Those fancy magnets and sliding components look like they'd drive up the costs for the phone. I'd forget about making the individual pieces look pretty and just give the phone a nice solid case that encloses all those removable parts.
I agree with Slayer, I think customizing the individual pieces would be costly and I think they should create case that is customizable. This would be cheaper and would probably look a lot better than individual pieces.
Davin Turner thats kinda the point yet giving us a huge potential of future growth. Most people or reviews don't like the look this might solve that problem.
It has a toggling magnet on it that keeps them in place from what I understand. So I think you can just lock the modules into place and unlock them after.
They should make so when the phone is on, the magnets are active and hold them and when the phone is off, the magnets inactive and you can take them out.
This project has piqued my interest for a wee while now. I have my doubts that big manufacturers will run with this...but it would be amazing if they did.
muhammed shayan Its not like the pieces will fall off every time you pick them up, magnets can be very powerful, and the magnets will have to be switched off when you replace parts.
I would try it out, but I suggest them making cases or something that will secure the chips together without any falling off problems or any concerns to the user of the phone.
Yes. At least a better locking mechanism (as cool as the magnets are). Imagine using the phone and you accidentally slide the battery out, or drop the phone.
Sub Ripper I do believe the lock function makes it impossible for you to take it out, unless you force it really hard but at that point you will break the frame anyway
I said it was a great idea when they first came up with it. Do you know how nice it will be; to be able to replace any broken part on the phone without having to replace the whole phone? Something tells me this phone is gonna be a killer among all people. I think the majority of people are going to love this phone. As long as ARA gives the people what they want. For myself; I would like to see you compete with other smartphones in terms of latest software. A lot of ram, storage expansion, resolution, great front & back camera with DIS, finger scanner, a great removable battery with super charge speed, Lollipop 5.1.1, and an Octa-core Processor. If it at least comes with this; I would definitely buy it. The concept of the blocks is great as long as you can accommodate all the updated software. I'm sure your designers can come up with some beautiful designs. I wish all the best. May you succeed in your project. Good bless.
Nah, stupid techtubers would just criticize it to oblivion and just say, I won't recommend this to anyone, it's cool, but no. They'll also just glorify folding phones even more while using this a bad example.
this is actually pretty cool. its like a phone you can custom like a pc. I would def hope theres a part that is an upgraded soundcard so i can have super hq audio on the go
This could never work. Mobile phone industry is based on consumers buying a whole, expensive phone and replacing it after a year or two. If phones would be modularized, companies would go bankrupt because selling these modules would just not make enough money.
This idea came out a few years back, and I loved it for the customizability. unsure how I feel about google doing this, but we'll see how it plays out.
It's 2024 and every phone is just the same having something like this would be awesome rather than just wait a year to get a new phone that's just has a better performance or camera just get the camera parts
Amazing project! I look forward to seeing how well it does in the near future. The guy being interviewed looks to be exhausted. Keep up the hard work 🙌
Very inspiring stuff! This paradigm is clearly what PC's were supposed to be like, but have never been. And I find it interesting that Google has invested so heavily in robotics technologies, because in science fiction robots are often modular and easily upgraded. I'll be watching this project closely!
i was working on a similar project like this.but we can also change the ram and processor module. the body was not sleek also the finger print module was biggest challenge.the we also had to maintain the security so no one can get your rom and take advantage of all the saved files. there were lots of challenges and after 2.5 yrs on working on this we lost the funding. sad
I'm so excited about ARA. I really think that this will soon become the new standard in cell phone technology and production. Now make a laptop PC where I can do the same thing. Just like a desktop, I want to be able to go inside, fuck with, switch out, replace, upgrade hardware or the screen, or the keyboard... THAT would be awesome as funk. Anyway, Jam on!
