    I am a 53 yr old single male. At one time not to long ago (about 3.5 - 4 yrs ago) I held 2 part time jobs, one was a 10yr job, and the other was 4 yr job, so these were not fly by night jobs, I was in it for the long haul, getting no overtime because both jobs are part time, but I worked equivalent of 40-45 hrs at $7.65 an hr bringing home an avg of $800 a month. I lived in my van not by choice but because it's what life gave me. I owed child support and was garnished $220 a mo, so that brought my living bring home wages to around $600 a month, to pay rent, gas for the van ($60 a week for driving time), bills, etc....there was no way I could pull off paying for rent, which starts of $450 a mo, and goes up from there and the avg. monthly rent is around $600, let alone the other stuff that came up in life on $600 a month alone.
    I did this for 3.5 yrs, all finally paying the support for my child. After this I spent another approximately 6 months looking for a place and have since found a place to stay sharing rent, for the last 4 months now, but rent is sugnificatnly lower since we are shareing rent.
    That all being said, I now have a job making $10 an hr, and as of just recently gotten my hours drastically cut down, from 35hr a week down to now 19hrs a week, but they are doing it store wide so it's not due to me or anything I did, it's jsut a cut in hours and is not known when it will get back to normal hours. But I now see myself looking at getting a second part time job again, giving me 2 part time jobs again.
    On top of all this, I was informed that 1 our roommates has decided to move to Colorado to live which now leaves me and 1 other to pay for rent, which even with both jobs I cannot see budgeting that in, so once again I am faced with living in my van, with 2 part time jobs. It's not always something someone chooses in life, it's sometimes what life chooses for you.
    Not everyone who is homeless or in a homeless state is there of their own accord, it's just what people are doing to survive and get by at the time.
    I just want to say, please people do not consider "all" homeless or people in a homeless state, bad or leeches or bums, because I am living proof that there are those of us who are actually trying and do put back into society, and live what we call a "normal" life by our standards.
    I will and have willingly told people when they ask if I live in that thing (thing being the van) I tell them yeah, and explain more why I am there, while they listen. Sometimes listening and trying to better understand people in this state of living, helps you or others understand better what's actually going on, instead of doing what SO SO SOOOOOOO many do in today's society and assumes the absolute worst in someone or something before actually knowing the facts. Try and be informed, rather than assuming things.

      In the 1980s, I knew a guy who played sax in bars and night clubs on weekends and who did an MBA part time. He used his limited income to rent a room over some shops in a dreary suburban strip mall. That room stored his belongings, and the electronic equipment for his gigs. He lived in his van, which he also used to drive his equipment to gigs. Down the hall from the room he rented, was a toilet and sink. The fellow used to shower in the apartment of a former girl friend, who has been my wife of the last 28 years. The fellow living hand to mouth in this fashion I have just described, went on to a white collar career, and has been stably married for over 2 decades.

    • @lylecosmopolite
      @lylecosmopolite 6 лет назад

      Easyrider: it is very valuable for people in your situation to share rent.
      When your monthly income goes down, does your child support decline as well?
      You used to make about $17000/year. $1301 of Social Security and $660 of income tax was taken out of that, leaving you with $15039/year. If you can't claim your kid for EIC purposes, you get no EIC. But if you can, you could get up to $3373/year, which would more than cover your child support.
      I propose a flat tax of 33.33%, combined with giving everyone $6000/year, for a total of $17333/year.

      I'm very compassionate towards all homeless people. I don't really care what got them there. There's some tent cities on the east coast, that if you stay off drugs & alcohol for 6 months I think it is, you can move into one of the rooms in the big house. I wish I could remember what the name of the place is. I saw it on one of these youtube videos.
      Child support has not only destroyed a lot of families & destroyed a lot of mens lives. I think there needs to be vast reform in all of our govt policies. The materialistic greed is driving this dragon & the child support system & cps system is destroying families. I think the two go hand in hand.
      I have a great deal of compassion for you. Stay on youtube & connect up with as many homeless as you can. Maybe in numbers the homeless can find ways to improve their situations.

