  • No one wants it to happen, but we all have to be prepared for it... a flat tire on our camper!!! Much like changing a tire on a car, you should be prepared to change a tire on your trailer. With a recent flat we had to deal with, here are some tips that we discovered while replacing our tire, along with the tools we discovered we need!
    Tools: (Shopping our Amazon links helps us!)
    Floor Jack: amzn.to/3peG9xU
    Bottle Jack: amzn.to/36pI2PF
    Socket/wrench kit: amzn.to/3nd7b78
    Square bit kit: amzn.to/3eP7bqT
    Tire Iron: amzn.to/3llcXD4
    Torque wrench: amzn.to/2Iv9OBS

    Something else is to stabilize trailer from rolling by chocking opposite side from flat. Also keep trailer connected to tow vehicle and set its emergency brake. All this before jacking and loosening lugs. Jack stand use once trailer is jacked up, too. Thanks for this vid.

    Might just be incorrect usage of the word, but torque wrench is NOT proper tool to remove lug nuts. A torque wrench should be used to get proper torque when reinstalling, but they can be damaged when applying torque for removal, they are really designed as a one way measurement tool. Much better is to use a long handled tire iron of your preferred choice. Agree on checking out pre need and agree on a good floor jack, I know they take up valuable space, but a flat on a Tab will almost necessitate that type of jack, low profile with a high lift.

    All good advice! I bought a jack for the T@G. Tried it out and realized it was too short to to the job, Now we have travel w a short 4x4 cedar post under the mattress board. Now I'm headed out to double check our lug nuts. I think I did that before but time has elapsed since then.

    The old tire has uneven ware, on the inside. This is an indication of a bent axle, you might want to check that.

    Great video and very useful. Instead of using a torque wrench you should use a breaker bar or you will mess up the calibration on the torque wrench. Also, you can buy a set of lug nut sockets with the 6 most common sizes which is really handy. Finally, use anti-seize compound between the rim and the rotor so that the wheel doesn’t get rusted to the rotor (that is when it’s really difficult to remove the flat tire).

    A year ago NuCamp had a video how to change a tire on the TAG. They used the tongue jack and stabilizer to raise the wheel off the ground. The 400 is a lot larger so your method appears like the way to go. I was wonder if the tongue method would work on a Boondock 320? Amazing how you traveled from tip to tip of North America without a flat.

    • @mikemead2315
      @mikemead2315 3 года назад

      Agreed. I have seen that done with a teardrop. Very slick indead. In this case, both the rear stabilizers-together with attachment point, and tongue jack with attachment point need to be rated for over 1/2 the total weight. Would be great if it was - it would show someone was thinking.

    • @MandyLea
      @MandyLea  3 года назад +2

      Yes we were quite lucky not to get a flat on that trip. I would not recommend using the stabilizers as jacks on the 320's or 400s...

    Excellent tips Mandy! We have a T@G xl boondock and instead of buying a special jack, we carry a normal scissor jack and 4 x 4 blocks to raise the camper high enough to change the tire. Thanks for the reminders about having the proper tools! We just double checked our tow vehicle list =) Enjoy the nice weather wherever you are! My tow vehicle (TV) is a Toyota Tacoma with a bottle jack. It may not extend far enough from the ground, but most of use travel with pads to put under the stabilizers. I'm going to take a crack at that. since two or three of those should give me plenty of height. I'll let you know how it turns out. Also, I already checked and the Tacoma lug range is a size too big, so you need to have on for the T@b. The best advice from this video is get comfortable doing this before you leave home.

  • @stevebrannon69
    @stevebrannon69 3 года назад +1

    Mandy/Kendrick you may want to check out your vehicle’s jack. It may be able to lift the trailer also, thereby saving weight and the cost of purchase. Another comment, is to not use locking lug nuts, if you damage the head of these it is almost impossible to get the lug nut off especially if it is inset on the rim, which a lot of these custom rims are made. The old style steel rims allow you to get a grip on these lug nuts, or as I had to do, hit the lug nut with a hammer until I broke the stud.

    I did “practice” changing a tire when we got our 400, and quickly realized our bottle jack did not raise high enough to get the tire off the ground. So, I purchased another bottle jack with a greater reach that has an integrated jack stand, but it was too tall to fit under the lift point! So, I have to carry both jacks with me to raise the tire off the ground, using the original one to raise the frame high enough to get the taller jack underneath.

    One comment, since its surprising the number of people who don't know this, you tighten the bolts by going across to the opposite side bolt. If you go in order clockwise or counterclockwise you'll introduce wobble into the wheel.

    Three questions. 1) did you need to bring your stabilizers up before changing the tire? 2) did you put the trailer on a level surface before changing the tire? 3) Did you chock the other tire to keep the trailer from moving?

    • @MandyLea
      @MandyLea  3 года назад

      1) Yes I would bring the stabilizers up so that the ones on the opposite side don't get too much pressure on them. 2) Luckily it went flat on a level surface! 3) Yes!

    Hi Mandy and Kendrick. I am curious about where you got your spare tire mount bracket. Looks like it is custom made to ‘wrap’ the outside of the steel box. I had assumed that you simply attached the tire carrier to the jack mount but this video clarified that you actually drilled into the box. Would like to know where you got it! All my best!

    I've got the right lug nut sockets (which, for my T@B are different sizes for the tire and spare!!!), but never considered carrying my own jack. Also- I presume if the jack isn't tall enough, you can use the Lego blocks which everyone has for their stabilizers. But- I thought that I read that for changing a tire, you can use the stabilizers (and hitch lift) to lift the T@B (320 in my case) off the ground. ??

    • @MandyLea

  • @metaxaanabeer
    @metaxaanabeer 3 года назад

    I'm late to all this but just recycle both your tow vehicle jack, any bottle jacks you might carry and go to eBay and buy yourself a Hummer jack. Not terrible expensive and will lift anything, anywhere, any height. Might seem a bit large but we run a 5x8 teardrop behind a medium sized SUV and manage to find a spot for it. If you do it and have to use it you will wonder why every RV dealer isn't advising this mod.