+LAIDBACKMANNER Somehow I think I would end up using one slot for a single chip solution and using the rest for batteries Seriously phone batteries are too low in capacity these days considering how much power the devices draw My iPhone 5S has a 1500mAh battery and at idle the phone draws 200ma per hour When playing games that goes up to 900ma per hour Making a phone call uses 350ma per hour Realistically it should have a damn iPad mini battery in it
+mewantbrains how about a module that adds battery... and you are able to easily swap that out and charge the used up battery? I mean... each one of those modules can have a seperate minibattery in them to sustain thier own needs or just have one of those bigger modules primarely for batteries... just think of it

A possibility of covering the entire back would be really nice specially for people who won't be choosing to fill in all the gaps. Or maybe 'separate' useless shells can be made or 'dummy' shells to fill in those useless gaps without adding to the weight. Beautiful technology! I wish this project all the success it can get.
Grammar Nazi And you won't include yourself as an idiot? What's so bad about buying a Samsung phone? People have preferences, and no one is stupid for their decision on which phone they buy. Whether that be a Samsung, Project Ara phone or iPhone.
***** Of course I won't include myself, what am I, an idiot? They just get ripped off by Samsung. It doesn't even feel like a premium phone, especially for that price.
I would love smartphones to have some form of modularity. We treat them like gadgets that are expendable and people have no problem paying for a new phone every 2~3 years. Of course this was so old that it made sense, smartphone are already too good now to need it. like you get an olden screen at 120Hz, you get 108MP multicamera system, good battery, high storage. The only thing we need is to stop the companies from degrading our phones over time with software and bloatware and also still give the ability to change the battery. The best scenario for the future of phones is for a company to make one form factor (or like 2~3 max) and keep that design so all their screens are same and can be exchanged with opening it and replacing it, this would eliminate the need for a new phone if you screen gets damaged and trying to find the exact same type of screen to put. Also battery replacement is pure must! Also what is it with companies removing the card slot? like at this point we should have had 2x slots instead of 1, not 0! I also wouldn't mind being able to upgrade the camera or get a basic phone with the basic camera but have the ability to open 3 more slots with camera modules I want. I have a phone that has 5 cameras and 3 out of them are pure junk, a waste of space and money they could have spent in putting a better processor instead. Or if I had the choice I could have opted to get 3x 108mp cameras with different FoV and be happy for the rest of my life with it.
assassinofdestiny 1) magnets hold them together 2) you should have a case for your phone regardless 3) you say that as if bending down to pick up your phone is a lot of work
Ara is the future. And according to an article, they're supposed to have a functional prototype ready Jan/Feb '15! Can't wait to see! I'm really pulling for this project to succeed and gain traction: I know I'm down.
The future is finally at a major inventing stage. I feel like this has been a time of over saturation of the same specs or so called reinvented for that matter. I love this modular concept.
Can guarantee we still all want an need this technology to exist basically now. Please dint give up on the interchangeable phones. They are important for our future.
Cool technology, but I doubt that it will take off like the iPhone. The whole appeal of the iPhone is that you get everything in one slick, integrated package. You can do all the customization you want just by downloading software apps. I could be wrong if they start offering a whole bunch of modules for functions you can't do on an iPhone, but even if they do, Apple still has the option of coming out with a more advanced iPhone 7 or 8 or 9 that includes those functions. You can already swap out memory cards and sim cards and batteries. About the only thing you can't swap that you really need to is camera lenses.
I really love this idea. There's one thing that concerns me though. Lets say you buy a more powerful processor to replace the one you have. Wouldn't you also have to buy the ram and gpu pieces (Don't know if gpu will have its own piece.) to prevent bottlenecking in the device? For example, you can have as much ram or ghz as you want, but if you don't have fast memory transfer speeds to back it up, it's kind of useless. So wouldn't that make you have to fork over more money to buy more pieces? Then again, it does depend on what you upgrade specifically. Maybe i'm drunk. Idk. This just came to my mind is all. Still love the idea though.
keep in mind the pieces only come off because the magnet is in the off state. they'd have something on the software side to turn the magnet on and off changing between 3 newtons (easy to pull off but doesn't fall) and 30 newtons. which you couldn't pull off if you tried.
it's a good idea tbh like to have a phone like this that has different parts etc like you can add 2 cameras for wider pictures add more batteries to make it last longer add speakers and other features like they could sell the parts in shops etc and have people just customise the device to your own liking and if you can replace the screen than that's awesome
I know I wouldn't mind a slightly heavier, chunkier phone. It gives it mass, makes it feel more like you have something in your hand, and not just a little piece of plastic. Great idea, I want to see it when they finish it.