      Steve Easyrider77 "I lived in my van not by choice but because it's what life gave me", "it's sometimes what life chooses for you". You can either see you life from a reactive mindset,or a proactive mindset. In my 20's I tended to be more reactive and I found myself to always be struggling. It was only when I became more proactive that things got easier. I'm not exactly the most driven person either. I pretty much coast through life compared to my potential,but here I am 20 years later in a nice big house that I own,with all the toys. Everything is paid for. No one ever helped me and I never once expected anyone should. At the end of my 20's I could fit everything I owned in the back of a rusty old pick up. When I bought my house it kinda forced me to be a little more proactive and from then on I never struggled.
      My point is: write your own story, don't let life write for you.

    • @itsjustrenee1320
      @itsjustrenee1320 6 лет назад +5

      Steve Easyrider77 I agree. People who have the better cards dealt don't always have compassion for those who got the bad hands. I have a son who had two part-time jobs & was houseless a few months. He got a room,-mate & lived in an old duplex for several years then met a girl who was working on her assoc degree. They got married, he got a better job, she graduated & they just bought a nice house. Not super fancy but nice. Now their goal is to pay off the mortgage & have children. The fact theyve been unable to get pregnant is worse than any other issues they've had. It hurts the most. When he was homeless he could've came back to us 800 miles away but he needed to prove to himself I guess that he could take care of himself. The thing I tell him is it's not the land of opportunity anymore my parents had. They've dismantled the American dream & flooded our country with non-citizens & meager wages & out sourced manufacturing so that's not working people's fault. We all must pull together & do what we can to help one another because the govt does not have it's citizens best interest at heart. I got blessed because I bought an $18000 house in 1991 & had it paid off in ten years. It's not fancy but it's solid & paid off. The taxes are $800 a year & our utilities are about $120 a month. My husband & I both work so we have it better than a lot of people but I help a lot of people too. Two of my grandkids got on drugs & those two are struggling to maintain financially. They make it harder for the rest of us & I see them as selfish & immature. I have to balance my natural grandmother instincts with resolve to not let them take advantage of me. They get mad if I don't let them have money but I'm not going to work & have them blow it on stupidity or selfishness. I respect you for working two jobs. I don't know if you're interested in marriage but a good woman may help your life improve. Notice I said good woman. A selfish immature woman will only be a liability. God bless.

    HOW CAN WE HELP??? What I've learned from these documentaries is a powerful lesson in compassion and it's also been a wake up call. I'm a Disabled Vet with a chronic illness. After a year full of tragedy (2018) I've realized I could easily be one of these people in the near future. So I'm going to do some research about homelessness in my city and see what I can do to make a difference. When I worked (I was a Financial Analyst at a large corporation), I was on the volunteer committee at my company. I helped build homes, deliver food, gather and pass out blankets, etc. Now I'm curious if there have been any improvements in the way my city deals with these unfortunate people because just sticking them in an overcrowded shelter and giving them soup every day is not going to help improve their lives!!! If there are good resources, then I want to help spread the knowledge to the homeless population that wants help. I encourage anyone else who ends this to do the same!!!

You think only liberal states have rent to high problems and you think its because of liberal politics, how fucking stupid are you? If it was up to Liberals, there would be rent controls but its not, we live in a capitalist system that says the government should not interfere let the markets regulate themselves. Put move to where the jobs are and when that happens, rent prices go up, it does not matter where the fuck you live. Get your facts straight before you come online spouting none sense.

      Only in shitty places in NH. Otherwise it’s $1000/mo for a studio with $2,000 up front- most likely no pets (so ditch those dogbabies or be homeless!)& no utilities included, with a ton of competition with people with better credit history. Want a 1+ bedroom in NH? Grab a roomie. Otherwise, you’re pretty much fucked because you can’t be homeless here- you’ll get booted. You also can’t eat- you need a voucher to get into the pantries in many places. To get that voucher, you gotta sit in the welfare office for half-to most of the day, plus find your way there. There’s absolutely no handouts here; it’s dog eat dog. New Englanders are rough around the edges- not super friendly.
      Sad.

