I can't believe you guys successfully made one. Now I'm thinking about switching my iPhone to this! I can't wait and I hope the best of luck to you guys!
I'm still using my lovely old mobile phone and patiently waiting for this Phoneblok beauty. I live in Denmark so i really hope it will come here too! Such great work!
I wanted to change to Android for a while now, but I'm sticking with Windows Phone until this project gets big. Once its released and functional I will have no doubt in my mind. This is just amazing. Keep it going.
Now that we know for sure that this works, it would be really awesome if other companies got in on this. This would be a perfect device to run Windows 8 on. And who among us wouldn't love to see Apple make a modular iPhone
Seriously I cannot wait for this to be released, the potential is there for something awesome. If I had to make a prediction within the next 5-10 years we'll see fewer and fewer "Flagship" models and more bundled assemblies of Ara from different manufacturers. Now if we can get confirmation of all carriers having identity modules for the Android OS to be stock with no skin or bloatware I might die of excitement.
Featuring hot tracks from the new album, "Background Music to Fit Any Documentary, Vol. 1." But really, this looks like a really awesome project. With the quality of screens in phones these days, being able to swap out just the CPU and/or RAM and keep everything else has to be more efficient and less wasteful than a full phone upgrade every year or two.
2021 i wish this was still around and developing and because its not im going to make a stand and develop something similar to this concept with the same goal
This is an awesome project and I hope it goes well. I did notice however the edited video, so it doesn't show the system hiccuping when you do something. I'm sure you guys will figure the OSes performance.
The one issue I see with this prototype is the spaces only allow for certain configurations so hopefully it becomes more like the phonebloks concept that allowed for any configuration down the road.
So at last. It's gonna just become like computer system. Just like we change things in computer. really waiting for it. Just a awesome idea seeing turing out real. #PHONEBLOCK RULEZ
mind=blown. I can't believe this actually works...it's not because it's incredible technology..it's not, actually...but because, like most amazing ideas, they get crushed by big companies.. can't wait to see the production model!
Would be awesome if Project ARA makes these phones with the option of having a physical QWERTY keyboard. Please read this post. I'm really looking for the next best smart phone with a physical QWERTY keyboard that is similar to the "Samsung Galaxy S Relay," but none are coming out. Please and thank you!
Spiral/phoneblok/Ara whatever this modular phone is labeled can ONLY get better with better technology. At some point it will be perfected (hopefully nano technology will get more developed to build better modular cellular device). THIS is the the FUTURE.
I'm all for it. I just hope they can make it look more uniform if desired. I also look forward to very specific modular theft. Leave your phone on a desk too long and someone steals just your battery and camera.
The Wrath of Kahn From the looks of the MDK (module development kit) there will be a variant in all three endo sizes that will support dual speakers on the front on the device.
Fascinating view into device hardware development and the future! I wonder whether ProjectAra will be techie only or simply how all gadgets will be in the future? (reminds me of the late 90's view of personal area networks with 1'st wave wearable computing! Funny how some ideas cycle, trying to take off.)
In the Spyro 1 prototype 50% of the space on the module is taken up for modularity and so there's not as much space for the developers' function, but in Spiro 2 Toshiba made custom chips for us, and in Spiro 2 most of the area should be available... Most of the area = 51%? :) So far the idea is nice, but we don't know much about the execution - we see the system is lagging and that's what everyone expected. Let's say you have a huge garage for cars? Do you expect to fit more cars in there if you put a bunch of walls inside it? The problem is not only the volume of the walls, but also the fact of the limit on the volume for individual components. Let's say a developer X can create an optimal (quality/size) CPU taking 1 cm^3, and camera taking 1.5 cm^3. The slot sizes are 1.1 cm^3 and 2.2 cm^3. So now they're forced to redesign their camera to be slightly better but significantly bigger, or slightly smaller but significantly smaller and increase the CPU size even though it's good enough already. And it's only volume, while in real life example a dev needs to deal with at least 2 dimensions. Third dimension can increased from standard, by sacrificing flat back. We will see many modules with empty, wasted space inside them. We will also wait many, many years until developers prepare hardware for specific dimensions of ARA. I see some advantages of ARA over normal phones, but people don't even build their own laptops, and you think building a phone is a good idea? The only successful DIY computers I know of are desktops, because You don't care about ~ 50% (or even about 80-90%) wasted space.
I think it would be cool if there is a slot below the screen, where we could put either, navigation buttons or speakers, or maybe another storage module, or whatever. Just an idea
I hope the manufactures for the modules come up with cool designs that match with all the other modules and parts of the phone like on 0:53, I can't wait till January.
What you see at 0:53 is actually part of the design process... each module is set up to accept what they are calling "shells" meaning you can change the look of your modules individually using your own 3d printer, or any number of online design sites that will print it for you that I'm certain will show up once this gains traction in the market. I'm like you, can't wait until January :-D
Jose Turruellas You and I both, I've been loosely keeping up with it since I first heard about it earlier this year and I for one can't wait to see where this takes the world... this definitely has the possibility to seriously change how the mobile device market operates, if not how we think about the computing platform as a whole.... It's an amazing age we live in :) Can't wait for the future lol
This looks cool. All I want is a phone that has a battery that lasts longer than 6 hours (occasional use) XD I would love a pretty large phone battery that can last at least for 3 days
its sad that project ara just silently died
We went to NK Labs in Boston to see the progress of the Ara prototype. Here is an update video to show you how it looks. Enjoy!

