with the thistles!). You've inspired me to try sunset clouds! I've only done cumulus and storms so far - the colours are scary! Lol
I like painting and watercolor's my most favorite medium of art. I love doing landscapes, painting plants and flowers. This study process will surely help me do better in doing my artwork. The selection of colors and the stroke techniques are done very well. Thank you for sharing us your thoughts and talent!
I appreciate your candid honesty in this. I started watercolors during this pandemic (having really never painted anything else before minus the odd acrylic, I am not a painter lol) and it's so disheartening when someone does a beautiful painting and you can't replicate it despite following the steps. Now I know even great artists like you probably also struggle or spend a lot of time on getting gradients / overworking the paper, they just don't talk about it. It is so, SO so invaluable to hear the pluses and minuses so as to not lose faith or confidence in my watercolor ability as a newbie. Thank you!!
I am barely a beginner in watercolor and acrylic painting…I appreciated how you explained everything you did whether it be wrong or write. I thought your clouds were beautiful and the clouds on the bottom middle were my favorite! Thank you!
Thank you for sharing your thoughts while on process. Makes us all think we’re normal that struggles do exist and that doesn’t mean you’re not going anywhere, there’s always room for correction and improvement. You are so real and humble
Really appreciate how you talk about your learning process. Makes me feel like it's not just me struggling sometimes and your clouds came out phenomenal. You got a new subscriber for sure.
I like the last try most, at first I couldn't work out what I was looking at, but then you added trees and it all just came together and looked so realistic and beautiful!
As a beginner on watercolor i find It very cool the fact that you show a realistic process of your work , its quite useful to see "mistakes" and how to harness them for a still better outcome!
This has to be the greatest watercolor painting video I have seen in this month (if not year!), I love how it stays true to its title: "study". You did an amazing job but most importantly, it's clear that you learned a lot and shared your thoughts about it without being demeaning to your work. As someone who struggles to experiment and throw myself to try new things because of the fear of not turning the way I expected it, this is truly inspirational and really admirable 💙 I look forward to watch your other videos!!
I really loved this video. It was so lovely to watch each of the studies come together. Relaxing for the viewer, but probably not for you as you problem solved all the way through. You ended up with a beautiful result and a helpful book recommendation. Thank you for posting.
Thanks so much! I think problem solving is useful when learning any skill, but since uploading this video several years ago I have learned to be kinder to myself. I’m glad you enjoyed it!
This is still to this day my favourite “I AM gonna do this!” Video lol every time I feel myself getting like “I can’t…I’ll mess it up…I’m not sure” I watch this cause honestly I think your skys turned out BEAUTIFUL! And yet I can see moments I’ve had myself where I’m like “oh god I’ve messed this up” and didn’t keep on like you did, so didn’t get the amazing results.
What a fantastic tutorial. Thank you so very much for your video. It is giving me the ambition to try the clouds again because I was a failure at my last attempts. Great job. Phyliss
I really love how you "saved" the last study - the trees in the foreground make it look like the clouds are meant to be slightly out of focus, and in that context they look perfect!
Really helpful video. I have been suffering from art block recently, but watching this, now I am craving to paint some clouds. 🥰 Thank you for such amazing tutorial.
Thank you so much for this video. I’m a self taught painter and I literally don’t have any knowledge about the techniques to use or anything, but I take reference pictures and try to recreate them. Most of them turn of fine, but I’ve been struggling quite a lot with clouds. Now I know the reason why, I was always trying to use white paint for clouds and it never turn out nicely. I’ll try this method for my next painting.
I'm diving back into watercolors after years and years of a hiatus and this was a great inspiration! I loved the cloud study and am tempted to do my own now!
Thank you for a wonderfully instructive video. I am JUST starting watercolor--and landscape--and struggling with clouds. So your cloud studies with comments were wonderful.
Your drawing process is interesting and relaxing! Thank you showing us the different method in drawing different types of sky !👍🏻🙏🏻💕🏞 I want to have a try next time and take your ways as reference!🌟😊🌻
Nice video. I really think the trees and birds on that last panel made that sky scene look great. After peeling all the masking tape off, that whole thing looked cool. Cheers!
i admire your ability to eye the clouds in your mind and then get them to look so perfect. Takes a lot of patience and not getting easily frustrated :D
That was fantastic! It’s funny how one artists’ idea of what “looks good” & what doesn’t, is what makes art so great! All of them were fabulous, but I thought the last one, (which you thought was a “mistake,”) was one of the best, in my humble opinion! 👍🏽❤️
I actually really love the last one, although I agree that the context of the trees really helped with the image overall! I like how soft and our of focus the cloud looks, and its size is quite dramatic.