How can they go to an employment agency when they haven't showered and then interview without nice clean, pressed clothes a fresh shave and haircut? People don't think of these types of situations before they run their mouth. Not every homeless person's situation is the same, as we all should know....so we must inform the public! End of rant! 😊

When i worked in a homeless shelter in Georgia, our guests could pretty much always get jobs at the two poultry plants in town. Obv not the most desirable work, but if you don't have an industry like that, where are they going to go for a job?

    Sometimes, homeless IS a choice! I have, at times, chosen it myself! It can be an adventure out there. To me, it's "urban camping" and, if done well, can lead to substantial savings in your cost of living! Later in life, after making some very poor choices, I became homeless and 3000 miles away from home. It took me 9 years to crawl out of that mess I made for myself. I've seen both sides and I know the difference. Sometimes, homeless IS a choice.

    I'm Disabled, a Veteran, and have been homeless for two years. I'm not a drug addict, just lost my housing two years ago when the apartment complex I was living at in Mesa Arizona was sold to a buyer in Toronto, who promptly notified the tenants living with Section 8 or VASH assistance they had the option to move out or pay full market value rent without assistance.
    I found while looking for a place to move to, that most low income housing in my area was eliminated in this same fashion by greedy investors and was unavailable to find another place to live.
    I bought an old van on payments and was forced to start living in it. I did so for a year and was offered a tiny fiberglass trailer on payments. I found that the person I bought it from had mislead me on a clear title, and have had difficulty getting it registered and legal to tow. I have been stranded at a Recreation Area, above Kingman Arizona for seven months now trying to get repairs done to my van. It is no longer safe to drive, and definitely not suitable to tow my trailer. It has been a living hell, upto 128 degrees at times this summer, now dealing with freezing cold at night and heavy winds. Every time I try to get some repairs made, something comes up. I bought a used generator which failed in a couple weeks, had to buy another one, then my emotional support dog Archie was badly bitten and required veterinary care, my air conditioning compressor failed in my Van, I cut my knuckle to the bone and ligaments on some glass discarding some trash which resulted in an Emergency Room Visit.
    I have been trying to get help, and have not had much success. I was accepted for PATH Rapid Rehousing through the Catholic Charities, but have searched all over Mohave County but found I cannot afford an apartment on my disability income. I have been looking for a room for rent, but no luck.
    So now I'm in a panic as I was notified by the Catholic Charities Caseworker handling my information, had their computer stolen and now my personal information has been compromised.
    I am on a waiting list for Section 8, basically started over. I did not choose to be in this homeless situation, and have been doing my best to deal with everything I have experienced the past 2 years. I had to literally give everything I owned away when I lost my apartment EVERYTHING!, I did try and keep my many tools, but those to were lost to a "friend" who was going but keep them until I get settled, but would never respond to my calls or texts.
    I am absolutely sick of my life. I don't live anymore, I merely exist, and it's not much of an existence at that. I have not showered in nearly 8 months, and haven't bathed in over two years since losing my apartment. My teeth are broken, many missing, and I broke another one recently, not looking forward to the toothache that's coming. I am nearly blind in one eye and can only see clearly with glasses, but I lost one of the lenses. I have reached out to every VA organization or service center I know of for help, but am ineligible.
    I worked for the Air Force starting my senior year of high school, as a civilian employee and for the next decade.
    I also simultaneously served 6 years in the Air National Guard, and was honorably discharged, but still don't meet the requirements as I was on active duty for well over a year with Avionics Technical School, and was activated during Desert Storm, but could not deploy with my unit, as I was a 3 level technician straight out of school.
    I have no family for support, no friends, only a few people I have met while being homeless. I have had a fellow vet brings some water bottles and food items several months back, and just today was given a propane tank, heavy sleeping bag, and nice winter coat by Catholic charities, these were definitely a blessing and will definitely help, but I don't see how I can ever get out of my situation as my limited income doesn't suffice to handle the many needs I currently have trying to get out of my homeless situation along with handling my major dental problems, lack now of a safe vehicle, and trailer registration.
    Any day the area I am staying may be closed, the BLM Rangers have told me they plan to close access to this Recreation Area soon. I will be in an Emergency Situation when they do, and have no idea yet what I will do .