This would have been so much cooler than a folding phone screen.

I agree that way the components don't need individual casing and it looks normal
I was thinking exactly the same!
Then the device will look like any other phone.
Davin Turner thats kinda the point yet giving us a huge potential of future growth. Most people or reviews don't like the look this might solve that problem.
Seems like the modules come off way too easy, especially considering you wouldn't change modules very often at all.
It has a toggling magnet on it that keeps them in place from what I understand. So I think you can just lock the modules into place and unlock them after.
I completely agree, on the original phonebloks advertisement on kickstarter, they had screws, it appeared a lot more secure then these sliding parts.
alex d Yeah not like it's hard to unscrew a few screws. Doesn't look as cool though :P
They are held toghter by strong magnets. Also they will let you design your own back cover that goes on top of the back of the phone.
They should make so when the phone is on, the magnets are active and hold them and when the phone is off, the magnets inactive and you can take them out.
This project has piqued my interest for a wee while now. I have my doubts that big manufacturers will run with this...but it would be amazing if they did.
I'm waiting for the release for now about nearly a year.
Drak aël same here
I have been waiting since the day Phonebloks video was out
😂😂😂
I remember hearing about this project a few years back. Excited to see that this concept is really in motion.
still looking for the reboot in the future, this just so ahead of it's time
This is the future. Sorry Apple.
Apple will copy this, dont you worry.
This NOT the future, Apple don't copy this crap..this reminds me of the pencil from the 90's if u miss one piece of the pencil you be screw
muhammed shayan Its not like the pieces will fall off every time you pick them up, magnets can be very powerful, and the magnets will have to be switched off when you replace parts.
Lucas Zhou that's called "ripping off"
pls, apple users never cared about things being modular the new imac doesn't even have replaceable RAM.
2020 Remembering This 😢
*Definitely buying it*
All I can think about is how I would be compulsively sliding the modules I don't need on and off the phone as I use it. O.o
+Aaron Z yep Haha
I've broken so many cases doing that 😅
The left guy's head dance at 0:08 LOL
swiggity swooty
Erick Cordova
HAHA!
No headphone jack?
Edit: saw the new video they let out; it has a headphone jack now.
+AVM3798 I saw the new video they let out; it has a headphone jack.
It's cancelled
I would try it out, but I suggest them making cases or something that will secure the chips together without any falling off problems or any concerns to the user of the phone.
Oh my god yes that's what's needed
Yes. At least a better locking mechanism (as cool as the magnets are). Imagine using the phone and you accidentally slide the battery out, or drop the phone.
Woo im smart now
Sub Ripper I do believe the lock function makes it impossible for you to take it out, unless you force it really hard but at that point you will break the frame anyway
No brainer. eBay will be full of cases week 1 after the release just like any other phone release!
Good bless.
Need this now more than ever mobile gaming is growing so fast
So true
If they ever come back to this, imagine what they could do with current tech.
Nah, stupid techtubers would just criticize it to oblivion and just say, I won't recommend this to anyone, it's cool, but no.
They'll also just glorify folding phones even more while using this a bad example.
@@sahilmeena8018 Aside from the risk of losing modules I really don't see any problems with this.
R.I.P. This amazing idea
this is actually pretty cool. its like a phone you can custom like a pc. I would def hope theres a part that is an upgraded soundcard so i can have super hq audio on the go
Yeah, a more powerful headphone amp would be sweet.
I remember looking forward to this and forgotten what happened to it
project ahead of time
Okay google, bring this back
It would be amazing if Google revived this as a pixel device. They could brag about reducing e-waste too.
