I think it has to do with weight. Men are heavier so the tires bite more, giving more grip. Women are lighter so they glide more over the top of the snow, giving less control. Further, like a car on snow, you only have control as long as the wheels are turning. The second you lock the wheel, you start to skid. So weight + speed = more grip.
I have a hunch the men went first and tore up the snow pretty bad, making those areas tougher for the women. EDIT: Then again, the more I watch, maybe not?
And a ton of them were eating it too. But I suspect that going faster is actually advantageous in the straighter section as the mass and momentum reduces some of the affect of ruts and slushiness. Guys that are hauling generally seem more stable that the ones who are being more cautious and going slower.
💙🇺🇲 Wow, I was feeling this ride all the way with you... every shake, rattle, and roll, including all the suspense building up more and more each time you were headed for those ridiculously sharp hair-pin curves. You looked as if you would be taking a plunge over the side of the trail into the abyss! 😱 Of course, that spill you took up on top of the mountain through "wipeout alley" (as i call it) was so scary and i was sorry to hear you say, that you had left a little piece of your self up their. But, you gained a new warrior scar😏 and a new sub 😊. For your first run on the mountain i thought it was bang'n! Hope to see more vids from you in 2023. 😁
Great run. That angle gives a lot more information about how hard the route is. The whole video sat in suspense, it was especially scary when you were close to the other riders during the downhill.
Fantastic Jen well done! I broke my gopro on the ice section so it’s lovely to see your footage of race…. What an experience! My sentiments exactly in the Allemonde stretch 😅 ….happy biking, Lynda
1h and 06 minutes for your first ever megavalanche, that's pretty good! You were lucky to not break anything. I had a flat tire at my first attempt, and I broke my derailleur the year after that!
Ah that's unfortunate, hopefully this year will be 3rd time lucky if you're going🤞. I did get lucky though, went to the medic tent at the finish and discovered a small chunk of flesh missing from my forearm which required stitches. I got that beauty from the crash at the top (@1:26 in). You'll see the blood on the frame when I fell on the ski slope. I had no idea it was that bad, though it was a bad graze making my ride a little uncomfortable 😂🤦♀️. Glad I had my elbow guards on cause it might have been a broken arm in the end🤷♀️
@@jenwark5622 I've already done my 3rd time in 2019. Last time I didn't break anything (not even the 1h barrier! - 01h 04min 30s ! So close and yet so far!) You can look at my take of that race on a friend's video : ruclips.net/video/4vSF5Gyvtf4/видео.html
definitely a new perspective on the event. After watching the men, you made it look hard. Never realized how many little uphill sections there were. Great job of finishing the event.
Thanks for sharing! I like your camera being on your chest. The other videos I've seen have the camera on the top of the rider's head. Being on your chest, the camera show a lot more how steep everything is and how hard you bike hits those rocks! When the camera is on top of a head, it looks a lot easier. Great idea for camera placement. Your run was wonderful and I hope you had a great time. And I hope you get to run it again!
I strongly disagree with those misogynist comments aka "Let the male riders show the girls how it is done". Apart from physical strength a lot depends on experience and also certain ruthlessness. I'll pull my hat off to every rider, female, male, or whatever, who has the guts to participate in such an event and eventually finishes....
Excellent ride! At 48-49 min, the inertial build-up to pass on the utility road gets swatted by entering Mirkwood where the path narrows and the change in light causes eye adaption problems. I have seen this so many times in this particular area that it is almost predictable. every race you run will get a better place and time. good luck.
Jen fantastic adventure and this type of downhill is not for everyone. congratulations for the video, another subscriber to your channel. cheers from portugal
There is a big difference between the men's race and the women's race: men fall off male competitor: great that's another place I've made up...zooms past - no f**ks given. women fall off: women competitor: are you okay - can I get you anything?
The kids have their own event (megakids) check the website for the age requirements. I would guess for megavalanche maybe 17yrs or 18yrs to compete?🤷♀️👍
Well don't take my word for it, I could be wrong about the age limit. I'm a fair age now so I don't bother looking at these things 😆. There's a whole range of ages participating. Its not just young ones. Also people who have never raced got down the mountain no hassle at all👍
what an unqualified comment... i know exactly what you mean, but if that's exactly what she and all the others enjoy - then let her do it for fuck sake ... and mind your own shit - or just look at the boys. everwhere we have to deal with people who think their opinion is worth a comment ...
I love how they make a mockery out of a bicycle by allowing it on snow. Bicycles are truly the dumbest invention ever. It doesn't fit on the roads. It doesn't fit outside the roads.
First time to see a women's Megavalanche. That was pretty impressive.
Enjoyed your run. Shows the other side of people running the race that are not the super heroes that win it every year. Gratz!!
After watching you makes me realize how INSANE the MEN are....OMG...flying down that snow like its pavement.
Yeah, it puts in perspective on how the whole thing is kinda sketchy.
seems like if any woman can go down the snow like one of the top men theyve basically won

It takes a lot of bravery to fall off a couple of times on the snow and then get back on it and do it all over again. Kudos!
Even braver if you saw her elbow

Its forbiden to have camera on chest and there were DSQ riders because of this. So you need to be sneaky and hide in the crowd.

Amazing run!! Good job
Your downhill skills are quite good 👍 It's where you've caught most of your opponents.... maybe except the sharpest corners in the new part ;-)
Fantastic video, thx Jen👌
Glad you enjoyed it!