Woah That's really cool!
Finally turning into reality!
Are the bloks gonna be manufactured in china because i dont have a lot of $ and A gps module would be great for navigation apps
I just smiled when I saw the little android logo in the boot screen. Can't wait to get this phone !
7 years later...
Hey, Apple! See - this is innovation!
Uladzimir Shtukar this comment didn’t age well
Congrats on this marvelous prototype. Can't wait for the next one in January!
2021 and its just sad that this project died...
Oh Savenor's! :')
How well I remember you.
You're a Butcher shop next to a vet clinic.
Good old memories.
Summer 2014!
Such a shame that this Projekt hasnt been realized. I will never forgive and wont buy any new Smartphone until this modular Design will become true...
I think this is the only time that I've ever been excited for a channel update from a RUclipsr
I can't believe you guys successfully made one. Now I'm thinking about switching my iPhone to this! I can't wait and I hope the best of luck to you guys!
yup not happening anymore
We are all following this project guys, a fantastic idea, all the best and good luck :)
I'm still using my lovely old mobile phone and patiently waiting for this Phoneblok beauty. I live in Denmark so i really hope it will come here too! Such great work!
Yes yes yes! Keep up the hard work! You are literally making history!
I wanted to change to Android for a while now, but I'm sticking with Windows Phone until this project gets big. Once its released and functional I will have no doubt in my mind. This is just amazing. Keep it going.
This is so exciting! Nothing can beat the feeling of a prototype phone booting successfully. Can't wait until it is available for the masses!
You're making really fast progress! Thumbs up!
Amazing idea!!! Congras Team. Keep moving foward
I love the "smoke test" it is true. I love electronic engineering. Thank you guys to share this.
This looks fantastic, I'm excited for the future of this technology. :)
Very, very nice and smart. Greetings from Bulgaria!
hello,
you did a really good job with the phone and I'm looking forward to it very much, keep it up.
Love greetings from Vienna
Tom
Awesome. Awesome. Awesome. Keep up the good work! Can't wait to see more.
Now that we know for sure that this works, it would be really awesome if other companies got in on this. This would be a perfect device to run Windows 8 on. And who among us wouldn't love to see Apple make a modular iPhone

This is awesome! I am really looking forward to this!!
Neat. Waiting to see the next version of the prototype.
Great job :)
Keep working like that, we are all waiting for this device ;)
Cheers for France.
Congrats for opening a new era!
Mark your calendars for January 14th and 21st to see the prototype 2 of project Ara! For now, how about version 1?
🆒‼ 🎃🎉👻
This is exciting. I'm really looking forward to this, thanks for sharing
Remind me bro. +gabetinge

