  • Do you like smelling formal? Today I am talking about eight elevated fragrances that I reach for when I am contemplating a formal or black tie event.
Apologies for the autofocus, it was really playing up that day, and I never even noticed until editing weeks later!

I love that you and Kicki found each other's channels and have both mentioned one another. I remember when I first found Kicki's videos, she reminded me of you and you remind me of her. The passion and the detail you both convey about the perfumes you are describing. You're like the northern and southern hemisphere sides of the same coin! 👏👏👏

exactly. I love both very much. Both are responsible for getting me away from all the crazy hype hype of the super influencers and introduced me to decants and samples to save my pocketbook. Even samples and decants get expensive, but holy moly if I had continued to listen the hype I wouldn't have a house or car!

Terribly sorry to hear about the OJ bottle Cherie. 😔 Broken bottles are bad enough, but a discontinued fragrance...and a 120 mL to boot! Rats. French Leather probably my newest muse from Memo. Hello Cherie,
I am so sorry your OJ bottle broke. That's so sad!
I tested French Leather last year and really enjoyed it. It's one on my wish list for a future purchase. I would wear it more regularly as I don't think of it as being formal. However, I do live in a cold climate and that likely effects my perception of it.
I think for me POAL is one of my more formal perfumes. I would also say Oud Satin Mood Extrait, Oud Bouquet are also ones that wouldn't be every day fragrances and I would wear them for more formal occasions. Rich spicy ambers would likely lean more formal for me as well. Lyric Woman is absolutely more of a formal scent in my mind. I do enjoy it. I want to get my nose on Opera eventually, it sounds like it could be one I would enjoy.
Thanks for your video and keep well! 💛

There are a few fragrances I find are more suitable for dressing up. I like Mefisto by Xerjoff, but I always feel like I should be wearing a suit with that one. Portrait of a Lady is also one that I don't find is a casual scent, along with Epic Woman by Amouage. Great video, Cherie!

So exciting to be mentioned by another youtuber, I think it is the first time! For me Opera has a spectacular opening, almost like fireworks! It is sparkly. But also love the drydown. Don't get any play-doh.
I have tried both newer and older formulas of Memoir Woman side by side and they are really similar.
When are you going to France? Is it a perfume trip or just a private trip? I might go there this summer and if so it will be between the 22nd and 30th of July. My youngest son is going to camp, I am so excited! As a widow, I have not been on many adult vacations lately.

Yay Kicki! Lovely to see you over here. Im so excited for you for your holiday! Where in France will you go?
We are going in September - we are getting married in Provence! It was kind of a spontaneous decision, which makes zero sense but I can’t wait. I am going to Fragranze in Florence first so that will be super fun. We aren’t going to Paris or anything so I won’t get to visit all of the flagship fragrance stores but we ARE going to Grasse and I am sure I will find lots of perfume on the way!

Really really really enjoyed this video. Maybe you could do a video on what does "cheap smelling" smell like vs "expensive." I wear what I like. I just happen to like "old grandma" scents because that's what has influenced my tastes. But honestly what defines what? I like Juicy Couture -- maybe not for formal events, but so many people dismiss it as trashy. Why?

    • @TheTopNote
      @TheTopNote  Месяц назад +1

What a great idea! Pep and I attempted to address an angle of this on a recent live stream. We were talking about “value” and how price doesn’t dictate quality but that also, when we are sniffing things it’s impossible for us to really know whether “quality” ingredients have been used. At the end of the day it’s what smells good to you! Also re Juicy Couture - I bet most people would really enjoy those fragrances if they smelled them on others and didn’t know what it was. They are very likeable scents. When they were all the rage I was not into sweet scents at all, and I wouldn’t wear them myself but I enjoy sweet scents on others. I wonder how I would feel about them now? I truly don’t like their packaging though. Thank you for watching and commenting! 😍

Such a helpful video. I thought it was my skin chemistry that turns so many traditionally feminine scents sour on me but maybe it is the Queensland heat. I'll try and limit my orange blossom style frags to cooler days and evening wear and see if that helps. Thanks.

I smashed a bottle of Bottega Venetta in my bathroom a while back. The worst feeling, ruined my entire evening. 😟. It's my formal go to,. having said that I would wear it other times, but the majority of people just don't like it. I wear it when my boss is over stepping the mark and being unreasonable. It seems to send a strong message, a bit witchy. Needless to say I replaced it immediately. Thanks for another great video.

I guess we all have different thoughts about how a formal perfume should smell,to me Chergui is a everyday perfume, perfect for a summet day, I live in Norway and the summer here is quite cold btw😅 For a daytime formal scent I would pick something with iris, maybe Infusion from Prada or Bois d'iris from the Different Company. For evening I would maybe pick something sweeter like Chanel No 5 Parfum or Madly from MariaLux.

Hi, to me Halfeti is a diluted version of Lancome Magie Nior. Chopard Oud Malaki and Halfeti are very similar but the longivity is less with Chopard.

  • @ciganyweaverandherperiwink6293

As soon as you said that 'you've never smelled anything quite like it' about Rose Barbare I scribbled it on my bedside notepad as one to prioritise testing next time I'm in Harrods. For YOU to say something like, wow, it must really be unusual. I'm so intrigued! As for Halfeti, can I recommend the body wash instead of the fragrance? I have it and it's lovely, though my husband uses it predominantly. Lastly, if you want to experience an amber-forward fragrance that has an 'oil garage petrol smell' (which you reluctantly drew a parallel between when describing a facet of the top notes in Halfeti), then Ambre Loup by Rania J is one to look out for. It's bizarre how many compliments I get when I'm wearing it as it's a room divider I would have thought, the total opposite of an easy wear crowd pleaser. I wonder which fragrance has the same entirely unexpected effect on the general public when YOU wear it? As in, you'd think it would be off-putting and challenging for wearing during an average day running errands but instead, you're startled by just how many people stop to compliment you on it.

If I break a big bottle of OJ perfume I would be depressed for days 😅 I like and don't like Lyric woman, i find it very vintage and somehow it does not suit me (like Chanel 5) but I have a big decant of it because it has something I miss whenever I run out of the sample and it is soooo elegant. I also follow kicki and bought a decant of Opera because of her, I get the fruitiness but then it smells on me or to me like a big ylang ylang dessert and I am not able to wear this perfume because it wears me instead. When I want to feel more elegant I choose Iris Malikhan😊

I was wearing a new-to-me perfume and didn't realize the fabulous sillage I was smelling randomly on the street was me! Haha!! Another Xerjoff perfume that smells leathery, slightly peachy-soapy and like a perfume, is Lua. I blind-bought it a couple of years ago and at first, I thought it was weird and not me but it grew on me. It's a bit formal and I think if you can get a sample, it's worth trying,.
