One thing I forgot to mention, but could easily be implied by me having run through three charges in a day: the battery life on this isn’t great compared to the other higher end Godox products. Which shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone, with the same battery form factor, and more power. The new battery is rated for slightly less mAh, which I suspect is because of its higher power handling construction. A little trade off. It’s fine...it’s just not stellar.
Do you mean that the product fails to meet the number of shots it indicates at full power? or that not all you shots to full power were to the same recycle time? thanx and appreciate you effore to bring us your review
Just that it gets less shots than the usual for Godox products. Not everyone is going to read the spec sheet, and many will miss this. It gets a max of 320 full powered shots. The AD200 gets 500 AD400 Pro 390 AD600 500 V860ii 650 AD600 Pro 360 So it’s the lowest number of shots per battery they’ve released to date. One of the prices you pay for the super compact size.

Please notice that AD300Pro has torch instead of modeling light. The same issue is related to AD100Pro but not to AD600Pro (which allows to set modeling lamp mode to interruptible). If you take pictures with long exposure time or using low flash power (1/256) - the light of "modeling lamp" will blend together with flash exposure, resulting color casts, overexposure or ghosts in case of moving objects. I wrote to Godox and ask them to fix firmware.
The irony being this is something some were asking for for less interruption in faster shooting scenarios. But would be nice to add an Option to turn that on or off.

Personally I’ve never been a big fan of the two part design of the 360. But I can see how that could be more effective for some. The 300 Pro will give you better color stability, a modeling lamp, faster recycle time, and a smaller overall package (that last one really being the chief selling point of this unit).

I used Yonguo, and I just kept melting them down because they didn’t have any sort of overheat control (I melted four, fixed them all (had to replace internal components), melted all four again. Then I switched to Nissin, and they were Okay, but very basic and not super versatile. Then I switched to Godox, which was a godsend. Hey Wes great video.. I got this item from amazon last days! But my high speed sync turned off everytime I took one photo! Why its happening? I have an A7R4 and put speed sync on from the trigger, but on the flashpoint goes off everything you shoot the first photo! Can you check with your device, the trigger still on, but device goes off after the first attempt! Let me know Thank you! Dhyogo
Definitely doesn’t happen to me. What’s your flash sync setting in your camera? Sounds like it might be on rear curtain sync maybe? Needs to be on fill flash to work.
I like the ad300 for the photos I shoot because of the lamp that helps with focusing. new mirrorless cameras have less of a problem focusing due to the embedded "eye-focus" feature. Nice vid
It is wireless, but it requires a wireless trigger (I don’t think there are any wireless flashes that don’t require a trigger). Godox has 4 to choose from. X1T, X2T, XPro and XPro2
Which trigger? I honestly can’t decide. I have all of them and like them each for different reasons 😂 I like the compact form factor for the X1T, but it is less convenient. The big screen on the XPro series is great, but I find it makes the whole thing too big. 🤷🏻♂️😂
Yeah. As I said in the video, the Godox system is great in that you have a ton of choices and options, and it all works well together. Lots of different flashes, lots of different compatible triggers. For the triggers you just have to make sure you get the right variant for your camera brand (X1T-s for Sony, X1T-n for Nikon, X1T-F for Fuji, etc).
Thanks for the review Wes. Trying to decide between this and the Ad400 pro! Just a point on the mounting in the S2 bracket, should you not mount around the silver head ring, possibly a better fit and less flex?
@@WesPerry good point, hadn't thought of that. Taking the upgrade from the AD200 to this or the 400pro, so not had chance to hold them yet and feel the build quality etc. Keep the videos coming. Thanks
Scan for channels??? Why would it have that? V1 is controller also, AD300 isn't! I didn't find that either AD400 or 600 have that... Didn't you get carried away a bit?
What else am I going to scan channels with? Should I bring my V1 everywhere I go to do it? The X1T, X2T and XPro controllers don’t have that feature, so they need to build it into One end of the product line or the other. The XPro2 has it, but that’s only available at Adorama in the states...not in my country.
Wes, have you ever had a chance to try the Westcott FJ400. I’m wondering how the AD300PRO compares to those. I’m actually trying to decide between these two. I’m hearing great things about the Fj400 but I love the design and portability of the AD300PRO. I guess each has its own pros and cons.
