73. Cutting the campervan worktop for the new sink

- While the new diesel heater ran for two hours as per the installation instructions, I didn't want to leave it unattended so I turned my attention to cutting the new worktop including holes for the sink and tap (faucet).
If you liked the video and wish to leave me a tip, here's the link: www.ko-fi.com/davidjohns and thank you!

I do not believe that anyone who has not tried an effort of this kind can appreciate the internal deliberations that occur before each hole, each cut, each adaptation. Those of us who have appreciate your thoughtfulness so much more. So there.
😀👍
“I mean I could measure it , but why measure it when you could just eyeball it and hope for the best? You know…I might measure it.” 😂 ❤ Words I’ve never spoken in my life. 😉😜🤣🤣
Men . . .
David is my spirit animal at that moment😂
@@annwagner5779 True, there’s that…but I’m female. 😂❤
@@22vinebrook10 I would sure measure myself, but then, I’d never do the build in the first place.
Hmm, somehow I suspect this is David's sense of humour emerging ...
sort of after the Clarkson. J school ... as in 'how difficult can it be"?
"Sink Hole" ...possibly your best play on words ever 🤣
And you can save that round scrap bit, smooth it out, stain it, seal it, and polish it... Voila! New cheese board!
I just love hearing YOU say aloud what goes on in MY head when I do a project. We ❤❤❤ David!!
Cheers =^··^=
🤣🤣
With all these cliffhangers I half expect you to end with "tune in next time, same Vandemonium time, same Vandemoium channel!" When you get a chance take a look at your early videos to see how much you've improved with you DIY skills. Well done David!
“I don’t mind a bit of overhang”. I said that to my wife once. I must say that hospital food has come a long way since I was last there! 🙄
From Deb in North Carolina…that was brilliant, David! I’m very chuffed for you. Love how you work things out. Pat yourself on the back for being so clever.
I think my age is showing because at the end when you summed things all up I thought, "How exciting!" lol It's not even my campervan.
🤣🤣🤣
I agree about not trimming it. It is like cutting hair. You keep trimming until you have none left.
Glad i dont have to worry about that no more!
“Here goes nothing”. Inspirational attitude 👏👏👍😀
It must be nice having a place for your tools. Now that you have a house in all. Nice job on the counter top.
"I’ve trodden mud into the van." I could write a book about that from past experience.
I always enjoyed the videos on your boat when you did DIY. These are equally fun to watch. You have the most soothing voice, and your commentary and dry sense of humor are a pleasure. Looking forward to the next installment.
Wow, thank you!
@@Vandemonium You’re very welcome. Thank you!
i'm getting a sinking feeling
I’d love to see you do a big van build, you’ve got all the skills and tools😀👍
I'd like that too but I haven't the budget or the space for another vehicle!
Glad to see it worked out well. Before staining may I suggest sanding the overhang at the front half round to help with the towels.
I love the little squeaky fast forward bits. Imagining a few interesting words glossed over sometimes. :) the van is going to be deluxe
I am glad you bowled ahead and didn't faucet....
Nice, a David-Video on saturday, so I can enjoy it without being half-asleep after a day of working!
As for your van: I like it, despite myself probably wanting a bigger one (if I ever do a conversion) - so a Mercedes Sprinter or something like that, with parking-sensors (park-distance-control and maybe even a camera for reversing as I am not the best driver, especially for anything larger than a regular car! I can drive a van, did so for work in the past, but I never felt comfy without sensors - luckily most of the vans did have them and the camera!)...I'd also want a shower inside and easily accessible wiring (so cable-ducts, like in new homes...hell, I installed a LAN-Network here in my apartment before moving in and it was a pain in the butt...but in a house build in the 60s there is no cable ducts you can simply add additional wiring and installing cable ducts into the walls would have been too messy, so I screwed some onto the walls...but if I ever build something, it'll get easily accessible cable ducts, so maintenance is easy, as is installing new things!), with an electronics-cupboard with fuses and all that!
