EVH makes some of the best quality budget guitars in the world. Those Indonesian EVH Standards are built like tanks. The neck pickup is a little dark, but the bridge pickup is amazing.
Honestly I don’t hear much, if any, difference between the two that wouldn’t be attributed to the way the pick attacks the strings. They both sounded great to me. As much as I love wood grain and that gorgeous spalted maple top, I just can’t get over how amazing that purple is!
Of the small differences, I preferred the sound of your EVH standard. One thing surprised me... when playing clean with both pickups, your EVH standard had a slight "quack" sound! The EVH special didn't do that. Overall, slightly clearer/brighter sound from your EVH standard.
Standard have a nice tone. Special has a richer sound, full of nuances. But are small differences. I prefer standard neck than special. Isn't the same profile. Nice test .

I have 4 EVH Standards and 3 EVH wolfgang specials and I have to say I hate the D tuna. it's a pain to set up and hard to keep in tune. on my Specials I've eliminated the Dtuna's cause they are just such a pain.
I’m having trouble keeping my special in tune lately. After leaving it on the stand a few days fhe tuning will just shift a half step almost in either direction

I love the EVH Guitars I've started to tune all my EVH Guitars with the Dtunas to standard tuning and leave the Dtunas alone because they kind suck and require so much attention. I have an EVH 5150 and 3 EVH wolfgang specials And I have 4 EVH wolfgang standards and the wolfgang standards are fun to play because they arent so fiddly. I get so frustrated with my specials that have the D Tuna because they are so hard to adjust and get tone consistently.

From what I've learned from a pretty reliable source is that the Standard has the "actual" EVH Frankenstein pickup in it where the Special does not, it's just an EVH Wolfgang Alnico humbucker, not the Frankenstein pu. I know that's strange but quite a few things here are in the comparison of a "supposed" higher end to lower end model. Something to look into

The depth front to back. About 0.015” thinner on the standard. Doesn’t sound like much, can feel different. I like thick necks for my extra large oven mitt hands so I’m always checking these things before buying a guitar. I’ve custom shaped a few baseball bat necks for comfort reasons. Just ordered a Special in Deep Purple Metallic, can’t wait! It’s a but thinner than I like but I think with the Asymmetrical profile it will be just fine.
Neither of those guitars have maple tops on them. The spalted is a veneer about the thickness of a sheet of paper and has exactly zero tonal qualities. The mexican has USA pickups in it. The Indonesian has Indonesian made copies in them. The maple top wolfies are exclusively made in the USA in Corona.
They do not have the same Floyd .. special is much better with Floyd Rose FRT-1000 .. the standard is Floyd Rose special.. the 1000 is about the same quality as an original.. the special has cheaper parts that will wear out
I don’t like either one, just not a fan of those. Whatever you do don’t tell Wolfgang Van Halen or he’ll come to my house and replace all my awesome guitars with Wolfgangs 🤮
@@GearGasmsi know, its subtle, but for me i found it to have a noticable effect on my fret hand playing. Strange how a millimetre or two could do that lol, but it for me it did.
@6Stringers yeah I have a unicorn of a Les Paul Standard (16) that has an asymmetrical carve and I love them. The Peavey Wolfgang neck carve felt even better!
I took the EVH wolfgang standard exotic bocote. This is a terrible guitar in terms of build, I've never seen such a crooked $800 guitar in my life. It is better to spend money but take a guitar more expensive and of high quality. At least Peavey HP2. I don't think the EVH Special is doing much better than the standard.
@@GearGasms My Floyd Royce has 2 threads broken on the 5th and 2nd strings. Floyd himself is not installed evenly, because of this, the 6th string is near the edge, fingers constantly fly off. Also, the notch for the neck is not made exactly, on the one hand 15 millimeters on the other 18 millimeters from the body. Also, the body does not consist of one single piece of wood. It consists of 4 glued pieces. This is not normal for an $800 guitar. Before taking the guitar, I looked at a lot of reviews and was pleased that I could take it. I did not return it to the store only because the war broke out in my country 2 days after the war started, my city is on the front line, so I had to leave and only a year later I was able to pick up the guitar and discover all these shortcomings.

I’m starting to hate my D-tuna on my Special. Tuning stabllity issues. I may take it off. No such problems on my striped series - either one of them
Standard actually has a bit thinner neck according to the specs. Also the Special neck is quartersawn maple which is stiffer.
