They didn't even want to help the fire fighters and police who wound up with cancer and mesothelioma from the clouds of ash, asbestos, and debris that was everywhere during 9/11. The US is run by sociopaths who just flat out don't give a shit about me, you, or anyone else.
This veteran represents the reality of how the U.S. government treats its own citizens, there's no excuse for a man who put his life on the line for this country to be in this position. No excuse at all. I love my homeland of America, but goddammit I hate the way politicians run this place and treat the people
To those who don't understand why this was uploaded when the guy can hardly say anything coherent... that's (at least to my understanding) the point of the series. I feel that way about animals. People like this, make me do what I do. I own my own business helping low income individuals with disabilities find or keep housing and/or benefits and help make sure their whole team stays connected.. All kinds of kinds of people. I think I've worked with over a thousand now in the past decade or so. And you know what? It's an honor to be able to serve the people I do. While I get to stay up late on a Sunday watching this relaxing a littttttle more before I get up tomorrow morning to go to bat for this man and every vulnerable adult. If someone took the time with him he could be in his own supported living, so long as he chose to. I guarantee he wants the same kinds of things we all do. Food, shelter, water, clothes, and maybe if there's something left over maybe they wanna go to the arboretum and shit too. They're not not human and the stigma is hard. What you meant, and correct me if I am wrong, when you said "soul crushing", was that it's horrifying, overwhelming, scary, dangerous, monuments, and where does one begin and how does one know what to do? Well...that's why there's people who do what we do. My sister is an ER nurse. I tell her I'll try and talk someone off a bridge but if they jump you won't catch my social worker ass down there with all the newly found horrors and traumas. I'll call her if they jump but my job is to sort of be proactive. I hope you don't mind this dark metaphor with a splash of humor but it's illustrating just that we are all different and all very much alike at the same time.
There should not be one homeless veteran. Period. Hundreds of billions of our tax dollars sent all over the world, but our veterans are neglected and left bereft of decency. Shameful! Shameful! Shameful!!
not just money spent around the world but the u.s. health care system is the most costly per capita in the world, by far. lots of money there to take care of veterans.
Nobody can force veterans to accept the help that is offered. There are 100% service connected veterans pulling in $5k a month who choose to be on the streets.
@@leaper2294this is true. My mom’s ex boyfriend is an ex veteran. He came from a good family but CHOSE to hang with the wrong kids- getting into trouble stealing cars, breaking into churches, and using drugs and alcohol. He served for 10 years as a SeaBee and never saw combat. He slept with women and got drunk around the world for fun. Once out, he has essentially couch surfed and hung out at bars. He’s always been broke and unable to keep down a job. He had DUI’s and bad credit and still one of the happiest people I know. He has a bunch of health problems now due to years of alcoholism and cigarettes, and all his healthcare is covered by the VA. For whatever reason, he just started collecting nearly $7000 a month in benefits and he’s suing for back pay and should be getting a $500k settlement. He also was just approved for VA home loan for $300k at 6% despite him being unable to pay bills or budget. He’s a nice guy (except when drunk, he wouldn’t hurt us but his words are vicious, I even had him legally evicted from my mom’s for breaking her stuff all the time). I love him but he chose this irresponsible life. We live in an area where most people live comfortably on less than $3k a month and a very nice home can be bought for about $120k. I am sorry but I don’t think being a veteran should automatically grant someone to a lifetime of benefits. This dude has made a series of bad choices and they SHOULD have consequences.
I hope you find a nice place to rest Robert and be safe. I wish you all the best and you are a brave man. I'm angry that a Vet is living on the streets - he should be supported and comfortable in his twilight years.
He said he worked his whole life Mark. He said with horses. Bet he grew up on the farm he kept talking about. He talked about SSI and those asshole. When men in this state have to fight for anything to survive, it's gut wrenching 😢
I understand him. He was swimming in Cape Cod. He was talking about Monster energy drinks and how they are an expensive habit. He was gonna be sent to jail bit they cant care for him and they want him to work but he cant work. I wish I could translate it RT for ya. This is one of the best videos I’ve ever seen Mark do….. because it shows the harsh reality of what living on the streets can do to one’s mind and soul.
Often, mental illness leads to homelessness. We need to bring back our state hospitals. This is where people like this were taken care of before. Some people cannot stay on their meds by themselves.
@@TheFrancine07 No, I'm not. I don't think this is the problem here. These aren't symptoms of PTSD. War, and it's effects, is a whole other thing. Many people are traumatized by war and don't end up homeless with these types of symptoms.
He does you are right. BUT our government is more worried about helping people that either don’t want to work and live off the government instead or people coming here that don’t come the correct way. So so so sad. I wonder if maybe the military should do a walk out and see if maybe it’s changes the governments attitude. That’d be a scary day but I bet our veterans would be better taken care of and maybe just maybe our men and women wouldn’t be dying for a country that could care less about them. Majority of the men in my family serve and the VA is by far the worst medical I’ve ever witnessed. They are killing these men and woman and giving them awful care. Yet people with 💯 free medical I see get waaaay better care including free sex changes it’s disgusting. 🤮 America is more worried about every other country but not fighting for the ones that fight for us to live free.