I however commend your move away from GAS! Gas is something I am not comfortable with (sure I do have camping cookers with gas, but only because they are convenient - in a vehicle or house I prefer electric cookers and ovens!)...I've once seen a foto of a gas-main-explosion! Not pretty unless you like shattered glas, ripped up streets etc.!
If you drill a hole that just intersects the hole saw's cutting circle, it will give the cuttings somewhere to escape. Makes it go much faster, and the saws last a lot longer.
Ooh I like that idea, cheers!
Top idea. Maybe helps with the burning?
Sounds a good idea, hadn't heard of that before.
I'll have to try that!
Another tip I just thought of is that you should probably switch out the pipe that goes from the sink to the waste water container to a smooth one. Regardless of what you intend to wash down the drain, water will get caught in the creases of that pipe and go stagnant. It could end up smelling a bit if left for too long.
This was almost as entertainIng as watching you actually going camping in your van. Is that odd, d’ya think?? Well done David. I’ll stand by for the next episode. 😂🇨🇦👍
I’d be chuffed too. Well done David - a couple of very decent jobs ticked off
Van rebuild is coming along nicely. Can't wait to see the end results. Great video.
You did it! That cliffhanger from last time had nothing to do with the actual main topic of this time. Great entertainment and real fun to watch - - apart from the actual infromation that is also contained in this video!
For full disclosure: I am planning with quite a limited budget to somehow get me (with however much diy) a campervan. The first - and only planned - task for it will be to get me from my native Germany through northern France, on a ferry to Ireland. Then for several months through Ireland then ferry over to Scotland and spend another few months there, before travelling south through England in certainly more than 2 weeks time and then back over the Channel, through the Nederlands and home to Germany. The whole endeavour is meant to take up 5 to 7 months.
Some of the content of this channel has already been taken in and been added to my being sure what I want and what I don't want in my van. So for you: mission accomplished!
Best wishes!
PS: I might send you an e-mail by the time I know when I'll hit England - who knows if some kind of meeting would be possible. But that could be anywhere from one to five years away!
I enjoyed that! Well done David! There was a comedian once who talked about 'inside words' and 'outside words' (or similar). I think it was a Carry On film?? Your 'outside words' are so well spoken, but every so often, an 'inside word' slips out and it is quite hilarious!
I really enjoy watching y our go through these construction jobs. Reminds me of my Dad, years ago, takes patience, guts, interest in making it work', pride in doing it yourself . Cheers to you, David, and your diy adventures!!! You know we want to see your house, and what you might be remodeling in there....😉😁
Ah, there's nothing going on in the house, I just repainted it. Besides it's not relevant to campervanning so won't appear here.
@@Vandemonium Never a good idea to possibly give your location away either!!
Hi David, I was so glad to see you wearing ear and eye protection. Bizarrely many folk demonstrate they don't. We only get one set of eyes & ears👀👂👂🧡
I suspect your heater fan runs a bit after the heat goes off for a cooling cycle. Cheers from the wilds of Canada. ~ulrich
I love watching your films David. I spend almost the entire time with a sort of smirk on my face. I can't explain it - it could be a "What IS he doing?" smirk, or a "What AM I doing with my life?" smirk, but there's a smirk none-the-less. As ever; thanks for sharing your journey with us. Can't wait for the 'Cooking [not] on gas' episode. :)
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Good peace of mind knowing it's all good and safe. Well done.
I could see 👀 the smoke billowing up from your ears David, while you were contemplating your measurements. 🤔😂
Congratulations David on no major cutting errors, things do go according to plan every so often. Keep up the good work!
Seeing your installation of the diesel heater plus, seeing another RUclipsr suggesting these heaters can be used as backup heat for the house, prompted me to buy one. I was presently surprised at how economical they are to purchase, run, and they are fairly clean burning compared to a diesel engine. Since all of the combustion gasses are piped outside, they provide good quality heat.
Great to see another update. As always an enjoyable watch. Power to your elbow, sir. 🙂
Glad you enjoyed it!