Thanks for sharing your experience in painting clouds in water colors. Though you have sincerely narrated the merits and flaws in these experiments, all these are appearing very valuable after finishing. You are a great artist.
thanks so much for sharing you talent and demonstrating the ups and downs involved in your choices. My paint plan for today is cloud studies as we have lots of variations going on today with sun, shadows and storm clouds moving in, then sun peeking in again. I am watching your video repeatedly, very helpful for sure. new subbie. The study in your upper right corner, when seen at the end in the context of a bit of distance, looks to me like rocks on a beach surrounded by shallow water and edged by sand. seriously, this one has a lovely option of being a seascape, particularly near sunset when the sands become orange tinted.
Thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed listening to my ups and downs, haha! It’s funny that you made your comment about the upper right cloud study because that’s exactly what my mom said when I showed it to her! She said it looked likes rocks or the tops of whales peeking out of the water! As I said in the video, it didn’t turn out as I had planned, but that’s kind of a fun surprise, isn’t it?
This I sooo amazing.... I've been looking for a proper watercolor cloud painting tutorial with clear explanation....... And this is it...... I also felt very comfortable and less 'nervous' hearing you saying that you could've corrected a few things and it reminded me that it's completely alright to make mistakes and motivating me to GET STARTED 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗 🤗 🤗 😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄 THANK YOU...
You did these beautifully. I love sky scenes and am inspired to give this a go after watching you do it. It was so relaxing watching this and the music you used in the background added to the serenity of the experience.
Thank you! I'm glad my cloud studies inspired you! I also like making my videos calm and positive space to retreat to, even if I am critical of myself, it's all about learning and the experience!
I just bought that Winsor & Newton mop brush (5/8") and it's absolutely amazing quality. Those Cotman brushes are such good quality and not super expensive. The synthetic fibers are SUPER soft and bendy, but flex back to their original shape super easily. But yes, SUPER soft. I look forward to getting more.
I used the W&N Cotman brushes when I was learning to watercolor paint and they worked really well for me, I’m surprised I don’t see more people using them. I don’t use them as much anymore because I love my silver black velvet brushes, however I do prefer the W&N Cotman brushes over some other pricier synthetics. I’m glad you like it!
Many thanks for this really informative video. I find clouds very hit and miss and you showed some really interesting techniques! So lovely to hear you critique of your own work! I thought they all looked great!
I really like how you explain if you could do it again, what you would do better. That's great information since learning from mistakes is the true process of making progress. Thank you for sharing!
i am a beginner at watercolor and not having very good results, so hearing you struggle made me feel better, and that I am not a total loser at art!
Have a look at simple paint with Frank
Also a Beginner! We can share our frustrations if u want :)
No ones a loser at art! Everyone can make art, it’s all subjective.
We all strugle in some areas. I seem to have issues with clouds and flowers. So this is refreshing and encouraging
You can never do everything perfectly the first time! There are not losers, just students.
Thanks for also showing things you thought you did wrong and explaining why you thought it went wrong (even though it still looks great in my opinion). Refreshing to see somebody not pretending to be perfect but just showing the process of learning as well.

Like your honesty, keep teaching us, thnk you
Many thanks for this really informative video. I find clouds very hit and miss and you showed some really interesting techniques! So lovely to hear you critique of your own work! I thought they all looked great!
Very, very beautiful. Lots to take away, thank you.
You are one of the best watercolor artists I've watched! Beautiful!
Aw thank you so much!
Nice. Love the calm approach and her technique is spot on
I totally love your skills and paintings dear. Thanks for making videos for us
Thanks so much for sharing. Honestly, each one looks great to me. They each have a true variation of the sky and its cloulds.
Although you mentioned it's not a tutorial video it's actually one of the best tutorial video I've watched on watercoloring😊👍
Beautifull😍. Your study encourages me to paint again.
I really like how you explain if you could do it again, what you would do better. That's great information since learning from mistakes is the true process of making progress. Thank you for sharing!
I finally got a chance to watch this and these are DROP DEAD GORGEOUS!
Aw thank you Emily!!
Lovely video.. you are so natural and simple person
Impressive - loved watching. I am starting a big sky painting of gorgeous clouds I saw while driving the highway yesterday. Thank you.
Highways are such a great place for cloud watching! (but be careful if you are driving!)
I liked how you explained your movements and I’m just a beginner and hopefully I can try and do the same I liked your work