I haven’t gotten my hands on that one, no. I had kind of assumed it was a rebuilt (more cheaply built) AD400 Pro, but I have no real evidence for that ;) (also possibly made by Neewer). It’s a Much bigger light than the AD300 Pro, so there’s a little bit of apples to oranges going on there, though.
Lovely to see the cats again and meet the family 😍 How does one know what modifiers and accessories go with these Round Godox? Hesitant to order on line and get it wrong....
Yeah, it’s a bit confusing for now, as they’re just currently trickling onto the market. They’re specifically called “Godox Mount”, though, and you can start your search with the Godox AD-S85S and go from there 😉
I love your straight talking reviews .. I do have a question.. & even after rewinding & playing again im not sure what you said.. So in High speed sync is it better to have Front curtain Sync ON my a7riii ?
Electronic first curtain shutter OFF for sure. It causes flash banding with most flashes and can even mess with your bokeh. Front curtain sync is a whole other thing though.
Yeah, all anyone Really wants to see me do is lights and lenses...but unfortunately there are only so many to go around, especially when this channel doesn’t make enough money to even buy a TT350, if you know what I mean 😂
I don’t quite understand your scenario. The AD200Pro doesn’t have a flash controller in it, so it needs to be wirelessly controlled itself. And if it’s already being wirelessly triggered, why wouldn’t you just use that trigger to also control the AD300 Pro?
Assuming that was your wife and not some random woman in your backyard, mazel tov! Another excellent, informative, entertaining video, Wes. Looking forward to another installment soon.
I’ve dropped the AD100 Pro multiple times now 😂 And I’ve now dropped the AD300 Pro a couple times. The glass flash tube protector shattered, and unfortunately that one part is $50 in my country 🤦🏻♂️
That totally makes sense, but it has all the hardware necessary to execute the function, so why not just put it in? At least in my own particular use case, I usually come in and set up my lights before ever even opening up my camera bag. This means I have to remember to dig my transmitter out of the bag to scan first, or pull the lights back down and adjust their channels after. It’s nice to have options!
Yet you still wait to adjust your lights with the trigger 'after' setup. I'm surprised that you found the battery life less than stellar and the LED lacking. I find the LED quite bright and have only had to change the battery once, and that was during a noon sun shoot using HSS. I like the versatility of the 300 so much I got three. Although, there should be far more Godox mount mods available - not a fan of the S-Type bracket when packing small.
Yes but I can’t adjust the channel the lights are on with the trigger. I have to go bring the lights down to adjust them. With a modifier on the AD300 I don’t know if I’ve ever been in a circumstance dark enough or wide aperture enough for the LED to do anything at all for me. Everyone’s use case will vary, of course. And I was also expecting a lot more godox mount stuff to appear, but it seems almost as abandoned as their magnetic mounting system. A little disappointing. All that being said, the AD300 is my most used flash still to this day.
With their profit margins and loyal following, I don’t think they’ll have too much trouble, in the near future at least. It would be interesting to see what Godox could produce if they made a light that cost as much as a Profoto, though 🤔😏
@@WesPerry True. Profoto takes care of the R&D and leads the business so 2-3x seem fair. But the price-to-quality gap seem to decrease putting loyalty to test. This light might be the gamechanger.
Not a fan of putting in on the metal ring, as then the bulb doesn’t reach far enough into the softbox to be diffused properly. It’s such a short bulb that it doesn’t even clear the Bowen’s flange of most boxes in that position.
I find your videos more entertaining and informative than from that other fellow, starts with the letter R, haha. Robert, although knowledgeable, seems to just drone on and makes me want to fall asleep. But I actually stay awake throughout your videos.
Great video Wes. I agree on the battery life, but it really isn’t bad. I have been testing my ad300pro for the last 2 weeks. I like it more than my ad200pro.
