Are you a Bose or Bowers & Wilkins kinda person?

    • @SebastianBohn

Tough to tell… coming from the good old QC35ii as my daily commute drivers I chose the S2e now. Must say ANC is really next level. With sound quality it’s kind of the same. The B&W are much more linear and richer. Also their look and feel, gorgeous. However, Bose’s wearing comfort is still slightly better. So, it’s probably a close call if the new QC Ultra are so similar to the B&Ws.

So here it goes.. I was recently going through the same predicament as many of you are and was on the fence deciding between the QC Ultra or the Px7 S2e (such a nice problem to have - am I right?). While watching and reading online reviews might help to an extent, I ended up having to find a store where I could try them both before. Before this trial session, I was 80% sure of my decision to go with the Ultras. Long story short, I left the store with the Px7 S2e's. Here is why:
-Sound: While this is a very subjective topic, I found the sound quality to be much better on the Px7 S2e's than with the Ultras. Not sure if this was because of the always on (and strong) ANC on the Ultras - but they sounded muffled and very flat (other than a good amount of base it lacked character). It is worth mentioning that I had to fine tune the EQs on each before I had something that sounded pleasant. But even after that, I still found the Px7 S2e's to be better sounding in general
-Controls: This ended up being a huge deciding factor for me thanks to the listening session. I found the controls on the Px7 S2e's much more accessible and easier to use than the Ultras. On the Ultras, I kept touching the volume slider accidentally (lowering or increasing the volume by mistake) and had a hard time identifying the single button by touch or using it for the playback options. It is literally one button for 4 or more different actions. The Px7 S2e's have more than one single button and physical volume buttons that you can easily identify by touch. Furthermore, you have another button on the left ear cup for ANC controls
-ANC: Bose has better ANC but you cannot have it turned off. While the ANC on the Px7 S2e's aren't as good as the Ultra's I still found it great and sufficient for my use case. My commute isn't long and I don't travel much these days. I mostly my Px7 S2e's for music and gaming at home. I did find the lack of an "off" option on the Ultras to be an interesting design choice by Bose. I like having to option to do so - I guess this also explains why the Px7 S2e's have better battery life
-Fancy audio: The Ultras feature transparency and immersive/spatial audio modes while the Px7 S2e's does not. This could be a deciding factor for you if you enjoy watching movies with a headset on. But It wasn't for me.The Px7 S2e's only feature ANC on, pass-through and ANC off
-Wired playback: the Px7 S2e's works with USB-C/wired playback while the Ultras don't. You can use the included AUX cable on the Ultras but can't imagine it would work well with higher bit rate content
-Headset build/quality: I'm not sure how this is point is up for debate. If you have access to both, you will notice immediately that the Px7 S2e's have better materials and feel more premium. The Bose QC Ultras are entirely made out of plastic and feel flimsy the moment they are handed to you. This, however, is great for weight. But I have had no issues with the weight of the Px7 S2e's
-Fitting: This is another one that I benefited from the trial session. I have an average sized head and found that the Px7 S2e's fit me better and the Ultras were a big on the bigger size. I have to assume that the fitting could have also impacted the sound quality with the lack of a better seal. But in general, I feel that most people forget about fitting when looking for headphones. One size or configuration does not fit all in some cases.
-Pricing: With all of the above being considered, the Px7 S2e's are cheaper than the Bose QC Ultra
I hope this was helpful to you. Let me know if you have more questions!

I’m in the same predicament between the px7se, the QC ULTRAS and possibly xm5s but am so indecisive at the moment. I’m no audiophile at all, in fact I’m not accustomed to using EQ settings on headphones other than the pre listed ones given by the headphones app. So I’m wondering if I would even benefit from the px7se sound quality or if the Bose QC Ultra would be better suited as this will be my first purchase into the premium headphone world. I have the XM5, Bose QC Ultra and the PS2e here for testing. The XM5 have been my daily since they came out. In Terms of pure Sound the B&W win hands down. However in terms of ANC they are utterly bad for their price point. Since most people care about ANC features for commuting or loud office environments.. they aint it.
Bose however surprised me. I never liked Bose because the older models put some kind of locked room pressure on my ears, but the QC Ultra are amazing, aber they actually blow the XM5 away in terms of ANC.
I tested in special environments since i work in a datacenter with VERY LOUD high pitch blade center fans, and its not even comparable how much better the bose are.

