    I think modern humans show up as omnivores, but if we test the biomes of our pre-agricultural ancestors we'd find they were carnivores. Our biomes are determined by what we eat. Modern humans eat far to much carbohydrates. Compare western biomes to that of traditional Inuits and Masai.

    Her Ted Talk forced me to revisit eating plants, seeds and nuts and turned me into a carnivore. Following an animal-based diet is optimal. Thank you, lady.

    Hello from Australia to all at the AMNH, thank you for this thought provoking talk. I am currently completing my Bachelors in Applied Science and was curious as to what information if any you have on the effects of modern health care in the microbiomes we depend on? Is there any correlation between differences in microbiomes in vaccinated vs non-vaccinated subjects? and also, Is there any correlation between differences in microbiomes in heavy or frequent users of antibiotics vs those who rarely if ever take them and those who refuse to take them? .... and also lol .... during severe illness do the organisms in the microbiomes react and do the reactions (if they do occur) have positive or adverse effects on the immune system's capabilities and/or efficency? If you have any answers or theories it would be much appreciated, otherwise I'll have to get to it myself one day :)

      I realize this comment is 8 years old, and that you may no longer care.
      Thought I would mention Ray Peat's perspective, that gut bacteria are inherently toxic, because they produce endotoxin (lipopolysaccharide) upon death.
      Also, the "glycobiome" may interest you to research further. Dr Kiltz talked about it in a podcast with Dr Chaffee, and it gets really weird real fast.
      I have more questions than answers, it's just that these two perspectives are quite rare and might further develop your knowledge.

    From Abstract of a 2023 paper: Absorptive intestinal epithelial cells are characterized by an intense energy metabolism that allows macromolecule synthesis and movement of nutrients in the small intestine, and water and electrolyte absorption in the large intestine. These cells which are polarized can receive their fuels from the luminal content and from the bloodstream. In the case of the large intestine, the colonocytes can absorb large amounts of numerous metabolites produced by the intestinal microbiota and metabolize a part of them during their transfer from the luminal fluid to the bloodstream. -Francois Blachier
    So, IDK if I buy this claim in the 17th minute that butyrate for colon cells depends on fiber. Keto diets might do it... or just eating butter ffs.

    Omnivore microbiota can be from eating omnivore food. Maby în carnivore humans the microbiome is like the ones in carnivore.

    i ate plants. cut a long story short they made me ill. iam now pure carnivore and thriving, with all my illnesses gone. iam stronger and much happier. my depression has gone and my brain fog has gone and therefore my intelligence has greatly improved. so carnivore is the optimal way of eating. the proof is in the pudding lol.

    Once again Christina Warinner does a spectacular job of failing to investigate the Modern Paleo diet and its tenets _before_ attempting to debunk it. The modern Paleo Diet does _not_ purport to be a diet of the same foods our ancestors ate. A scientist should know better than to define the idea she is critiquing through media headlines and should do her due diligence and get educated from the source. Two years since she did this same thing at TED and she _still_ hasn't learned her lesson.
    Major fail.

      Please define "Modern Paleo diet". My impressions are from a decade ago. The diet then seemed to be an attempt to eat more like are paleolithic ancestors.

      ThePaleoHuntress 100% agreed. I've been eating paleo, myself since 2007. No one has ever said you need to hunt wild game or forage for wild fruits, vegetables, nuts, berries, etc. The modern paleolithic diet is an emulation of our ancestral diet, not an attempt at an exact duplication of it, and anyone who tries to "debunk" it on that basis has no understanding of it at all. As Stephan Molyneaux has said, we should judge the claims of others by how closely they, themselves, exemplify or represent those claims. In other words, if one is going to posture as an authority on diet - any diet - they should at least be someone who is, themselves, fit and trim as a result of the diet. Obviously, Christina hasn't had much positive experience with any diet, that I can see! LOL

      The Paleolithic ended about 11,000 years ago. So, does the term "Modern Paleo" even make sense?

      I have been a Paleo diet practitioner for about 3 years. By not eating processed foods filled with additives & sugars, not eating grains, legumes and dairy and eating good natural fruits, vegetables and meat my health has improved 100%. I think people get mixed up with the name "Paleo diet" as if it is a "hunter gatherer" diet. Of course, anyone who follows this way of eating never expected to be hunting their food. LOL
