  • You've probably heard the term "streamlining" when it comes to the permit process for new housing in San Francisco. Yet despite efforts to build 82,000 new housing units in the next eight years, San Francisco's streamlining process hasn't gone far enough to meet that goal. So, California has put San Francisco on notice by threatening to lose millions in funding. abc7ne.ws/49hu7Lm

The obvious question is: who benefits from the obstacles that prevent new housing units? I wonder if current property owners are worried that building thousands of new housing units will lower rent and, therefore, lower their rental incomes.

More housing units near them means according to them (although they won't ever admit it), means more poor black and brown people moving in, followed by an increase in crime, followed by a plummeting of their property values.

They want to make SF as the most expensive city. It can't be expensive if you allow them to add more and more home at lower price. They wanted rich get richer and the poor to get poor. This is intentional. Look at Tokyo housimg policy. They very friendly zoning and the house value stay mostly the same.

The sheer number of NIMBYs in SF is astounding. And its so easy for them to railroad any new developments from just one complaint and the burden is on the business/developers to prove otherwise, wasting their resources. I heard that a few apartment owners in one of those ocean view condos filed a complaint to the city since their ocean view would be slightly obstructed from this new development. In the end, the condo owners managed to get the developer to cancel the entire project. Insane, what a failed city :(

There are 61,000+ vacant units in San Francisco, 15% of all housing units. Downtown San Francisco has 18.4 million square feet of empty office space. The vacancy rate for the second quarter of 2023 was 31.8%. There is plenty of room for new housing units in San Francisco. All it takes is the will of the people to make it happen.

Who in their right mind would invest their money in SF rental housing? They have transferred property rights from the investors to the tenants. The rent control is so punitive that some owners would rather keep their units vacant than take the risk on a tenant. Rather than examine the negative consequences of their policies and the perverse incentives they have created they introduce a vacancy tax. This is like their housing policies were designed by Rube Goldberg and their motto is "the beatings will continue until morale improves". vote out? Many of its progressive San Franciscan voted and supported these individuals into power! None of garbage and lawlessness you see today are a phenomenon that took place overnight but through years and decades of policies focus on supposedly helping and protecting individuals that would be associated in the class of victims of society's supposed racist institution and declaring that all ILLEGALS would also get the same protected rights. These fentanyl sellers...there might just be a chance with a good number of them being sellers but then again. The city's commitment to refuse to work with ICE. I don't know if anyone remember that incident with that ILLEGAL migrant shot and kill a woman. Yes he was found not guilty. Yes he was deported but managed to come back to the US multiple occasion. This is the kind of silliness and sadness that will won't go away. Heck, I would rather push the dude off the pier and be done with it but then again...the city would rush to the city of the killer and protect him at all cost. Do I feel sad? Yes, I only feel sad for the people that are against San Francisco and its backward society and those that are against it are a small minority.