Poor guy. No reason a vet should he on the street in America. Vietnam in particular destroyed so many family's I know of, including mine. My father, who is an amazing man and vet (served as a marine 68-69) was my best friend for all my life. Always talked to me about his time in the jungle, was totally open about. But slowly over the years it ate him up. He started isolating, refusing his meds. Then i started getting these calls where he was raging and suicidal. I was in my 30's by then and always traveling, but always made time to talk with him. I knew he was coming unwound. Broke my heart. Not long later he snapped, told me and my family to go fxck ourselves, and disappeared from our lives. I tried reaching out, no response. That was 8 years ago, and I since moved out of the US and have been gone traveling (I'm a photographer and teacher) living the expat life for 4 years now. I miss him every day. I hate war.
My dad was USMC from 66-70. I was 13 when I remember waking up and hearing him trying to climb my parents' bedroom wall. He would never speak to me about his experiences. In 1997, I visited Vietnam and I reported back to what I saw and how life moved on there. I wish my dad could've moved on too. He died very young, only 55. I turn 55 next month and he has been on my mind A LOT these days. He received disabled vet status posthumously in 2011. I was an expat for 10 years, teaching English in Japan for 8 and Brazil for 2. I am also a veteran (Ohio Army National Guard). I hate war. I come from a long line of military folk and I'm glad I am breaking the cycle with my sons. They can volunteer if they want to and technically they are obligated conscripts as citizens of Brazil (they are duals), but given how the VA has also not treated me for my own issues, I would be very unsettled if they became part of the military-industrial complex.
@@GenXrCist669My father was the same. Would not speak about it. Vietnam ruined our lives. He was a alcoholic and would beat his first and second wife. He beat my brother the most bc he was small. Years later as adults he sobered up a bit and felt bad for his treatment of the family. So we became closer. When we would take him to dinner if a African American or Asian or Hispanic person would be our server he would flip out and tell them he fought and killed people so they could serve him at this restaurant. Then when we took him to the grocery it was the same . Sometimes he couldn't even write a check we had to sign his name he was so lost in his flash back. Staring, growling at the cashier. My husband used to wear a chain on his wallet. My father flipped out on him and told him to never wear it around him. I decided to have a drink with my father that night. He finally told me some stories. He said I didn't mean to disrespect your man but the charlie used to wear chains on their neck with fingers or toes ears of his brothers in arms. Vietnam ruined so many families. So many fatherless children. Mine tried but he couldn't get the help he needed. Finally about 10 yrs before he passed at 65 from the damage alcohol did to him,he received a pretty substantial settlement from not being able to work all his life. He saved most of it only used what he needed to live. He left the rest to his 5 kids. Some people would hate him for what he did to us. I love him dearly.
As a MH nurse of Veterans i am in a constant range of heartbreak and joy when I can help my patients. I can also say I was once joyful and a social butterfly. Now I go to work and come home and isolate. My patients all have a story as to how they got to where they are. Many return frequently, some I never see again. The suicide of one of my patients destroyed me . I am broken but pull it together when I need to. 💔💔 It’s a shame that our “healthcare “ system is so broken that they do not trust us anymore. That you so much for all of these AMAZING STORIES!!!
Thank you for giving this man a place to talk. Even if its hard to understand him, its important we see what some of our Veterans are currently experiencing.
My uncle went to Vietnam .When he came back he disappeared . This year we found out he was in Newcastle in Australia living on the streets for the last 30years . He doesn’t speak at all . Family have tried bringing him home but he wants to stay where he has been living which is totally understandable . The trauma these young men went through .