But really, this looks like a really awesome project. With the quality of screens in phones these days, being able to swap out just the CPU and/or RAM and keep everything else has to be more efficient and less wasteful than a full phone upgrade every year or two.
well done from phoneblock planning for this and now there is a prototype
It's actually working ! Great work :D
Thats awesome, can't wait till this out!
Awesome! Dreaming of modular tablet and the possibilities.
I've been following very closely, and I'm waiting patiently for it. .
Thank you for make it real, make it possible the dream of a lot of developers around the world... "Customize your phone...? Never was too easy...!"
2021 i wish this was still around and developing
and because its not im going to make a stand and develop something similar to this concept with the same goal
2024 and still weeping over this lost concept
Wooo been with yo guys since day 1!! :)
Wow, just can't wait to have it on the market!
Owesome!! I hope to see it!! :) I can't wait Ara!
Jelly Bean looks so damned old, now. I'm sold on the Ara concept. I will be getting one of these as soon as they are available.
Wow, this is actually making me excited :)
That's bad ass guys, I wish them great success with this..
Can't wait for this, gonna get all of the best "bloks" for mine
I am super excited for this.
This is an awesome project and I hope it goes well. I did notice however the edited video, so it doesn't show the system hiccuping when you do something. I'm sure you guys will figure the OSes performance.
This will be something to look forward to
Very impressive!
Keep up good work guys!
The first prototype of Google’s Ara modular smartphone project in action #ProjectAra #Google #Smartphone
That's a great advancement , I am sure it will be released by next year !
I geeked out so bad when it powered on, lol.
The one issue I see with this prototype is the spaces only allow for certain configurations so hopefully it becomes more like the phonebloks concept that allowed for any configuration down the road.
I agree with you. The Phonebloks concept has more customizability.
Aaron Gosselin Hopefully this is just a "lets make these blocks actually work and then worry about optimizing customizability. "
Metazoxan Dexall hopefully when they release it the corners wont be so sharp :P
The future of cellphones and mobiles its coming to life thanks to these guys and google.
I really hope this succeeds beyond my own wildest dreams. AND, I want one already.
That's amazing!!!
So can't wait!!! This complements Android perfectly
That looks like it's gonna be pretty awesome!
ohh snap, say your prayers apple!lol. I'm really happy that they already built a working stable prototype!
really excited about this!gives me chills! hope I could get one as soon as possible!^_^
It sounded and looked a lot better in the first video.
welll...i still waiting for it....
Nice to see a local Boston firm working on such a compelling but of tech. Looks awesome so far!!!
It's still freakin' SWEET!
So at last. It's gonna just become like computer system. Just like we change things in computer. really waiting for it. Just a awesome idea seeing turing out real.
#PHONEBLOCK RULEZ
Arghhh I want one now 😔 can't wait when it gets released 😁
Mind blown. Finally!
Todo en una sola palabra: PERFECTO!!
which is the music of the minute 1:58?
I love this project!
mind=blown.
I can't believe this actually works...it's not because it's incredible technology..it's not, actually...but because, like most amazing ideas, they get crushed by big companies..
can't wait to see the production model!
A new age of mobile begins :D.
Very excited.
Awesome progress #PhoneBloks #ProjectARA
Can't wait to get one once it's finished. Fuck obsolescence!
Great news!
By the way, what is the OUTRO SONG?
yay im am so happy there is now a working prototype
we support you guys !!
It would look better if the speakers were above the display instead of underneath it. It is amazing to see a modular phone working though.

I'm all for it. I just hope they can make it look more uniform if desired.

Most impressive. I just want dual forward speaker slots, or no deal.
The Wrath of Kahn From the looks of the MDK (module development kit) there will be a variant in all three endo sizes that will support dual speakers on the front on the device.
modular theft sound arkward..... just yelling "who stole my camera block?" into a room full of people.
if someone has time / opportunity to steal modules then they could just take the entire phone / device. >.
nicolas nour
because its funnier?
Can't wait to get my hands on this!
Yay phoneblocks is the best idea since electricity cant wait till they're consumer products!
Fascinating view into device hardware development and the future! I wonder whether ProjectAra will be techie only or simply how all gadgets will be in the future? (reminds me of the late 90's view of personal area networks with 1'st wave wearable computing! Funny how some ideas cycle, trying to take off.)
Hmm, guys that should have been Phonebloks -- sorry all.
You should do an update of what happen to the project. It would be interesting to see
this concept must succeed ! instant buy

Edward Russell II wow, I didn't know that, haha thanks for the reply, seriously hyped for this phone.

I figured it out. The song near the end is called Boys Like The Girls by CrazyTunes
Wanted to know the specs of the modules that were used on this video :D im so excited if this goes international.
Wow!..i really want to see the next video!
I am more excited of this than my own birthday.
This looks cool. All I want is a phone that has a battery that lasts longer than 6 hours (occasional use) XD I would love a pretty large phone battery that can last at least for 3 days
pretty good work but maybe can arrange the place of that pieces thing on the top of the phone?just personal suggestion
Should make a phone that doesn't get hot after a few mins of gaming and videos. But this is awesome.
Anybody know who the music/song is by? Sounds like some sort of remix to Girls Chase Boys.
This is really cool :D
If Amd tags along on the cpu and GPU i will buy this right away