As a frequent traveller, ANC and wearing comfort are the primary points I care about. I have the QC35 and was pretty happy with them until the mic died, not just making it impossible to make calls but probably also affecting the ANC. I still use them for any audio output, be it on phone or computer, but because of the mic issue, they will need to be replaced. As reviews seemed to indicate the QC35, 700, and QC45 didn't significantly improve on ANC and Sony started to get ahead with their XM3, I was eyeing towards Sony but the XM3 didn't allow to connect more than one device, if I remember correctly and the padding was thinner so you'd get irritated ears after wearing them for a long time (not an issue for me with the QC35 which I often wear the whole day at home). XM4 or XM5 have solved those issues according to reviews, so I was almost about to get the XM5 but was a bit annoyed you can't fold them anymore like the previous models. So it seems the QC Ultras should get a chance, in particular with the improved ANC, even though it's also a bit annoying that you can use them while charging for whatever stupid reason (you can use your phone, laptop etc while charging, so why not your headphones)

  • @jasonwrites9186

Own both and if you want the better ANC, then the Bose. If you're very sensitive to headphone weight, not that the Bowers are "heavy", but the Bose are lighter. The Bowers for me sound significantly better - the Bose sound "fine", the Bowers sound engaging. Unless I need to block out environmental noise above all else, there's no reason for me to grab the Bose.
But the other thing to keep in mind is when do you plan on using them. If you're using them walking, out and about, you likely aren't in an "active listening" mode and I can see people thinking maybe they sound similar. But if you plan on using them at home, on the couch, while relaxing - the Bowers, especially with the new firmware, sound a lot better.

Last week I brought an Ultra set on a flight and, yes, it really silences the jet noise. And, the case is more compact. The Px7 was returned.

I was curious about your conclusions when you indicated that this video would be coming out, because I want great instrument separation, and I want vocals to be crisp, clear, and out in front of my music, which both these headphones seem to offer. In the end, as you point out, I would consider myself a “Bose person” (even though I don’t always actually trust their products), and that’s why I went that way.
Also, I would like the stronger ANC, I listen to more energetic music and am looking for a strong low end, and Bose seems to have a promising Immersive Audio that I want to check out. I ordered a pair of the Bose yesterday.

I bought the Bose QC Ultra, I am really satisfied with it overall. ANC and aware mode is really good, the best ANC I experienced. But there are a few a drawbacks that makes it hard to justify the price of the Bose. The case is small, but feels cheap, battery life is okay, but compared to others I need to charge it after 2 days instead of 3-4, quickcharge is really bad. I use it for work, listening to music and calls. The Focal and the Sony charges enough in the middle of the day to last for the day, but I needed to leave the Bose on the charger for an hour and need a replacement for that time. Also with the Focal if it was empty i just popped in the usb-c cable while listening to music no problem, this cant be done with the Bose. The build quality feels really cheap compared to headphones in this price range.
I really like them, and going to keep them, sound is ok and it is comfortable, however if ANC is not important, there are better cheaper headphones on the market.

The B&W I think edge the sound quality, but it is close and they do feel more premium. The ANC on them is I think more than good enough for my daily commute. Not tried them on a flight yet. I think the ANC difference is less evident when actually lisatening to music but is noticeable when the volume dips between tracks for example, maybe you can get away a notch lower volume on the Bose? Maybe
The Bose on the other hand flip it around with more than good enough sound and class leading noise cancelling, they are also (IMO) more comfortable and fold down better for my use. I rarely use cases, I prefer to put them in a separate compartment in my work bag. I even used to put my QC45s in my coat pocket.
The procrastination is strong with these 2, keep the B&W and I’ll always feel I am missing out on ultimate ANC, keep the bose and I’ll be missing the sound of the B&W!