This could've been my dad, but he died in 1999 at age 55, 12 years before the VA granted him full "disabled veteran" status posthumously. He slowly died from the aftereffects of PTSD. He was also born on Friday the 13th of 1944. I miss him.
@@janellenevarezgomez3935 well, it is hyperbole to say that it was PTSD itself that killed him, but it's everything that goes with it. Can someone in Santa Monica show this to the Veterans Services? Please let's get this poor man some help. Robert, thank you for your service. I am so sorry this is happening to you, unexcusable.
Mark, listen to him. He is opening up, but you cut him off and said "I don't understand what you're saying?" He told you he grew up in New York on a Farm. He spoke of going to the Cape (most likely Cape Cod), and swimming there. He told you he has children. He went on to say that he has a brother, who told his children he (Robert), is no good. He was talking to you about the energy drink Monster, & he likes the Coffee flavored one. Robert told you he is a Disabled Veteran. I noticed since Rebecca, you have detached yourself from your guests. This sometimes comes off cold and / or rude. Each guest that you interview, should not leave there feeling worse about themselves, no matter what condition they are in. My personal opinion only. May Peace be upon us all.
I got some of the stuff but why you are criticizing mark about what he hears or doesn’t hear seems off putting since it’s his interview. Be kind please.

I watch men like this and think "wow this could be my dad." He was in Vietnam, but I've never asked, and he's never talked about it. My significant other served in Iraq for 2 tours (never asked, never talks about it), and again, this makes me think, "It could be him." These men hold in so much. This one got me. 💔
They discovered him on the streets of CA. The CA weather keeps people alive due to the mild climate, so these predators come and "interview" him for clicks. SHAME
He said alot that can be understood but also alot of half sentences. here is a breakdown of what I could pick up on. He was born in new york he lived on a farm , his family took him swimming as a kid in capecod. His brothers a rascle. He was born on the 13th of June , it was a Friday, he wished it'd been a wensday, born on Friday the 13th is the cause of his troubles. ( Im pretty sure he was joking ) Its all mental health. He slept by that building under a tree in the park last night. Hamburgers , hotdogs, fries, but he throws it in the dumpster because he can't eat. He used to eat so fast it'd make your head spin. I dont touch food. No I quit drugs. Cigarettes and cigars. Cup a coffee and a monster drink. Dont be a cheap skate. No no friends. Bro Im so busted up, I cant work, Im a busted up Vet😢. I used to work with horses but lived like this most all of life. He was in love, but it didn't last long Got sent to the county jail. His friend Roger, he walked to get cigarettes with , they carved up his face. He was already beat and then they carved him...stay away from people. Then it fades out with that. Bone chilling ending . I pray to the God most high will use Marks platform to channel enough resources to save Robert from the streets. He doesn't belong there and it is heart wrenching to see this kind of abuse. Blessing to you Mark, for bringing Roberts situation to our attention, and for all the work you do. Its selfless and has been a huge help, even in my own personal recovery. You are an inspiration to many, Thank you Mark ❤! I did my best , I hope this is helpful and honors Roberts story..Peace and blessings to you all.
That’s great thanks. I picked up on the farm in NY. There were a lot of clear words but I couldn’t thread them together. I’ve supported adults like this and it’s surprising how quickly you start to understand their meaning making.
I finally figured out his speech by the end. I watched again and thought about writing out what he was saying. After a few sentences, I gave up on translation. It's a short interview, but he actually did answer Mark's questions in his own roundabout way ❤
I played this through my car stereo, ear against the speaker. I caught on to his story. It wasn't too hard to understand. I used to help a guy around town where I live, years ago..he spoke like this.
I think I understood him enough to understand his plight. I definitely heard “mental health” and “rehab”, I heard him talk about “hamburgers, hot dogs and fries” and eating from dumpsters. I heard “cigarettes” “cigars” “coffee” and “monster drink”. I also heard “worked all my life” and “horses”. Being in love didn’t “last long”. and that was just my first listen through. But to be fair, I communicate daily with a 2.5 year old and have to be the translator for the rest of the family, so perhaps that’s why 🤷♀️
As an Army vet of Iraq and Afghanistan myself…this video scares the ever-living shit out of me. A lot of us are living on a very, very fine line and we need some help. The VA just wants us to die, no one actually cares, we get looked at like bums or psychos when we do ask for help, so we just keep suffering without hope and without an end in sight.
Being treated badly by the people and places set up to help can be just as seriously distressing, emotionally and psychological injurious, as presenting medical issues. I hope you find a way to get what you need from different sources. And that you don't turn to drugs for relief.

