    There is lots of good info on the internet relating to the atlatl but Ryan Gill is by far the best source.

    This was a great video! Always been interested in ranged weapons, but didn't discover this one until I read it in a book. The description it gave was adequate, but still left me wondering. Your video was a huge help! Thanks a ton!

    excellent explanations. found myself nodding alot, your understanding body mechanics and the tool in hand made me not want to skip to the shot but keep listening.

    It's fascinating how you have had to rediscover all sorts of obscure details of use. This stuff used to be known many thousands of years ago, has been lost, and is now rediscovered.
    nice

    I really enjoyed this video. I was only looking to see one in action but am glad I clicked this one. Your really like your way of instructing, you'd be a great teacher....That's really all I wanted to say. I've seen a million instructionals on RUclips and I am very impressed with how thorough you are. It left me with minimal questions and just when I'd start to get confused or wonder "how?" you would demonstrate the step and got me right back on track.

      thank you much, I appreciate that. There are definitely going to be some variances between people and sets, but this is the style that works best for me. I tend to find myself even holding a little above my ear these days. It is ever evolving it seems.

    great video, getting my first atlatl and was wondering what the biggest game the atlatls on your site could effectively take.Been looking on other sites but they are way too expensive for their hunting atlatl. Im looking to go black bear hunting but will start with white tail until i master the throw.

    • @huntprimitive9918
      @huntprimitive9918  8 лет назад

      +Damien Mantia I think mega-fauna atlatls were much beefier (I am working on that too ;-) ) but the ones on my site are definitely in the big game hunting range as far as deer, pigs, etc. You want the heavier sets with the longer throwers.. more energy. I am going to hopefuly be working on getting a pig atlatl kill this summer if I can a good throw in range, however the throwing style for that is going to be a bit diffferent (without a step). I lan on doing a video of that soon too.

    Coming from a background as a slinger, what would you recommend as the general "sweet spot" range to start exploring preferences with the atlatl? (mostly thrower length, but dart length would be cool too)
    For example in slinging circles, mid-length "jack-of-all-trades" length slings tend to be to be arm-length (for a 6'-er like me that's 30 inches), but us slingers also don't use darts of any length, so I have no basis for how that aspect changes things haha

  • @MustObeyTheRules
    @MustObeyTheRules 10 лет назад +6

    I'm wondering does the length of your atlatl make a difference? To me it seems like a longer atlatl would give more speed and power thanks to more leverage what do you think ?

    • @huntprimitive9918
      @huntprimitive9918  10 лет назад +4

      It definitely matters, and that is what my next video is going to be about. The length of the dart and thrower are both important for what you are trying to accomplish.. more power can be had from a longer thrower, and even more so with a banner weight. A longer thrower typically requires a longer dart as well, because the point of balance can make the dart very hard to control. The simple answer seems like it would be to just give everyone a long thrower and long dart, but It takes a lot of throwing power to make a 7ft dart and long thrower work properly. Often times, beginners or people not interested in hunting with it are better served with a 6ft dart and medium length thrower without a banner weight, like the one I used in the video. You can "learn" to throw about any size dart or thrower, but there are certainly sizes that can make it inherently easier/more fun to throw.

    when cortez battled the aztecs , it was described, as darts, the length was less than a man tallness, I suspect that greater the length there is a variation or increase for less

    Ok dude. Just getting started on this and obviously I'm trying to hard. What is your opinion of the carbon Express Atlatl kit? Just curious, it seems solid but needs about 500gr added up front.

    • @huntprimitive9918
      @huntprimitive9918  5 лет назад

      honestly I think a carbon atlatl is terribly out of context. I personally hate the idea but that is just me. To me, an ancient weapon shouldn't be made of modern materials. Also, it's not built by people that atlatl hunt or likely even seriously throw. it's meant to be easily built to sell, not correct in application. I sell the real deal on my website www.huntprimitive.com . My starter set is probably pretty comparably priced, while my archaic hunter set is definitely meant for the big game hunt.

I will visit your cite to see what you offer and maybe purchase something. GOG BLESS and best wishes from N. E. Texas.

    It's not that hard to isolate a voice from a sound track in most video or sound editing softwares. Just look up whatever software you use plus the phrase voice isolation and you'll get an example. Usually you can even find a youtube video.
    I mention this because I enjoyed your video and you said you'd wanted it clearer. Thanks for the info haha

    Do you use a specific spine on the darts, like on an arrow or du you just make sure to have the same spine, without choosing a specific spine?

    • @huntprimitive9918
      @huntprimitive9918  6 лет назад

      it doesn't vary that much, but there are slight differences. You can use a scale to measure deflection, but for the most part you can group them by average diameter

      I am not sure. If you find an event like Silver River Knap-in in Florida that has atlatl throwing as an event, you can try it out there and get some instruction. I would actually be interested in doing an atlatl building and instructional class but I am not sure the following would be there.

    Jos on lyhyt ja jäykkä nuoli, on suunnattava ylös, muuten heittovarsi kääntää nuolen poikittain ja lento jää lyhyeksi. Pitkällä ja joustavalla ei ole niin tarkkaa,

    If you are throwing the atlatl you are doing it wrong. The atlatl is used to throw a dart.