When this was first announced I was so distracted by the shiny bits and I said I got to get this but I have four Ad200 and the A.D. 300 only gives me a half a stop more output for $500.so I'm still undecided, but it is shiny :)
Just this cheap thing: amzn.to/2zim7wU As long as you’re shooting just a bit separated from the background and a bit shallow, the cheap ones do the job. If I had to do some high fashion work at f/11, it’s cheapness would be apparent 😏
Best is pretty subjective. Depends on what you need. The AD200 has a unique form factor that is highly adaptable for various different applications due to the swappable head design. BUT the 300 has more power in an arguably smaller package. I’m afraid that at the end of the day, I can’t make that call for anyone else ;)
AD300 took a 7 foot fall with the QR 90cm / S2 Bracket and Cstand, flash took the brunt of the hit on the concrete floor, no issues, went through a 680 shot job the next day so in build, this thing rocks, hopefully you won't have to go through my panic and mishap to find out.
I dropped mine about 3 feet onto pavement and the bulb protective glass cover shattered, but not the bulb. Still works fine, but that protective cover is super hard to find in Canada. Still looking for a replacement.
The one shocking, surprising aspect of your review is: how did you manage to keep your cats sitting quietly on that stool?? If I try with my cats, they would go anywhere EXCEPT staying on the stool.
A remarkably apt observation ;) My cats are generally pretty well behaved, and usually quite interested in whatever I’m up to. They’ll follow me around the house all day. But the yellow cat (Veronica) was Not having it at all, while the grey one (Maggie) was quite happy to be involved and even found the recycle beep of the flash quite interesting (I promptly turned it off after that shoot. Can’t stand those beeps. Haha).
Plasticy, try Elinchromo not better. You used as far as I can see you did not use the fill ring when using the S2 bracket , no wonder it bends. You’re deforming the ring. Go use it please. Compare prophoto color stability for fun. You be surprised and then compare prices.

By a mile
I dunno man. A lot of people Love their AD200’s an awful lot! Especially those who make use of the AD-B2. That being said, I would totally ditch mine for 300’s as well 😂
Power and I also find the build quality and form factor to be better. The AD200 is super long, and more difficult to pack. With the 300 is fits easily where any lens would fit. Which is kindof the form factor most photography bags and cases are based around. So although the 200 is “technically” smaller volumetrically, the 300 is more compact.
One thing I forgot to mention, but could easily be implied by me having run through three charges in a day: the battery life on this isn’t great compared to the other higher end Godox products. Which shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone, with the same battery form factor, and more power.

Wes what godox softbox would u recommend on the ad300 and what bracket
First video of yours that I've seen. Enjoyed it and yes, I subscribed.
So tried to get my cats to be my models twice during all the stay home stuff but they really wouldn’t have it lol. Nice review and thank you and congratulations on the baby on the way too and your son is adorable. Thx for sharing
Hi Wes, what portable flash system did you use before using Godox and what made you switch. 😎👍🇨🇦
Such a broad variety of options, and all at a pretty good price! 👌🏻
@@WesPerry I can see meltdowns being a problem. Thanks for the reply. I live in the Vancouver area I use a Speedotron 800ws pack and M11 heads along with some Nikon SB Units.
@@WesPerry Awesome I will check out my friend! Keep up your channel, love to watch your videos! Thanks a lot buddy!
Check that both your trigger and light are on the same group. A, B, C. Happened to me. Light will turn off.
I like the ad300 for the photos I shoot because of the lamp that helps with focusing. new mirrorless cameras have less of a problem focusing due to the embedded "eye-focus" feature. Nice vid
Do you need the trigger for this light to attach to your camera when taking photos, or is it wireless?
It is wireless, but it requires a wireless trigger (I don’t think there are any wireless flashes that don’t require a trigger).
Godox has 4 to choose from. X1T, X2T, XPro and XPro2
@@WesPerry Thank you so much! In your opinion which flash should I purchase with this product out of the 4 you've mentioned?
Which trigger?
I honestly can’t decide. I have all of them and like them each for different reasons 😂
I like the compact form factor for the X1T, but it is less convenient. The big screen on the XPro series is great, but I find it makes the whole thing too big. 🤷🏻♂️😂
@@WesPerry Oh wow! So you can use any of these triggers on this device is what your saying?
Which softbox is best for AD300 pro for bridal portraits on location and in studio?
Is that location outside? All depends on how much power you need and how much ambient you need to fight against.
Thanks for the review Wes. Trying to decide between this and the Ad400 pro!
Just a point on the mounting in the S2 bracket, should you not mount around the silver head ring, possibly a better fit and less flex?