Bodgers paradise: scribe a line on the bits of the worktop that are too long and use a belt sander on the worktop to fair it back to the line 🙂- you end up with a beautifully smooth end at exactly the right length- a lot less skill needed than a plane
If only I had a belt sander!
@@Vandemonium true- maybe a borrow from a friend in a future job?- whatever- it's looking good- well done
Excellent work, hope you made yourself a wee cup of tea at the end and relaxed. Looking forward to the next instalment David, thank you.
Glad you used eye protectors. As you appear to be the sole user, quit while you're ahead. The fit looks OK to me and quite neat really. Saved a few pounds. Looking forward to next episode.
gareth and David, I have seen so many eye accidents, which could all have been avoided, but vanity takes precedence 👎👎👎 - Every DiYer : Please protect yourself 🙏
I've started using a full face one because every garden trim inevitably gets me in the eye. Not to mention the wire from a wire wheel that embedded itself in the tip of my nose. 4 mm either way and it would have been a hospital job.
Well done! And a couple of great laughs in it for me, too! Thanks
Well done David, on to the battery installation and once again, into the breach we go!
As always David, an excellent job to satisfy the mind that even a pro would be proud of. And with that said, time for a coffee. 🖖👍
Some very nifty mods, David, and all patiently well-executed. Nice work! Cheers.
Many thanks!
Thoroughly enjoy the vlogs! Nice job fitting the sink into the counter top.
Great video David!....I've actually learned quite a bit from watching the van vlogs ....great attention to detail!...cheers
Yes, David is a "detail person.
I do love to watch you faffing about. By far the most enjoyable thing on RUclips.
Awww ☺️
Some oak coverstrip, round edge on the edges of the work top will cover many evils. A quick whizz with a plane of sander and it will look lovely.
That would be far too professional for my DIY!!
@@Vandemonium Well it does cost $10 for 2.4 metres, so don't go over capitalising that van. If only my video production could match yours David I'd do a video of if. I just can't get organised enough to do a job then video it too.
I was screaming David, limescale bloody limescale
Great heater and better sink Well Done.
Great video mate, making my countertop for the van was probably the most difficult part of my entire van build! 😀😀
Well done. FYI in the future you can avoid tearing the wood on the underside from a hole saw by going only 1/2 way through and then drilling from the backside. Also, not cutting all the way through gives the sawdust more of a chance to escape via the shallower depth. Thus no burning. All the best.
Good tip, cheers!
Seems to be all coming together nicely. You are doing a great job.
Hi David, well done on the counter top. The water spots on the tap are a easy fix. Just place a paper towel wet with white vinegar over the area for a few minutes, then wipe off.
I love hearing you talk to yourself. Good luck on next job. Happy day
That's not that much lime scale. A little white vinegar will take care of it easily. I have hard water and if it isn't horrible the vinegar works great. If it's really bad I have to move on to chemicals which I hate. All and all, a good days work and it looks great.
Good morning David, okay so it's about 16:30 for you. Good job I really thought some of it was not going to go quite as planned. Seen a bit of mucking it up happening, but it worked out
Story idea: How about a video on renting and using a camper van in Great Britain? Selfishly, we are spending a good chunk of this September touring the island and, being RV experienced here in the states would love your perspective. Maybe an interview with a rental company with a few how-tos on finding camping sites, replenishing water, dumping waste, etc.
Cheers; probably not something I'd do on this channel. Your best bet for sites are websites like pitchup.com or the big caravan/motorhome clubs (some of which accept non-members for a higher fee). Be prepared for tiny pitches where you're all clumped together just a few feet from your neighbours, it's not like the USA where there's acres of space between sites!!
@@Vandemonium Thanks for considering the idea and your helpful comments!
Great use of Time Management.👍 On call with ears peeled back listening out for any change in the heating system whilst creating a new worktop and rearranging the plumbing all within a 2-hour slot. Looking good. 😊Full Marks for Wood Working and Audio Skills.👏👏👏👏👏
That work is very blessed... a HOLEY job.
Great work. Love the new sink and how it looks.
Sink hole makes you do a double take when you live here in Florida.
