I have found Milo Lines to be the best insightful teacher in golf. I've learned a great deal from him. And I appreciate the time and effort that he employs to help all of us " lots to improve " fellows.
For me, and this is just me... I find that when I sequence properly and unwind the hips FIRST while keeping my upper body relatively passive, that stretch reflex kicks in and like was said in the video, the hips PULL the upper body around to impact - which of course we're evolved to do bio-mechanically. In other words, with proper sequencing from ground up, I don't have to even TRY to open my torso/shoulders/whatever, it just happens automatically. In fact, when I actually TRY to rotate my torso independently, I get out of sequence and hit poor shots. This is another exceptional breakdown of the why/how of the golf swing - love it!
I was very fortunate that I met an old school pro 30 years ago. Who told me body will feel like it is focused towards the target for the motion . And the arms counter that by slotting like throwing the ball side arm. That resistance he showed me back than always made me slot the club naturally. And had had a huge baseball background like you milo . It’s so much easier to do this naturally than forcing it
The way he explains technique is absolutely astonishing. So thoughtful towards the game improvement players. I’m thinking about the yearly membership. I wonder if the person who responds is going to be Milo or one of his instructors???
I think I have been mislead in the past about turning hips and trying to keep shoulder in check towards impact. This is good teaching. I sometimes have a hard time thinking about chest movement. For me it is easier to imagine my right upper arm attached to side of chest rotating all the way through .
Looking down the line, if you draw a line on the shaft plane at impact and a line on the shoulder tilt when the club reaches just past waist high in the follow through, the lines will be near parallel! The club is a bit ahead of the shoulders so they don't "match" at impact but they are turning on parallel planes.
Milo I've also noticed you have very good head rotation through impact. Do you try to do this and do you find this helps your overall rotation? Are you focusing on the ball with both eyes, or do you see it through your peripheral vision in your right eye?? Either way I think a video on head rotation and what the eyes are doing would be beneficial. I haven't seen anything good on RUclips that explains this. Keep up the good work much appreciated and when I'm down in Arizona I'll swing by for a lesson.
Excellent observation Chris and I'll definitely get a video together on this! Some great players have had their head open up through impact. Sorenstam, Stenson, Duval, DJ to name a few. It can definitely help some.
Thanks Milo if I set the wrist angle on back swing can I just pin my left arm to my chest and rotate my chest? take the arms and hands out of the swing
Milo, This is a little late since you published this video, but I do have a comment. I was a high school quarter back and I lettered in tennis in college(I went to an engineering school that had no football team). As a result I know a few thing about the chest arm relationship you discuss in the video. From what I learned, it is not so important to focus on the relationship of the hands to the arms as it is to focus on the fact that the chest and upper torso , with all their muscle mass, are literally pulling the arms in the downswing, adding speed and power. Of course, at some point the arms will be "flung" off the chest and away from the upper torso by the forces being imposed by this rotational action. That is why when I throw a football or swing a tennis racket, my chest always leads, because it is pulling my right arm and causing it to speed up considerably. That is why I think your viewers should be less concerned about relative positions of the chest and arms and more concerned that the chest and torso should be rotating to pull the arms until they are literally flung away from the chest and away from the upper torso.
Unwinding starts from the ground, uo through the knees, pelvis and lastly the chest, drawing the free hinging lagging shoulders and controlled arm structure to inertial unstoppable release....
Milo, what are your hands’ role in this drill? To just stay passive and let the body do the work to move the club? Or are you actively using them in the release to create club speed?
@@MiloLinesGolf what is insane (and I know my phone is watching me) is that I was working on opening up my chest last night. And then this video pops up.
You guys continue to bring great content, which I forget to implement on a regular basis. I’m consistantly the shortest hitter but the straightest, man I would give up the middle of the fairway for 40 yards or so.
I too suffer from this same issue. Good swing stays on plane but lacks distance and power. My coach has me working on getting a stiff left leg and chest turning to the sky. I find this very difficult to achieve
Milo...serious question Correct me if I'm wrong here, but your release is a Dustin Johnson type hold off release, with the chest parallel to the shaft into impact....and your head is turned to be looking past the ball, quite a bit. Question: Are you right eye dominant? It seems if the turn into the ball you suggest is accomplished, the right eye dominant player will still have his "eye on the ball", but the left eye dominant players dominant eye will be out of position..well off the ball, almost looking to the sky. Valid point? And if so, your move becomes a real difficulty for a left eye (lead side eye) player. Would enjoy your comments or a vid on this. Thanks for all the great input.
