Got Archfiend of the Dross in my sealed pool today. Played it three times: exiled immediately, countered, permanently tapped down after hitting them once. No regrets, but oh man! Luckily I still won those games. In the third I won when it had 1 oil counter left. It was stressful!
My first thought after seeing Archfiend of the Dross was that it would make for cool Harmless Offering shenanigans, but I guess attacking with it also works.
I absolutely love the ecstatic positivity you bring towards the new cards and whatever was going on in the games. Really gets me excited for the new set as well.
I gotta say, even tho the deck was amazing, the highligth of this video is how happy you were playing it. My cold boomer magic heart gets a little fuzzy seeing another person of culture enjoying turn 3 arena into turn 4 obliterator or big flying demon
I honestly don't think the set is gonna make Black much more OP. Neither Archfiend nor Obliterator are better than Sheoldred, and Phyrexian Arena isn't better than Fable. So the Rakdos or Grixis decks change very little.
@Brackish Like I said, monoW is superior. Also midrange vs midrange there is next to comparison sadly. Best spot removal, by far the best board wipes, crazy threats that double as value engines like Serra Paragon and Ao, plus go wide+anthem utility with the fucking announcements. It can really do it all, B can't.

Thanks for reminding me of one of my favorite standard combos of all time: turn 3 desecration demon, turn 4 go to combat, get the counter (every time), follow up with garruk primal hunter and draw 7

I'm gonna build it with churning reservoir, Urabrask's forge and burn sweepers (brotherhood's end + burn down the house). T4 dross t5 burn down the house seems like it could be dirty.
We know how difficult Sheoldred is to remove at 5 toughness and we know how long she can stay on the battlefield sometimes. 1+1= 2. Archfiend only really needs 2 turns to win and 1 turn to do devastating damage. It's not always better but in an aggressive deck it kinda is. However if the best decks in the meta play no creatures then Archfiend becomes way worse.
I know this video is supposed to be about Archfiend but I just cannot get over how inSANE Glissa is. Like. A 3 power first strike deathtoucher, thats basically just another way of saying "invincible in combat". Plus it gets extra bonus value if it's unblocked. Crazy!

You see archfiend of dross, and I say 'you're very glad that Heartless Act isn't in the format anymore". Honestly, it feels like another in the line of 'give black green creatures with flying' that's been ongoing since Doom Whisperer and Spawn of Mayhem back in the War of the Spark block, but that's not a bad thing.
Very happy to see phyrexian arena working nicely for you in these games. Would you consider adding some more triomes to support drag to the bottom as a sweeper?

Before watching the video : I think Archfiend will overperform. But the life loss from Arena + Vraska will be significant. You probably need some constant sources of lifegain or life drain if you're doing the Arena + Vraska thing imo. And as boring as it sounds Sheoldred seems perfect for those two cards in particular. But screw Sheoldred. :)
After watching: Life loss was irrelevant because there was no aggro deck haha. But yeah Archfiend looks good. Not worse than Sheoldred, just different. You play Sheoldred if you want to grind. You play Archfiend if you want to destroy.
I played against a multicolored version of this the other day in standard and plowed it with my homebrew u/w control. It was a very difficult game. The dude Obliterator/fight combo'd me and killed a creature and forced me to sac a 5 cost artifact and 2 of my lands on like turn 7. I'm sure I'll be seeing this stuff again. If I didn't know my deck so well it would have been an instant concede.
Very few things are more satisfying than curving a phyrexian arena into an obliterator. Unfortunately none of these cards are good right now 😕. Maybe after rotation, who knows?
Ok so never NEVER run this in brawl or commander lol alot of decks run act of cruelty you can drop it for a ton of mana, then for 2 mana you lose the game

Heartless Act removing 3 counters on Dross means you’d lose the game on the spot. Bound to happen in mirror match.
