The presentation is structured around three main questions. First, what distinguishes substantiality from immediacy and subjectivity in the most general terms? Next, what is the significance of substance in the internal economy of the Doctrine of Essence? Finally, how does Hegel situate himself in relation to his predecessors? According to my interpretation, substance, for Hegel, is a type of reality that is certainly consistent, but also blind and such that it does violence to otherness. The analysis of substance shows how Hegel both takes Spinoza seriously and regards him as his adversary.

The international philosophical conference Between Substance & Subject. The Presence of Spinoza in Hegel (26-28 October 2023, AGRFT, Ljubljana) was organized by the University of Padua and the University of Ljubljana - Faculty of Arts & Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television. The conference was carried out as part of the project Hegel's Political Metaphysics (J6-2590), which is financed by the Slovenian Research Agency and will continue within the framework of the Hegel Congress 2024.
