0:12 It's only just struck me now that Arthur pulls a Christmas cracker... _by himself._ 😂 Such a blink-and-you'll-miss-it joke, but it says so much about how checked out everyone is. 1:20 That sad, little tree. 🤣
@@matthewallen445 Well, at a British (or Irish as well) Christmas dinner, everyone has a Christmas cracker at their place at the table. You pull it with someone else and whoever gets the bigger part of the cracker gets the stuff inside. It's impossible to tell which is the short end that sets off the snap in the cracker, so it's pure chance. The contents are typically a paper crown, a piece of paper with some corny jokes on it and a small prize, e.g. a paper fan, toenail clippers (yes, really), a puzzle, etc. There's a lot of variety and quality depending on the crackers. I got a coiled wire egg cup one year. The joke is that Steve, Malcolm and Grand-Santa are just too tired/self-absorbed to even bother pulling the other end with Arthur. It's sad. And funny. But in a sad way. 😅
@@matthewallen445 British Christmas Dinners always have crackers. They're a kind of game. You and another member of your family or a friend hold onto one end of the cracker and pull. One end is designed to split before the other, and there's a tiny silver fulminate match strip inside the cracker, so when the ends are pulled apart there's a tiny bang and snap. Whoever pulls the longer half wins the prizes inside, which are always a small toy, a piece of paper with a funny joke written on it, and a colourful paper crown. This moment is sad in the film because Crackers are always pulled in pairs, but the family are so tired, uninterested, and dismissive of Arthur that he pulls the crackers by himself on Christmas.
@@matthewallen445 Christmas Crackers are supposed to be opened by two people holding each end. Here, Arthur does it himself because of at this point of the film, his family have issues with each other and argue, leaving Arthur (the only one to be the most "Jolly") to be the one to open it. From Wikipedia: Christmas crackers are festive table decorations that make a snapping sound when pulled open, and typically contain a small gift, paper hat and a joke. They are part of Christmas celebrations in the United Kingdom, Ireland and Commonwealth countries such as Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa. A cracker consists of a segmented cardboard tube wrapped in a brightly decorated twist of paper with a prize in the centre,[1] making it resemble an oversized sweet-wrapper. The cracker is pulled apart by two people, each holding an outer chamber, causing the cracker to split unevenly and leaving one person holding the central chamber and prize.[1] The split is accompanied by a mild bang or snapping sound produced by the effect of friction on a shock-sensitive, chemically impregnated card strip (similar to that used in a cap gun). One chemical used for the friction strip is silver fulminate.
I just love this dinner scene. The entire family in a nutshell. Though loving(to some degree), they are quite dysfunctional(not horrid kinds in real life).

For a "Legacy Character Santa" movie, think it's kinda genius that we not only see Santa and the guy that's suppose to be Santa, but also the previous retired Santa, creating a even greater dynamic between everyone. :D