However , if ones choose to do things that perpetuate their homelessness, that releases us from responsibility. The fact is that society has broken down and tragically the result is mental health issues, immorality, drugs and alcohol, and subsequently homelessness. The US needs more very low income housing.

    I use to camp in tent city when I first arrived in Keene. Most of the Homeless people here in Keene either have drug and alcohol issues or severe mental health issues. The answer is not more homeless shelters, but habitats for human beings to live, grow their own food, build there own cabins, fish, or whatever it takes to survive and become self sufficient. Shelters may keep people alive in cold weather, programs may help with resources, but it also makes them more dependent and domesticated. Most homeless persons avoid homeless shelters, and sleep outside. Who wants to be around noisy, violent drunks?
    My advice, bring back homesteading.
    I am very aware of the issues surrounding homelessness, I’ve been homeless many times in my life.
    Mark my words..... if you keep slapping bandaids on this issue, it will never get solved, and will continue to grow.
    There is plenty of viable land, so there is no excuse for homelessness in America.
    The system doesn’t want to cure homelessness, it doesn’t want people to become self reliant, it wants them to be dependent domesticated, easily controlled herd animals.
    It wants them to be slaves to corporations, and good little docile consumers.
    I’ve studied this issue for about 20 yrs now, and traveled to nearly every state in this country from east to west and north to south.
    These are the facts!

      GiovannisSanctuary most of the homeless here and everywhere are on drugs and have mental illness issues. Also, it isn’t that easy to get a job when ye are homeless. Sure, someone might hire you to do some land scape for a few days, but not enough to get off the street. My point is that, most of these people couldn’t obtain a steady job if they wanted to. These days it just isn’t as easy to get a job like when I was growing up. Corporations are fussy and they’ve got tons of people to choose from.
      Sure, there are jobs if you have a steady employment record, if you have a reliable car, a college degree.
      Personally, I would discourage people from going to college, because in college nowadays, you are just paying them to indoctrinate you with their insipid sjw egalitarian dogma.
      It’s like I said above. The system isn’t interested in solving the homeless issues. If it did, it would bring back homesteading. It would allow these people to build their own cabins in the woods, grow their own food, hunt, fish etc.
      The system cares about one thing, and one thing.... Auto domestication. It cares about keeping you dependent on it for everything.

Besides I would like to be able to go to the woods and enjoy camping, canoeing, hunting,fishing, hiking without running across a bunch of assholes claiming this is their property. That land that you talk about is everyone's land to enjoy within limits if we all used it like they did back in the 1800's in a month there would be none. If you give land to someone, that is what you are saying to do, who is to say how they treat it? Homesteading is good for some people and it isn't for others. So your idead of viable land is to ruin what natural resources there are in the US (streams, lakes, reservoirs, forests)? You think forests would remain standing without fires burning out of control?
      Why do something as drastic as that when people in New York have gardens on top of buildings? Nothing prevents people in tent cities or "sanctuary" shed cities from building small gardens. If people who are living in tents or sheds get tired of it and want to homestead.. then let them use their legs and go or just build a small garden. Some people couldn't handle it and would return to getting something for nothing. No rent involved in squatting, no property taxes involved in tent cities.

