You'd find that the technique you learn to play jazz (while hard) would actually make your drumming excel in a way you'd never thought possible. Learning to play off the kick drum - rather than digging in for example can greatly change your tone in a positive way. Would always advise learning jazz drums
@@skoomabuffer5665 Very good question. Well, jazz has a lot of components to it. But the main one is feel, right? It can't sound like you're playing a rock gig when you do a triplet fill for example. A basic example would be the Moeller technique, (probably the most important technique to nail) by practising that technique it's easy to move quicker around the kit and play accents at the same time. You can then export this technique into really solid fills like 'Use somebody by kings of Leon (after the build up section)' . Honestly if I could write down all the techniques in one comment i would. But it would be massive and I still haven't learnt it all. BUT the stuff i have learnt has increased my stamina during shows and developed my style. Id advise you to look at some real wizard drummers like JD Beck or Yussef Dayes and you'll see how good jazz drumming can sound. To be as good as them is the end goal tho, no one can sound as good as them straight away and that's ok. You just gotta practice n the Moeller technique is the BEST place to start and i wish i learnt it way earlier, same with feathering the bass drum. They're simple but it'll carry you for the rest of your drumming life
Remember that nobody is born with the ability to play like this. It takes many many hours of sounding terrible. Years. Make sure your drums are tuned properly and you’re in a comfortable seating position and it will come with time. -Unsolicited Advice
I’ve been drumming for 16 years (I’m 20) and there’s no way in hell I could play to that sheet music. You’d give it to me and I’d start playing slipknot
@Brent Haskins I was always more interested in punk and metal drumming so I learned by ear. I do know how to read sheet music from band class and stuff but it’s definitely one of my weaknesses!
You should practice more sight reading then. From one metal drummer to another, it’ll make you more well-rounded and push you and challenge you. I can play every slipknot song there is out there, but nothing pushes your musicality more than reading songs and playing classic styles like Latin and jazz. Keep it up. You’re extremely young still.
if you can play metal you can get this down eventually. this is a lot of flashy techniques and ghost notes, but it makes sense if you're able to subdivide and naturally feel the latin groove. you don't even need the sheet music either, he didn't start with it he transcribed it!! you could easily do this or your own version by starting with basics :) that is if you want it. if not it's always amazing to appreciate other styles
Since I’m still new I changed up the intro a bit and play snare on the and of 2 3 and 4 while maintaining triplets on the base drum and 4/4 step on high hat and use the shoulder of the stick on the cowbell on ride.
In the first couple notes are you playing the ghost notes too? It’s so subtle and I can’t hear it or see it here so I’m wondering if it’s even necessary for me playing this song
hey i’ve always wondered how drummers read sheet music. is it like your own clef and different “notes” correspond to different parts of the drum? what if your drum kit has a shit ton of cymbals or something, how would you know which one to use?
You’re right on about notes corresponding to different parts on the drums. For cymbals, there’s usually a place on the staff for the most used cymbals (i.e. ride and crash) but sometimes when you have more cymbals, you choose which one to use. Idk if that made sense but there’s a set notation for the common shit and from there you pretty much play what cymbal fit best in the song
In this video, the main ride is 21" byrne cymbals vintage light ride. Hi hats are 14" Sabian Manhattan jazz, crash is zildjian 18" thin dark crash. However, now I am a byrne cymbals artist so that is what I am playing in my more recent videos.
When your brain automatically adds in the bass line after the video ends

And this is why I don’t play jazz drums, but to each their own. Also that was awesome

They are the stock heads that came with the drums. Some kind of coated aquarian - they feel pretty thick.