💔😢 This interview was heartbreaking. First let me say "Thank you Robert for your service" This hit close to home. This could have been my daddy or my husband. My father. who just recently passed was a disabled WW2 Navy veteran who was injured at Pearl Harbor. When he passed he had a beautiful military service. My husband who is now 73 served in the Army and was in Vietnam... a useless and senseless war that claimed the lives and minds of so many who served during that era. I looked at this veteran and it brought me to tears. This could have been my husband.
Money goes towards wars, not people. Your taxpayer money hasn't fed anyone, but certainly killed many. .

Often, mental illness leads to homelessness. We need to bring back our state hospitals. This is where people like this were taken care of before. Some people cannot stay on their meds by themselves.
And war….youre neglecting this very important point.
@@TheFrancine07 No, I'm not. I don't think this is the problem here. These aren't symptoms of PTSD. War, and it's effects, is a whole other thing. Many people are traumatized by war and don't end up homeless with these types of symptoms.

That’d be a scary day but I bet our veterans would be better taken care of and maybe just maybe our men and women wouldn’t be dying for a country that could care less about them. Probably lying about being in the service
I hate war.
Wow, what a story you have. I am truly sorry about your dad.
I am so sorry about your Dad💔
My father would also say in the jungle but never be serious or give details.
It’s a shame that our “healthcare “ system is so broken that they do not trust us anymore.
That you so much for all of these AMAZING STORIES!!!

His brothers a rascle.
He was born on the 13th of June , it was a Friday, he wished it'd been a wensday, born on Friday the 13th is the cause of his troubles. ( Im pretty sure he was joking )
Its all mental health.
He slept by that building under a tree in the park last night.
Hamburgers , hotdogs, fries, but he throws it in the dumpster because he can't eat.
He used to eat so fast it'd make your head spin.

No I quit drugs.
Cigarettes and cigars.
Cup a coffee and a monster drink.
Dont be a cheap skate.
No no friends.

I used to work with horses but lived like this most all of life.
He was in love, but it didn't last long
Got sent to the county jail.
His friend Roger, he walked to get cigarettes with , they carved up his face. He was already beat and then they carved him...stay away from people.
Then it fades out with that.

Robert unfortunately is not the only one who has more or less been thrown away by the USA after service to our country. How can we throw away the men and women who protected us through their military service? Society could care less about all those poor broken souls who are living all around us... sleeping on sidewalks, eating out of trash cans, begging on street corners. Shame on us! 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
Speak for yourself 🙄 🖕
@@firstlast8258I was speaking for my self! 😊
I love and i kinda hate this channel at the same time. It brings attention to people like Robert, but it also makes me very emotional about it 😢
There shouldn't be any homeless person in the USA, let alone a homeless veteran. The country has failed these people massively and needs to do something to get the people off the streets and away from drugs 😢
So heartbreaking. This man served this country and this is how he is treated. So awful. My heart goes out to him.
💚💜❤ A world where people are not cared for . It is heart breaking.

This interview is heartbreaking 💔 xxx
this really is so sad...the very people who fought, protected, and kept are country together are left vulnerable homeless and in clear need of mental help, how is little to nothing being done about this?
Just heartbreaking the way Veterans are treated in this country… 😢💔