I find that mounting at the silver ring recesses the bulb further than I’d like. But you’re probably right.
@@WesPerry good point, hadn't thought of that. Taking the upgrade from the AD200 to this or the 400pro, so not had chance to hold them yet and feel the build quality etc. Keep the videos coming. Thanks
Love the photos! Nice family!
Hi Wes, love that backdrop! Where is it from? Thanks
It’s just a cheap Kate Backdrop from amazon ;)
Can you please tell me wich one?
Ok thanks for your reply Wes.
Perry delivers as always :)
Congratulations with the expansion of your family!
Seems that your "lights"-review videos are generating quite some views :)
Have a good one!
Yeah, all anyone Really wants to see me do is lights and lenses...but unfortunately there are only so many to go around, especially when this channel doesn’t make enough money to even buy a TT350, if you know what I mean 😂
@@WesPerry hahaha
Keep making them as it shows that you're also having fun making them
Greetings, can the AD300Pro be controled with the AD200Pro?
I don’t quite understand your scenario. The AD200Pro doesn’t have a flash controller in it, so it needs to be wirelessly controlled itself. And if it’s already being wirelessly triggered, why wouldn’t you just use that trigger to also control the AD300 Pro?
Assuming that was your wife and not some random woman in your backyard, mazel tov!
Another excellent, informative, entertaining video, Wes. Looking forward to another installment soon.
Thanks!
And your wife cancelled at the last minute, so I went with mine instead 😏
I don't know , should I buy this , or AD400Pro , or AD600Pro !!!
That’s a pretty wide range of power there!
flashing with the cover on you can fry the tube, happened to me in the past.
Oh I know :p
Another great review Wes.
Thanks, Bruce!
6:47 it seems like the AD200 has more mAH?
Yes indeed. Seems like some capacity had to be sacrificed for higher power handling in the new battery.
what studio flash would one be comfortable dropping ?
I’ve dropped the AD100 Pro multiple times now 😂
And I’ve now dropped the AD300 Pro a couple times. The glass flash tube protector shattered, and unfortunately that one part is $50 in my country 🤦🏻♂️
Great review & Congratulations!!
Congrats on the baby.
AD300 Pro (200 Pro/100 Pro) doesn't need channel scanning because it's receive only.
Ooo Profoto need to step up! 3 Godox for 1 Profoto. It's a gamechanger. Profoto now 3x for lights and 4-8x on accessories.
Nice video! FYI... The S bracket is supposed to be positioned on the metal ring then tightened down, not the plastic!
Not a fan of putting in on the metal ring, as then the bulb doesn’t reach far enough into the softbox to be diffused properly. It’s such a short bulb that it doesn’t even clear the Bowen’s flange of most boxes in that position.
@@WesPerry Thats a flaw then in the system that should be addressed for sure! Good to know thanks Wes!
I find your videos more entertaining and informative than from that other fellow, starts with the letter R, haha. Robert, although knowledgeable, seems to just drone on and makes me want to fall asleep. But I actually stay awake throughout your videos.
Thanks, boss. 🙏🏻
Great video Wes. I agree on the battery life, but it really isn’t bad. I have been testing my ad300pro for the last 2 weeks. I like it more than my ad200pro.
I haven’t decided where exactly it’s going to fit into my ecosystem yet. Been leaning on the AD200’s for a Long time now!
I am used to using the round barrel style strobes, elinchrom and etc. I like the small size of the ad200pro, just not the brick style design.
Thank you !!!! for a great review and HONEST opinion . Im subscribing to your channel
When this was first announced I was so distracted by the shiny bits and I said I got to get this but I have four Ad200 and the A.D. 300 only gives me a half a stop more output for $500.so I'm still undecided, but it is shiny :)
By the way, your new studio setup looks great. Hold on....I hear your doorbell ringing. Hey, it's Gerald Undone with his clipboard at your front door!
Lol, thanks ;)
But I think I’m still about 90,000 subs away from Gerald pulling into the driveway 😏
What's the black backdrop you use?
Just this cheap thing: amzn.to/2zim7wU
As long as you’re shooting just a bit separated from the background and a bit shallow, the cheap ones do the job. If I had to do some high fashion work at f/11, it’s cheapness would be apparent 😏
@@WesPerry I see, thanks, keep it up with great videos ...