Thanks Mark, great comparison. I ordered both a few weeks ago to do the A/B comparison, so I could choose one.. Guess what? I am keeping them both! Can't give either up. I paid amazingly low prices for each one(got lucky). I was still tempted to try the PX8, but for the money already invested in these 2, I will stay put. You described the sound differences very well. They sound really different to me. I love both headphones sound quality! Ultra's are more comfortable for me. A few asked what EQ settings u use for the Bower's, haven't seen a reply on that. As you said,
can't go wrong with either one. I guess I am a Bowers/Bose person!

I would never call myself a audiophile but they sound pretty different to me. Both arent bad but i dont hear the 500€ sound from the bose. Its just the normal 300 € sound and the px7 s2e are half a step above that. Not much but you hear more from the music and you can dive deeper into it. The bose gets 4/5 and the px 7 s2e gets 4,5 from me.

In trialling them both - the Bose is more accomplished in connecting to multi devices. The app has way more fun features. The Bluetooth connection has about a third more reach from a remote source. Here’s a shout out to purchasing refurbished headphones from Bose at a third discount. They just clean up ones that are sent back and they seem like brand new. Also the active noise cancellation is best in class. I do miss the B&W as they were also very nice, they just had less interior volume and made my ears hurt after a few hours of wear.

  • @bobbydazzler1780
    @bobbydazzler1780 16 дней назад

The Bose are the only active noise cancellation that deals with a bloke in the office with a deep baritone booming voice. He gets nicely attenuated out of the picture by about 90%. The B&Ws only managed to kill him off about 50%. If ANC is your deal breaker definately go with the Bose. Or wear wax earplugs. His voice carries about 50m easily and even through a toilet wall. The Bose reduce him to a very low volume mumble. Stick a device source on top - he’s history!

I'm in a difficult position, tried both at the shops. Absolutely love the sound quality of the B&W's! They blew everything else out the water. Tested a number of headphones, they were the ones for me. But the noise cancelling is garbage, I could hear people talking 15-20 feet away with the ANC on. Is that the same for everybody else? I need noise cancelling for long drives on my van and flying. The bose had great noise cancellation but didn't sound great....the Sony X4 & X5's, Sonos, and JBL's were all pants.

This is one of the videos thay helped me make my final decision! The sound quality is amazing and the headphones themselves feel very luxurious. Or maybe I'm looking much too into it. 😅

Just got my super nice Forest Green Px7 S2e headphones today, after testing them thoroughly in the store against a few other contenders. They're awesome. Very comfortable (the Momentum 4 were kicked out for that reason) and they sound just amazing.
Funnily enough, the store didn't even sell any Bose devices anymore because of too many RMA requests and Bose's shitty handling of them. 😅 My QC35 wouldn't turn off anymore at some point without extensive use (the switch is only rated for 5000!!! actuations) while the QC35II's headband wouldn't stay extended anymore, always getting tighter while walking around with them. That's two for two regarding bad manufacturing quality, so no more Bose for me.

Creaking headband, popping/crackling noise in the left ear cup (also occurs when the headphones are turned off so it's not the ANC) when walking even gently or with head movements. Will be returning them and getting the px7 se2 (can't afford the px8). Bose's quality control seems to be very lax these days. The audio quality is great to my ears and the ANC is top notch however what's the point when one of the cups rattles/pops whenever you move your head or walk?

Just got the B&W PX7 S2e and I am in love with them. The only main reasons I got them was the following points:
    - Balanced detailed sound
    - High quality build and comfortable to wear
    - Long battery life
    - Manufactured in the UK so you know it's outstanding quality unlike other brands which are commonly cheaply made in China, Vietnam or India.
    - I am a fan of buttons, unlike other headphone brands that are focused on touch controls, which I despise due to accidental touches and sensitivity.
Although Bose is a good brand for sound as well as noise-cancelling, I have had instances with QCiis where I have had to replace them or switch to another brand like Sennheiser, simply because the battery life deteriorated over time.