Wish it is started again
It's been 9 years 😢
I can already see a Con is that people will be snapping modules in and out all the time when they feel bored 😭EZ fixed with a case
"Innovation under time pressure is higher quality innovation"... and excellent remark!
I am definitely interested in buying a phone like this.
Amazing project! I look forward to seeing how well it does in the near future. The guy being interviewed looks to be exhausted. Keep up the hard work 🙌
WHY DIDNT WE GET THIS BRING IT back
Eagerly waiting for these kinda phone
I have been waiting this for 4 years.
And now, I'm still waiting.
It was sadly cancelled
Very inspiring stuff! This paradigm is clearly what PC's were supposed to be like, but have never been. And I find it interesting that Google has invested so heavily in robotics technologies, because in science fiction robots are often modular and easily upgraded. I'll be watching this project closely!
They probably stopped them from doing this because it will destroy the economy of all the other brands like Apple and samsung……
i was working on a similar project like this.but we can also change the ram and processor module. the body was not sleek also the finger print module was biggest challenge.the we also had to maintain the security so no one can get your rom and take advantage of all the saved files.
there were lots of challenges and after 2.5 yrs on working on this we lost the funding. sad
Definitely want to see this project become real in the consumer market.
For sure!
It won't for a long time
I'm so excited about ARA.
LAIDBACKMANNER I think Razer had a project which had the parts of a PC in small boxes and you just push them into the case and it works.
+LAIDBACKMANNER Somehow I think I would end up using one slot for a single chip solution and using the rest for batteries
Seriously phone batteries are too low in capacity these days considering how much power the devices draw
My iPhone 5S has a 1500mAh battery and at idle the phone draws 200ma per hour
When playing games that goes up to 900ma per hour
Making a phone call uses 350ma per hour
Realistically it should have a damn iPad mini battery in it
+mewantbrains how about a module that adds battery... and you are able to easily swap that out and charge the used up battery? I mean... each one of those modules can have a seperate minibattery in them to sustain thier own needs or just have one of those bigger modules primarely for batteries... just think of it
There are limitations to the size of the modules so I think multiple small batteries would be more easily manageable
But the million dollar question is: Will it transform into robot as well?
+joseph971 Yes, you just need to buy thte right parts.
+darkfight light exodia
Roberto Rosas Jr.
it's not that powerfull mate.
darkfight light I know but your comment reminded me of it haha
but can it shoot Bowser's?
I love this idea.. it's completely out of this world. as a matter of fact, I would absolutely love to have such a phone. all the best Google!!!
18 months later and still no Project Ara release :( I seriously want to see this become a thing.
6 years later and still not here
i don't know if anyone noticed but the mainboard of project ara is STATIC , its very minimal the changes u can make in the setup of this phone
Dave Hakkens Phone Bloks concept also shows taht u can change the setup of your phone in any way. on the other hand , this is a good step towards THAT concept. im not sure if i want this version already, ill have to think about it
edit: typo
"2024, huh? Any updates on where this project stands?"
It was canceled years ago.
@@saadjameel1820 I think it's actually kinda cool
@@JannesDragon It's cool and useful. But sadly it was cancelled.
I hope this takes off. I would buy it to replace my htc phone
I don't think that this can replace it. ;)
Grammar Nazi Why not?
*****
Because people are buying Samsung smartphones, so much idiots on this planet. :
Grammar Nazi And you won't include yourself as an idiot? What's so bad about buying a Samsung phone? People have preferences, and no one is stupid for their decision on which phone they buy. Whether that be a Samsung, Project Ara phone or iPhone.
*****
Of course I won't include myself, what am I, an idiot? They just get ripped off by Samsung. It doesn't even feel like a premium phone, especially for that price.
Watching these @2020, still cannot find smart stuff like these
I need this phone. Modular is the way to go.
This is what you call innovation Apple, take note.
This is what you call a huge fail hahaha
Are you sure Daniel? *cough cough* Motorola *cough"
Like Motorola is successful.. oh wait
You call constant delays and then cancellation innovation?!
This might not be *that* useful but I would really support them because their concept is probably the coolest out of many I have seen.