David, You had me on the edge of my seat, ALL through, your plumbing installation !
I shall have dreams about this tonight, I can tell !
I fear for my sanity, when the cook-top goes in !
Bravo !
Take care, and Stay Safe !
Stu xx
The way is open for error lol. your a champ love these videos.
Excellent work, still has me in bits with your fast foreward. Cheers 😂😂👍
you're getting fancy smancy David - good work old boy
Try US product "Lime Away" for water/metal scaling, it is slightly enviro "green" vs. CLR.
Vinegar works wonders on limescale in kettles taps, showers stalls in other words on lime anywhere
User-tf: Lemon juice is great, and it's NOT poisonous
Good progress.
A mild acid like vinegar should remove the lime scale.
I would have trimmed the end of the top by sanding rather than jig saw. Jig saw blades flex a lot when trying to cut less a width less than the thickness of the blade. I have experienced this the hard way.
The fan running after the burner has shut off is normal to cool down the heater.
Dave.
Lemon juice removes limescale and it's NOT poisonous ‼️
Always nice to watch your vlogs. Looks like you are getting quite skilled at woodworking.
Haha thanks. It looks better on camera than in reality! 🤣
Love these vlogs Dave, I almost have enough confidence to start thinking about doing diy projects myself....
Do!
Don't fret David. They say memory is the 2nd thing to go.
🤣
You're going to love the induction cooker
I've ben on tenterhooks waiting for a video on making a new work surface - now it's finally arrived. Phew!
Great updates and upgrades
Greatly enjoying this series of videos! So impressed by your DIY skills 👏
Thanks so much! 😊
Great job. It’s looking good
Thanks!
I wonder if the sink could do with a bit of dynamat or something to stop it resonating down the road. Might also keep your dishwater warm longer!
Nothing much better than that “satisfying feeling” when things go to plan. 👍🇨🇦
Great update on the van! Makes me wish we had a campervan to go play in the country with.
A Japanese Pull Saw David, for future reference! Remove the "Blobs" of wood with ease!
It's all looking pretty good!
I love watching someone figure things out methodically like I do, so much pleasure 😉
😀😀
Good skills as always!
Although it would take more time, if you've forgotten how you did something, you could watch your old videos.
Another great diy Job. Well done
Well done David
Can't wait for the next adventure.
Thank you for another entertaining video!
Very impressive!
Thank you for the upload! :)
You are so clever! It looks great 😃
good vid thanks lee
Very nice.
Well done sir well done 👍👍👍👍👍
Great work, David.
This gives me inspiration to attempt a similar van build.
Happy Camping
Excellent!
Fractionally annoying 😄 I’m going to borrow that one
Bravo!
"Why measure when you can just eyeball it?" Thanks for a very good laugh!
You measure it to make sure it is right - as you so quickly figured out! Without making any bad cuts!
I've enjoyed #71, #72 and now #73, it is a real pleasure watching and listening to you think things through and avoiding some real screw ups.
For someone who says he's not much of a DIYer I think you're well on the way to being a damn good one.
If you need to quiet that fuel pump just stiffen the plywood with some glued on strips of wood. I doubt you need to - but in the middle of the night when you are trying to sleep?
I'm going to subscribe to Vandemonium, I've been subscribed to Cruising the Cut for a couple of years already. Jim Y😁
Thank you! Welcome along 😀
I am impressed in your knowledged of cutting out and measuring so well done..
🤣
You could also possibly keep your sink negative to use as a cover. Not sure how useful that tiny extra bit of bench-top would ever be. You seem to use a kitchen very economically :)
As a machinist, your comment about 'why measure when you can just eyeball it' made me twitch a little. I'm curious to see how your induction cook top works out and what the battery life is like.
Here's a tip for your slight measurement problem: lay the piece flat like you did at first, then measure the thickness of the piece that sticks out. Add that measurement to the total length and you'll get the correct measurement.
When you speed up the recording it’s SO FUNNY that it makes me laugh out loud. Cheers from California 😅
Nice Volvo 😎