    • @jms_wttrs9228
      @jms_wttrs9228 4 года назад +1

      @@J.T.Stillwell3 - Homesteading is not the answer nor is it the solution to the reasons or problems of homelessness. People can always build gardens where they are at, even on paved parking lots - but they don't. If you give homeless people land, are you in turn just going to write off loans people have on their houses? If so, why not just put people back into their homes/apartments. So homesteading on free government land is not the solution. If people want the solution to each individual homeless circumstance, they need to speak to the individual and not carpet bomb them all with the same "solution" because they all don't have the same problem.
      I agree about society - the system - and long term objectives of politicians. I disagree about going to college, but agree about their corriculum.

    • @J.T.Stillwell3
      @J.T.Stillwell3 4 года назад +1

      jms_ wttrs I agree with some of your points, but asserting that homeless people can grow enough to feed themselves on public pavements is laughable. First off, it’s illegal to make a garden on property you don’t own. I do agree however, that people are homeless for a variety of reasons, and those reasons need to be addressed. Alcoholism, drug abuse, mental illness etc. I don’t think homeless shelters are a real solution (clearly). It’s like trying to treat aids with cough sirup. Again, I think most homeless people could benefit from homesteading. The requirement could be that one mixes their labor with the land. That they take pride in it. That they invest in it by creating a residence, crops, water well etc. Shelters and other such programs just institutionalize and teaches the homeless nothing about personal responsibility and self sufficiency. What many homeless people need is self sufficiency not hand outs. Give a man a fish and he’ll keep coming back, teach him how to fish, and grant him the ability to fish and he won’t need you anymore. Let him live on land that isn’t in use and he’ll learn to live off of it. Keep kickin him off land and forcing him to move, and you’ll never solve the problem of homelessness. This is a lesson they’ve learned very well in Portland OR. See Dignity village.

They also are in need of basic toiletries such as toothpaste, brushes, soap, deodorants, body wash, and some forget about the need for women: pads and tampons. I so agree. I cannot imagine giving my homeless mother a couple of bucks and sending her on her way. I cannot imagine letting one of my children be homeless, with my grandchildren no less. Even if you don't have a couch for them to sleep on, you can make up a little bed on the floor with blankets and a pillow.

    What if homeless people networked across the U.S. and agreed to all migrate to one city? In some smaller cities, they might even become the majority, and therefore the most powerful voting block. In bigger cities, the pressure would be so great the city planning department would be so overwhelmed they'd have no choice but to provide more services, perhaps even housing. Seems to me the only effective power homeless people in the U.S. have is their numbers. My advice is to organize this power.

      Whatever the cause of homelessness, they all still need a place to live, that's the point. It's not like the drug addicts should stay on the streets while the "worthy" homless are helped. Once housed, they are all going to have different challenges to address in order to stay stable and not go back into homelessness. That's where your addiction treatment will come into play for some.

    We will all fall on hard times.. But we need to fall on te rock JESUS CHRIST. I have been in these situations and on the street with 3 children and pregnant.. I continued my CYCLES because I continued my thoughts and bitterness and unforgiveness. I wanted to die as a young mom at 24 and the thoughts of killing my children and there fathers for us not to go through anymore pain.. I cryed out with everything in my soul to God.. I asked if he was real to show me CLARITY.. he did.. a few days later I went to get my drugs out of a cabinet and heard an audible voice say get it all out.. I had a FEAR like never before.. I was a 16 yr addict, sold drugs, lied, manipulated, stole, cheated, was a bad mom, wife, neibor.. I was a FILTHY SINNER. God awoken me to my WAYS and gave me the ability to REPENT = STOP,THINK and TURN from your SIN.. he wasn't playing with my foolishness any longer . He set the stage to do his will.. it was reading the BIBLE for myself and having a personal RELATIONSHIP with the living CHRIST.. not RELIGION.. not an alter call.. not a SINNERS prayer.. it was dieing to self and doing the right thing.. I'm 18 yrs BORN again,BAPTIZED and holy spirit FILLED. I encourage all who read this to consider your soul.. consider your ways, take ownership of the choices you make and tell the truth.. sin will corrode you, it will keep you bound and eating your own vomit. God says we must die.. we must pick up our CROSS and follow him. You can house people, feed them.. but what about the truly needed root to get to the fruit of the real REAL ISSUE. The real issue is you love your SIN and hate God. God is not a behavior MODIFICATION man.. he is in the new heart and new start business.. he will renew your mind and give you hope and a future to do his will.. he will give you power over sin.. I'm a witness, I'm a child of God.. I am walking the straight and NARROW and I want you to be in HEAVEN with me.. I want you to know he is no respecter of person.. STOP PLAYING church, stop playing GAMES with GOD SINNER. . You want his RIGHTOUSNESS. . It will redeem you into a SAINT.. it will wash you from your FILTHY ways and set you on solid ground to do his will.. dont die in your sins.. participant in your SALVATION . Let him get the glory for your story and not the DEVIL whom came to STEAL, KILL and DESTROY. We get to CHOOSE.. CHOOSE WISELY NEIGHBORS. Seek ye the kingdom of GOD and all will be added unto you.