Great now when i drop my phone on top of picking it up i have to put it back together too.
No the parts kinda lock in place and wont slip out
assassinofdestiny 1) magnets hold them together 2) you should have a case for your phone regardless 3) you say that as if bending down to pick up your phone is a lot of work
+assassinofdestiny Google killed it like everything else
Not anymore LOL Ars failed.
Thanks to Google
correct me if I'm wrong but before it was called ara wasn't it phoneblocks ? and Google bought the plans or something ?
Finally, a phone for every man
When this comes out we won't have to upgrade to a new phone every year and simply just swap out parts
the only thing I see wrong is that every one will have the same phone and the smartphone market might lose creativity
+alexander thomas s
Ara is the future. And according to an article, they're supposed to have a functional prototype ready Jan/Feb '15! Can't wait to see! I'm really pulling for this project to succeed and gain traction: I know I'm down.
I am holding on my my note 2 until this bad boy is open to the public or I get a demo version.
I'm gonna make my own next week. I'll give you one :-)
Zack Jenkins thanks 😉
***** hes probably lieing
craftxbox never!!!
how do you know
Bad that they stopped this project. I rather have one of this than having an iPhone.
Really wonderful smartphone 🙂 they not used more skills
They couldn't implement it unfortunately, it was a great idea
The future is finally at a major inventing stage. I feel like this has been a time of over saturation of the same specs or so called reinvented for that matter. I love this modular concept.
Still hoping someday it will come around 😔
Yea it was actually revolutionary
You can upgrade and make ur own cosmetics like a skull
What a cool idea, there is so much potential in this. With those shells, visually and performance vise, you can make phone the way you want it.
_Ara~ Ara~_
Can guarantee we still all want an need this technology to exist basically now. Please dint give up on the interchangeable phones. They are important for our future.
2018 still not here 😢
It was cancelled like a year ago.
To me, ara seems like material design hardware, the concept really is beautiful.
You are an idiot no offence
You really are stupid. A) android owns the market not ios. B) IOS offers no customization. C) this will take off, it will surpass any previous phone.
Not sure if trolling or just incredible stupid
Apple fan much? .. and there is litterally no customization in iPhones compared to the android OS.
Typical isheep
Still love the idea though.
it's been more than 1 year.. come on bro
I actually like the aesthetic elegance of Ara. Would look great in all black or gold or white
You guys should work on better batteries, like ones that would last for days. plz
There are plenty of people working on that.
How about using standard batteries, like AAA?
How about changing to a newer silicon supercapacitor could charge in seconds and last for a week!!!
Graphene carbon nano-tube supercapacitor
James Grieshaber i know but no ones making them
keep in mind the pieces only come off because the magnet is in the off state. they'd have something on the software side to turn the magnet on and off changing between 3 newtons (easy to pull off but doesn't fall) and 30 newtons. which you couldn't pull off if you tried.
if I dropped the phone I think phone parts will fly every ware LoL
+Kizmaro me to
+TheGamingCave at least you can replace the screen when it cracks really easely and maby even get an upgrade :/.
i'm waiting of this phone.
+Luc van Driel yeah😊
it use magnets to lock parts
+Kizmαro ε: I think they would likely include the basic ones i.e camera, speaker, battery ect
Oh my god this is so cool. I cant stop looking this project ara stuff.
Идёшь... Идёшь... и вдруг WiFi отвалился :D
it's a good idea tbh like to have a phone like this that has different parts etc like you can add 2 cameras for wider pictures add more batteries to make it last longer add speakers and other features like they could sell the parts in shops etc and have people just customise the device to your own liking and if you can replace the screen than that's awesome
Thermal camera?
Kinda like Phonebloks.
It is, the maker of phone looks met up with Motorola and they were interested, and they were already working on a modular device
"Meeting up with many companies to complete the project." They weren't kidding.
I know I wouldn't mind a slightly heavier, chunkier phone. It gives it mass, makes it feel more like you have something in your hand, and not just a little piece of plastic. Great idea, I want to see it when they finish it.