Hi Milo, I thought you could help me with one question. It is about after impact. Namely, I try yo use my body to swing through. My question is related particularly to head but also to my upperbody. I know that at impact the head in general stays above the ball. Immediatley after impact and up to 3 o clock does the head go forward towards the target or stays behind to some extent where it is. Thank you so much.
Hi guys, started adopting your swing pattern and damn its hard but going to persist, at the moment I'm hitting 2 out of 10 balls well, not going to give up because when I do strike those 2 balls feels effortless and they go straight as a bullet . . .
Ive worked hard on chest rotation in the past,But now ive managed to load/ignite my Lats (Right on backswing, left through the ball) is my prefered method to achieve this.
The release is more a byproduct. The shallowing of the club coupled with wrist extension and forearm supination helps close the face early as opposed to having to do it late.
Thanks for the video. My question is how are you shaping shots? The problem I have with the very "body" oriented thinking is I lose track of how to work the ball. Is this feel/thought process strictly for encouraging a quicker club speed?
I work shots by altering the setup which changes the path to face relationships. The motion I teach makes for as stable a club face as possible with lots of speed
some good thoughts there, it seems for me when i'm hitting my best shots it's like i feel the body rotation leading the way and powering and guiding the action and ball direction, maybe like i'm syncing up the chest rotation with the club face.
Milo, I have this exact problem and I'm not sure how to fix it... I'm trying many things, but when I go back to the ball I'm still hitting with both of my hands right in front of me... Do you have other videos about this or that may help with this ?

Hi Milo, really great demonstrations. How about if I start my downswing with my chest all the way to the opening it at impact and after ? When I do this motion with chest, I eliminate this raising up etc...I really would like to hear your opinion....Thank you so much...
I am trying to use for my downswing initiation my chest (and not my hips) and try to rotate it through the ball so that I have more rotation. I feel like chest rotates my body more than just my hips. What are your thoughts? Thank you.
Being open at impact and square at address should we either have a strong grip or grip the club about 45deg closed at address so we have a square club face at impact. Otherwise we’ll slice the ball.
most that I have seen, even in Milo's vids, is his chest is open but not as much as some people may get the idea of. Definitely open though. look at 0:14....
The shoulders appear fairly square which makes the chest look less open than it actually is. According to gears my chest is 48* open with 7 iron and more than 50* open with driver
They will appear fairly square given the left shoulders positioning with the left hand on the club, but when measured on 3d they are open slightly amongst the best players.
I can open my chest and hips up quite a bit in downswing, but I find that if it's my swing thought then it starts opening up way too early/fast in DS and gets way ahead of my arms and the club (feel sorta stuck and disconnected).
@@MiloLinesGolf Sounds about right. My trail elbow does tend to get away from my body too much at top of backswing (but my arm is on the shoulder plane, and I don't suck the club inside on takeaway).
How about repeatable solid contact? Setup is square. The more open at impact, the more side bend needed to get to the ball. Variable side bend means unpredictable tops and fat shots. How do you maintain a consistent measurement to the ball from setup to open impact?
Front bend is converted to side bend so your inclination stays relatively constant. This pattern significantly easier to time than throwing the club down at the ball
Love your swing Milo, but can’t understand how you can see more of your glove strap at impact that you do at address. If it was me the face would be wide open, what don’t I get?
very instructive-but not sure about the biological distinction being made at one point about shoulders not being as open as the chest. The arm in its shoulder socket is one thing, but I do not see my shoulder being distinct or separate from my chest as the golfer turns through the forward swing.
If one can't have the club fall inside then this move is complete death, hence the reason most don't do it. If you rotate to early the club goes outside the line and you're screwed. You guys feel the club release naturally in the downswing but I would guarantee most people trying to do this are choking that grip and the club will not release. Theoretically I love what Milo teaches, Gankas etc but there are niuances to the feeling that just don't get covered and I don't see any recreational golfers achieving it.
If your chest doesn’t open you’ll quickly run out of right arm trying to get back to the ball. If your idea is the shoulders should be closed or “square” at impact you need to understand the chest is open and pay special attention to what he says about the appearance of the shoulders being square because of their independent movement.
