Chromebooks are fantastic little machines. I used one for a few years of my bachelors degree. I rarely came across something my chromebook just literally couldn’t do for me. They ones I used were even decently powerful enough to run various emulators on. With an nVidia Tegra processor, I should expect that to easily run PS1 games, and might even handle some GameCube games, in the Android version of Dolphin. If Eli has inherited your love of classic macs, you might even be able to emulate OS9 on it.
I picked up 2 chrome boxes for the kids at $ 25. Out of support, but they run all the school apps with no issues. I doubled the ram and its snappy. The great thing is you change one machine it pushes to the second. With 20 plus apps it saves so much time. You can set at app to have a icon on desktop and have it run in its own window.
I have a chrome book from school which is almost exactly like this except it’s all dark grey. Also it has a Qualcomm snapdragon processor. Great for portability and school work.
Hey man, yeah sorry i had to print the specs on lined paper, i ran flat out of paper, i do advise you dont keep that ram in the plastic tub however! ill follow up with replies to this comment as im watching!
I included a brand new charger as if kids gonna be using it, best to give it a best case scenario, the ONLY issue is it needs a battery change at some point, everything else is perfect
I believe you could install Ubuntu ARM to a microSD and use it on the ChromeBook as a full OS as opposed to ChromeOS if you wanted to do some tinkering. Unsure about Teams support on ARM however, my only ARM kit is a Raspberry Pi I use as a Plex server.
it only kinda works, before i sent the chromebook to tom i tried this with ubuntu and debian, its not actually truly running on the hardware its more semi virtualised and runs very slowly
tbh, the Chromebook reminds me of the iBook G3 Clamshell. it really is nice. i used to own a chromebook as my daily until it just wasn't enough and i got given a MacBook Unibody Mid 2010, and upgraded to a Pro 2012 (what i'm currently watching this on) Also, thanks for another great video Tom!
As a HP service tech I can say most of the damage of Chromebook out of warranty is not worth fixing, as a new Chromebook is just €100 á €200. But hardware wise it is quite easy.
The batteries are cheap enough online to buy and sell install pretty quickly :) 30 on a battery or considerably more on a new Chromebook, makes a lot of sense to repair :)
Nice unexpected video and I am sure, it is not too complicated for a young child. I always looked at Chromebooks but never really had a good reason to buy one. However... I've got a quite usable ARM laptop now. ;) 😄
Hey Tom, Eli will be chuffed to bits, what a fantastic laptop for him to use for his homework. I can't believe how time has flown, Eli is doing homework! Few little things. A: Trust you to Brick it! B: What a clever idea using key tags to label up ur Pen Drives, I am gonna do that from now on! I need to find my Win10 recovery pen drive! C: Check your e-mail when you can please, I have emailed you :-)
Will you be getting any of the new M1 Macs? Im thinking of getting the Mac Mini to replace my 2x late 2012 minis, as i use 1 as a Plex server and the other for my work. But im hoping it will be fast enough to do everything on the one machine.
Tom, I have had a horrible experience with the screen magnifyer. It will make the computer unusable. I just want d to give this heads up from a legally blind user. Sorry if this gets messed up, I am typing this out on a 6 year old iPad Mini.
Don't think I'll ever buy a Chromebook. Really not a fan. Underpowered, expensive for what they are - and with an operating system which is fundamentally gimped. There is no reason not to buy a less expensive, more powerful laptop like an old Latitude or a ThinkPad which infinitely more power and better build quality for the price. You can even dualboot ChromeOS and Windows on there and, you know, actually have a USABLE computer. A friend recently asked me what computer he should buy. I told him the exact computer he should go for, with a 5th gen i5 and Windows 10. He bought a crappy, more expensive Celeron chromebook anyway. That's when my mind was made up to not give advice to people that wont listen anyway. The only instance in which a chromebook makes sense to me is for a kid (like you've done Tom). Past 13 I think they're still pretty useless but as a kid just getting used to a computer they're not too bad. I'd have taken the G3 as a kid tho haha. My first operating systems were XP and Vista, and I'll be forever grateful because they actually taught me how to use a computer properly - which has become indispensable since. Using a chromebook, I'd have ended up more technologically illiterate like a lot of people just a year or two younger than me, that just know how to use their iPhone. Anyway yeah that's my TED talk. Not a fan of Chromebooks. If I got given one you can bet I'll be putting Windows or a better Linux distributor on it despite how crappy and slow it runs.
Is that a Casio f91w on your wrist Tom? Very cool!
Great video Tom. The Chromebook looks awesome, ideal for the intended use. Keep up the great work :D
yeah, HP doing a really good job in the education edition. I think the powerful Mediatek SoC used in the device is also so good.
That's an awesome lot of cool stuff! The box of RAM would come in very handy for future projects!
Oh Tom! Of course you bricked it :p
Wait, you're back? Yes lad
Ha your first born is already in school Tom!!!! How time is flying. I hope you and your precious family is doing well. Your friend across the pond.

I love chrome os but never could get my self to but a dedicated machine, so I got the iso offline and run it in a VM on my laptop. Works a treat!

The fact Eli is old enough to get homework is crazy... When did I get old?

My cousins Jacob and Kayla have Chromebooks as well and my 18 year old cousin Morgan, a cute young blonde lady by the way, got a MacBook Pro

Chromebook definitely not worth repairing since they die quickly then use them plus there strictly internet which I don’t like
First :D
Who asked?