    Wait....they won't rent to someone with kids or 2 adults? They should check the fair housing laws for people with kids because that has a high likelihood of being illegal for a reason to decline renting to someone. If the adults are married, that could also be illegal for the same reason declining an individual(s) with kids because it should be covered under the part of fair housing called "familial status".

      After the Great Depression was over following WW2, there was the political will to build housing all over the country. You had big families and the baby boom. They wanted lots of births. So they created reasons and security for that goal. Once they had enough people being born and immigration here ( high levels)they quit building as they were doing ( 1980) and rewrote laws that make renting and homeownership difficult. They sent jobs and manufacturing overseas. None of this is an accident either ! Tech exists to track and control everything and everyone. Now that this can be done, the real tyrants have emerged. More draconian laws. Less freedom. Homelessness is a big part of this. But for the rich, who get richer since 1980- 81, everyone else is struggling. U.S.style Fascism. That's why the politicians lie when they SAY they'll end homelessness through more taxes. No. They steal the tax money- for themselves and allies. If you call them out, the cops will persecute you, on their behalf. Don't believe the hype about ending homelessness with more beaurocrats and agencies. It's not happening.

Anyway with the agreement from the neighborhood allowing this to happen after seeing that the person moving there was an agreeable type. To add also the tiny house movement has to come about and resistance put aside. There are greedy investors on more than one level creating higher and higher living costs with no end in sight. Homelessness may not always be a choice, but it is often the result of poor decisions, like not thinking about your own well being and saving for a rainy day. However that said the other half of it is often government over policing and regulating and interfering with the construction of homeless shelters, housing, and similar. We don't need to be locking up people for smoking a bit of weed or throwing them in prison just because they're caught without a drivers license three times. It's one thing if you can show they're a genuine danger to others maybe, but it's a completely different matter to simply lock someone up because you've taken away their license for failing to pay child support (often the result of the loss of employment, etc).

    solution: Most homeless would appreciate a car or a van given/loaned to them. It's shelter. They probably don't need overnight heat, but if they do, people seem to like the propane Buddy Heater. Maybe the gov can provide electric hookups with oil-filled space heaters in the cold months.... kind of like a drive-in. In cities like LA or in Florida - maybe a sleeping bag or a couple of blankets, and a pillow would do. They will need a weekly gasoline allowance as well.
    There will have to be a gov run network of vehicle maintenance shops to keep them running.... but they will be cheaper than the $millions that is spent on stick-and-brick public housing now. Them in vehicles is safer for them than sleeping in homeless shelters, on the street in some corner, or in 'the projects'.. Sometimes mobility can make all the difference.
    Soup kitchens should remain open for those who can use them. TaDa!
    There's a whole community who live in cars and vans- who like it. See channel Cheap RV Living (all one word- no spaces), Rolling Earth-Ship, etc. for details.