WT is the best ad 200pro or ad 300pro flash?
Best is pretty subjective. Depends on what you need. The AD200 has a unique form factor that is highly adaptable for various different applications due to the swappable head design. BUT the 300 has more power in an arguably smaller package. I’m afraid that at the end of the day, I can’t make that call for anyone else ;)
Does it have a model light
It does have a 12W bi-color modeling lamp that goes from 3000-6000K
@@WesPerry thank you
it's amazing that your cat did not push the flash off the stool!
Haha. One would think! He stopped pushing things off tables years ago, thankfully.
Here in germany the 300 pro costs almost twice as much as the ad200. Thats too expensive for a not much stronger flash
Rip lol, in China, it cost only 50% more, around 420 usd, so very good deal.
Id rather just get a non ttl ad600 standard for similar price. Good review
👌🏻
I love cats , but this one being so close to the unit on the stool made me nervous
What’s the worst that could happen? 😉
Interesting video and you have some great cats!
😎👍🇨🇦
AD300 took a 7 foot fall with the QR 90cm / S2 Bracket and Cstand, flash took the brunt of the hit on the concrete floor, no issues, went through a 680 shot job the next day so in build, this thing rocks, hopefully you won't have to go through my panic and mishap to find out.
I dropped mine about 3 feet onto pavement and the bulb protective glass cover shattered, but not the bulb. Still works fine, but that protective cover is super hard to find in Canada. Still looking for a replacement.
@@WesPerry you can get it from B&H, model #AD R13 it's going for US10.
Unfortunately, all said and done, that would cost me close to $70 to get to my doorstep 🤦🏻♂️
Which one better? Ad200 or ad 300?
Better for what?
The AD300 is better in most ways, but can’t be modified with different heads, and is way more expensive.
Wich one better for portrait photography
What is opinion for v1 vs ad100
My question is which one better for portrait photography in low budget
@@WesPerry thanks sir
I love the maternity shots!
yup , overpriced by 100.00, your point about the ad600bm is perfect
I wonder, do the cats ever comment on their own portrait photos?
Everyone’s a critic 😸
Really good video. Thanks.
Great! Thanks!
I still have the ad360, and despite the size, based on the power and value, ad360 is also a good choice
Very guided video. Stay home stay safe 👍🙏🏻
Thanks for sharing.
Oh my! That cat is huge!! 😹
13:11 a man of culture
👀
"that's what she said" at about 13:12. Yes I caught that, haha! You da man!
Glad Someone caught it 🤣
@@WesPerry I can't believe I'm the only one to catch that, LOL!
correct, in Switzerland the Godox BM600 costs even less then 500 bucks. Thx 4 the vid and the cute boy and cat :-)
Maggie is the best model
Great video. Keep up the great work, Wes, and a great moment there, when you joined your wife for some epic shots.
Thank you for the cat size comparison😂
The one shocking, surprising aspect of your review is: how did you manage to keep your cats sitting quietly on that stool??
If I try with my cats, they would go anywhere EXCEPT staying on the stool.
A remarkably apt observation ;)
My cats are generally pretty well behaved, and usually quite interested in whatever I’m up to.
Bonus thumbs up for the kitties...
I love the light I got it last week so awesome selling all my ad200 and these I will go to war with elegant ,sexy , build like a tank is killer love it 😍 for us wedding photographers so nice took it out on a shoot a bracket had no 😮problems at all game changer there be lots of ad200 on eBay that’s for sure I give a big 10 overall small compact run and gun for us wedding photographers winner !!!! By a mile
I dunno man. A lot of people Love their AD200’s an awful lot! Especially those who make use of the AD-B2.
That being said, I would totally ditch mine for 300’s as well 😂
@@WesPerry For you personally would it be because of the slight power increase or something else?
Power and I also find the build quality and form factor to be better. The AD200 is super long, and more difficult to pack. With the 300 is fits easily where any lens would fit. Which is kindof the form factor most photography bags and cases are based around. So although the 200 is “technically” smaller volumetrically, the 300 is more compact.
Love the B roll every time. Lol
It’s what gets me out of bed in the morning! 😏
Not going to lie. I clicked because of the cat.
