I've been saving your review until I finished the book, which I did. Loved your review, and loved the book. I was actually initially suspect of the story, as it had so many immediate parallels to anime series I'd seen, and to the Avatar series. But what M.L. Wang did with the magic system was so unique, and uniquely different, from Avatar, that I was quickly enchanted by her creativity, and the characters themselves were, as you point out, so consistently engaging and distinct that I soon forgot my initial fears and dove in full force. And man, was it a force!

I really enjoyed reading this book as part of the read along in December. I never would have found it on my own so thank you Andrew for setting that up. I've since picked up Blood Over Bright Haven by haven't read it yet but have heard good reviews.

Just finished reading it... loved your spoiler talk. There are nowhere near enough of these type of vids as it's usually just reviews. Keep these coming... thanks !

It's been a few years since I read this, and I remember feeling exactly as you did throughout.

Not me sadistically watching others get traumatised.
Didn’t read this book BECAUSE I knew it would hurt. But I was always so curious about it, especially cause it sounds exactly like what I’d love. This video let me pretend I was reading the book besides Andrew WITHOUT having to suffer the pain first hand 😂

I loved it. I felt that it would have been a very different book if it had gone through an editor at a publisher. For example, the central character is great, but seems to be in a supporting role until the book is under way.

The subtitles kept reading Sword of Ken 🤭🤣 I love this book though. It was my final listen of 2023 and I was wasted.

I believe this is the first book that I’ve read, knowing it’s been highly praised, and feeling it was “fine” … I don’t feel good about it… On to Empire of the Damned 🧛🏽‍♀️

Left the book after Mamoru's death, felt like all his build up until that point was pointless.
Edit: Ok...i finished the book, overall i liked it...but i felt that the ending was kind of weird, there where some things that (for me) didn't connect with the story, specially the attack of the guy who can change his appearence and the objectives of his group, but i think maybe is explained in another book or else.

DNF’ed at 50% and read the spoilers. I was bored with the storyline.

I dont get the hype. I read it thought it was just ok at best. The other hype train I just cant board (other than the terrible romantasy genre) is the Murderbot diaries I think those books are just terrible and boring, I dont get it.

    • @janwastaken

Yeah Murderbot is definitely boring. I tried getting into it so many times because of the amount of people recommending it, but I think it’s an overrated, boring little novella

The book was decent. I thought it was really corny that misaki was basically a superhero not to mention she was 14 years old when she was one

this book honestly sucks and i dont get why people like it. the idea is cool but the execution is awful. Am i supposed to suspend my disbelief to the point where i think a bunch of guys with shitty ice katanas are going to be a serious threat against other civilizations that have space flight and high altitude bombers? in what world is that anywhere close to plausible? but thats the whole plot of this novel.
the big achievement of the book is when a guy can cut steel with his ice katana. one guy. out of thousands who try.... oh yeah i bet everyones just shaking in their boots as they load up the bombers and pound their whole town into rubble.
